Transportation Forum Thursday, March 12 at 11:30 a.m.

The Chamber's Annual Transportation Forum is Thursday, March 12 at the University of North Georgia, Gainesville Campus, Continuing Education Auditorium, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The lunch forum is open to the public and creates discussion with transportation officials, Chamber members, business professionals and community leaders.

Speakers will include officials from the Georgia Department of Transportation as well as representatives from the Gainesville-Hall County Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Georgia Small Business Week February 16 – February 20, 2015 Governor Nathan Deal has proclaimed February 16-20, 2015 Georgia Small Business Week. The Greater Hall Chamber recognizes the impact of small business by hosting monthly Small Business Seminars, ongoing marketing workshops, awards and recognition, insurance and healthcare educational forums, and more. With over 85% of Chamber members being small businesses, the Greater Hall Chamber and the Georgia Chamber partnered to form the Small Business Alliance in 2014. Businesses (10 or less employees) can register for the program that provides a grassroots initiative to increase the collective voice and awareness of the small business community at the Georgia Capitol. The free member benefit provides updates on legislation that affects small businesses and offers discounted entry to Georgia Chamber events.

"Small Business represents the heart of the economy and a dominant source of job creation," said Chamber Vice Chair of Economic Development Brian Rochester of Rochester & Associates. Small Business, Our Economic Lifeblood Governor Nathan Deal will proclaim the third week in February 2015 (February 16-20) as GEORGIA SMALL BUSINESS WEEK. Kicking off the week will be the Small Business Rock Stars awards luncheon jointly hosted by the Department of Economic Development and the Georgia Economic Developers Association. Many small business support activities will take place throughout the state. The Greater Hall Chamber will spotlight our valuable small business members this week as we do all year through programs such as the monthly Small Business Seminars and marketing workshops, weekly networking events, monthly Small Business Awards and the Buy Local Expo on February 5.

Since 1995, small businesses have generated 64% of new jobs, and paid 44 percent of the total United States private payroll, according to the Small Business Administration. Small businesses contribute to local economies by bringing growth and innovation to the community and David Lee Jackson EMC tend to attract talent who invent new products and services. While many believe that larger firms are the most important factor when it comes to driving economic growth, small businesses contribute more than their fair share.

According to the Georgia Department of Labor, 280,189 business establishments represented Georgia employment in the first quarter of 2014. Of those: 99% of Georgia companies employ under 500 people. Approximately 95% employ under 100, and nearly 80% under 10 employees. These numbers confirm that small business is our economic lifeblood. Small businesses reflect Georgia’s entrepreneurial spirit and fuel job growth, as well as personal pride. These small businesses – local florist, jeweler or an independent community drug store – are an important source of employment and economic activity and serve as the foundation of the community.

Gainesville-Hall County 2015 Economic Development Highlights

POPULATION & HOUSING • Gainesville-Hall County’s population grew by 1.3% per year from 2012 – 2014.

• The 2015 estimated population of Gainesville-Hall County is 192,658.

• In 2014, the U.S. Census Bureau identified the Gainesville-Hall County MSA as one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States.

• In 2014, Gainesville processed 265 single-family home permits, the highest annual total in the City’s history.

• Gainesville-Hall County's 2014 average single-family home sale price was $218,211.

RETAIL • Recent census data indicates Gainesville-Hall County has a primary trade area serving a population of over 462,000 Northeast Georgia residents.

• Kroger Marketplace, a 125,000-square-foot grocery, retail and restaurant store, opened in March 2014 and is the largest Kroger of its kind in the Southeast.

• Highway 53 continues to be a successful retail corridor with over a million square feet of retail space with further development of Beechwood Crossing in 2015, creating an addition of more than 250,000 square feet.

• Two new Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market stores opened in January 2015 on Thompson Bridge Road and Browns Bridge Road.

• The new Thurmon Tanner Parkway extension is generating retail interest in South Hall along with the successful 500,000-square-foot Stonebridge Village Center on Spout Springs Road in Flowery Branch.

BUSINESS • 24 new and expanded businesses announced 1,300 new jobs in 2014 and committed $150 million in capital investment including King’s Hawaiian, Big Creek Foods, Tatsumi, Elringklinger and Innobots.

• Kubota is developing a new 180-acre campus on Highway 365 in Gateway Industrial Centre with a $100 million investment and 650 jobs.

• Jinsung TEC of South Korea opened their new North American headquarters and operations in Oakwood South Industrial Park.

• The Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network opened a new science laboratory and headquarters in January 2015 at the new Gateway Industrial Centre.

• Procare Rx opened a 43,000-square-foot headquarters and operations center and is a leading pharmacy benefits management company that employs 160.

