About Sheryl God has blessed me with so many gifts. But, if I had to pick just one thing, I love the most, it would be life. A close second would be people, but that’s simply because my world revolves around loving and caring for the people, I share my life with. In my mind strangers genuinely are just friends I haven’t met yet.

Growing up in a small town in Florida, gave me an appreciation of the simple pleasures in life at an early age.

I spent my formative years learning the value of family and friends, connecting with nature and the joy of giving back to my community.

Whether it was the scent of flowers in the spring or the sound of the waves lapping against the beach, I could always count on nature to help me feel centered. Restoring

my natural balance holistically helped me handle the struggles that came with becoming an adult and I knew helping others feel this way was my calling in life.

As an adult, my passion for helping people feel better holistically took form of a career as an Esthetician. For over a decade I’ve dedicated myself to mastering my Esthetic skills to combine my love for natural remedies and desire to care for others. 2 years ago, I’ve expanded my ability to help others by becoming a massage therapist.

Choosing Colors & Patterns Like a Pro!

Designers are known for putting together the perfect color combinations and mixing and matching patterns in unexpected ways. Everyone wants that designer look, but is it something you can do yourself? Are designers’ just born knowing exactly what to put together? While a great designer must have a certain amount of innate talent, there are tricks of the trade that you can learn.

One trick is the 60/30/10 rule. When using 3 colors or patterns, 60% should be in a solid pattern or neutral color. 30% in a medium scale pattern or 2nd color and 10% in the 3rd pattern / color. The color on your walls and floors would be considered the 60% with the furniture being 30% and accessories / artwork 10%.

This 60/30/10 rule also applies to the furniture – The largest pieces, like your sofa should be in the main fabric or pattern, chairs in the 2nd choice and pillows (the smallest items) in the 3rd choice.

Another trick is to start with an inspiration piece like a rug, some fabric or a painting that you love, then build your whole room around it. Start with a basic neutral color in the background of your inspiration piece. And neutral colors don’t have to just be tan or grey; green, navy and yellow qualify. Next pick out a color you want to bring attention to. You can choose the most prominent color in the piece, or just the color you like the best! Next pick out a 3rd color that you would like to use as an accent color. Use the 60/30/10 rule on how much of each color to use. For example - neutral color on the walls, main color on the bedding, and accent color in the accessories, etc.

Using the 60/30/10 rule means that you can coordinate colors and patterns in your home with confidence!

ADJUSTMENTS TO MAKE HOME CAREGIVING EASIER

TAKE NOTE OF EVERYONE’S SPECIFIC NEEDS – Between hiring an at-home caregiver to moving your loved one into your own home, there will be specific housing needs for all residents and visitors. Take note of your loved one first. Do they require specialized care? Do they need a specialist to come by on a regular basis? Are there certain new diet restrictions? Does the home need to be made wheelchair accessible?

CREATE A PLAN - Having something as simple as a sheet that maps out the changes that need to be made in your home can make a world of difference. Make sure you have taken inventory of everything that needs to be adjusted in your home. This will help you narrow down the essentials versus “nice to haves” when it comes to deciding what can and cannot be implemented.

GET RID OF THE CLUTTER - No matter if it’s your needs or the at-home environment, clutter makes your day-to-day that much more difficult. When making adjustments to your home, make sure you get rid of as many items as possible that aren’t a necessity. You don’t need to make your home bare but consider extra items that could potentially be a hazard to moving around the home.

DON’T OVERLOOK THE BATHROOM - For aging loved ones, the bathroom can end up being one of the most dangerous parts of the home. Bending and lifting may be more difficult, so without a bar to help, the risk of falling and serious injury could be much more common. The shower can also prove to be quite the hazard when going in and out of a slippery surface.

There are plenty of ways you can make your bathroom more accessible for seniors. For example, you can install grab bars and anti-slip mats in the shower to prevent falls.

CREATE AT LEAST ONE “NO-STEP” ENTRY TO THE HOME - If your loved one requires a wheelchair or walker, think about no-step entrances. Getting up and down steps can prove to be difficult and may even be considered a hazard in certain areas of your entryway. You can find ramps that can be placed right over your existing steps, or you may want to consider cementing a certain entryway to get rid of the steps. Whether you create a ramp or use the back door that doesn’t have any steps, make sure there’s at least one part of the home that allows you to leave and enter without any steps.

