2019-2020: A Year Like No Other At the beginning of my term as 2019-2020 Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors, I enthusically announced that THIS year would be like NO OTHER in the HISTORY of the Greater Hall Chamber. Well, little did I know that this stateBrian Rochester ment would prove true in so Rochester & Associates many, many ways! With the Chairman, Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce COVID-19 pandemic, we've certainly made "history" in the way we all do business, they way the Chamber operates, and generally, the way we live our lives.

For the last 111 years, the Chamber has conducted an annual meeting with lots of hoopla, passing of the gavel, change of leadership, business recognition and such. We originally planned this year's annual meeting for May 2020. Then, we rescheduled to September. Now, I'm truly pleased to announce that the 112th Annual Meeting & Gala will be presented virtually. The Gala Celebration & Awards Premier will launch on Thursday, October 8th via YouTube both at 12 Noon and 7pm on the Chamber’s website and include the presentation of Annual Business Awards as well as highlights of the year's successes.

Protecting the health and wellness of our Chamber members and the community is of utmost importance, so we decided to go to a virtual format. The Chamber

Bitzer's Mike Zeiler dedicated to students

Community businesses and work-based learning programs partner to provide career opportunities for local students.

Gainesville High School Sophomore Carlos Mendoza completed the Engineering Pathway, one of the state's Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) pathways under Ed Nemec, GHS Engineering Drafting & Design Instructor.

In spring 2020, Carlos passed the Gainesville High School Senior Carlos Mendoza attends classes at Lanier End of Pathway Technical College and works as a paid intern at a local industry.

Assessment, earning the Auto Desk Inventor certification (a very difficult test), and as a junior became a Work-Based Learning (WBL) Youth Apprenticeship student. With an interest in engineering and under the guidance of Helen Perry, a Gainesville High WBL Coordinator, and Wendy Savitz, GHS Dual Enrollment Coordinator, Carlos was referred to Shelley Davis of Workforce Strategies Group for a recommendation on furthering his education and career options. 17-year-old Carlos Mendoza joined a local industry as a paid intern in February and took drafting classes at Lanier Technical College. Now, as a senior, Carlos is in his 2nd Drafting DE class and continues to work as an intern. He loves his job and hopes to continue his studies at Lanier Technical College after graduation.

The Georgia Department of Education Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) program is preparing Georgia's students for their next step after high school – college, beginning a career, registered apprenticeships, or the military. Georgia CTAE pathway course offerings, and the new Educating Georgia's Future Workforce initiative, leverage partnerships with industry and higher education to ensure students have the skills they need to thrive in the future workforce. Zeiler and the Bitzer team continue to help educate young adults about the engineering industry and career paths available in our community.

Gainesville Renaissance Groundbreaking on the Square in Downtown Gainesville.

Gainesville Renaissance will bring educational, retail and residential space to the Downtown Gainesville Square. The three-story project will have six spaces on the first floor, with two reserved for restaurants. Developer Fred Roddy said he hopes to recruit a variety of tenants for the space. The second floor will house Brenau University’s Lynn J. Darby School of Psychology and Adolescent Counseling. On the third floor are eight condominiums. A small park will run between Renaissance and the Hall County Courthouse, connecting to Roosevelt Square. An art gallery on the first floor will be another partnership with Brenau.

Girl Scouts was founded in Savannah, Georgia over 100 years ago by Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low. She organized the very first Girl Scout troop, and every year since, her vision and legacy remain focused on building girls of courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place.

New Vision 2030 Public Art Installation Hall County Government, in conjunction with the Greater Hall Chamber Vision 2030 Public Art Committee, has expanded public art in public places across our community. The latest collaboration is a trio of 'bottle trees' alongside the Highlands to Islands Trail near the entrance to the Chicopee Mill Village area. The trunk and branches of the bottle trees were created by students in the welding class at North Hall High School. The various empty bottles which compose the trees' "leaves" were collected by employees within Hall County's Resource Recovery Division and were installed by inmate crews from the Hall County Correctional Institute.

"Seeing how all of these various groups came together to make this piece of art available to the masses really speaks to the type of community we have here in Hall County," Vision 2030 Public Art Chair Frank Norton, Jr. said. "Public art has really become a collaborative effort between artists, the private sector and government. It's this type of partnership that has made public art an integral component of the Hall County community." The Highlands to Islands Trail is a planned 15-mile looped trail system that will ultimately connect the Downtown Gainesville Square and Rock Creek Greenway to the University of North Georgia's Gainesville Campus.
