Ambassadors and the Chamber:

A winning combination - the Ambassador program of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce is a great way to promote a business brand, as well as learn more about the community.

Ambassadors serve a very important role in the Chamber organization. The team represents the Chamber in the community and serve as liaisons between staff and members. “I truly cannot imagine our chamber without our Ambassadors,” Chamber President Christie Moore said. “Our Ambassadors are there to lend an understanding ear to their fellow small businesses. They are our local business community’s greatest cheerleaders and their passion for supporting each other and our community is inspiring.”

The team attends ribbon cutting ceremonies and events where they work to create welcoming and supportive atmospheres and help staff ensure that everything runs smoothly. Ambassadors also help spread the word of the Chamber’s mission of “Cultivating a successful economic environment and a desirable quality of life for our businesses and community.”

“With nearly 500 members, we rely heavily on our Ambassador team when it comes to making sure our members feel welcome and are taking advantage of all their member benefits,” Chamber Membership Director Melissa Mayton said.

Ambassadors are recognized monthly for their hard work and the Ambassador of the Year is announced at the annual gala.

for 2019. “I really enjoy the relationships that are made by being involved in the Ambassador program,” Bethany said. “I love meeting and supporting other small businesses in the community. Being a small business owner myself, I understand the ‘blood, sweat, and tears’ it takes to successfully own a business and having a support system with other Chamber businesses is rewarding. My love for the Ambassador program was demonstrated and learned from my fellow Ambassador, co-business owner, and husband Ken Goines. It’s awesome being in this program with my husband.”

The program isn’t just about promoting the Chamber. It also gives the Ambassador an opportunity to share a little about his or her own business and build relationships in the community.

Which is what Juice Plus consultant Cathy Holcombe enjoys about the program. “Building relationships builds trust,” Holcombe said. “And it is my hope that as I remain involved with local activities, others will realize my mission of inspiring healthy living in our community.” Ambassadors meet monthly to network, share feedback and learn the latest updates in the business community.

Advocacy: Always an ally and voice for business At the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, the mission statement is, “Cultivating a successful economic environment and a desirable quality of life for our businesses and community.”

At the heart of that mission statement lies one of the biggest Chamber member benefits—an advocate for your business.

“At the Chamber, we are always here to provide a voice and support for our members, whether that is at a local, state or federal level,” Chamber President Christie Moore said. “One of our main objectives is to clear the path so you can do what you do best—build and grow your business.”

In 2018 and 2019, the Dawson County Chamber Board of Directors took action to avoid or at minimum reduce the potential ramifications that county impact fees could have on the local economy. Chamber President Christie Moore spoke as the voice of business during Dawson County Commission meetings in favor of reducing the impact fees that were reinstated in August of 2018. After many meetings and presentations that included intense research and testimonies from local business owners, the fees were reduced to a rate that more competitively aligns Dawson County impact fees with those in surrounding and similar counties.

“Had impact fees remained at the rate originally set, our community would not have been competitive in seeking the high-wage firms and industries we wish to recruit to Dawson County,” Moore said. “We are now in a much stronger position to gain employers who can pay desirable wages which in turn improves the quality of life for our community.”

The Chamber also works closely with Dawson County’s state legislators to ensure laws are not enacted that would impede entrepreneurs and small business success in Georgia. In 12

A roundtable event hosted by the Dawson County Chamber is just one of the many ways the chamber works to be an advocate and ally for its members.

May, the Chamber hosted a Georgians First Commission Roundtable with Representative Kevin Tanner, Georgians First Executive Director Scott Hilton, local business leaders, and members of the Dahlonega-Lumpkin Chamber. The roundtable allowed business owners the opportunity to discuss any issue that might be hurting the success of their business. Business leaders shared about issues ranging from local transportation concerns to tedious forms required by the state to the wage requirements structure in Georgia. The Georgians First Commission is a task force created by Governor Brian Kemp to review state regulations, policies, and procedures to streamline government, remove inefficiencies, and secure Georgia’s place as the top state for small business in the country.

