Traditions of Braselton Monthly Update

SHEILA FEST 2020 Sheila Fest 2020 was a huge success and we will be excited to announce our final donation soon! We are still working on a few post events details and final accounting for the event, but I think it is safe to say that we will be exceeding our initial goal of doubling last year’s donation amount of $10,100! We would like to thank everyone that helped to organize and volunteered during the event and hope that everyone had a great time. But most of all we are so thankful that the proceeds of the event will touch so many people’s lives through iServe Ministries.

FITNESS CENTER You may have noticed that the lateral pull down machine has not been repaired yet. We did have to special order the part for that and it we expect it to be fixed by the end of this week.

• When making reservation for the Fitness Center please be mindful that this is a new system.

• We need at least 24-hour in advance notice to ensure that your key card is activated. Jennifer programs the amenity key cards for the following day around 9 pm each night.

• If you made your reservation the day before and have an issue with your amenity access key card, please text Jennifer Giacin at 404-414-6806. If you have any other questions regarding registration, please email Jennifer Giacin at manager@traditionsofbraselton.org • Please be mindful of other residents in the community when making reservations for the Fitness Center. If you know that you will not be able to attend the Fitness Center at the time that you made your reservation, please cancel your reservation as soon as possible so that time can be available to other residents in the community.

CLUBHOUSE Since reopening, the clubhouse has been booked up for most weekends. If you have a date in mind that you would like to reserve the clubhouse, we encourage you not to delay in booking your time.

ONSITE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM Up and coming projects: • Stop sign replacements – there are many stop signs throughout the community that are faded and worn out that will be replaced; • Curb cleaning – we plan to start at the front of the neighborhood and work through the property; • Lay sod at the main pond; • Pressure wash (underway) perimeter fence and; • Re-painting traffic lines at the front entrance.

FINANCE Year to date, we have collected $878,322.83 towards 2020 dues which is 96% of the annual budget. Below is a summary of the total delinquency which shows collections progress. *The special assessment delinquent amount increased because the developer lots were assessed at the end of May. The charges did not automatically post due to the accounts being marked as no fee, so the charges were added manually.

Special assessment refunds are being processed and many of you should have already received your checks.

If you purchased or sold your home during from May 1st to September 25th, I am working hard on reviewing the settlement statements to ensure that the refunds are going to the right party. As I process your refund, I will email you and let you know the details. I do appreciate your patience during this undertaking.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

At the Community meeting on Monday, November 16th you will have the opportunity to meet the candidate(s) for the up and coming election for the open Board position. So far, we have two nominations and here is a little bit of information about them: Sam McGaughey- Bio I am originally from Cumming, GA and we moved to Traditions of Braselton in 2016. My wife is Shannon and we have 3 kids: Alli, Camryn, and Grayson.

We currently reside on Fairway Park Lane, just off number 11.

Our family is a member of the Golf and Country Club and actively involved in the neighborhood. Our children attend Gum Springs Elementary and West Jackson Middle school.

We attend and serve at 12 Stone Church in Braselton. I own and operate an insurance agency in Athens, GA and many of my neighbors are also clients. I care deeply about preserving the future of our neighborhood and believe it’s important to have appropriate and professional representation of the homeowners.

Built and moved in our home September 2005 Married to: Sherry Children: Two Married Daughters, Ashley and Anna Grandchildren: Hudson, Hadley, Harrison, Welles Currently Retired Worked 40 years in the Textile fabric and garment industry.

Developed and sold and applied textile processing chemicals across the US and worked Internationally from 1988. I was managing partner in two different textile chemical companies and was President of Seydel International in Pendergrass?

Managed agents in 30 different countries around the world and managed license partners in Barcelona Spain and Bangkok Thailand. Helped develop garment finishes for companies like Levi, Farah, Wrangler, Gap, Jones of New York.

Recently worked part time at Outdoor Environments until the pandemic hit. I am a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church and have been teaching Sunday School for close to 30 years. Also, I currently serve on the Grounds Committee for the Traditions of Braselton.

We moved to Traditions from Snellville. From the beginning the concept of living in a lifestyle designed community was very appealing. While the dream of a vibrant growing community took a few detours since 2005 we appear to be riding a dynamic growth wave. Through all the ups and down in the last 15 years the one constant that has persistently held the neighborhood together is the wonderful community of home owners. The folks of Traditions have an eye for excellence and a heart of gold and never have I seen us step back from a fight to maintain that excellent lifestyle we all moved here to have. Traditions is a community set apart like no other in any of the surrounding counties. I envision that with good long term strategic planning and continuing to work together everyday we will remain a community of growing excellence. An extraordinary place to live, to raise a family, to fellowship with neighbors and of course to play.

