I am honored to serve as the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce’s new Chairman of the Board and am excited to work with each of you to support our local business community. As we continue to navigate challenges posed by the national economy and the changing local economic landscape, our Chamber plays a critical role in promoting business development, networking and advocacy. I am committed to supporting local businesses – our Chamber members – and driving economic growth. It's by uniting and working together that we can continue our legacy to promote a thriving business community that benefits all.

Recently, I read a book by Georgia author Jeff Henderson. Jeff’s book is titled, "Know What You’re FOR." The book provides a growth strategy for work and an even better strategy for life. Jeff writes that being FOR people is a great way to build success. He notes that everything that we do as leaders in business or in the community is about people and FOR people. Success comes when you build an organization around who you’re FOR, and our Chamber is FOR YOU and Business! Our Chamber leadership has always followed this principle. Since its founding in 1903, the Greater Hall Chamber's mission has been to "improve the overall business climate for member growth."

I look forward to working closely with the Chamber’s board of directors and staff to develop and implement strategies that promote our shared goals. There are exciting opportunities ahead, and I am confident that with your support, we can achieve great things. Get involved in the Chamber’s activities and share your ideas and perspectives.

Continuing the Chamber's legacy of attracting new business to the area, assisting existing industry with expansions and workforce development, strengthening international business and supporting small business growth is our goal.

Our dynamic location, overall diversity, strong business leadership and outstanding government partners continue to make Gainesville-Hall County well positioned for quality growth in the years to come. I am hopeful to play just a small role to help take us to the next level and contribute like so many before... to continue to make Gainesville-Hall County the best place in the Georgia to live, work, play and stay.

About Chamber Chairman Brett Fowler Brett Fowler, partner and executive vice president of employee benefits at Turner Wood & Smith Insurance, officially took over as Chairman of the Board on July 1, 2023. Brett served as Chamber Vice Chair of Membership Development for several terms, serves on the Gainesville Redevelopment Authority, and co-chaired the HALLmark 2020-25 initiative. He is a graduate of Leadership Hall County and the Leadership Georgia Class of 2022. Brett has served on many civic and nonprofit boards and committees including the Gainesville Jaycees (past president), United Way of Hall County (past campaign chair) and the Georgia Mountain Food Bank (past chair). Brett has been honored with many awards of distinction including Georgia Trend magazine's 40 Under 40, the Gus Whalen Young Philanthropist Award, and Gainesville Jaycees Young Man of the Year.

Locally owned New Leaf Landscape Services was founded in 1989 by Steve Murray with 10 employees. Today, with offices in Gainesville and Lawrenceville, the company has grown to 95 employees during busy summer months. New Leaf has evolved into a full-service landscape design, installation, maintenance, and irrigation company and has been honored by the Urban Ag Council and other organizations with many awards over the years. The company's successful mentorship program helps team members deal with finances, continuing education, career paths and more. Hawkins Family Dental

After graduating from Emory Dental School, Gainesville native Dr. Lee Hawkins returned to his hometown to start a practice in 1978. His first hire was Christy Sexton, who is still with the practice after 44 years! Three other staff members – Joann Fuller, Karen Ditmore and Tracy Tuggle were hired shortly thereafter, and are also still with the practice.

Starting a business with a 21% interest rate proved challenging but did not curve his ambition to provide top quality dental care to our community. He supplemented his income by teaching anatomy and physiology at the Brenau Nursing School. He began volunteering at the Good News Clinic the first year it opened and became involved with the Georgia Dental Association, serving as president in 2003. In 2006, Lee’s son Dr. Ben Hawkins graduated from the Medical College of Georgia’s Dental School and joined the practice. That year, Lee went to the Georgia Senate, where he continued in the House of Representatives, now serving as chairman of the Health Committee. WG Mealor Chairman's Choice Award

Tread Syfan | Stewart Melvin & Frost

Tread Syfan (left) received the WG Mealor Chairman's Choice Award from 2022-2023 Chamber Chairman William Bagwell.

Named for W.G. Mealor who served as the Chamber's first chairman (1908-1917), the award is presented to a Chamber volunteer who has gone “beyond the call of duty.” Tread is an attorney with Stewart, Melvin and Frost, specializing in municipal bond law, securities law, commercial real estate matters and commercial lending. A past Chamber Chairman, Tread serves as General Counsel and Secretary for the Gainesville and Hall County Development Authority and has been involved in economic development for the last 40 years. He has been instrumental in the creation of industrial parks as well as the recruitment of companies who hire local people and pay the taxes that support our community. Over to the past 15 years, the Economic Development Council and the Gainesville/ Hall County Development Authority have worked with 323 new and expanded companies, creating 15,800 additional jobs with $3.7 billion in capital investment.

Distinguished Citizen Award

Brian Daniel | Carroll Daniel Construction Brian Daniel, recipient of the Distinguished Citizen Award, is President & CEO of Carroll Daniel Construction, a Gainesville-based general contracting firm with 300 employees. Brian has made a deep impact locally and in the state with his commitment to workforce development. He is a past Chamber Chairman and participated in Chamber business missions to Japan and Germany to call on Hall County’s existing industries at their corporate headquarters. Following a Brian Daniel with son, Stuart, and mother Carole Ann Daniel. mission to Germany, Carroll Daniel Construction implemented an apprenticeship program to grow promising high school graduates into full-fledged construction project managers. Brian led efforts to develop the Gainesville-Hall County Workforce Development Task Force, installing youth apprenticeships and expanded Work-Based Learning programs throughout our community.

