FALL, FOOTBALL, FOOD AND FUN

By Cheryl Morrell What goes better with fall and football, but, Chili, of course.

Who cares if it’s still 90+degrees outside? So, we had a chili cook off and had great fun. October 5th, the tables were decorated with college pennants, scarecrows, fall leaves and brightly wrapped Dove chocolates. Folks were asked to sign up to bring Chili to be judged, coleslaw or broccoli type salads, appetizers, corned bread or rolls, or dessert. “Boy, Howdy,” did we eat.

The appetizers were awesome and plentiful, but we had to save room for the CHILI. Mary Ann & Jim Barry, Sarah & Ralph NeSmith, Kay & Richard Hyslop, Debbie and John Fratini, and Nancy and Mark Allen provided us with chili to sample and then to eat. The sides of broccoli salad and coleslaw and corned bread and rolls were perfect accompaniments and the yummy desserts rounded out the meal. After all the votes were tallied, the winner of the Chili Cook Off was Kay Hyslop. Runner up was Debbie Fratini. Both ladies received Chef’s hats and a fabulous prize. Due to technical difficulties, the evening’s activity was postponed in favor of conversation, comradery and an early night. Thank you to all who helped make this another successful event and a nice last event for Kay and Richard Hyslop.

THE RIVALRY CONTINUES

by Cindy Hohman COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm knew the third-ranked Bulldogs were built to last after their run to last season’s national title game. He believes the rest of the country found that out on Saturday, September 8th.

Fromm threw for 194 yards and a touchdown, all three of Georgia’s latest running combo scored touchdowns and the Bulldogs turned an expected Southeastern Conference showdown into a 41-17 rout over No. 24 South Carolina on Saturday.

“We weren’t going anywhere,” Fromm said. “We’ve worked too hard to stay where we are.”

That was evident at Williams-Brice Stadium, where Georgia (2-0, 1-0 SEC) used dominating offense and suffocating defense to win its fourth straight over the Gamecocks (1-1, 0-1).

HEALTH

ARE YOU AT RISK? Seems lately, we’ve had some close friends and friends of friends die suddenly of a heart attack before the age of 50. Two of my female clients have had a heart attack and stroke before the age of 50! It’s scary to think that you or a loved one could suddenly pass from a disease. Especially from one that is preventable.

Do you know if you are at risk? Know today!

Before I agree to train a client, I have to determine his/her health risk factors (see below) for having a heart attack or any other disease before starting a program. These factors determine if we can go forward with training or, if they first have to get medical clearance from their doctor.

• Male 45 or older or female 55 or older (unpreventable lol).

• Father before 55 or mother before 65 or other first-degree male/ female relative had a heart attack or sudden death (no control of).

• Current smoker or have quit within the previous 6 months or are exposed to second hand smoke (absolutely preventable).

• Lead a sedentary lifestyle not getting AT LEAST 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on AT LEAST 3 days/week (definitely preventable).

• BMI is equal to or over 30, or your waist girth more than 40” for men and 35” for women (preventable).

• SBP equal to or over 140 and/or DBP equal to or over 90 (usually preventable).

• LDL cholesterol is equal to or over 130mg/dL, or HDL cholesterol UNDER 40 mg/dL, or total serum cholesterol equal to or greater than 200 mg/dL (usually preventable). Having HDL levels at 60 mg/dL is good!

(Eat lots of omega 3’s).

• Fasting plasma glucose is equal to or over 100 mg/dL (usually preventable).

We should have a physical where you are fasting every year and ask the doctor what the numbers mean. If you have some of these risk factors, do something about it. I encourage you not to settle or use genetics as an excuse. The latest Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans released by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recommends AT LEAST 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. They also recommend strength or resistance training 2 – 3 times per week as well. Both will help you to increase strength, lose weight or maintain your current weight, have more lean muscle mass than fat, speed up your metabolism, prevent injury and/or disease and much more!

You owe it to yourself and to your loved ones to get at least the minimum of physical activity if possible and pump some iron 2 -3 times a week!

EMPTY NESTERS

Empty Nesters...