As we previously informed you there will be two sessions for this meeting due to COVID. We will be taking temperatures at the door and have masks and sanitizer available. We will require reservations and are limiting each session to 50 attendees. Historically we have not had more than this attend a meeting so do hope this will accommodate everyone that is interested in attending. The meeting will also be recorded so that those that cannot make it will have a chance to view at a later date.

NEWS FROM THE MANAGER GROUNDS The Grounds Committee would like to remind residents of the Golf Cart Policy for the neighborhood. All Golf Carts must be registered, and drivers must comply with the rules which can be found on our website: http://www. traditionsofbraselton.org/admin/documentmodule/ DocDisplay.aspx?q=ACJJ2yAvHRaRU%2bNcmC4OhPzeJ WvdXAk%2f4%2fgxDfvWayy2NS1QIYKrUrf9BNtgJIYm The most important things to remember are: • Drivers must be licensed; • Drivers must adhere to all traffic laws (speed limit, stop at stop signs, etc.)

• Drivers must yield to automobiles

ARB/CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS There are currently 63 homes under construction, of these there are 21 presales and 42 specs (23 of the specs have been sold). This is a lot of activity which naturally can cause some inconveniences for owners and your patience is appreciated while driving through the neighborhood and as construction is taking place near your homes. If you have an issue to report regarding construction in progress please email: arb@traditionsofbraselton.org; ARB management is very quick to respond and have issues corrected.

GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB There were no updates provided from the Golf and Country Club this month, but we do know that they had great success with their recent social membership drive, and we would like to thank everyone that took advantage of that offer! Be on the look out for more information from them regarding the timing of the renovations and up and coming events!

COVENANT ENFORCEMENT In the past 30 days there have been a total of 92 violations generated. Of these 45 violations have been cured/closed, 10 were pre-existing or escalated, 2 were re-opened and 34 were new. Please be respectful of your neighbors and do not leave your dogs outside to bark all day long; this can be very nerve racking.

noted during our last inspection: Please be mindful of the following: • Trashcans must be stored out of view from the street or neighboring properties; • Individual Yard/Garage Sales are not permitted. The Community hosts two community wide Yard Sales during the year. The next one will be in the Spring of 2021.

• Please submit a modification request for any changes to exterior of your home; • Please keep your property in a clean, well-kept manner (yard tools, debris etc. should be removed promptly).

This is including the rear of your home when your yard is visible from the golf course, any street or neighboring property; • Please ensure that your lawn has been properly treated for weeds and fertilized; lawn maintenance should occur on a regular basis and your lawn and landscape beds should be free of weeds and grass and ample pine straw or mulch should be installed at least twice per year; • Automobiles, trucks and vans must be parked in garages or driveways and may not be parked elsewhere on the property. Unlicensed or inoperable vehicles are considered a nuisance and will be removed. No motorized vehicles are permitted on pathways or unpaved common areas. For example, golf carts should not be operated on sidewalks; • Recreational vehicles including but not limited to motor homes, boats, jet skis, trailers, motorcycles, minibikes, scooters, go carts, golf carts, campers, buses, commercial trucks and vans must be parked in garages or be subject to removal from the property. Recreational vehicles may be operated on the streets within the neighborhood by a licensed driver in accordance with Georgia law; • The exterior of your home (to include the roof) should not have any rotting wood, missing shutters, peeling paint, mold or any other unsightly condition; • Yard signs are not permitted. Total Time: 3 hours 20 mins

INGREDIENTS THYME-ROASTED TURKEY • 1 12- to 14-lb turkey (thawed if frozen) • 4 small onions, quartered • 1/2 bunch fresh thyme, plus more for serving • 3 tbsp. softened butter or olive oil • Kosher salt • Pepper • 2 large carrots, cut into 2-inch pieces • 2 stalks celery, cut into 2-inch pieces • 3/4 c. low-sodium chicken broth • Red champagne grapes, kumquats and pomegranates, for serving THYME-ROASTED TURKEY GRAVY • Roasting pan from roasted turkey and its contents (turkey removed) • 1 c. dry white wine or hard cider • 2 c. low-sodium chicken broth • 4 tbsp. unsalted butter • 1/3 c. all-purpose flour • 4 sprigs fresh thyme • Kosher salt • Pepper

RECIPE PREPARATION THYME-ROASTED TURKEY 1. Working on baking sheet, remove giblets and neck of turkey from cavities. Reserve neck and discard giblets. Using paper towels, pat turkey dry. Stuff half of onions and thyme into main cavity.