• Hall County’s Food and Agribusiness sector has the highest county economic impact in Georgia, with over $5 billion in economic output and 17,642 direct jobs.

• Lanier Tech's Business Incubator has launched 18 businesses with 12 more start-ups now in development.

• Rotating Engineered Products, Inc. will open its new headquarters and production center on a 10-acre site at Gainesville Industrial Park West.

• Gainesville’s Georgia Chair Company celebrated 100 years of business in 2014 by announcing an expansion of business and an expanded export market.

REDEVELOPMENT • Downtown/Midtown Gainesville is being redeveloped with the help of a TAD (Tax Allocation District) and an Opportunity Zone.

• A second phase of the Midtown Greenway is planned to connect Downtown Gainesville and Rock Creek Greenway closer to the Central Hall Trail and the University of North Georgia Gainesville Campus and Elachee Nature Science Center.

King's Hawaiian officials signed an agreement with Georgia's Quick Start program.

The bakery in Flowery Branch is expanding production and adding 400 new jobs in 2015 for a total of 600 employees.

Governor Deal recently dedicated the new Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network facility in Hall County’s Gateway Industrial Centre. The new $13 million facility employs 50 highly skilled veterinary scientists and lab technicians that are crucial to fulfilling the lab’s mission of healthy poultry for Georgia.

• The cities of Flowery Branch and Oakwood are redeveloping their downtown areas with Tax Allocation District designations.

• Brenau University opened its Center for Graduate School programs in Downtown Gainesville and anticipates that 700 master’s and doctoral students to be enrolled.

INFRASTRUCTURE • Sewer for Highway 365 North is under development with funding support from the infrastructure Special Purpose Local Option/Sales Tax (SPLOST).

• The City of Gainesville and Hall County are working together to develop Cedar Creek and Glades water reservoirs.

• In March 2015, voters will consider the SPLOST VII to invest a projected $158 million for road improvements, water and sewer, building construction, public safety, library renovations and other municipal projects.

• Lake Lanier, a 38,000-acre reservoir, provides drinking water for 60% of Georgians and recreation for 7.5 million visitors annually.

EDUCATION • Business leaders and educators are developing a major workforce development initiative.

• Brenau University, University of North Georgia (UNG) and Lanier Technical College enroll over 16,700 students.

• Lanier Technical College was named Georgia’s Technical College of the Year for 2014.

• In spring 2016, UNG will expand its nursing program to the Gainesville Campus.

• Over 35,000 students are enrolled in Hall County and Gainesville City School Systems.

• There are 11 private schools in Gainesville-Hall County, including Lakeview Academy, Riverside Military Academy and North Georgia Christian School.

• Brenau awarded it first doctorates in Nursing and in Occupational Therapy in 2014.

HEALTHCARE • Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville has ranked as Georgia’s top heart hospital for 10 consecutive years and #1 in Overall Care by CareChex.

• The 100-bed Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton will open in spring 2015.

• 65 new physicians joined the staff at NGMC in 2014 for a total of some 600 physicians • The Longstreet Clinic, Northeast Georgia Physicians Group and Northeast Georgia Diagnostic Clinic continue to add new physicians and services TOURISM • The Lake Lanier Olympic Venue will host the 2016 Pan-Am Championships for Canoe Kayak and the Continental Olympic Qualifier for the Americas.

• Atlanta Botanical Garden Gainesville is a 168-acre preserve to open in spring 2015.

• Don Carter State Park is the first state park in Hall County with cabins, RV and camp sites, boat ramps, a beach area, trails and over 1,500 acres on the shores of Lake Lanier.

• Lanier Islands, South Hall's world-class 1,500-acre resort received the Southern Living Hotel Collection distinction and a 2014 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence.

• Road Atlanta's International Grand Prix course attracts 320,000 visitors annually.

• Interactive Neighborhood for Kids (INK) will develop a new, 50,000-square-foot hands-on children’s museum in South Hall County.

Since 1983, the Chamber's Leadership Hall County program has provided a learning experience for existing and emerging leaders of the Greater Hall area. A cross-section of individuals (25 and older) develop an understanding of Gainesville and Hall County through a series of one-day sessions, August to April. Topics covered include quality of life, education, health and social services, city and state governments, judicial, and economic development. Tuition for each participant is $800 for Chamber members and $970 for non-Chamber members, which includes a one-year Chamber individual membership. Each participant is responsible for paying his/her own tuition. Fees are used to cover materials, monthly program expenses, an annual retreat, graduation reception and more. A commitment of 100% attendance is required from each participant. Individuals must be nominated for the program by March 15, 2015. Nominees complete a detailed application which are reviewed by a selection committee, and final participants are then selected.