The Chamber has also worked closely on Special Purpose Local Option Sales

Tax (SPLOST) and Education-SPLOST campaigns. “We are continually working to decrease the property tax burden on our businesses and citizens. When 85 percent of sales tax dollars comes from people who do not reside in our county, we are ardent supporters of the SPLOST and ESPLOST initiatives as ways to remove undue burdens and provide a higher local quality of life,” Moore said.

“While we have always been a voice for our businesses, this year we are working even harder to keep our members in the know on what we are advocating for to support them. We will continue to push for making Dawson County the best place to do business in what is already the number one state for business,” Moore said.

Chamber launches SMART Plan Group plan offers affordable insurance options for small business members The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, have come together to offer the Georgia Chamber SMART (SMART) insurance plan to small businesses across the state as part of a shared commitment to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for more Georgians.

This new comprehensive health plan offers rate stability and potential savings for groups with two to 50 eligible employees by allowing smaller employers to join together to share in the overall claims risk. By being part of a larger, selffunded pool, employers have greater financial protection fully backed by Anthem. And the SMART plan provides access to Anthem’s broad network of quality healthcare providers throughout Georgia.

“This is a further extension of our commitment to making high quality healthcare more accessible and affordable for people and businesses here in Georgia,” said Jeff Fusile, president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia. “Working with the chamber, we will be able to give small businesses in this state an affordable option to help keep employees and their families healthy and connected to quality care.”

The SMART plan administered by Anthem will provide robust benefits and coverage, as well as very competitive pricing creating more affordable options for small businesses in Georgia. Additionally, employers will be able to select Anthem dental, vision and life insurance coverage as part of their overall benefits package to address all of their employees’ health needs.

“This is an exciting new benefit to help Georgia’s small businesses in stabilizing premiums while getting the flexibility of plans offered by Anthem,” said Chris Clark, Georgia Chamber President & CEO. “Our friends at Anthem have been great partners throughout this process and I’d like to personally thank Jeff Fusile for his leadership in helping develop this Plan.”

Drugs Don’t Work in Georgia Program offers members money-saving opportunities To save some money on workers’ compensation premiums, Chamber members are encouraged to participate in the Drugs Don’t Work program, established by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.

“We are so happy we are able to partner with the Georgia Chamber to offer this money saving opportunity to our members,” Membership Director Melissa Mayton said. “It’s easy to get started and we have samples and resources at the Chamber to help a member get started with the program.”

Members wishing to participate in the program must prove they have substance abuse policy, complete two hours of supervisor training, two hours of employee education and offer a resource list of treatment and counseling in the area.

The certification saves members 7.5 percent on workers’ compensation premiums. Depending on the size of the business, the savings can be significant. For example, a residential construction company with six employees spends an estimated $14,886 on workers’ compensation. A Drugs Don’t Work discount would save the company $1,116.

Workers compensation for a retail store with 15 employees could cost upward of $2,535 per year. Drugs Don’t Work would save the retailer about $190.

Women in Commerce:

Program brings women together for leadership, bonding.

A new program that evolved from the former Women of the Chamber series has been launched by the Dawson County Chamber. The program is designed to strengthen female business relationships, teach new skills, and provide engaging experiences.

Women In Commerce, WINC, is a five-month series beginning in the summer and ending in October. The program gives women the opportunity to engage deeper in the areas of serenity, adrenaline, creativity, empowerment and wellness. The program is made possible by presenting sponsor Northside Hospital Forsyth and events are sponsored

by Associated Credit Union and PalmerHouse PropertiesKarmen Pharris.

“Women In Commerce is a great program for our female members to get together, experience new things and learn a little more about themselves,” Chamber President Christie Moore said. “We think this new program will be an exciting opportunity for women to take a break from their busy schedules and have fun with other female leaders in our

Past activities have included defensive driving at Atlanta Motorsports Park, shooting at Etowah Valley Sporting Clays and pottery painting at Outside the Lines! Art Studio, as well as core strengthening at Northside Hospital Forsyth.

Youth Leadership Dawson program graduates third class Future leaders of Dawson County recently graduated from a nine-month program hosted by the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce and Dawson County Board of Education.

Youth Leadership Dawson Class of 2019 led 14 sophomores and juniors from Dawson County High School through a variety of leadership skills training as well as visiting portions of the community not seen every day. The students also learned about industries and careers available to them in Dawson County.

