The Three Ingredients of Success As my year as Chamber Chairman draws to a close, I want to thank the community for allowing me this opportunity. We’ve had a fantastic year! The staff along with an outstanding group of Chamber volunteers and Board members have made great strides. We’ve had a successful HALLmark Campaign, helped the community pass a new SPLOST referendum, and done some great work in economic development, leadership and community development. (See Accomplishments on page 16.)

It is difficult to reflect on the year's accomplishments and not reflect on the community as a whole. This is a unique community. Holli and I have lived in several places around the country during our 20 years of marriage and we both agree that this community is unlike any other. The first reason is simply our geographic location. God put us in a good place to live. Not David Lee only do we in the South, but we live in the best part of the South. We’ve Jackson EMC got it all – a beautiful lake, mountains, and the thriving city of Atlanta in Chairman, Greater Hall close proximity. And then, consider the fact that Hall County is home to Chamber of Commerce several unique municipalities of its own like Oakwood, Flowery Branch, Gainesville, Lula, Buford, Braselton and Clermont. When you add all this up, you’ve got a unique blend of cultures which makes for a truly special place to live.

The second ingredient that makes ours special community is the people. We’ve just got good folks around here. People around here really care about one another and are willing to help each other, sometimes at a moment’s notice. We treat each other the way we like to be treated, realizing there are times when people need a little more help than usual, and it’s up to us to act.

The final ingredient of success in Gainesville-Hall County involves our willingness to set aside our individual needs and desires to work toward a common goal. This may sound cliché, but there is a spirit of cooperation and teamwork in this place that is unique. We have a healthy competition in business, but we do it in such a way that when the dust settles at the end of the day, the community and the citizens of Hall County ultimately win!

So three things – geographic location, people, and teamwork – three critical ingredients that make us a world-class community with a world-class chamber of commerce. From transportation and water issues to job creation, workforce development, and the community’s vision for the future, your chamber is actively engaged, and you are to be congratulated! It has been a privilege, an honor, to serve as the Chairman of the Chamber this year. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity and will be forever indebted to the community.

Chairman's Award to Randall Frost

The W.G. Mealor Award is named after the first chairman/ president of the Chamber, W.G. Mealor, who served from 19081917. The award is given by the Chairman to a Chamber volunteer who has gone beyond "the call of duty” working for the community.

Randall Frost is the managing partner of Stewart, Melvin & Frost. A native of Baxley, GA, Randall came to Gainesville in 1971 and has been involved in our community in so many ways: Chairman of the Gainesville City School Board of Education, President of United Way, the Boys & Girls Club, Hall County YMCA, President of the Arts Council and Humane Society. Randall was appointed to the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority in 2014 by Governor Deal. He served as Chamber Chairman in 2012-2013 and has continued to serve on the Chamber's Executive Committee as advisor and co-chair of HALLmark 2015-2020, an initiative that has raised over $2 million dollars to support economic, community and leadership development programs. Randall is always the first to support and attend Chamber events, is a true friend, a thoughtful and wise advisor, and a person who is always willing to help.

Founded by Gainesvillenative Carole Cox Hudgins in 1994, The Little Ladybug celebrates 20 years as a great one-stop solution for unique gifts, housewares, children’s clothing, stationary and invitations, the latest trends in jewelry, bridal and baby registries, free gift wrap and much more. Staring as a small shop on Thompson Bridge David Lee with Carole Hudgins, owner of The Little Road, the store became Ladybug, and husband Charles Hudgins. an instant success and expanded across the parking lot to a larger spot and its current location. With eight employees, Carole and her sales team focus on customer service and believe this is the most important part of running a gift shop. Carole notes that “Happy customers are the best advertising.” The Little Ladybug location makes it very easy for customers to shop, coming in and out quickly with plenty of parking. A home-town girl, Carole is a graduate and continued supporter of Gainesville High School and Brenau University. Joe and Deborah Caldwell opened Caldwell Electrical with six employees in 1988 in a small shop near the train depot in Gainesville.

Today their children, Daniel and Kristen, lead the family business with over 30 employees. They dispatch 20 trucks daily and recently purchased property for a new larger office and warehouse.

During the recent ice and snow storms that resulted in power loss for many homes, Georgia Power called upon Caldwell Electric to assist them with their workload to restore power to residential customers throughout Hall County. Family Business of the Year Duncan Exterminating Floyd and Sherry Duncan started Duncan Exterminating in 1981 in Gainesville.

Today, all three of their children (Brett Duncan, Matthew Duncan, and Tina Duncan Brady) work at the familyowned and operated business. Jim Mathis has served as President & CEO of the North Georgia Community Foundation since 1998, following a 25 year career in banking. Jim has grown the Foundation's assets to benefit numerous philanthropic endeavors across our community while provided leadership and direction to the creation of both the Athens and Forsyth County Community Foundation. ExportGA 2015: SBDC's 5 Week Course for Companies Seeking to Export Products

Since its inception in 1999, ExportGA has helped over 150 companies sell in excess of $40 million all over the world. The program has been nationally recognized for its quality and effectiveness by the North American Small Business International Trade Educators and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

ExportGA 2015 is an intensive three-month export-training program which allows export-ready companies to develop their skills through a series of five workshops on export methodology. By utilizing these skills throughout the program, new international sales opportunities are identified.