EXPLORE POCKET DOORS - You’d be surprised by how a simple change, such as switching to pocket doors, can be. If your loved one requires a wheelchair, using pocket doors will help keep the door from swinging and hitting the wheelchair.

OPEN LETTER TO TRADITIONS RESIDENTS Dear Traditions’ Residents, It has only been a year and a half since the clubhouse renovations, new furniture, kitchen and flooring were completed. In that time, we have had furniture broken, scarred, chipped, and stained. The walls and woodwork have been damaged with tape, scuffed by shoes and dirty hands, the bottom of the door going out the front is black from being kicked by shoes. I cannot believe this is the way any of us care for our homes or those of our friends. This is not the way we should be caring for our gathering space. The clubhouse is there for all of us.

It provides a unique setting for all kinds of events with good facilities for private catering. Our rental fee of $100.00 is extremely low compared to other subdivisions which charge much more.

I have taken on a newly established position as monitor of the clubhouse. My duties will be to check the clubhouse routinely, meet with renters before they set-up to document existing damages and meet with them after their event to document any new damages or rules violations. It is unfortunate that this has become necessary.

There will be a Clubhouse Usage Manual (THE NOTEBOOK) available in the kitchen area that will provide a check list of all duties, photos of proper furniture arrangement, table and chair storage, etc.

This manual and its directions will apply to ALL users, renters and neighborhood groups alike.

The following is a partial list of rules and expectations.

The upholstered furniture has been professionally cleaned. No, cream was not a great choice. The furniture company’s mistake and they wouldn’t/couldn’t exchange them.??? So, we deal and are extra careful. *No one working with any kind of craft materials (paint, glue, glitter, etc.) should be on or around the furniture (there were colored child sized hand prints on the back of one sofa). * Please see to it that spills/stains are wiped up and treated IMMEDIATELY just as you would in your own home. This includes the upholstered seats on the gray wooden chairs. As host, of any group activity or private event, you are responsible. All the scuffs, dirt, tears on the walls and woodwork are going to be cleaned and repaired and at some point, they will be repainted. *If you scuff the walls or woodwork, please clean it off. * NOTHING may be hung on the walls with tape of any kind.

Only poster putty or properly used (read the directions carefully) Command Strips are allowed. Note: Please be sure all residue form poster putty is removed from the walls. * The gray chairs, from the gray round tables, must be lifted to move them. The groves in the flooring cause the legs to loosen over time when they are dragged back and forth. This has also caused the legs to crack and chip. The legs have had lock washers added and been re-tightened. Please pick them up. * Please, be mindful of what gets put on tabletops so scratches and gouges do not occur. Check out the top of the coffee table. * If you move the furniture out of your way for an activity, table setup, etc., Please return them to their rightful places. There will be a photo in THE NOTEBOOK if you are not sure.

This is our living room. Please treat it with respect and care. * If food and or beverages are present at your group meeting,

gathering or event, you and your participants are responsible for spills, stains, etc., and clean up. Any neighborhood group(s) that is/ are found to be responsible for repeated damages, spills, misuse of or not replacing furniture, etc., will lose the use of the clubhouse. *One last rule (though this is not a complete list) that should be #1. No one is allowed in the clubhouse unless you have rented it for a private event, are setting up for a function, attending one or cleaning up from one (except the lifeguards on duty). And, absolutely NO ONE is allowed in the clubhouse with wet feet or on the furniture with wet or damp bathing suits, swim towels or swim cover-ups. (I don’t care if you do pay your dues, you are not entitled to damage property). The floor is dangerously slippery when wet and WHY would you even consider sitting on or laying on the upholstered furniture in wet bathing suits? (This has been a repeated occurrence recently) NO MORE! *All doors into the main clubhouse room are to be kept locked except when it is in use. The one by the kitchen will be unlocked when the lifeguards are present so they can use the refrigerator and kitchen for their food and beverages. It is for their use only. *Bathrooms are accessible through the doors from the pool deck near the gym and from the gym. There is NO NEED to go through the clubhouse.

