Economic Impact of Tourism

Tourism is big business in Gainesville-Hall County and has contributed greatly to the area’s economic growth. At the center of our tourism industry is Lake Sidney Lanier, a 38,000 acre recreational lake that attracts some 10 million visitors annually. It’s the most popular U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake in the nation and boasts a $5 billion annual economic impact on the area. The economic impact of Gainesville-Hall County’s tourism industry reached a record high of $314 million, according a report released in 2017 by the Georgia Department of Economic Development and U. S. Travel Association.

Lake Lanier Olympic Park had an area impact of $4.6 million for the 12 months ending June 2017. With a big boost from international events, such as the Pan Am Championships for flatwater canoe and kayak. The Carol Burrell President & CEO, upcoming ICF Dragon Boat World Championships is expected to generate Northeast Georgia Health over $4 million in 2018 by this venue alone. Venue officials have led the System; Chair, Greater Hall way for numerous renovations at the site, which played host to flatwater Chamber of Commerce canoe/kayak and rowing events for the 1996 Olympics. Adding to economic impact numbers is use of the venue for events such as Friday Night Food Trucks (3rd Friday of the month) corporate functions, weddings, concerts and other events.

We are grateful to be strategically located in one of the top tourism regions in the state. Hall County’s tourism economy continues to see annual growth and is ranked 12th out of Georgia’s 159 counties with annual visitor spending surpassing the $300 million mark according to U.S. Travel.

Gainesville-Hall County is host to dozens of public parks and venues. The Linwood Nature Preserve, expansion of the multi-use Highlands to Islands Trail compliment the City of Gainesville's momentum, as well as Atlanta Botanical Garden, Gainesville, a 168-acre preserve that opened in spring 2015. The $20 million project includes vast gardens, a visitor’s center, amphitheater and pavilions. The 1,500 Don Carter State Park opened in July 2013 in North Hall County, and a second development phase was recently completed offering over 12 miles of horse trails, hiking trails, a visitor’s center, cabins, RV and camp sites, boat ramps, and a beach area/amenities on the shores of Lake Lanier. The 1,100 acre Margaritaville at Lanier Islands kicks in a huge impact on our economy and transports guests to a lakeside paradise and family-friendly fun with a wide range of entertainment including the Water Park, boating and water sports, Georgia’s only inland beach, weekend events with live performances, world-class golf and quality meeting and conference accommodations. Road Atlanta and its 2.54-mile International Grand Prix course attracts 320,000 visitors annually and hosts the 21st Annual Motul Petit Le Mans (October 10-13) drawing over 150,000 visitors to Hall County for this event. Recently renovated Chateau Elan Winery & Resort attracts some 500,000 guests annually and offers fine wines, international cuisine, championship golf course and a luxurious hotel and spa.

Lake Lanier Olympic Park officials prepare to host the largest international sporting event in the area since the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games with the ICF Dragon Boat World Championships (September 13-16). Over 1,500 athletes from 20 countries and 10,000 spectators are expected, and VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED! Your help will ensure the hosting of a great event and prove we are still the Hospitality Capital of the World!

Festivities kick off with Opening Ceremonies on Wednesday, September 12 at 6pm at Lake Lanier Olympic Park with live music (Elton John Tribute starring Craig A. Meyer) food trucks and TapIt on hand for craft beer and wine for purchase. Free admission. The Closing Party is Sunday, September 16 at 7pm at The Arts Council Smithgall Arts Center with live music (Departure Journey Tribute Band) and BBQ from Johnny's. Tickets, $20. Opioid Epidemic: Our Community in Crisis

The HealthSmart Breakfast on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30 am at the Gainesville Civic Center will feature keynote speaker Dallas Gay, a Gainesville businessman, philanthropist and activist working to combat opioid abuse in our community and the state. Dallas will touch on the local, state and national scope of the opioid epidemic and what we are doing locally to address the tide of destruction caused by drug addiction. He is one of the primary architects of the Medical Association of Georgia Foundation’s ‘Think About It’ campaign to reduce prescription drug abuse and secured funding for ‘Project DAN’ (Deaths Avoided by Naloxone), Dallas Gay providing thousands of doses of Naloxone for first responders. He has spent an enormous amount of time and personal resources to combat the drug abuse epidemic in Georgia, making a great impact on our community and others in the state. Gay is the chairman of the board of Protein Products in Gainesville.