2. Heat oven to 375°F. Tie turkey legs together with kitchen twine.

Tuck wing tips underneath body (this will prevent them from burning). Rub turkey with butter (or oil) and season with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper.

3. Place turkey neck, carrots, celery, and remaining onions and thyme in large roasting pan. Place roasting rack in pan and place turkey on top.

4. Roast turkey until thermometer inserted into thickest part of thigh registers 165°F, 2 1/2 to 3 hours. (Cover turkey loosely with foil if it browns too quickly, and add broth to pan if vegetables begin to scorch.)

5. Carefully tilt turkey to empty juices from cavity into pan. Transfer turkey to carving board or cutting board set in rimmed baking sheet (to catch juices while carving). Cover loosely with foil and let rest at least 25 minutes. Reserve pan and contents to make gravy. Carve and garnish turkey as desired. Serves 12.

THYME-ROASTED TURKEY GRAVY 1. Remove and discard vegetables, thyme and neck from roasting pan. Strain pan drippings into fat separator (or measuring cup); let stand 5 minutes so fat rises to top. Leaving fat behind (or spooning it off if not using separator), pour juices from bottom into large (4-cup) measuring cup.

2. Place empty roasting pan across 2 stove burners on mediumhigh. Add wine and cook, stirring and scraping up any browned bits, 1 minute.

3. Pour wine mixture into measuring cup with pan juices and add enough broth to make 4 cups liquid total.

4. Melt butter in large saucepan on medium. Sprinkle flour over top and cook, whisking, until deep brown, 4 to 5 minutes.

5. Gradually whisk in broth mixture; bring to a boil. Add thyme sprigs, reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened, 8 to 12 minutes. If necessary, season with salt and pepper. Strain just before serving. Makes about 3 1/2 cups.

CELEBRATION OF FRIENDSHIPS NEW AND OLD IN TOB On Friday, Nov 6th, 2020, our Empty Nesters Group enjoyed an awesome night together, finally. It was wonderful to meet so many new neighbors we have missed getting to know over this past year as well as getting reacquainted with our friends we have not seen in a while. We heard from so many new people what a wonderful neighborhood we have in Traditions and how much they wanted to get involved and get to know more people. Well, everyone certainly was looking forward to this event as we had the largest turnout ever with half being new to the neighborhood.

We could not have asked for a better night as most of the night was spent outside by the pool. Everybody gathered in our usual fashion with appetizers and a few drinks, to include Nancy Bolens’ Fall Sangria, while we mingled and got caught up on life or meeting new neighbors. Everyone enjoyed the catered dinner from Sugar and Spice of barbecue and fixings, with apple cobbler for dessert. They did a great job of serving everyone in a very timely manner.

We had DJ Broderick rocking the night away with dance music and taking requests outside by the pool. This was truly a night of fun and laughter, getting to know each other and a time to celebrate everyone in our TOB family.

While it makes us sad, they have resigned from our committee, we want to say a big “THANK YOU” to Carol Higbie and Beth Eggleston for their participation on our committee. We will miss you but expect to see your smiling faces at our future events. We are not sure when our next event will be, but we are looking for a few more volunteers for our committee. We usually have one meeting a month to plan for the next month (theme, décor, games & food), depending on theme, maybe a work day to create the items needed and then assistance with setup as well as cleanup for the actual event. You do not have to be available for every event. Beth Franklin and Shelley Lovelady have expressed interest in joining our committee already.

DEAR GOLF AND SOCIAL ENTHUSIASTS, Thank you for your interest in the various membership opportunities Traditions Golf and Country Club has to offer. Now is an exciting time

Currently, the ladies have standing tee times are Mondays at 11 am and Tuesday through Friday at 10:20 am. You need to call the pro shop 48 hours in advance to reserve your spot. You can make reservations for up to two weeks at a time. Do not worry about handicaps since the skill levels vary widely. These women golf for fun.

SENIOR MEN’S GOLF GROUP

The senior men gather to play an organized format of stroke play on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. You never know who you will get paired with on these days, so it is a great opportunity to meet your fellow neighbors and make new friends. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, it is just playing with whomever you like (assuming they want to play with you too). 10 Healthy Tips

FOR SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS (COVID-19 STYLE)

I bet your holiday is going be drastically different like ours. Honestly, it is not going to feel like holiday not being with all our family. Whatever your holiday feels like this year, stay committed to your health and fitness goals and I hope these tips will help. This too shall pass!

