From the Community Manager

From the Community Manager Wow! This has really been a whirlwind 30 days since I began this chapter in my life. I am excited to be here learning the property and all of you. We are planning a formal meet and greet in January with an official date to follow. Because I have been here only a short time, I thought I would take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself and where I come from.

I was born and raised in a small northwest Florida town known as Crestview. It was a very small town up until the late 80s when Eglin Air Force Base really expanded. As stated, Crestview was a small town with one main street where all of the businesses lined each side of the street and was in many ways like Cresswind. Everyone knew everyone else and life was great. It was where everyone came and did business, bought their groceries, got a haircut, and went to the theater.

Crestview was so small that the veterinarian and taxidermist shared the same sign on the building. There was a little sign on the door that said, “ Welcome, Come On In” with another little sign below that said, “ EITHER WAY YOU GET YOUR PET BACK.” As all young people, I wanted to conquer the world and after doing a 14 year stint in the Florida Department of Corrections… as a Correctional Officer, I began my career in property management as a property manager in Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee. I am committed to this job and have gained industry certification as a Certified Manager of Community Associations ( CMCA), Association Manager Specialist (AMS), and Professional Community Association Manager (PCAM). I hold a Florida Community Association License and soon to be Georgia License. Unfortunately in the wild wild west of Tennessee as long as you can spell Tennessee, you can manage property. My wife Christy and I have three daughters and one son and three grandchildren. We are very excited to be here at Cresswind and look forward to a long relationship with the community.

Welcome Committee By: Sue Joninas The Welcome Committee has welcomed our new residents in Phases 3A and B during 2016. Since January 2016, we have welcomed 115 new residents including resales. Our next New Resident Coffee will be February 18, 2017 at 10:00 am in the Crow’s Nest at the Clubhouse. All new residents since September 2016, that not have attended, will be invited.

The new officers for 2017 will be Harriet Gershkowitz, Chair, Bev Peters, Vice Chair and Linda Caldwell, Secretary. In November, we also welcomed seven new members.

The Committee is working diligently to WELCOME all new residents to Cresswind. If you have not heard from a Welcome Committee person within four weeks of officially moving in, please let me know (this includes Resales). In 2017, new residents in Phase 3C will be on our list.

Cresswind LL Community Fund Celebrates First Year Success By: Cathy Hoskinson Less than a year has passed since the newly created Cresswind LL Community Fund held its first meeting and elected its board of directors. They went to work without hesitating to formulate their mission and vision statements and develop a strategic plan and set goals.

By year end, more than 150 residents became members. Over $10,000 was raised in support of the organizations key projects including handicap access for the clubhouse, additional defibrillators and a slant/stretch board for the exercise room. Additional grants will be announced for local organizations mid-month.

“The response from our Cresswind neighbors has been overwhelmingly supportive,” said Cathy Hoskinson, board president.

“Through our fundraising and volunteer efforts, we will enrich not only our own lives, but we will make a positive difference in our own community.”

Transition to Turnover Committee

GOLF CART OWNERS!

A Transition to Turnover Committee has been formed by the Advisory Committee. Bob Rivers is committee chair.

Its purpose will be to collaborate with the Community Manager, the Association Board, the Long-Range Planning Committee, and FirstService Residential to identify issues to be addressed and projects to be accomplished prior to turnover of our community to the Association. It is estimated that the turnover will occur early in 2019.

The Committee members are Jim Brannan, Vice Chair, John Morris and Helen O’Keefe, Co-secretaries, Dawn Charette, Gene Evans, John Mauldin, and John Gibbs. The Committee began meeting in November, 2016. So far, the committee has developed the outline of a Transition Plan and several key issues and priorities. If you wish to provide input, please contact the chair or one of the members of the committee.

The Committee will report at the annual meeting in January, 2017.

Nature Trail Update By: Bill Dickey In November, the Trailblazers added two more benches - one on Swallow Trail and one on Bluebird Trail. Look for them on your walks through the woods. We also have replenished the walking stick supply and will be adding a couple of bluebird houses near the trails (thank you, Dave Rusk).

This is great time to walk the trails if you hesitated during the warmer months- the cold-blooded critters are hibernating. You may see a couple of squirrels (or maybe a deer.) The grandkids may even enjoy it, too!

Fishing SIG News By: Toby Kelley Cresswind Fishing SIG had a successful “group fish” recently.

Thanks to the seven captains who volunteered to get us out on the water. We are planning a road trip to the fishing lectures at the Atlanta Boat Show, fishing school, and perhaps- when the stripers begin to cooperate- a “group fish” featuring Cresswind kayak fishermen trying to catch some really big fish.

While fishing for crappie on our fish light, there were a couple of surprising catches made recently. Two big flathead catfish were landed - the biggest one, 13+ pounds pictured here, was caught by Sue Peterson.

Even with John Peterson’s and Dewey Colbaugh ‘s help - it takes a great fisher person to land a monster like this on six pound line at night. Great fishing Sue!