The Youth Leadership Dawson program was launched as a class project of the Leadership Dawson Class of 2016. “Youth Leadership Dawson was a joint venture between the Dawson County School District and the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce that focused on providing students with a wide array of leadership experiences,� Dawson County School Superintendent and Leadership Dawson 2016 class member Dr. Damon Gibbs said. Students were nominated for the

The Amicalola Regional Farmers Market kicked off Friday, May 31st in Dawsonville.

The market is open every Friday throughout the summer from 3:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. This year, vendors are setting up in a new location at Dawsonville City Hall (415 Highway 53 East). The market will temporarily be held in the city hall parking lot but will move to its permanent location of the Farmers Market Pavilion upon completion, which is expected later this year. The Farmers Market Pavilion will be located on Allen Street, adjacent to city hall.

The third season of the market is being launched by the Amicalola Regional Agriculture Committee, a program of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce.

“Our Agriculture Committee has worked diligently to bring a market together that will offer fresh, local produce to our community,” Dawson County Chamber of Commerce President Christie Moore said. “We are grateful to the City of Dawsonville for providing space in the heart of our community to host the market.”

Making the market as locally grown as possible is a top priority for the committee. Vendors who participate in the market must show their produce is grown in Dawson County or a county that touches Dawson (Forsyth, Cherokee, Pickens, Hall, Gilmer, Fannin, Lumpkin). Local artisans offering handmade arts, crafts, soaps, honey and baked goods will also be at the market. Nonprofit organizations are also invited to sell baked goods. The committee offers the opportunity for local farmers and vendors to sell their goods at no charge.

Market Manager and Dawson County Extension Agent Clark MacAllister said he is grateful that local citizens have the opportunity to access fresh, local produce. “We are excited to continually expand the opportunities in Dawson County for customers and vendors at our new farmers’ market location,” MacAllister said. “The Amicalola Regional Farmers Market will continue to help connect local farmers with those seeking fresh food and farm-related products.”

Chairman’s Award - James Power 2018 Board Chair Mandy Power felt she had a lot of people she could have given the annual Chairman’s award to, but ultimately it was her number one cheerleader and husband, James Power, she selected.

“He has always been my biggest fan and I could not have served this community without the support of my husband, James Power,” Mandy said.

James Power has worked for Diamond Glass Company in Alpharetta for more than 15 years in residential and retail sales.

Diamond Glass Company has served the glazing and glass industry since 1977.

He and Mandy have three daughters and reside in Dawsonville.

Jim Wallace Volunteer of the Year - Ken Goines Ken Goines of KG Cleaning and KG Rug Spa was selected as this year’s Jim Wallace Volunteer of the Year.

Ken was recognized for his work with the Chamber, Rotary Club, Leap for Literacy, Interact Club. He was also heavily involved in selling brick sponsorships for the Leadership Dawson class fundraising project. “He is known across the board as lending a helping hand however he can,” Chamber President Christie Moore said.

Ambassador of the Year Bethany Goines Bethany Goines of KG Cleaning and KG Rug Spa was named the 2018 Linda Williams Ambassador of the Year.

“Between ribbon cutting ceremonies to volunteering at Chamber events to reaching out to members and gaining new members, she put 110-percent into everything she did this past year,” Ambassador Chair Anna Duncan said.

Bethany and her husband Ken own KG Cleaning and KG Rug Spa. She is native of Dawson County. She and Ken reside in Dawsonville with their two children.

Associated Credit Union was recognized for its work in the community in the less than two years since they opened their doors in Dawson County. “They recognized Dawson County was not their typical market and worked hard to adapt their business model to suit the needs of their new customers,” Membership Director Melissa Mayton said. Associated Credit Union has also made a mark in the community by giving back through its foundation to the Good Shepherd Clinic, Family Connection and others.

Manufacturing Excellence - Universal Servo Group Universal Servo Group, an industrial and robotics repair company, was selected as the Manufacturing Excellence award winner.

“With four hydraulic flow benches, three electronic labs, servo motor lab and a robotics division, our honoree has become a leader in the repair industry,” Economic Development Director Betsy McGriff said.