Renee Sweeney | Notary Pros The Greater Hall Chamber Ambassador of the Year is Renee Sweeney of Notary Pros. Renee was selected by her peers – fellow Ambassadors – for the award. Chamber Ambassadors participate in ribbon cuttings, Business After Hours and various Chamber projects. The group meets monthly and helps develops strategies and activities for member retention.

Over the last several years, Renee has become "The Face of the Ambassadors" and frequently volunteers at Chamber’s events. She's known as the most hands-on, involved Ambassador. Thank you, Renee, for your continued support, involvement and representing the Chamber so well!

Linda Sloyer's home garden at 420 Oakland Drive in Gainesville is a continuous work of over 20 years and consists of numerous paths that curl in and out of woods and through grassy areas, several seating areas, two ponds and a fireplace pit. "I was always a gardener," said Linda, "but when I completed my Master Gardener Certification with the Hall County Master Gardeners in 2015, I became a legitimate gardener!" Linda and two other Master Gardeners have taught a Youth Gardening Program for 5th graders at Riverbend Elementary for six years and notes the importantance of teaching young people the value of working with the earth and plant world. Students now have gardens in the back of Riverbend with flowers, vegetables, strawberries, blueberry bushes and figs. Expansion underway at NGMC Braselton Northeast Georgia Health System recently celebrated the coming expansion of Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton with a groundbreaking. The project's first phase is expected to be completed in summer 2025, and the second phase completed in 2026 with the total estimated cost at some $565 million. The project includes 235,000 square feet of new clinical space and 150 licensed acute care beds – bringing the hospital’s total licensed bed count to 284. Area Director, UGA Small Business Development Center Join Patrick Fulbright of the UGA SBDC for this seminar to define and explain what the Employer Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) is and what businesses qualify. There is an approaching deadline for the filing for the tax credit. The ERTC was created in March 2020 in Coronavirus Aid, Relief, & Econ Sec Act (CAREs Act). Employers should take advantage (if they qualify) as a fully maxed for 2020 and 2021, the credit could equal up to $26,000 per employee in total! The SBDC and possible guest speakers from Carr, Riggs and Ingram will discuss eligible employers and the way to qualify. Celebrating a Year of Success In 2022, 15 new and expanding firms added 1,400 new jobs and $700 million in capital investment to Gainesville-Hall County. Since 2015, 149 new and expanding businesses announced 8,400 jobs and $2.4 billion in new capital investment. Kubota Manufacturing of America was one of many existing industries expanding and will add a new $140 million manufacturing facility at the company’s campus in Gainesville bringing the company’s total employment to more than 2,500. King’s Hawaiian will invest more than $85 million to expand its Oakwood facility.

Participation in the Chamber’s Small Business programs continues to grow with 900 total seminar participants and 30 small businesses earning “Certified Small Business Partner” designation. The South Hall Business Coalition continues to focus on issues of importance to South Hall.

Last fall, 75 employers participated with onsite hiring at the Chamber’s Job Fair & Career Expo. The Fall 2023 Job Fair is Thursday, September 14 (10am-2pm) at the Gainesville Civic Center and will feature dozens of local companies that are hiring. Chamber healthcare and wellness programs are making an impact with projects like the HealthSmart Expo, Healthy Hall Awards and the Chamber Chase 5K that hosted over 1,100 in March at Riverside Preparatory Academy.

The 2023 HealthSmart Wellness Expo is Wednesday, October 4 (7:30am- 1:30pm) at Lanier Technical College Ramsey Conference Center.

The Workforce Development Task Force, now in its seventh year, reached a new milestone this year with 800 Work-Based Learning students working at some 30 area industries. Youth Apprenticeship programs for high school students continue to grow and combine academic and technical classroom instruction with work experience.

VISION 2030’s Public Art program has cataloged and installed over 200 art pieces throughout the community. The initiative’s involvement in the Highlands to Islands Trail has been key in uniting greenways into one multi-use trail system.

Celebrating a Year of Success Healthy Hall Awards of Excellence recognize those in the healthcare industry in making a significant impact on our quality of life through excellence in health and wellness. 7th Grade Career Path Fairs are held annually and are a collaborative initiative of the Chamber, Brenau University, the University of North Georgia and Lanier Technical College. In March, 2,700 middle school students participated and learned of career opportunities in Gainesville-Hall County.

Youth Leadership Hall toured King's Hawaiian as part of its Economic Development and Industry Program. The 2022-2023 class consisted of 80 students selected from 12 private and public Hall County high schools. Over 1,200 students have now graduated from the program that builds individual leadership skills, fosters positive group dynamics and seeks to increase civic and community involvement.

The 41st Class of Leadership Hall County (LHC) graduated in June with a celebration rooftop at Carroll Daniel Construction. 1,023 men and women have graduated from LHC since its founding in 1982 and taken their place as leaders in the community.

Some 450 people attended the Chamber’s Annual Eggs & Issues Breakfast in December 2022 featuring the newly elected Hall County Legislative Delegation.

Business After Hours is a popular networking event sponsored by a Chamber member.
