HIKING, BIKING THROUGH NORTH GEORGIA
STORY BY AMBER TYNER
Y
oung or old, exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle. Adults are encouraged to log at least two and a half hours of physical activity each week, and one way to meet this goal is by spending time outdoors. In the North Georgia area, residents can get a good workout by hiking or biking through the mountains. “Hiking and biking are great sources of exercise,” said Tommie Best, owner of Limestone Personal Training in Gainesville. “The benefits (are) you’re out in nature for one thing, and (you) can build (your) own intensity level into it.” She said she recommends hiking and biking as easy, low-cost ways to stay healthy. “It doesn’t take a lot,” she said about the outdoor activities. “It’s a low-cost way to exercise, and it’s low-impact. Just about anybody can do it.” And in the local region, the public has
6 | HOME | September 2019
plenty of options for either type of exercise. In Hall County, for instance, residents can hike or bike for free at trails managed by Parks & Leisure Services. “We have trails at three different parks,” said Becky Ruffner, marketing and public relations specialist at Hall County Parks & Leisure. “All three of those trail systems are multi-use trails, meaning you can hike it, you can run or you can bicycle the trail.” She said the trails are located at Cherokee Bluffs Park in Flowery Branch as well as North Hall Community Center & Park and Laurel Park in Gainesville. “I would not say there is one that is difficult, but they can be more moderate trails,” she said, mentioning the parks are open year-round. “The trail at Laurel is a flat trail, and it’s paved, so it’s really a very easy trail for anyone that likes to get out and walk or hike or even bike. The trails at North Hall and Cherokee Bluff go from an easy trail to a more moderate trail.”

TOP RIGHT: Pat Lennon talks with fellow cyclists at the Chicopee Woods Mountain Bike Trails during a group ride through the trail system. Photo by Nick Bowman.
In addition to those managed by Hall County, the area also has several other trails for hiking and cycling. Joe Elam, owner of Habersham Bikes, said Chicopee Woods is a great option for both beginner bikers and those with more experience “One of the most popular mountain bike trails really in the whole state is called Chicopee Woods,” he said, referring to the trail on Elachee Drive in Gainesville. “There’s about 25 miles of total trail. They’re various ranges of abilities, so they have some trails that are good to get started with and then they have some more aggressive trails.” He also mentioned a new trail in White County known as Yonah Preserve. “It’s a fairly flat terrain,” he said. “The total distance is somewhere around six miles or so. It’s a very smooth, beginner-oriented type trail.” And for those who prefer more of that smoother land, he said you can try biking on rail trails. “They are off-road, meaning that there’s no cars, but they are paved surfaces,” he said about the courses. “So they are smooth and easy to ride on. The most popular one in the state is called the Silver Comet Trail. It basically goes from Atlanta to the Alabama state line.” Or, you could ride on roads. “In the state of Georgia, bicycles are the same as a car,” Elam said. “They’re a form of transportation, and you are legally allowed
to ride on all roads except for roads that have controlled access. These are typically interstates such as I-985, I-85, I-285, etc.” But when biking—no matter what type of trail—it’s important to come prepared and have the proper equipment. Trent Hughes, employee of Bike Town USA in Gainesville, recommends first-time bikers purchase an entry-level mountain bike. “An entry-level mountain bike is super versatile, and it’s going to allow you to do a little bit of everything,” he said. “It’s not going to hold you back to just one thing say as just a pure road bike or maybe a certain style of hybrid bike.” He said it’s important to consider safety and hydration, too. “You definitely need to wear a helmet,” he said. “You can’t replace your brain, so protect it. Other things are hydration, and there’s different forms—carrying water bottles or hydration packs. Then depending on what you’re doing as far as riding, if you’re going to be riding with any sort of traffic or even in a neighborhood, I preach heavy on lights, taillights and even headlights.” He said he recommends biking as an exercise for everyone, no matter their age. “I would recommend cycling for anybody,” he said. “You’re going to lose weight, you’re going to get your cardio up with little or no impact and it’s one of those sports if you get into it, it’ll be a sport you’ll do the rest of your life.” H September 2019 | HOME | 7