Universal Servo Group opened in 2002 and located in Dawson County in 2007.

They employ 20 full-time employees with more than 240 combined years of experience. They are a five-time Bulldog 100 winner, awarded to businesses owned by University of Georgia alumni.

Spirit of Leadership Dawson - Karla Thomason Dr. Karla Thomason of Dawson Vision was selected as the 2018 Spirit of Leadership Dawson award recipient.

“This person stepped up and chaired the Leadership Class of 2018 project, working many hours to encourage classmates to complete their tasks,” Award presenter and Leadership Dawson Committee Chair Carol Tyger, said, noting the hard work put into the Class of 2018 park outside the Chamber office.

Karla Thomason has worked with Dawson Vision since 2002. She is a graduate of Dawson County High School and has a doctorate of optometry from University of Alabama.

Outstanding Tourism Partner - North Georgia Premium Outlets North Georgia Premium Outlets were selected as the 2018 Outstanding Tourism Partner.

“Our honoree tonight plays an iconic role in Dawson County and has certainly helped put us on the map,” Tourism Committee Chair Eric Graves said. “Since our partner’s establishment in 1996, the role they have played in boosting our local economy has been a significant asset to our community.”

Teachers gain insight into local industry A select group of Dawson County teachers participated in the inaugural Dawson Discovery Tour.

Dawson Discovery Tour, an initiative of the Dawson County Chamber’s business and workforce development committee, was created to bring local industry leaders together with academic teachers to better understand the skills, needs and opportunities of the everchanging local economy.

The selected Dawson County School System teachers and staff toured local industry including Medical Plaza 400, Fort Dearborn, and BTD Manufacturing.

The tours were designed to expose teachers to on the job applications of

their academic subjects and to inspire the integration of those applications into their curriculum. Additionally, the experience was planned to expose teachers to the ample local opportunities that exist for future employment of their students.

“Many of our industrial facilities are not open to the public and if educators don’t have a personal experience with what goes on inside, they aren’t able to share those potential career paths with their students,” said Betsy McGriff, Chamber Economic Development

Director, “Our goal for Dawson Discovery Day was to show our educators what an important role they play in economic development - a well-trained workforce is critical to the community’s ability to compete for new business and industry locations.”

The 26 teachers and staff that participated in Dawson Discovery Day were selected from Dawson County High School and Junior High and cover a wide range of academic subjects. At the conclusion of the tours, participants gathered for lunch at the Goodwill Career Center to better understand the services they offer and to brainstorm ways to apply what they discovered throughout the day into their classroom work.

“There is a common misconception that retail jobs are the only employment opportunities in our community,” said Christie Moore, Dawson County Chamber President, “While our retail sector plays a very important role in our local economy, this day shed light on the growing employment needs and opportunities in medical services, robotics, manufacturing, human resources, IT, welding, and other fields right here in Dawson County.”

Small businesses are the heart of Dawson County and keep the community’s economy and highly desirable quality of life thriving. For a business, getting the word out can sometimes be a challenge. Below are some free and lowcost options for increasing visibility to your business’s target market of customers.

A simple, but top-priority in marketing is ensuring clients and customers know where you’re located and when you operate. An easy way to do this is by making sure your business location is accurate on the most popularly used search engine and mapping device, Google.

Google My Business is a simple and free process. All you need to do is to sign up for a free Gmail account to get started.

Once signed up, visit business.google.com and Google My Business takes you step-by-step through the process of entering your business name, address, hours of operation, website, photos and more.

In addition to making sure your listing is accurate on Google Maps, Google My Business offers insights, keeps you on top of reviews and tracks the number of clicks on your phone number, driving directions and website visits.

The U.S. Small Business Administration also offers a variety of webinars to educate business owners. The Small Business Administration (SBA) also offers courses all yearround for business owners to view at little or no cost.

Another marketing tool for small businesses is the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. Dawson County chamber members with 10 or less employees receive a free membership to the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.

The Georgia Chamber offers Digital Education webinars for $25. Some of this year’s topics include: HR compliance and employee pay. You can also go back and review archived webinars for tools and tips. The SBDC office located in Gainesville offers training in planning, managing, finance and more.