IT’S ALL THERE IN BLACK AND WHITE

By Cheryl Morrell In celebration of our newly renovated clubhouse, the Empty Nesters held a sophisticated dinner party on September 14th with a black and white theme. Everyone was asked to wear black, white or a combination of the two. Tables, draped in black were decorated with vases of submerged white flowers that were lit from below. They had black and white polka dots circles and mirrored glass under them and tea lights set around them. Table settings were silver chargers with silver trimmed white plates, ‘silverware” and white napkins. Dinner and sides (provided by our budget) consisted of Beef Tenderloin expertly prepared by Richard Hyslop, Roasted Yukon Gold Parslied Potatoes (Kay Hyslop and Margaret Hanson) and Haricot Vert with Sliced Almonds (Cheryl Morrell) and Garlic Buttered Croissants (Beth Eggleston). The members were asked to bring their choice of Appetizers, Caesar Salad or Dessert. Everything was absolutely Delicious!

In keeping with the “It’s all there in black and white” theme, We had a Historical display of newspaper articles(black and white) from the raucous zoning hearings for the proposed Mulberry Plantation land development (which NOBODY wanted in Jackson County) to the body buried on the 13th Fairway to the latest newsletter articles. It was a timeline of Twenty Years of Traditions from 1998 to 2018, accompanied by articles from the Traditions Newsletter and photos dating all the way back to 2003. Thanks to Jill Loftus and Tina Tolliver-Erhardt for all the great photos. There was also a display of Articles written by Jill Loftus detailing the histories and historical places of Braselton and Hoschton and an Article detailing the history of the Delaperriere Family and cemetery (part of the Delaperriere Loop) written by Jim Barbieri and Jerry Hohman.

It was delightful, elegant and informative evening. Thank you to all who worked to make it so. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Kay Hyslop and husband Richard for all the support they’ve given as part of the EN committee and most of all for their friendship and camaraderie. They will have moved out of Traditions by the time you read this.

They’re downsizing and moving to Oakwood. We wish them well with their new home. They will be missed.

Building a

Home

UGA COMMUNITY BANDS TOGETHER TO HELP DEVON GALES, SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY RECEIVER PARALYZED IN 2015, GET A NEW HOME IN TRADITIONS OF BRASELTON

Whit Marshall laid down a map on a table before Tish and Devon Gales showing the Traditions of Braselton neighborhood that would become their future home. Though months in the making, the Gales family still couldn’t believe they were actually looking into the prospect of life in Braselton — and they could pick whichever lot they wanted.

“That right there was a blessing from God,” said Tish Gales, Devon’s mother. “People don’t just volunteer to do this.”

But there was Marshall, a former University of Georgia football player, extending a hand to Devon, a former Southern University receiver who was paralyzed during a game against UGA in 2015. Now CEO of Paran Homes, Marshall is working with Mike Elrod, a realtor with Tara Properties Inc., to get the Gales family into a new home come summer 2019.

Devon is still adapting to a life changed forever on Sept. 26, 2015, when, during a kickoff return in the second half of a game with the University of Georgia, Devon and Georgia placekicker Marshall Morgan collided.

Devon crumpled, unmoving, onto the field after the impact.

“I hit him in the shoulder and instantly everything was limp,” he said. “And my mind said, ‘This is it.’ So basically, I‘m laying there not able to feel anything or get up, and I was wondering what was going on.” Removed from the field before a stunned audience, Devon was transported to a nearby hospital.

And on the way, someone had to call Devon’s family — it was the first game the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, residents had ever missed.

“I knew they were going to be panicking so they took me to the hospital and they asked if I wanted to talk to my parents,” Devon said. “I talked to my dad and it was probably the most emotional thing I’ve heard because he was just crying. And then I started crying.”

He went through a four-hour surgery after doctors realized he had shattered his C6 vertebra. Sitting just above the C6, the C4 and C5 vertebrae were pinching his spinal cord. Ultimately, he received 20 screws to hold the vertebrae together and two rods inserted to help stabilize his spine.

He remains paralyzed from the waist down. Since the injury, he has been working at the Shepherd Center to regain strength in his upper body. He can now navigate the world using a wheelchair.

During Devon’s recovery, the family moved to an apartment in Atlanta to be close to the Shepherd center, then a condominium in Gwinnett, but it’s been a struggle for Devon to get around those homes. There’s simply not enough room for him, his mother and his two siblings. His father is still living in Baton Rouge.

That’s where Marshall came in.

“They’re just a terrific family and great folks,” Marshall said.

