Relaxation methods to curb holiday craze

The holidays are fraught with pitfalls of frenzy.

Family drama, overspending while shopping, indulging in too many goodies, traveling, taking time away from work — any number of things can derail the season of joy and cause it to don the cloak of chaos.

For that reason, the staff at The Spa on Green Street recommends taking time to relax in November, December and January.

“People get so busy with the season, and they don’t really focus on relaxing,” said Carmen Chambers, a yoga instructor at the Gainesville business.

Jill Cross, who helps run the spa, agrees. She said she often books appointments for people who are overwhelmed with everything that Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s brings.

“We see it happen all the time,” she said. “People come in, in a frenzy.”

For that reason, she and other staffers at The Spa on Green Street compiled a list of tips to help North Georgia residents release tension. And the first tip is the most vital, Chambers said.

Find your relaxation activity “The most important thing is that you find something that relaxes you,” Chambers said. “You have to find what works for you that you enjoy. Not everything is right for everybody. You have to find what you love to do and what you are able to do.”

Get a facial

Cross happens to love the facials offered at the spa.

“They’re just so wonderful,” she said. “You can fall asleep in them, with the warm rooms and the soft pillows and the serene music.”

Rub your feet

A good foot rub can also go a long way to relaxing.

“Pounding the pavement when you’re shopping can be really rough on the feet,” Cross said. “We do a reflexology massage for the feet here that just rejuvenates.”

Breathe deeply

Another way to rejuvenate the body, as well as the spirit, is to simply take a few deep breaths, Chambers said.

“Take a few nice, deep, slow breaths, and let that release some of your tension,” she said.

Get up and stretch While you’re breathing deeply, stretch.

“Obviously, as a yoga instructor, I love to stretch,” Chambers said. “When you stretch, you are letting go of all that tension and offset all the busyness of the season.”

Take a cleansing bath

Cross also suggests using a hot bath with Himalayan or Epson salts to draw out the toxins that build up from tension.

“That’s one of the best ways to relax,” she said.

Meditate

Meditation is another option for people seeking some serenity amid the hustle and bustle.

“You have to quiet your mind, not just your body,” Chambers said.

But don’t ignore the body, either, Chambers is quick to say. She recommends the basic yoga move known as Child’s Pose for those looking to let go of knots.

Child’s pose is lying down on the floor with your knees tucked underneath your body. Your forehead is touching the floor, and your arms are stretched in front of you or tucked behind you.

Sit in a hot sauna

Cross says once you’ve done some of the stretching and yoga and deep breathing, those looking to relax their muscles even more can sit in a sauna.

She said to let the heat make the muscles grow more soft and pliable.

Full-body massage

“A good massage does wonders,” said Cross, who added it leads to the ultimate relaxation.

While all of these options work, Chambers said, she also recommends people investigate what makes their spirits soar.

“I like to do my yoga and my stretching and my breath work, but I also like to read and to listen to music and to do aromatherapy,” she said.

“Really, relaxing is all about doing what you love.”

ways to eat less during the holidays

The holidays are meant to be a time for giving. But too often, it becomes the season of giving in to temptations.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the common claim is the typical American gains an average of 5 pounds in the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. And each of the holidays is known for a signature dish or treat.

A bit too much gravy in November, a few too many cookies in December and an extra glass or two of champagne in the first wee morning hours of January can pack on the pounds.

It doesn’t take much, said the staff at Obesity Solutions, a weight-loss program offered through The Longstreet Clinic in Gainesville.

“In my personal opinion, the holidays are one of those times when people feel like they don’t have to be so restricted. That they can splurge a little, because it is the holidays,” medical receptionist Whitney Swing said.

“When people think celebration, they associate it with food.”

For that reason, she and the rest of the staff at Obesity Solutions compiled a list of tips to help North Georgia residents avoid overindulgence.

Chew slowly

Show up a little late

The slower you chew, the more time your food has to reach your stomach. That means you’ll be satiated sooner, thus avoiding extra calories.

Although nobody is suggesting you be rude and appear four hours after the event was supposed to end, Swing said arriving to a buffet meal a bit after the main crush is a good idea. You will not be in line with people and tempted to fill your plate the same way.

Drink after you eat Although you might have heard glugging water during a meal has benefits, the clinic recommends the opposite.

“Do not drink with your meal,” Swing said. “Drink after.”

Not only does this mean you fill your body with the proteins that will curb your appetite long term, it ensures your body has the proper acids to ideally break down nutrients and get those good bits into your system.

