As a unifying voice for business, the Greater Hall Chamber pursues an aggressive agenda with its Board of Directors, member businesses and staff to make state and local government more business-friendly and our business climate more competitive. The Chamber's government relations group leads efforts to advocate and protect your business and is the voice for your business in government. It actively develops and promotes policy positions on critical issues impacting the business community, as well as continuously asserts its role as the leading business organization on your behalf on all levels of government.

The Greater Hall Chamber's Government Affairs Division is lead by David Lee, Jackson EMC, and promotes policy priorities that support the expansion of business and furthers economic development. Our purpose is to influence our elected officials to establish regulations and Randall Frost policies that will improve the ability of a business to compete in the Stewart, Melvin & Frost 2012-2013 Chairman, Greater Hall worldwide economy and continue to generate income and jobs that will Chamber of Commerce help to enhance Gainesville-Hall County.

The Chamber's Issues Committee is committed to reviewing, developing, and supporting issues that promote a positive, pro-active economic environment with social progress and enhanced quality of life. The Chamber believes that laws and regulations should serve the public without acting as a detriment to business development and growth.

A fundamental component of the Chamber's mission is to advocate the views of the business community to our elected officials. This is done by engaging elected officials in meaningful policy discussions on your behalf. Every business, no matter how large or small, operates within a world of policy, regulations, laws, and long-range planning. Most government officials want to have a strong relationship with the people they serve. Therefore, businesses and the organizations that represent them, like the Greater Hall Chamber, have a duty to express their opinions and interests on matters that affect their community. Whether in Washington DC, the state capitol or town hall, the opinions of people in the officials’ home district are the most important influences on their decision.

For many years the Greater Hall Chamber has organized an annual pre-legislative forum to allow our business leaders and citizens the opportunity to discuss important issues with our elected officials.

The forum called Eggs & Issues provides a valuable means for our local legislative delegation to hear the concerns of its people. This year we will have the opportunity to include discussion at the state level with Georgia Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and State Senator Butch Miller. Also, new Congressman-Elect Doug Collins will be on hand to hear your concerns. Our delegates from the Georgia House will attend including Representatives Carl Rogers and Emory Dunahoo, Jr. along with Representative-Elect Lee Hawkins and Representative-Elect Timothy Barr.

We will meet on Thursday, December 13 at the Gainesville Civic Center from 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

Agribusiness in Hall County Abit Massey, president emeratus of the Georgia Poultry Federation was the keynote speaker at the Chamber's Farm City Breakfast. Abit's presentation included statistics and the latest Hall County farm rankings. Poultry farm value in Hall County and the nine bordering counties is more than the state-wide value of cotton, which is #2 to chickens. With the addtion of the next ring of 16 counties, it exceeds the state-wide value of Georgia's top six non-poulry products: cotton, peanuts, pecans, corn, hay and onions. Also interesting are the following statistics • Hall County is 10th in total farm gate value • Hall County is 7th in poultry & eggs (1st in processing and allied industries) • Hall County is 1st in horse boarding and training • Hall County is 4th in apples • Hall County is 6th in ag tourism • Hall County is 8th in livestock, strawberries and goats • Hall County is 10th in blackberries and grapes.

Georgia State Senator Butch Miller was on hand on November 1 to distribute awards to the 2012 Master Craftsmen... Builders of America. Presented by Lanier Technical College as part of the Featherbone Communiversity Masters Series, the 10 tradesmen were honored for their skills and dedication to their craft.

Some 85 students attended the event that sought to showcase the North Georgia craftsmens'' accomplishments while promoting careers in the construction industry and spotlight the "Go Build Georgia" campaign, an initiative of Governor Deal’s Office of Workforce Development. gobuildgeorgia.com

ProCare Rx, a national pharmacy benefit management company, recently held a Dedication Ceremony and Ribbon Cutting at the ProCare Park corporate campus.

The park, located on a 23-acre site fronting I-985 at Exit 20, houses ProCare Rx’s corporate headquarters with plans to develop a midrise office building as well as additional office/warehouse space and retail facilities fronting Candler Road. Founded in 1987, ProCare Rx administers and manages prescription drug benefits for millions of members delivering significant cost savings to client groups including self-insured employer groups, hospices, workers comp plans, insurance companies and other managed care organizations. In 1973, when Mike Wilson went to the University of Georgia to play football, the seniors gave him the nickname "Moonpie" and it's stuck, throughout his college career and 13 years of professional football. IOA Gainesville 2002-2012 In October 2002, Gerald Herring, Bruce Eades and Jason Peacock opened the Gainesville branch office for Insurance Office of America (IOA). IOA Gainesville became the 2nd office in Georgia and just the 4th office outside the state of Florida. Located in the Coca Cola building on Green Street, IOA began their quest to provide insurance and risk management to businesses throughout North Georgia. Shortly after opening their doors, they hired their first associate, Tricia Hushmire. The company motto for 2002 was simply: “Failure is not an option.”

2003 began with a flurry of activity including the landing of several key accounts, many of which are still clients to this day. In May of 2003, account manager, Pam Miller joins the team. Their operation continued to grow requiring the move to a new office in the Wachovia Center (Wells Fargo). IOA Gainesville finishes 2003 as the fastest growing office in all of IOA.

Leadership Hall's Education Program began at Lakeview Academy with comments and a tour led by Head of School, Dr. John Kennedy. At Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy the class heard from principal, Dr. Matt Maynor, and Gainesville City Schools superintendent, Dr. Merrianne Dyer. After lunch at Lanier Charter Career Academy, the class toured the academy and the newest addition, Reflections Salon and Day Spa. The group traveled to the Academy of Discovery which houses the World Language Academy’s Intermediate Campus and The DaVinci Academy. At the DaVinci Academy members of the class toured student operated museums including the Phun with Physics exhibit. At WLA the class observed students in the culinary program and in class rooms speaking Spanish and English and Mandarin Chinese. Wisdom Project wraps up first session

VISION 2030

In August 2012, the Greater Hall Chamber and Brenau University’s Center for Lifetime Study kicked off VISION 2030’s new senior leadership program – The Wisdom Project – a leadership program designed for age 55+ members of the community. The Wisdom Project is one of VISION 2030’s 15 Big Ideas and prepares retired and semi-retired individuals to use their wisdom and talents in creative ways through action and advocacy. Through a hands-on service project and interaction with like-minded individuals from throughout the community, The Wisdom Project participants experience a dynamic, multi-faceted view of Gainesville and Hall County, explore local issues and opportunities and engage with community leaders.

Sessions are held in both the fall and spring. "As a semi-retired business woman, I have been looking for ways to contribute my skills and talents to Hall County in a meaningful way," said fall 2012 class member Erika Walker. "As a participant in the Wisdom Project, I have been introduced to great Hall County resources and wonderful opportunities while developing deep seeded relationships with other community professionals like myself."

The Senior Leadership Committee is co-chaired by Bill Sanders, Jackson EMC, and Melissa Tymchuk, Northeast Georgia Health System. Nominations are now being accepted for The Wisdom Project Spring 2013 Session, that begins February 2013.

"I began working at the age of 15 and since college, spent 44 years in the electric industry," said Bill Sanders, co-chair, The Wisdom Project. "While planning my retirement, I have worried about what to do with my time. I joined the Wisdom Project to learn about options available in our community to use my experience, knowledge and contacts to keep from boredom in retirement. The Wisdom Project is a great way to bond with others either retired or planning retirement, to join the Wisdom Keepers Council and stay a productive member of this community through volunteerism.
