Our Chamber is always busy... bringing new businesses to our community, assisting our existing businesses, holding ribbon cuttings, showing emerging leaders all our county has to offer through Leadership Hall County and Youth Leadership Hall, hosting informative seminars and forum and so much more. The Chamber offers members so many ways to network from Business After Hours and Lunch 'n Learn to Network Over Coffee. There is always something always happening throughout the year including our HealthSmart Expo, Job Fair, Buy Local/Safe & Green Expo, Eggs & Issues, Hackers Holiday Golf and Chamber Chase 5K. There is such a diversity of businesses here, and we are ever growing.

We've come a long way since that first chicken! In 2013-2014, 33 new and expanded businesses created 950 jobs and generated $180 million in capital investment for Gainesville-Hall County. International business continues to grow in Hall County with 44 international firms representing 18 countries located in Hall County. For many, Hall County serves as their North American headquarters. Gainesville-Hall County is the primary trade area serving over 462,000 Northeast Georgia residents. Retail is prospering with retail centers on Highway 53 expanding and the largest Kroger Marketplace in the Southeast opening on 365 North.

With 85% of the Chamber membership being small businesses, professionals join together monthly to discuss marketing, business strategic plans, HR services, technology, healthcare and other topics at Small Business Seminars and special Marketing Workshops with professionals in the industry with programs on social media, internet marketing, text/email marketing and the cloud. The Chamber’s Beautification Awards Program continues to recognize homeowners and businesses with beautiful landscapes. (See the spring residential award recipient on page 12.) Agriculture is recognized with and annual awards program as well as the annual Arbor Day celebration. The Healthcare Committee hosted monthly programs on important topics and will host a Healthcare Reform Update for the community on August 12.

It has been a wonderful experience to watch our Chamber staff at work – so dedicated and hard working and always striving to do their best. I've enjoyed this year serving as Chair of the Board of Directors. I have a much greater appreciation for all the work that happens on behalf of our business community. This is a Chamber that understands it's mission.

Chairman's Award to Deborah Mack

The W.G. Mealor Award is named after the first chairman/president of the Chamber, W.G. Mealor, who served from 1908-1917. The award is given by the Chairman to a Chamber volunteer who has gone beyond "the call of duty.”

Because of her parents' involvement in the community, an example was set for Deborah Mack to follow the same path. "When you see a person in need, you help. You just do it because you can do it!" This is the 2014 W.G. Mealor Chairman's Award recipients motto. We came to know Deborah Mack as a Hall County commissioner, where she served more than just politically. Deborah has worked as one of the women quietly behind the scenes for Gateway Domestic Violence Center, to make sure there is a safe haven for abused women and children. She is also the first individual to donate and help found WomenSource. The Chamber is a beneficiary of her talent as she serves as Vice Chair of Community Development working on healthcare issues, agribusiness events, beautification projects. She is always the first to support and attend Chamber events, wellness projects. Name it... with her many beautiful hats, she is a champion for our Chamber.

Philip Wilheit, Sr. a Gainesville-native and President and CEO of Wilheit Packaging, was presented the Distinguished Citizen Award.

Philip has served the Chamber for over 35 years and was recognized for his service to our community and the state. Following college graduation, Philip returned to Gainesville and joined his father's business. The 61 year-old company is a leading business in the Southeast, and as presenter Kit Dunlap noted, "if you have a business in Hall County, you are sure to have some of his boxes and toilet tissue!"

Kit recognized Philip as having meant more to our community and given more of his time and resources serving our state than anyone she knows. Philip's parents, Tom and Jane Eve Wilheit, set the example of giving and he Philip Wilheit, Sr. is the recipient has joined the legacy with wife, Mary Hart of the Distinguished Citizen Award.

Philip has served as top volunteer, chair or president of dozens of organizations including United Way, Eagle Ranch, Boys & Girls Club, Gainesville Rotary, Chattahoochee Country Club, Grace Episcopal Church, Gainesville Bank & Trust, Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority, Brenau University, Northeast Georgia Health System, the Greater Hall Chamber, Gainesville Hall County Development Council, and Gainesville & Hall County Development Authority. Statewide, he has been involved with the Georgia Chamber, Leadership Georgia, Georgia Board of Education, Georgia Department of Economic Development, and the Georgia Board of Regents, currently serving as chairman. In her concluding remarks, Kit noted that Philip "pays attention to the small things and makes big things happen."

2014 Family Business of the Year McGarity's Business Products The McGarity family became involved in the office furniture and office supply business in 1949 when Hank McGarity went to work for the Mississippi School Supply Company following service in World War II. In 1965, Hank’s brother John joined him in the field where they both worked as manufacturer’s representatives. In 1979, John gave up his traveling salesman job and started his own company, North Georgia Business Products on the Square in Downtown Gainesville. Son Scott joined the business in 1982 and Family Business of the Year Award Recipients soon after, the name was changed Scott and Cami McGarity of McGarity's to McGarity’s Business Products.

Following John’s retirement in 1996, Scott bought the business and continues to operate the company with his wife, Cami. They employ 21 people and work out of a facility with a 15,000 square foot office furniture showroom and a 30,000-foot warehouse/distribution center in midtown Gainesville. “Our philosophy is simple,” states Scott. Community Service Award Think About It Campaign The recipients of the Community Service Award include three driving forces behind the Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) Foundation's "Think About It" Campaign to reduce prescription drug abuse in the state, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now proclaims an epidemic. The recipients include co-chairs, Dallas Gay, Gainesville business leader; Dr. Tennant Slack, an interventional pain management physician with the Northeast Georgia Physicians Group; and, Dr. Jack Chapman, president of the MAG Foundation and an ophthalmologist Tennant Slack, MD, speaks on behalf of with Gainesville Eye Associates. While the MAG Foundation's "Think About It statewide in its scope, the "Think About Campaign," recipient of the Community It Campaign" has its roots in Hall Service Award.

County as Dallas and Dr. Slack have made numerous presentations to area schools, businesses and civic groups along with providing educational resources to over 90% of the medical practices in Hall County. Governor Nathan Deal and Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and our local legislators' support of this issue is appreciated. Volunteer gardeners and residents of the Village at Deaton Creek were recently presented with the Chamber's Residential Beautification Award. The volunteers received the award for implementing and maintaining gardens at the development that include a butterfly demonstration garden, compost bin, tool shed, fire pit with seating and soon a beautiful, wooden bridge covering a dried stream bed. The volunteers work tirelessly to maintain the garden, plant native species and other plants and create a beautiful garden space for all the community at the Village at Deaton Creek to enjoy.

The class participated in a series of interactive discussions with community leaders, explored local industries and organizations through on-site visits, learned about area challenges and opportunities and discovered new ways to engage in the community.

They will now put their knowledge to work by completing individual and group service projects. A VISION 2030 senior leadership program, WP was developed by the Chamber and Brenau University’s Center for Lifetime Study. The program is designed for age 55+ members of the community and seeks to encourage individuals to use their wisdom and talents in creative ways through action and advocacy. Nominations and applications are currently being accepted for the Fall 2014 Session. The Fall 2014 Session begins with a kick off on August 14 and will include seven (7) class sessions, concluding on November 21, 2014.