Use a small salad plate instead of a full-size dinner plate “That way, you run out of room on your plate a lot more quickly, and it tricks you into thinking you got more,” Swing said.

Plan ahead “If you want to bring your own dish that’s a healthy option, that’s great,” Swing said.

Drink plenty of water While this tip might seem most obvious, it’s for good reason. It’s one of the most important, since many people confuse thirst for hunger. So staying hydrated can prevent cravings.

Avoid social snacking Basically, don’t sit around and chat with a big tray of food at hand.

“Don’t hover over that food,” Swing said.

“And don’t just have unending amounts at hand while you’re talking with your friends and family.”

Go for protein first Not only does reaching for chicken before chips get you fuller faster and keep you fuller longer, it helps stave off those pesky sugar crashes following carb binges.

Socialize more “When people think celebration, they think food,” Swing said. “People don’t always focus on the socialization aspect.”

She recommends spending time playing cards with your grandparents, chatting with your cousins or any other one of the numerous options involving quality interaction rather than returning to the buffet for second or third helpings.

Have an accountability partner When you feel tempted to reach for a second piece of pie, your designated dieter friend can talk you off the ledge if need be.

Whatever tip works best for you, the best tip of all is to just enjoy the time with loved ones and not take any missteps too seriously, according to staff at Obesity Solutions.

“Obviously, no one is perfect,” Swing said. “It’s not about how you fall down but how you get back up.”

Spreading cheer and celebrating with friends and family is a tradition for many.

When it comes to making your house the talk of the neighborhood this holiday season, several area experts share their advice for holiday entertaining and decor.

Ginny Early favors a simple and elegant style. She owns Enemies of the Average, a Gainesville-based company that offers a variety of creative services including event design and creative direction and food styling.

“My goal in setting a table is always to make my guests want to linger around it for hours,” Early said. “Belgian linen napkins, antique flatware and perfectly sized glasses are inviting to the touch and make guests feel welcomed. Keeping glasses full and serving family-style will keep your dinner party going and the conversation flowing.”

However, if you’re considering a buffet or finger foods, Early said you can’t go wrong with a cheese board.

“It’s fun to compose, and it encourages sharing,” she said. “Rounding out the cheese and crackers with charcuterie, preserves, honey and nuts can almost make a whole meal.”

Elizabeth Thompson of House Dressing Interior Design recommends adding different levels of height to your table with florals and candlesticks. But make sure to leave the space at face

level open to foster conversation.

“Once you decide on buffet or family-style serving, choose pieces that incorporate well with your decor while being functional for the food you are serving,” Thompson said.

When it comes to making the table more festive, Early recommends using seasonal greenery.

“The colors of changing autumn leaves are a beautiful element to bring to your table, and fruits such as pomegranates and pears add textural interest,” she said.

CJ Greene, who co-owns Friday’s Flowers with her sister Leigh Justice, agrees.

“This time of year is a great time to cut natural greenery,” she said.

Greene suggests small leaf magnolia, cypress or nandina berries.

Another suggestion from Greene is to visit a Christmas tree lot and ask for trimmings.

Bring the trimmings home, clean them and soak them in water to prolong their freshness. They can be placed in a large plastic container with water and a bit of dish soap before setting them out, Greene said.

Those trimmings can be used around the home to decorate a mantle or mailbox for example.

Early even suggests using the fresh trimmings to decorate the kitchen area, if only for its scent.

“I love to decorate in a way that highlights the natural textures and colors of the holiday seasons,” Early said.

She said the holidays can be a time of excess and visual overstimulation.

“A minimalist design with a simple color palette, like a few pine branches artfully arranged in a vase, will speak to your holiday theme while giving your eye a chance to rest,” she said. “In nature we find beautiful greens and neutrals that complement any home decor. Greene agreed with a more natural, simple look. She suggested using less sparkles while decorating.

Early said white, clear, gold and silver ornaments or decorations are always in style.

“Depending on your style, you can choose to go more glitzy or rustic,” she said. “For the glitz or glam, you can use mercury glass, which has been very popular recently in silver, gold and blue hues. And it can easily be incorporated with other gold or silver ornaments that you already have.”

For a rustic style, antlers and pheasant feathers are timeless additions coupled with clear glass and gold ornaments and decorations.

The lyric, “Here we come a-wassailing among the leaves so green,” is instantly recognizable by anybody who has ever gone caroling.