Singles & Solos Group By: Christi Lazear Besides holiday parties and lunch or dinner at different cafes, the Singles & Solos Group have also had a picnic at the Gainesville Marina, outdoor games at the Club Pavilion, a pool party, a trip to a monastery, horseback riding, white water rafting, a wine cruise, and attendance at numerous concerts and plays. The year ended with a great Christmas Party in the Crow’s Nest. Plans for 2017 include a bowling outing, Super Bowl party, Wine in the Woods, hiking and always fun and frivolity! It is a great way to meet and socialize with other single people.

The last quarter of 2016 represented a busy and exciting time for the Travel Club. Not only did we have great trips planned but we were also in the process of electing and announcing the new board and officers for 2017. The board members elected for 2017 are Mary Hensien, Hal Flomerfelt, Gale Pendergast, Phil Vinyard, Nancy Alexander, Jerry Cox, Sheran Connolly, and O.J. Gonzalez.

October had many of our members out on the lake with our first Fall Flotilla on Lake Lanier. Of course, it had to be a little cool on that day but we had a hot lunch from ChickFil-A and great fun was had by all. In November, we had a trip to the Fox for the play “Cabaret” with a buffet dinner at Mary Macs and also in November a trip to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino which was open to our entire community and outside friends. The bus was full with 47 Cresswinders and 9 outside guests.

We finished the year with a trip to St. Augustine, FL, in December with a stay at the fabulous Renaissance World of Golf Village Resort. Great meals, tours, venues, and a little golf was enjoyed on this trip. Come to a meeting in 2017 and find out more about upcoming trips.

Veterans Club By: Roy Gogel

Thank you for supporting the cold weather clothing drive for needy Veterans and their families. The Veterans Club works with other Veteran organizations to distribute these items. Some items were distributed through the American Legion in November; the remainder of the items are stored in a Marine Corps League warehouse and distributed as needed by the Disabled American Veterans throughout the winter. Your support is appreciated and our coordination results in items being distributed directly to those in need. Thank you.

In December, we provided holiday meals to the 16 Veterans we support regularly in the Hall County Superior Court. Club members serve as their mentors, interface with them regularly, and appear before the Judge monthly as support for the individual.

Hospice has had several needs lately to which Club members are involved, participating in Service Recognition ceremonies to thank the Hospice patient for their service to this nation.

Peace Renewed Eagle Ranch offers a peaceful, stable environment to promote healing for children and their families. Boys and girls live in one of our 10 on-campus residential homes, gaining the space and time they need to work through their struggles.

Families stay connected throughout their child’s time in our program. Our goal is renewal: restoring peace and unity in families for a more promising future.

Cresswind Dinner Group By: Karen Silverthorn Dinner Group is in its 5th year in our community. What a wonderful way for neighbors to become friends over the dinner table. Anyone can join at any time during the year. November participants enjoyed a Moroccan dinner straight from the Kasbah!

There are two remaining sit-down dinners for the 20162017 season. February 4, 2017, will be a Mardi Gras menu and March 4, 2017, will be a spring themed dinner.

All recipes are provided and participants at each house make the same food courses. Food and beverage costs (average $35 - $50 per couple) are shared equally among the eight participants at each house.

Genealogy Club By: Dave Dittmeier The Genealogy Club did not meet during November or December due to conflicts with Holiday celebrations. The Club meets the fourth Wednesday of the month, and interesting sessions are being planned for next year. Fun with Fashions Debuts at Cresswind!

The first event of the newly formed Fun with Fashions Club was a sold out event. Over 150 women were seated at colorfully decorated tables and ate a delicious lunch catered by The Colored Egg. Then all were wowed by fashions from the Bradford Pear here in Gainesville and modeled by beautiful, talented residents of Cresswind.

Men’s Bible Study

An in depth study of 1 Peter was completed and now the Men’s Bible Study is delving into the Book of Proverbs, following the book by Warren Wiersbe Be Skillful. The Book of Proverbs, written by King Solomon, is as pertinent today as it was when it was written in the 10th century BC. Proverbs 1:1-2 sets the purpose for the Book: “for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight…” Unpacking Scriptures and related discussions on a weekly basis have given the men in attendance a better understanding of Scripture and its relevance to today’s world. All men of Cresswind are welcome to join us.

Women’s Bible Study

In December, the Women’s Bible study completed a study of the book of Hebrews led by our gifted teacher and neighbor, Brenda Uhler. Among the possible considerations for 2017 are studies of the books of Galatians, Ephesians, Philippines, and Colossians. Also on a monthly basis, we will continue to offer a time of prayer and devotion. We encourage new members to join the more than 20 women who gather each Thursday from 4 to 5:15 pm in the Computer Conference Room.

Winter Bingo Night

Community Chorus

Join us for a very special Winter Bingo Night on Tuesday, January 31, at 7:00pm in the Ballroom for lots of fun and prizes. Cost is only $10 person an wristbands will go on sale in early January. Bingo always sells out, so don’t get left out by waiting too long.

Monday, January 9th, our Cresswind Community Chorus will resume rehearsals after a holiday break.

Rehearsals are at 3:00pm and 7:00pm, but you are only expected to come to one. New members are welcome, so if you would like to join please just show up. No audition is required.

Our Spring Music Spectacular is April 28-30th and we will be singing songs like “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, “Yesterday”, “God Bless America”, “Twistin’ at the Hop”, “Let There Be Peace on Earth”, “Surfin’ USA” and “You’ve Got a Friend”.
