Strong and Growing Healthcare Industry As the Chamber continues to reinforce the message to “Be better tomorrow than you are today,” those words take on many meanings when we think about health care.

Yes, there’s the literal meaning of needing to physically heal from injury or illness or improve our health status through exercise and healthy eating, but that phrase can also apply to the economic health of our community as a whole, which is fueled by a strong and growing healthcare industry.

I am fortunate to lead our region’s largest employer, Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS), which has a $1.75 billion economic impact on our local and state economies. In addition to the responsibility of Carol Burrell caring for our community’s most vulnerable, which costs our system about President & CEO, $52 million in uncompensated care each year, we also help ensure the Northeast Georgia Health System; Chair, Greater Hall paychecks of not only our almost 9,000 employees but also the additional 18,000 jobs that are created by the “ripple effect” of our economic activity.

Chamber of Commerce This accountability to our community means that we must work diligently to remain financially strong, something that was recently confirmed by the S&P and Fitch credit agencies who affirmed our “A” ratings, placing NGHS among top performing non-profit hospitals and health systems in the U.S. Of course, that number of jobs (and growing!) to meet our healthcare demand requires a skilled workforce, so we are fortunate to have such robust healthcare training programs at Brenau University, Lanier Technical College and the University of North Georgia.

Having a strong, locally-governed health system also helps maintain a strong physician workforce, which leads to more jobs and better care for our community. Hall County is home to three of the state’s top 25 largest physician group practices, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle: Longstreet Clinic, Northeast Georgia Diagnostic Clinic and Northeast Georgia Physicians Group.

Other large groups – including Specialty Clinics of Georgia, The Heart Center of Northeast Georgia Medical System and dozens more – also create tremendous opportunities for stable, high-paying jobs. A 2017 study by the Greater Hall Chamber indicates Hall County is served by 338 healthcare service providers that employ nearly 12,600, or 15.4%, of the Hall County workforce, producing approximately $575 million in annual wages. Almost 80% of those jobs are located in the region’s healthcare epicenter in the city of Gainesville.

Northeast Georgia Health System is also building another program that will have a tremendous impact on both the health of the local community and its economy – Graduate Medical Education (GME). Our first class of resident physicians will arrive in July 2019, and their impact will extend beyond caring for people in the hospital and community clinics. These resident physicians will buy homes, shop locally and raise families. They may become your neighbor! Our goal is to keep the best and brightest right here in Gainesville-Hall County. According to research from the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute, the GME program will create some 300 additional jobs and generate a local economic impact of $66 million by 2023. GME will also create an additional $18 million in local economic impact each year after.

Our community is blessed to have a strong healthcare system, and I am equally proud of how this healthcare community truly cares for our local residents. I applaud Longstreet Clinic for again providing free community health screenings at our upcoming HealthSmart Expo on Wednesday, October 17 at the Gainesville Civic Center. Sponsored by CIGNA, the Expo also features free wellness seminars that will be provided by 2 Dog restaurant owners Tina and Tim Roberts and fitness expert Holli Lee. And, you don’t want to miss Dallas Gay at the HealthSmart Breakfast (also October 17 at 7:30 a.m. at the Gainesville Civic Center and sponsored by Alliant Health Plans and Jackson EMC). Dallas is a true hero and has worked tirelessly to ensure our community and state is better equipped to fight the overwhelming opioid epidemic. The HealthSmart Expo itself is the product of the Chamber’s Healthcare Committee, created out of Vision 2030, which is working toward the Big Idea our community envisioned to become the healthiest community in Georgia. Dallas will touch on the local, state and national scope of the opioid epidemic and what we are doing locally to address the tide of destruction caused by drug addiction. The Chamber's Annual Most Fit Company Awards will be presented at the breakfast.

U.S. Brings in Most Medals The Local Organizing Committee for the 2018 ICF Dragon Boat World Championship reports a successful, international event hosting over 1,000 athletes and support staff from 11 countries at the first ICF Dragon Boat World Championship in the Americas. The competition was September 13-16, and visitors from around the world received our unprecedented Southern Hospitality and boosted our economy by an estimated $3 million, filling hotels, retail stores and restaurants across Gainesville-Hall County. Led by many local athletes associated with the Lake Lanier Canoe/Kayak Club, the United States brought in the most medals with a total of 24. To celebrate the conclusion of the "Grand Reveal" on October 19, an inaugural event – Mark Wills Concert – will take place in the new Lanier Tech Amphitheater.