We have maid service twice a week. There is no reason why the clubhouse should have filthy floors and be in disarray. When you are finished with the clubhouse, it should look like the maid service just left. If everyone left it a bit better than they found it, It would soon be perfect all the time. This is our clubhouse. Please, treat it as if it were yours.

A complete list of all responsibilities for clubhouse use will be given to the heads of all committees and will be in The Notebook along with supporting photos, and a list of deductions that will be made from the renter’s security deposit for each violation.

I still hear stories of people that do not hear about our events here in the neighborhood! If you have new neighbors, introduce yourselves, and make sure they are signed up to receive emails, are on the Homeowners private Facebook page, the Traditions Community Facebook page, and that they are getting the newsletter! If everyone is on these 4 avenues there is no way of not knowing what is going on in the neighborhood!!!

Also, Traditions has grown so much our events are RSVP! The only way we can plan is to have everyone RSVP even for free events (remember if you rsvp for free events…we plan on you being there). We purchase according to the rsvp… so if you don’t show up, it is money wasted). There also will be events that are for residents only so watch the details on each event!

It's Beginning to Look a lot like....Christmas!

Too early? Still too hot? Yes, we know that summer seems to be hanging on longer than usual this year. But it is only 3 more months until Christmas, and you know what that means, right?

It is time to start thinking about how you plan to decorate your house for the 2nd Annual Traditions Holiday Parade of Lights which will take place on Saturday evening, December 14.

A joint venture of the Hospitality Committee, the Social Committee, the Christmas Committee and the Traditions Golf Club, this event is probably second only to SheilaFest in popularity. All homeowners are invited to participate!!

Homeowners whose homes adjoin the golf course are asked to help us by decorating the

backs and sides of your homes (anything visible from the cart path) with holiday lights. On the night of the parade, our residents will drive golf carts along the golf path and be able to enjoy all of the holiday light and music displays before returning to the Golf Club for drinks and snacks.

Last year was our first time to host this event and it surpassed all of our expectations. We have no doubt that with your help, we can continue to expand and improve this opportunity for all of us to enjoy sharing the holidays with our friends and neighbors.

SUMMER COOLER POOL PARTY The day was Saturday, August 10, 2019. Lynn Kolb graciously invited us all to her house for a great evening pool party to end the summer. The Empty Nester’s came together for one of the highlight parties of the year to beat the heat, enjoy some time with friends, great food and splashing in the pool. We even managed to dodge the rain to enjoy a lovely evening. We enjoyed having our guests Lynn’s children Debbie, Scott, his girlfriend and Jen Morrell join us. They have heard so much about how fun these parties have been over the years and now that they have experienced one, they know why.

As always, our festivities began with a lot of food and comradery as we visited, relaxed and just enjoyed time spent together. We welcomed our newest members, Jennifer and Matt Dorough, who are in the process of building a house on Duncans Mill but currently living nearby.

The Empty Nester committee thanked Cheryl for her dedication and contributions as the EN Chairman with a few gifts of flowers and a wine basket of goodies (one white for Cheryl and one Red for Steve). Cheryl has tirelessly given her (and Steve’s) time and resources to this group over the years.

During her tenure, Cheryl has been integral to the growth of our group by working with the welcome committee and others to ensure our new neighbors are recognized and included. We are thankful for her behind-the scenes work from organizing activities, food, decorations, setup to cleanup. She led the way creating lots of fun and laughter for us all to enjoy. While Cheryl may be stepping out of the role of Chairman, she will still be an active member and now able to sit back and enjoy the festivities each month. Thank you Cheryl for all you have done, it has been appreciated more than you know.

The most poignant moment of the evening came in the form of a toast. As we all know Lynn is famous for her jello shooters at this pool party and this was one of Don’s favorite parties. So it was only fitting that Scott Kolb led us all in a toast, as we raised our shooters, in celebration to the life of a great man, husband, father, and our friend Don Kolb.

The rest of the evening was spent hanging out and enjoying each other’s company and splashing in the pool.

As the new chairman of the EN committee, I look forward to working with our great committee continuing to add to our group of friends and creating fun for all.