Companies accepted into the program will become skilled at finding profitable export markets, developing distribution channels, understanding foreign and U.S. regulatory issues, pricing and costing company products, submitting international quotations, processing accounts receivable and recognizing legal and cultural considerations. Additional one-on-one counseling will be provided by a team of trade experts from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Georgia Department of Economic Development, and the University of Georgia throughout the program.

Each participating company is assigned an international business student from the University of Georgia to help them with their research.

Johnson High School had 133 students participate in Mock Interviews as part of their Business and Technology curriculum. As part of the new Workforce Development Initiative, Chamber staff coordinated with Stacey Hulsey, Johnson HS Business Education FBLA Advisor, for community and business leaders to volunteer their time to conduct the interviews. Among the 21 volunteers were representatives from Lanier Islands, Kings Hawaiian, Baldor, Kubota, Signs by Tomorrow, Chestnut Mountain Church, Abercrombie Insurance, Kipper Tools, Spherion Staffing Services, Hall County Fire Services, EverFi, IMS Gear Georgia, PPG Architectural Coatings, Red Clay Interactive, and the Hall County Tax Commission Office. In preparation, the students created a resume, completed an application, and practiced a variety of sample interview questions. Thank you volunteers for contributing to the success of this program and providing valuable hands-on experience for students.

Key Economic Indicators

The Fall 2015 Session of The Wisdom Project, VISION 2030 Senior Leadership Program, kicks off on August 13 and includes eight programs, concluding on November 20. The program is a partnership of the Chamber and Brenau University. Through a hands-on service project and interaction with likeminded individuals from throughout the community, Wisdom Project participants experience a dynamic, multi-faceted view of Gainesville and Hall County, explore local issues and opportunities, and engage with community leaders.

Wisdom Project participants should be adults age 55 and older who have volunteer or leadership experience. Graduates of the program may serve on the Wisdom Keepers Council, an advisory group for subsequent programs and advocacy projects. The program fee is $175 per person, including materials and lunches. • Jinsung TEC of South Korea recently opened their new North American headquarters and operations in Oakwood South Industrial Park. The company manufactures undercarriage systems for construction equipment.

• The newly formed Gainesville-Hall County Workforce Development Task Force is collaborating with area employers, educators and community leaders and is dedicated to making an impact by building on a sustainable workforce that possesses the skills needed by employers.

• Gainesville-Hall County is the primary trade area serving nearly 500,000 Northeast Georgia residents. Highway 53 continues to be a successful retail corridor with over 1,500,000-square-feet of retail space. Anchor tenants Academy Sports, Hobby Lobby and Chipotle are under construction in the new North Lake Square Center.

• Kroger Marketplace, a 125,000-squarefoot grocery, retail and restaurant store, opened in March 2014 in Gainesville.

The development is the largest Kroger of its kind in the Southeast and is the anchor tenant in the 200,000-square-foot New Holland Market Place retail shopping center. Taco Bell, Senor Fiesta, Autozone, Verizon, Hulsey Dentistry and McDonald’s are also tenants.

• Lanier Technical College was named Georgia’s Technical College of the Year for 2014.

• Brenau University awarded its first doctorates (Doctor of Nursing Practice) in May 2014, seated its first candidates for the Occupational Therapy Doctorate in August 2014, and received approval to enroll candidates for Doctor of Physical Therapy in spring 2015.

• Atlanta Botanical Garden Gainesville, a 168-acre preserve opened this spring. The $20 million development includes gardens with a visitors center, children’s garden, amphitheater and pavilions.

• The South Hall Business Coalition brings educational programs to Chamber members on issues covering healthcare, education, transportation and government.

• 85% of Chamber members are small businesses at the heart of our economy.

• Hall County’s Food and Agribusiness sector has, by a wide margin, the largest county economic impact in Georgia, with over $5 billion in economic output and 17,642 direct jobs employed in the sector.

• The Agribusiness Annual Breakfast recognized the importance of agriculture in Gainesville-Hall County with awards to leaders in the industry.

• Over 400 attended the Annual Eggs & Issues Breakfast featuring the Hall County Legislative Delegation.

• The 8th Annual Chamber Chase 5K corporate wellness initiative was held at Riverside Military Academy with 2,000 participants running, walking and cheering on their corporate and community teams.

• The Chamber’s Beautification Awards Program continues to recognize homeowners and businesses with beautiful landscapes.

• The Chamber’s annual membership campaign netted over 100 new members and the membership base has grown to some 2,500.