“So it’s good to help them out.”

He has about 300 lots in the Traditions neighborhood and wanted to join in the support of Devon and his family. Marshall isn’t the only pair of hands from UGA chipping in to help the Gales: The University itself has supported the Gales family since the moment he was carried from the field in Athens.

Upstairs, Devon’s siblings will have a room and bathroom to themselves along with an upstairs living room. Everything on the main level of the home will be accessible for Devon, and the home is an easy drive to the Shepherd Center. He said he’s making that trip with his mother three times each week.

“If they could only understand the burden that this has taken off,” Tish said. “I’m constantly saying thank you … because it’s not every day someone volunteers to give you a home or give you a choice of where you want to live.”

“From the point that he was on the ground to this point today, they’ve supported us in every way they could,” Tish said.

Marshall’s way of helping was providing the land for a brand new home to be built for the Gales — free of charge.

“I was excited about this because I know how difficult it’s been for them these last few years,” Marshall said. “It’s a great thing for the Gales and it’s a great thing for this community.”

The home will have nearly 6,000 square feet of living space for the family, a major upgrade from its 1,300-square foot condo in Gwinnett. The main level will feature two master suites, a great room, kitchen, and breakfast area. On Devon’s side of the home, there will also be a therapy room, outfitted with equipment similar to what is at the Shepherd Center, where he can continue his rehabilitation at home.

• 1 slice thick bacon • 2 cups fresh, peeled and sliced (¼ inch pieces) pumpkin* • 1 medium yellow onion peeled and sliced • ½ cup fresh chicken stock or canned chicken broth • 1-pound pork butt or shoulder cut into ⅛ inch strips • ½ teaspoon ground cumin • Salt and pepper to taste

Steps to Make It

1. In a frying pan or wok, sauté the bacon until it is transparent.

2. Add the pumpkin slices and onions. Stir around in the rendered bacon fat and add the chicken broth.

3. Cover and cook over medium heat until the pumpkin is tender, about 15 minutes. Remove the vegetables from the pan.

4. Reheat the pan and sauté the pork until done, about 5 minutes.

5. Add the vegetables back to the pan and toss with the cumin, salt, and pepper. Cover for just a moment so that the flavors may develop, then serve hot.

ENFORCEMENT

1. All golf carts must be registered within 30 days of obtaining the cart.

1. Any violation of this Policy should be reported to the Association’s managing agent. Any resident may report a violation to the managing agent or any Association Board Member in writing. The complaint should have as much identifying information as is possible, including but not limited to the identity of the party violating the Policy, the cart registration number, the date, time, and approximate location of the incident, and a detailed description of the alleged violation.

2. Drivers must have a valid driver’s license or driver’s permit valid in the State of Georgia. No one may sit in the driver’s lap while the cart is in motion.

3. Golf carts will adhere to the same driving and parking rules and laws as automobiles. Additionally, golf carts may also park in any future designated golf cart parking spaces.

4. Drivers must pull over and yield to passing motor vehicles.

5. Golf carts may only be used on streets designated within the established neighborhood. Golf carts shall not be operated on any sidewalk, pedestrian walkway multi-use path including the big pond, trail, grassy area or any other non-designated public ways. Private golf carts are not allowed on any part of the golf course at any time.

6. Golf carts may only be driven between dawn and dusk unless equipped with headlights and tail lights in operating condition.

7. All passengers must be properly seated while cart is in motion and may not be transported in a negligent manner or in a manner inconsistent with the cart manufacturer’s recommendations.

The number of passengers shall not exceed the seating capacity of the cart, including the driver. A child four years of age or younger may be seated in the lap of a non-driving adult.

2. Any act constituting a violation of this Policy may result in a fine of $100.00. A second violation may result in a fine of $250.00. A third violation may result in a fine of $500.00 and revocation of the registration to operate the golf cart in the Association’s community. Any additional violations may result in a fine of $1000.00 and legal action. Any threat to safety may result in immediate legal action.

3. All reported violations will be reviewed by the Association’s Board of Directors to determine if the report of a violation is valid before any action is taken.

4. Prior to levying any fines in accordance with this Policy, the affected Owner shall be given notice and an opportunity for a hearing before the Board of Directors.

5. The golf cart registration forms will be maintained by the Association management company.