GO TEAM: EMPTY NESTERS TAILGATE PARTY Decked out in favorite team shirts and colors, thirty something of us got together for tailgate style goodies, favorite beverages, lots of laughter, chatting and mingling.

After consuming a lot of heavy hors d’oeuvres and yummy desserts, one couple from each of the five tables, was coerced into volunteering for our evenings entertainment, a rousing and often hilarious game of our version of “The Newly Wed Game”. In our case though, it was the Not So Newly Wed Game. The five couples who volunteered were Jim and Selba Harris, Jin and Janice Barbieri, Karin and Phil Waters, Donna and Keith Cowart and Suzanne and Bill Patterson. The gentlemen were asked to leave the room and the ladies were asked the following questions.

1. If your spouse had a super power, what would it be?

2. What is the strangest gift your spouse ever bought you/ 3. I really wish my spouse would ______________at home.

4. What is the first thing your spouse notices about the

opposite sex?

5. What is your spouse’s biggest phobia?

Then, the husbands returned and we asked them what they thought their wife said in answer to each question. Each couple scored 1pt. for a correct answer. Then there was the bonus question. What piece of clothing does your spouse(husband) wear that you can not stand. Worth 5 pts.

Here was much hilarity at some of the answers that cannot be delved into here. The final point tally showed the Pattersons in 3rd place with 6pts., the Cowarts in 2nd place with 7pts. and the Harrises in 1st place with 8 points.

Everyone received a ‘thank you for playing’ gift and the Harrises won a bucket for two containing two splits of champagne. Thank you to all our contestants for being such good sports and playing along. We learned that the number

The weather was perfect for our summer workday on Saturday August 24th. Much was accomplished, the guys pressure washed, installed new nets and score boards and much more.

If you haven’t already noticed all our swag “signs” have been placed on the front of the courts. We also decorated the bathrooms and put racks up to hang your tennis bags. Our courts are busy every day and it takes a lot of behind the scenes work to maintain the facilities. Currently, the ladies have two standing tee times Monday thru Friday starting at 9:20 AM. If you are interested in joining the Ladies Golf Group (even occasionally), please e-mail Pam Poppe at ppoppe@ mindspring.com if you wish to be included. Each Friday, Pam sends an e-mail to the group asking which days you are interested in golfing during the coming week. She only asks for a 48-hour notice so she can add or cancel tee times. Don’t worry about handicaps since the skill levels vary widely. These women golf for fun! SENIOR MEN’S GOLF GROUP

The senior men gather to play an organized format of stroke play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You never know who you will get paired with on these days, so it’s a great opportunity to meet your fellow neighbors and make new friends. On Thursdays, it’s just pair-up and play as you like. The course is closed on Tuesdays. Currently, our block of tee times starts at 10:00 AM. As the weather warms up, our standing tee tie will move to 9:30 AM. You can play as often or as little as you like; just show up at least 15 minutes before the first tee time. This is a social group with members of varying skill levels. HOW MUCH PROTEIN DO I REALLY NEED? There has been much debate over this question! Not only how much do our bodies need but what are the best sources.

Especially with the Paleo Diet becoming popular, much focus has been on protein. Personally, I don’t focus on just one macro nutrient but try to balance all three (protein, fat & carbs) into my daily meals. I get a little suspicious when certain eating plans focus on just one or eliminating any. Every cell in our body need all 3 macros, not just protein. Remember, food is providing the energy, nutrition and fuel our bodies need every day just to live and move and have our being!

So, how much do we need? Based on research, it depends on our age, gender, and level of physical activity but if we are eating a balanced diet, we are probably already getting enough protein. However, our protein choices could make a difference in our overall health and well-being. The amounts below are appropriate for individuals who get less than 30 minutes per day of moderate physical activity, beyond normal daily activities. Those who are more physically active may be able to consume more while staying within calorie needs.

Women Ages 19 – 51+: 5 to 5 ½ oz.

Men Ages 19 – 51+: 5 ½ to 6 ½ oz.

Listed below are some healthy protein choices: White meat chicken (without skin) Red meat (limit to once a week, filet or eye of round or the leanest cut you can get) Seafood (wild caught, salmon, mackerel, etc.)

Beans and Peas (adds fiber!)