But just what is “a-wassailing,” and how does that Christmas song relate to the beverage of the same name?

“I’m not sure, but I do know this recipe is pretty profound,” Rebekah Stillwell said.

The assistant manager of The Simmons-Bond Inn has spent the past several years serving her family’s drink at the historical bed and breakfast in Toccoa.

“Well, I actually call it wassail cider, because it’s made mostly of apple juice,” she said. “And when I think of apples, I think of cider. But the original recipe called it wassail. So I wanted to keep that part of it, as it is supposed to reflect older times.”

Embracing days of yore is practically Stillwell’s job description. In her role, she is responsible for ensuring all guests of the inn enjoy the historical building that proudly displays its heritage. The 20-room Queen Anne mansion was built in 1903 by renowned Georgia architect E. Levi Prater for lumber baron James B. Simmons, who wanted his wife, Antoinette, to live in a palatial setting worthy of her royal name.

“Everything about the inn really adds to it being a masterpiece of the 20th century,” Stillwell said. “It’s a

big showcase of woodwork, stained glass and cut glass. And everything is original to that time.”

Which is why so many people love to pass part of the holiday season at the retreat, where vintage décor proves pervasive and perfect.

“It’s so festive here,” she said. “It definitely takes you back to and gives you a spirit of Christmases past.”

That is why Stillwell decided her guests deserved a vintage beverage, as well. As it just so happened, her sister had a recipe for exactly such a thing.

“I don’t know where she got it from, but it’s magical,” Stillwell said.

While the recipe has some modern twists (for example, pineapple juice plays a feature role), it incorporates the traditional ingredients that has allowed it to stand the test of time.

“We absolutely use the nutmeg and the cloves and the cinnamon,” she said.

While the term “wassail” originated from the old Norse word “ves heil,” which translates roughly into “be in good health,” the ancient warriors used the term as a toast when drinking. Eventually the name Wassail was applied to the punch, which incorporated such exotic seasonings as the now standard cloves and nutmeg.

In the 1600s, holiday revelers started to bring their punch to seasonal events, and the tradition has taken its place in today’s culture as a hot cider to be served in the cold winter months.

“It’s the perfect thing to serve to our guests as they curl up next to the fireplace with a book,” Stillwell said.

Let simmer, uncovered, for at least 10 minutes.

Discard fruit and cinnamon sticks before serving.

The holidays are a time for giving. What better way to spread holiday cheer than volunteering?

Hall County has many options to give back by donating to food drives, helping domestic violence victims, providing toys to less fortunate children or loving on homeless animals.

“It is very important to volunteer, regardless of where you choose to volunteer,” said Avein Gober, volunteer and outreach coordinator at the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia. “There are so many wonderful community organizations, people and causes that depend on the work that volunteers do. Oftentimes, volunteers are the ‘backbone’ of any cause.”

Gober said volunteers bring passion to their service, and their work helps make communities better.

The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia has a small staff and relies on volunteers to ensure each animal gets the care it deserves.

HSNEGA’s top priority is to find “furrever” homes with an emphasis on quality and passionate care for all animals.

“Since we deal with live animals, it is extremely important that we try to mimic their lives outside of the facility, by making sure that they have adequate exercise, proper dieting and important companionship and socialization with humans,” Gober said.

Action Ministries Mountain Region Director Tina Grubbs agrees volunteers are life-changers.

Action Ministries mobilizes communities to address the challenges of poverty by focusing on hunger relief, housing and education.

“Our programs are designed to engage volunteers at every level to meet the needs in local communities,” she said. “Whether it’s serving lunches during the summer, reading to children, donating linens to a family in need or packing food boxes, we can’t do it alone.”

To help area residents decide on where to offer their time and money this year, the following is a list of places to volunteer this holiday season.

Meals on Wheels Approximately 350 seniors receive hot lunches delivered by friendly volunteers each Monday through Friday. For some seniors, this daily visit may be the only social interaction they have during the day.

How to help: Deliver meals within the city of Gainesville. Routes take approximately one hour; training provided.

Type of drivers needed: • Delivery — pick up meals from a designated site and deliver to client homes.

Meal routes operate Monday through Friday.

Pickup time is between 10:30 -11:30 a.m.

• Satellite site drop-off — Pickup meal bags from the Meals on Wheels distribution site and deliver to one of the satellite sites in North Hall, South Hall or Clermont.

• Substitute — Fill in when regular volunteers are unable to delivery their route.

Volunteers must submit to a background check. Background fee is $10.
