As I finish off the last of the Thanksgiving turkey and write this article, I am reminded of how fortunate we are to live in this dynamic community with a healthy business climate, strong leadership and unparalleled quality of life.

Our Chamber is considered one of the most progressive in the State, and I am honored to be a part of such a successful organization. Recent census data indicates Gainesville-Hall County has a primary trade area serving a population of over 500,000 Northeast Georgia residents and is the region’s major retail center. Our community offers the unique opportunity to shop at a variety of independent, small businesses as well as large retailers. Take advantage of the diverse shopping alternatives here in Gainesville-Hall County. Keep our tax dollars local and boost our area economy. With the Holiday Season upon us, I am mindful of our members consisting mainly of small businesses. In fact, 85% of Chamber members are small businesses, and many of these are retail establishments. Main Street Gainesville's Jingle Mingle last month kicked off the season with Santa and open houses at shops around the square. I encourage you to continue to support these and other stores scattered throughout Gainesville-Hall County and boost sales to keep our locals thriving. Your dollars spent with locally-owned businesses not only have a great impact on our economy, but also simultaneously create jobs, fund more services through sales tax, invest in neighborhood improvement and promote community development.

2016 Industry of the Year Awards Murray Plastics, Inc. She is responsible for facilitating Leadership Hall, Youth Leadership Hall, Medical Scholars, and Partners in Education. Andi is a graduate of North Georgia College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Parks and Recreation with a minor in Psychology. Andi has 20 years of experience in local and state government and has spent the last three years working with a local non-profit as the Director of Operations. NGMC to start Residency Program Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) has announced plans to develop a Graduate Medical Education (GME) program.

Medical students will be able to apply and receive hands-on training in one of six medical specialties: internal medicine, family medicine, general surgery, OB/ GYN, psychiatry and emergency medicine. The hospital has been awarded $4.5 million in matching funds through the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. These funds will help offset some $9 million in up-front investment in program facilities, leadership, faculty and other resources. The program’s first medical residents are projected to arrive at NGMC in 2019, and the hospital anticipates as many as 170 residents across six different specialties by 2024 – which would make the program one of the largest in the state. The Georgia Board of Physician Workforce states that medical students from Georgia who complete medical school and a GME program in Georgia have a roughly 80-percent chance of staying in the state to practice.

“Our goal is to go one step further and keep the best-of-the-best right here in our community,” says Carol Burrell, president and CEO of Northeast Georgia Health System. “Helping train the next generation of doctors is just another way we will achieve our mission of improving the health of our community in all we do.”

Medical benefits of the GME program include more patient care to medically uninsured/underinsured populations and a tremendous economic benefit to the Hall County – an estimated economic output of $66 million from 2019 to 2023, with an additional $18 million local economic impact for each year after.

Similarly, the program will generate more than 90 incremental community jobs in 2019, rising to as many as 300 jobs by 2023. nghs.com

The Bradford, located at 535 Forrest Avenue in Gainesville, is owned by Steve McKibbon and Robbie Robison of McKibbon-Robison. The original structure was built in 1978 and features a unique 1970’s era design. Steve and Robbie liked the location and were drawn to the roof shape and upgrade potential. They purchased the property in 2015. An extensive renovation stripped the existing units to the framing with the installation of all new electrical wiring, HVAC and appliances. The buildings are 85% new and include new porches providing a private, outdoor area for residents.

HomeStar Financial is located at 322 Washington Street in the historical Gym of ‘36 building in Gainesville. HomeStar purchased the facility in 2013 and began heavy renovations to turn the multi-tenant facility into HomeStar’s corporate headquarters. Work included opening-up staircases, while updating technology and fire and lighting in the building. Windows Wes Hunt, President & CEO (front left), with the HomeStar Team at the Gainesville headquarters. were a big part of the renovation process as they were original to the building. Stucco was removed from the front to reveal the original entrance of the building which is brick. Other original features that were incorporated include hardwood floors and some basketball court markings!
