Community fun at Chamber Chase 5K The Greater Hall Chamber's 6th Annual Chamber Chase 5K gathered the support of over 2,000 people and targeted organizations committed to employee health and wellness. Runners and walkers of all ages – from middle school students to senior citizens – participated in the 5K Run and the 2 Mile Wellness Walk and celebrated afterwards at Hall County’s Largest Office Party with awards and recognition. The Title Sponsor for the event was Medical Mutual. The Chamber Chase is a VISION 2030 Initiative. See page 15 for highlights, race medalists and team award recipients.

The Importance of Volunteerism The Greater Hall Chamber's Annual Meeting & Gala is an opportunity to recognize many of our volunteers and members that have played a key role in the success of the Chamber and the community over the past year. At this event, the Small Business of the Year and Family Business of the Year will be recognized along with the W.G. Mealor Chairman's Award, Community Service Award and Silver Shovel Award recipients – individuals that have played a significant role in Chamber programs and have a positive impact on our community.

Chamber volunteers are very important and put in countless hours to make your Chamber and community a success. Examples include the Ambassadors Council – a group of dedicated volunteers that attend many networking events, ribbon cuttings, and other programs to welcome new members and also to learn more about the needs of our Randall Frost members.

Our Youth Leadership Hall and Leadership Hall County adStewart, Melvin & Frost 2012-2013 Chairman, Greater Hall visory committees are additional groups of volunteers that spend many Chamber of Commerce hours organizing programs that are a critical part of the success of each of these educational programs. (See the new Youth Leadership Hall Class on page 14). Membership volunteers help organize events such as the recently successful Hackers Holiday Golf Tournament, the Chamber Chase 5K, Job Fair, Buy Local Expo and dozens of other functions.

One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community, and unpaid volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. However, volunteering is a two-way street, and it can benefit you as much as the cause you choose to help.

The Chamber has a number of rich and rewarding volunteer opportunities. You'll not only grow personally and professionally when you volunteer, you'll make new friends and business associates. In addition, networking is an incredible opportunity and benefit of volunteering. Find a committee that addresses your passion and sign up. If you are not a Chamber member, call Kara Tate, join now. Rotary Club of Gainesville celebrates 90 years of service The Rotary Club of Gainesville, founded in 1923, has more than 200 members and is a part of Rotary International – a volunteer organization of business and professional leaders with nearly 34,000 service clubs worldwide dedicated to humanitarian efforts. Rotary’s primary object is “service above self” through its work in the local community, the nation, and to the global community.

Rotary clubs address critical issues at home and abroad by providing health care and medical supplies, clean water, food, job training, youth development, and education to people in need. Rotary International’s 2012-2013 emphasis has been “Peace through Service.”

Superior Court Judge Bonnie Oliver has served as president of the Rotary Club of Gainesville for 2012-2013. The club was chartered in 1923 and celebrated 90 years of service this year.

“This Close” to eradicating polio “Polio-Plus” has been a major emphasis of Rotary International for decades. The Polio-Plus campaign was designed to eradicate polio in the world. Since its launch in 1985, reported cases have dropped from 350,000 to less than 2,000 cases a year. Today, only four countries in the world are still fighting polio, Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Gainesville Rotary Club donated $1,000 toward Polio Plus this past year.

Ted Turner, chairman of Turner Enterprises, Inc. and founder of CNN, created the United Nations Foundation in 1998 with his historic $1 billion gift in support of the United Nations. Since its creation, the United Nations Foundation has been a proud partner of Rotary International and an active participant in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. To date, the Foundation has delivered more than $230 million for polio eradication efforts.

Ramp projects help homebound citizens Club members gather on a regular basis to build ramps, and since the program’s start, the Rotary Club of Gainesville has built 59 ramps for community members.

Education and Literacy Support Because education is so important to our community’s well-being, the Rotary Club of Gainesville is committed to supporting area schools and students. Each month, the Rotary Club of Gainesville recognizes fifth-grade students who have distinguished themselves at their schools. The students are treated to a limousine ride from their schools to attend a club meeting with their parents and teachers. At the meeting they are presented with a certificate and small prizes and they learn about Rotary’s service mission.

Helping others around the world…

Eric Nyuma, an energetic and focused young Liberian, visited the Rotary Club of Gainesville in March during a trip to the United States as part of burgeoning relationship that resulted from a Rotary International grant to support a medical clinic in Liberia. Eric works for the Liberian Ministry of Finance and for the Liberia’s second lady, assisting her with efforts on behalf of the physically challenged.

Through his efforts and the Rotary International grant, Gainesville Rotarians Bill Lightfoot and Jane Hemmer, along with Marty and Randy Owens, and Dr. John Hemmer, traveled to Liberia to teach across various disciplines and build an incinerator, funded by the grant, for a medical clinic there.

“The people we encountered were proud and resilient, but after years of civil war they lack many basic necessities,” Jane Hemmer said.

To further support this humanitarian effort, the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, under the direction of Gainesville Rotarian LaDon Shaw, took up a challenge to provide dresses for girls in Liberia.

They were hugely successful in their effort, and made more than 1,300 much needed dresses from simple pillowcases.

The Wisdom Project’s Fall 2013 Session begins with a kick off on August 15 and will include seven (7) class sessions, concluding on November 22, 2013.

The Wisdom Project is a senior leadership program and part of the VISION 2030 Initiative developed and presented by the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce and Brenau University’s Center for Lifetime Study. The Wisdom Project is designed for age 55+ members of the community and seeks to encourage retired and semiretired individuals to use their wisdom and talents in creative ways through action and advocacy.

The Wisdom Project recently held a ceremony for its second class with 19 participants graduating from the Spring 2013 Session. The class participated in a series of interactive discussions with community leaders, explored local industries and organizations through on-site visits, learned about area challenges and opportunities and discovered new ways to engage in the community. They will now put their new knowledge to work by completing individual and group service projects.

Leadership Hall County The Leadership Hall County Class of 2013 completed their last program at Gainesville Bowling Center! The group had fun bowling and participating in a laser tag competition. After the fun activities, members of the class gathered at Mellow Mushroom for social time and networking together.

The group talked about the year and how much the program has meant to them both personally and professionally. Good luck class of 2013! It’s been a great year!

The Chamber initiated Youth Leadership Hall (YLH) in 2005. The program is designed for high school juniors and seniors and enables students to develop leadership skills while increasing awareness of the community. The YLH program seeks to provide an investment in the community’s future leadership by fostering interest in the community and inspiring students to become the leaders of tomorrow. Congratulations to the 2013-2014 Class.

Riverside Military Academy won the Fastest Community Team Award. Many thanks to Riverside Military Academy for hosting the Chamber Chase 5K and their ongoing support of the Greater Hall Chamber and the community.