HOME HIDEAWAY ALONG THE RIVER STORY BY JK DEVINE PHOTOS BY AUSTIN STEELE
A
fter eight years in the governor’s mansion in bustling downtown Atlanta, former Gov. Nathan Deal and his wife, Sandra, were ready to retire in a quiet rural setting in northeast Georgia. Fortunately, they already had the perfect place. In early 2000s, the Deals purchased a three-story log cabin nestled in the bend of the Chattahoochee River in Habersham County near the White County line. It was an ideal retreat from their busy lives when Nathan served Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives and later as the state’s twoterm governor. But the cabin wasn’t quite suitable for the couple in their 70s. It had no bedrooms on the main level, a steep staircase and small bathrooms. Nathan and Sandra wanted to build a home on their cabin site that would work for them in the future.
“We wanted a smaller house with everything on the main level,” Sandra said. “And we wanted it to be handicap-accessible,” Nathan said. They contacted REED BROTHERS design and build, who regularly construct forever homes for empty-nesters and retirees. Todd Reed works on the designs while Ron Reed manages the construction. With the Reeds, the Deals discussed their future home’s essential needs with the main objective being a smaller single-level home with a three-car garage and guest rooms for visitors. “We knew we wanted this home to be our final home,” Sandra said. “We wanted to be sure it would allow for a wheelchair if we ever had to use one. And if we ever were to become ill and need extra help, we wanted to have room for a caregiver.” Todd and Ron agreed to the task and
built the Deals a home with 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, a partially unfinished basement and three-car garage. The finished portion of the basement is designed as an apartment for guests with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, a rec room, a kitchenette and patio. Plus, storage space is filled with items acquired by the Deals after 53 years of marriage. Access to the main level is a stairwell and an elevator. Todd Reed said elevators have become a common request for older adults who have a basement. He explained sometimes they build the elevator shaft and use it as a closet. Then when the need arises, it can be converted into an elevator. The Deals decided to install the elevator. “We were able to use it to move furniture and books and other things up and down,” Nathan said. “It also helped

because I had back surgery (in February) and that allowed me to go downstairs if I didn’t want to take the stairs.” Other handicap-accessiblity features have helped Nathan as he recovered. One example is the curbless shower with its three shower heads and sit-down space. The shower links Sandra’s and Nathan’s bathrooms. “We both had our own bathrooms in the governor’s mansion, and we weren’t bumping into each other,” Sandra said. “It was nice.” Sandra has a large vanity and a tub with air jets in her space while Nathan has a smaller vanity. The bathrooms connect to two walk-in closets on one side and the master bedroom on the other. Next to the closets is the laundry room followed by the garage. The Deals requested this specific configuration. “When we come in dirty — which we often do — we can go from the carport and put our dirty clothes in the washing machine,” Sandra said. Along with his and her bathrooms and
closets, Nathan has a sitting room while Sandra has a small office off the master bedroom. “It’s her office No. 2,” Nathan said, explaining her third office is the library in the basement, which has a daybed for naps. Office No. 1 is the walk-in pantry hidden by a cabinet-style door in the kitchen. It has a view of the driveway and front yard and houses extra kitchen items, plants and a small computer desk for Sandra. The white cabinetry in the kitchen provides a nice contrast to the hardwood floors throughout the house. “I wanted something light instead of the dark wood of the original cabin,” she said. Some of the top cabinets feature glass and recessed lighting to showcase Nathan’s mother’s painted china and their wedding china. Most of the lower cabinets are drawers. “I don’t have to get down on the floor to reach the back,” she said. “I can pull out the drawer.” Corian countertops with a white swirl pattern are paired with the side cabinetry to complement the white brick backsplash.
The island sports solid white quartz with a built-in stovetop and vent. “I didn’t want a hood that would block my view,” she said, glancing from the kitchen into the dining and living room combo. “My entertainment is watching people come down the river.” Nathan’s favorite spot is the outside deck, which has access off the dining room and his sitting room. “This is a great place to have breakfast in the morning and in the evening to have supper,” he said. “It’s really shady and stays cool in the summer.” But when he doesn’t want to be outside, he simply turns a lever to operate the rollout windows, letting in sounds of the river. “It’s quiet now because it’s been so dry,” he said. “Usually, it is roaring.” A high-top table with a built-in lazy Susan is positioned by the windows in the living room where the Deals can eat dinner and watch the sunset. The table is one of two brand-new pieces in the home. The second is their dining room table that Nathan calls his “Michelangelo.”