1. It is not about the actual holidays.

What you do on Christmas Day is not your major concern. It is all the other days in between that will determine if your holidays are healthful. You may encounter holiday treats at random at work or at home from a kind neighbor bringing you a homebaked gift. These situations are more frequent than a binge on a holiday. Overeating on any one day is not going to get you out of shape. Just like doing things right one day is not going to get you in shape. It is all the little things daily that determine if you are moving toward fitness or away from it.

2. List your top 2-3 favorite treats during the holidays and commit to having only those.

We have all got our favorites. List them, and stick to them so you can enjoy your favorites without consuming any “accidental” junk food you weren’t planning on.

3. Let go of perfect.

We do not expect it in other areas of life – school, work or in with our family members. So why do we expect “perfect” when we think about our fitness routines? You may miss a workout. In fact, everyone will at some point. It is not the end of the world.

Really. Just make sure you get the next one done.

4. Forget your workout routine; just challenge yourself.

You may not have time for your full routine, so do not do it! Exert yourself for 10 minutes if that is all you have. Your body responds to the challenge of exercise, not to the amount of time you spend doing it.

5. Focus on what you can do, not what you cannot.

Every year I hear an endless parade of, “I’ve just been so busy with the holidays, that I couldn’t workout.” This year focus on what you can do instead of what you cannot. Look for solutions instead of repeatedly dwelling on the problems and obstacles.

6. Ask yourself, “Do I really have to _________?”

There is likely something that you tell yourself you “have to” do that you do not. Maybe it is sending out holiday cards to everyone in your address book or decorating the place to the hilt. You have more choices than you think.

7. Do what you enjoy.

Maybe you enjoy walking or practicing on the courts. Do this instead of something you do not like to do because you probably will not do it! For functional strength, do as many sets as possible/ reps of these 5 bodyweight exercises in one session for a well-rounded routine: squats, lunges, pushups, pull-ups, and bicycle crunches.

8. Half is enough.

Eat only half of the less nutritious food on your plate. For example, want that favorite treat, cut it in half or only cut a sliver. You will still feel satisfied!

9. Reduce sugar or omit it altogether on your vegetables.

One of our favorite dishes is sweet potato casserole with pecan, brown sugar, and butter topping. My mom would also put eggs and a lot of sugar in the potatoes themselves, which made the casserole overly sweet. So, I started volunteering to make them and found I could reduce and in fact eliminate the sugar and eggs altogether in the potatoes without compromising the dish. Experiment and you might find you can make some dishes healthier, but still very delicious and enjoyable!

10. Remember that the holidays come at the same time every year Your favorite holiday comes on the same day each year (for the most part). Those annual celebrations will not catch you by surprise, so there is no reason why you cannot plan for them. Unknown interruptions to your fitness program like car trouble or sick children cannot always be avoided, but when celebrations come every year there is no excuse.

Use your smarts and creativity combined with some of the tips above to come up with a plan for celebrating that will allow you to enjoy the festivities without wrecking your fitness plan in the process.

Keep at it and you will get a little better each year!

It is hard to believe it is already December and 2020 is coming to an end… Finally!!!

I know 2020 has been the most unusual and difficult year for us all. May 2021 be a year of new beginnings, abundance, new cures and treatments and Blessings bountiful.

I hope that many of you who have thought about doing Yoga, realize that it is truly something for everyone. We all need it, and it is easily attainable.

I began doing Yoga right after my third child. I tried it on the Wii Fit. I loved it. It challenged me and made me feel great after every practice.

After a few weeks of consistency. (Consistency is KEY!) I felt so good! My stress levels were down, I was sleeping better, despite having a newborn…. and I thought “how can I make myself do this forever?” That is when I decided to become a teacher. It was the best decision I ever made! It has been so rewarding and beneficial! Yoga is truly the fountain of Youth!!!

Yoga is not just about exercising. Yoga is a way of being, moving, and healing, that helps people release tension and handle challenge with ease. When you find ease in effort, your body and life become very capable and strong. You become an expert at creating space in your life for peace, creativity, inspiration, and all around feeling great!

Yoga does not have to be performed in a group setting.

There are so many ways to incorporate yoga into your daily life. Here are a few tips to keep your body young, your joints loose, and your muscles activated, right from your own home!

3. Hug your knees to your chest, flex and point your feet.

Allow your knees to shift left and right. Waking up the spine with gentle twists.

4. Extend your feet and arms towards the sky, circle your ankles and wrist both ways.

5. Pull your knees back to your chest, come to a fetal position and then gently rise to a seated position with feet on the floor. Loosen the knees by extending them and bending them.

Now you have gotten your blood circulated and your joints lubricated. This quick daily routine does a body good! How easy was that?

Throughout the day bend your joints, circle them, tap your fingers to your palms, roll your wrist, make a fist and release, interlace your fingers, and make some waves. Our joints stiffen as we age or from lack of movement. Like a Tin Man needs oil, we need to lubricate our joints through movement.

Especially if you are on the computer all day…. move…. breathe……

Bedtime Routine Before going to bed, get on the floor.

1. Open your knees wide and bring your big toes together.

With a deep exhale begin to extend your arms, lowering your chest toward your knees and forehead to the floor.

(Extended Childs Pose) This will stretch your lower back.

Stay here and take some slow deep breaths 1-5 minutes.

2. Now lie on your back and do some of the fetal twists again like you did in the morning. Bringing your knees to chest, side to side, then eventually bringing them all the way down to one side with arms extended at shoulders and palms up. Whatever side your knees are rested look the opposite way for a full body twist. Concentrate on your deep breathing. 1-5 min. each side. Sleep well my friend!!

Morning Routine Before rising out of bed, take a moment to do some deep breathing.

1. Stretch your lungs and allow your breath to reach your diaphragm.

2. Reach your arms above your head and stretch your body.

SLOW COOKER WINTER VEGETABLE SOUP WITH SPLIT RED LENTILS Hearty slow cooker winter vegetable soup with split red lentils. This healthy slow cooker soup recipe is packed with vegetables, red split lentils, and finished with a drizzle of olive oil, chopped parsley, and parmigiano-reggiano cheese! Naturally gluten free (and vegetarian friendly: just use vegetable broth in place of regular chicken broth).

2. If you do not own a slow cooker with a stovetop-safe insert (or wish to skip step one): Place the insert on the slow-cooker base (this recipe will fit a 4-quart capacity slow cooker). Add the olive oil, onion, celery, carrot, zucchini, potatoes, split red lentils, chopped tomatoes, parmigiano rind, bay leaves, thyme, chicken stock, kosher salt, and black pepper. Stir together. Cook on high heat for 4-6 hours, or until the red lentils are tender (or alternatively, cook on low heat for 8-10 hours).

3. In the last hour of cook time (or 2 hours, if you are cooking over low heat), add the thinly sliced cabbage. Remove and discard the dried bay leaves and any tough thyme sprigs. Adjust the seasoning to taste salt and pepper – you will most likely need to be liberal on the salt for this soup!

4. Serve the soup and top each serving with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a sprinkling of freshly chopped parsley, and freshly grated parmigiano-reggiano.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS:  Older lentils tend to dry out and might take significantly longer to cook.  Try to find a bag at the grocery store or choose them from a bulk bin that gets refreshed o en (i.e. not the bag of lentils that has been sitting in your convenience store for three years on the top shelf).

Giving Christmas

Dear Traditions Neighbors, As we have done in the past several years, we are once again going to be collecting gifts for Jackson County children who would otherwise not have a Christmas. This is such a blessed community and so, we are asking each home to make a contribution of one or more items to fill our boxes during the next 5-6 weeks. Whatever you can afford to give will be greatly appreciated.

Gifts are to be unwrapped, for ages 5 thru 18, toys, games, puzzles, superheroes, transformers, video game and movie characters, art supplies (coloring books, crayons, markers, drawing tablets, water colors, brushes, etc.) nail polish sets, jewelry, watches, Legos, cars, trucks and things that go, hats, scarves, gloves, sweatshirts, socks, wallets, purses (fill one with nail polish, emery boards, makeup and socks or earrings), makeup sets, gift cards, (in envelopes, please) for the oldest kids are great since they are harder to buy for and more expensive.*Gift cards must have the receipt showing activation with them* There will be a box at the Community Association office to accept your generosity.

However, your friends at the Traditions of Braselton Discovery Center are proud to report that things appear to be trending UP for 2021. So, as we prepare to wave bye-bye to 2020 and usher in the New Year, we do so with great hope. Here are just a handful of things we can be hopeful for in 2021…

• Traditions of Braselton continues to prove to be THE PLACE TO BE for some of the South’s finest production and custom builders.