“We went to pick out the countertop and I saw this slab,” Nathan said. “I asked what it was. They said Michelangelo. It is Brazilian quartz.” They sliced the 9-foot-long and 6-foot-wide slab for a dining room table and a smaller slice for a small foyer table. The table weighs 640 pounds and sits on 2-inch steel rebar bent into table legs. “Sandra said we built the house around my table,” Nathan said. Sandra agreed. “I changed things where it wouldn’t take away from his table,” she said.
The rest of the home is furnished with pieces from the Deals’ previous houses. Nathan’s sitting room is decorated with furniture from the original cabin and an array of mallards. “My mother’s maiden name was mallard,” Nathan said. Most objects on display in the home are from family members and friends. They plan to decorate more as time allows, but each piece is special. “Everything here has a story to tell,” Nathan said with a smile and twinkle in his eye. H

GET TO KNOW
GET GOING TO GET
ACTIVE AGAIN
STORY BY PAMELA A. KEENE PHOTOS BY SCOTT ROGERS
M
azie Ostervold was accustomed to being active, until about three years ago when health issues got in the way. “My husband Jim and I were traveling extensively,” says Mazie, who lives in Flowery Branch. “When my health declined, travel became more difficult and affected my mobility. I had been regularly walking about three miles in under 55 minutes. It took a while for my limitations to sink in; I literally went from an active adult in my 70s, to a couch potato.” So, by her own admission, she simply stopped trying. “I didn’t want to just sit around in a chair and watch life go by,” she says, “but I was at a point where I had to lean on railings or on my husband’s arm for balance. It was just too frustrating.” Her diagnosis of osteoarthritis was
painful and medication helped, but she says that she didn’t want to be dependent. “I went to my doctors and asked them what I could do to become active again, especially in light of my joint pain and weakened muscles.” Their solution was to prescribe physical therapy so that Mazie could work her way back to an activity level she could accept. Now she goes three days a week and has progressed from leg lifts with no weight and stepping over a row of red Solo cups to playing Wii games on a balancing pad and increasing her stamina on a stationary bicycle. She works with the physical therapists and also repeats the exercises at home. “I’m building up the strength in my quadriceps to help with my walking and balance, but the other exercises are helping as well,” she says.
Physical therapist Jered Schleicher with Lanier Therapy in Motion in Flowery Branch suggests first checking with your physician before beginning any exercise program. “Once your doctor gives you the okay, the key is to start out slowly,” he says. “And if anything you’re doing causes any pain or discomfort, stop right away.” He recommends starting with a basic cardiovascular workout, perhaps walking five minutes a day or every other day at a consistent pace. “You don’t need to walk quickly at first, just keep moving,” he says. “Be aware of any signals your body might be sending, such as shortness of breath, dizziness or any immediate pain. And if you’re concerned or these symptoms persist, check in with your physician.” Map out a plan, stick to it, gradually increasing either the number of minutes you

“Start out slowly, listen to your body and build your fitness over time.” — Jered Schleicher walk, or the speed at which you walk for the same amount of time. Then you can build stamina over time. In Northeast Georgia there are several places to connect with other people trying to improve their fitness and activity level, such as local health clubs or mall walkers. And for people on Medicare, certain plans include gym or health club membership in Silver Sneakers, a program to encourage seniors to be more active. “It’s more fun to exercise or walk with others who have similar goals,” Jered says. “In many cases, people who have ended up with a sedentary lifestyle can gradually regain mobility, but the key is to realize that there’s no overnight fix,” he says. “Start out slowly, listen to your body and build your fitness over time. When you exercise consistently, you’ll be surprised how your mobility can improve.” Mazie and her husband are planning an overseas trip later this fall, their first of 2019. “We used to take several larger trips each year, but for the past 18 months or so, we’ve really cut back,” she says. “Since I started increasing my activity and working with a physical therapist, my confidence and stamina are returning. I’m so looking forward to being able to walk on cobblestone streets without having to use a cane or lean on my husband to get around. “You know as we all get older, everyone at our age has something to deal with,” she says. “I just want to be able to keep up with our friends without needing assistance. Jim and I both have a whole lot more living to do, and I’m not going to just give up.” H
