Welcome aboard. Thank you for flying Citywing and welcome aboard this flight today. We are now happily heading to our busiest time of the year for passengers travelling with us, the summer. In conjunction with Van Air, we arrange travel for over 400 passengers per day across the Citywing network. In terms of the number of flights we offer per day and the number of routes available for sale, Citywing are the largest air service provider from the Isle of Man.

It’s not always easy to find a locally based company that meets your individual requirements, sometimes you have search a little or ask for recommendations. However, I sincerely hope that for your air travel requirements, Citywing are where you stop looking and that we are a company that matches your needs. Thank you again for choosing Citywing, supporting the local economy and our passengers.

We pride ourselves on being local to the Island. We employ Isle of Man based staff and operate from our Hangar at the Isle of Man Airport. The aircraft, whilst owned and operated by Van Air are maintained and serviced on the Isle of Man at our Hangar. There is a strong “think local” message on the Island with a huge variety of local produce and services being sold. Consumers are encouraged to keep their pound on the Island and help encourage the local economy to grow. Being local does not always mean that you’re the best. It can be very easy to fall into a position of complacency, and we need to be mindful that all customers have a choice. The internet has opened up the world to us, and many of us shop for something online rather than paying a visit to somewhere local to save a pound or 2, because the service is better or simply for the convenience. At Citywing we strive constantly to ensure that our customers are happy to use us. We encourage feedback whether positive or otherwise, and will review anything a customer flags up to us.

3

Many local retailers and service providers now offer “click and buy” alternatives so that you can still shop local but from the comfort of your armchair without making that trudge to the shops. Citywing is no exception and with our online booking and check-in system, making a reservation for your next planned journey could not be simpler. We ourselves use as many locally based suppliers for our requirements as we can. From stationary to the vehicles we drive, these have all been purchased on the Island, supporting local retailers.

David Buck, Managing Director

www.citywing.com

At Citywing we are committed to looking for ways to improve our service to you. We would be grateful if you would complete this questionnaire online after your flight. The forms are collated once a week and automatically distributed to our Quality Manager. You can access the survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/Citywing or by scanning the QR code. All your answers are treated in the strictest confidence. Thanks for your help and we hope you enjoy your short flight.

Flights for next year’s TT Festival are available to book now with Citywing, with an enhanced timetable available to help even more fans visit the world-famous motorcycling event in 2016. Citywing carried more than 5,000 people to and from the Isle of Man during this year’s TT festival, with a significant increase in passenger numbers on its Belfast and Glasgow routes. With routes also available from Blackpool, Gloucester and Newcastle, Citywing hopes to bring even more TT fans to the Island for 2016. Additional flights will be available across all Citywing routes over the course of the two-week event between 28 May and 10 June, and tickets can be booked online now at Citywing’s website. Managing Director David Buck said: ‘Our special TT schedules have been a huge hit over the last few years, and we are very pleased to offer extra flights again for TT 2016. This year’s festival was one of the best yet, and we are already excited to see what is in store for next year! We strive to provide our customers with the best possible service, and so we refrain from increasing our fares during peak times such as the TT festival. 8

DID YOU KNOW? When hippos are upset, their sweat turns red. If you lift a kangaroo’s tail off the ground it can’t hop. A baby octopus is about the size of a flea when it is born. Sea otters hold hands when they sleep so they don’t drift away from each other. The average person walks the equivalent of twice around the world in a lifetime. Crocodiles often eat rocks. Dragonflies can see in all directions at once. Polar bears are left handed.

Cosmopolitan Cotswolds

CONNECT/MAGAZINE

The Cotswolds has some fantastic places to stay... if you are after vibrancy and cultural zing, check out these cities with sparkle and historic market towns.

Cheltenham Spa Fabulous festivals and events – Cheltenham is internationally renowned for its breathtaking cultural festival programme, blending history and heritage brilliantly with the modern day. As the cultural centre for the Cotswolds, Cheltenham offers something for everyone, from cutting edge jazz, classical and folk music, to horseracing, family music festivals, cricket and literature. Regency past – The town’s real origins lie in the discovery of spa water in the 18th century. Praised for its medicinal properties, a visit by George III led to the creation of this fashionable spa town. A walking tour will show you the classical terraces, stylish villas in landscaped estates and wide promenades. Shop and relax – The Promenade offers some of the finest shopping in the country. Cath Kidston, the vintage inspired fashion house has a store here and smaller, distinctive shops make up the ‘village’ feel of Montpellier and the Suffolks. Following a major rebuild, Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum re-opened in October 2013 as The Wilson four new floors include two superb temporary galleries for national and international touring exhibitions. Cheltenham’s internationally renowned Arts and Crafts Movement collection has been significantly re-displayed, and the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen now has a retail outlet, The Guild at 51.

12

Gloucester No break in the Cotswolds is complete without a visit to Gloucester, the cathedral city of the Cotswolds. Rich in history, the city boasts a wealth of architectural gems, numerous visitor attractions, a Premiership Rugby team and can truly be regarded as a great English city. Besides the awe-inspiring cathedral, Gloucester’s waterside location and stunning Victorian Docks add an extra special dimension to your visit. So, whether you fancy taking a boat trip, exploring one of the many museums or indulging in some retail therapy at the Gloucester Quays shopping outlet, the city has something to appeal to visitors of all ages. Gloucester is a Host City for the Rugby World Cup 2015, which is the third largest global sporting event. Kingsholm Stadium, the home of Gloucester Rugby, will be a Match venue for four matches in the Tournament.

Cirencester Cirencester is a must see thriving market town at the heart of the Cotswolds with ancient origins. The town was one of the most important places in Roman Britain making the Corinium Museum worth a visit. The town mixes old with new having a vibrant arts centre with workshops, Britain’s oldest open air swimming pool and beautiful abbey grounds. The amazing selection of independent shops and restaurants sit alongside the ‘woolgothic’ church, which dominates the marketplace. Come to Cirencester and experience a variety of markets, independent shops, individual food and incredible history.

Stroud Brimming with independent shops, cafés, galleries and a lovely museum, bohemian Stroud is home to one of the best farmers’ markets in the country and has been described as ‘the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds’. Here you will find an eclectic mix of shops selling everything from fossils to fairies and vintage to vinyl, sitting against the dramatic backdrop of the beautiful Five Valleys. Stroud is known as a centre for contemporary arts, as well as its canal, commons, woollen mill heritage and colourful festivals. Pop into the Canal Visitor Centre or Tourist information Centre to find out more. Tewkesbury Situated where the Rivers Severn and Avon meet, Tewkesbury has a character all of its own and is one of the few places in the Cotswold area where you will see black and white half-timbered buildings. In fact, there are almost 400 listed buildings and this makes it popular with visitors who also enjoy spending time on the riverbanks, visiting the heritage centre and admiring the elegant Abbey, a church on a cathedral scale, which is one of Gloucestershire’s most distinguished buildings. Tewkesbury is great for a day out, short break or a touring base for the Cotswolds. Follow us on Twitter to find out the latest.

13

The Cotswolds area is bigger than many people realise, stretching about a hundred miles from north to south. On any given day, people might be visiting a farmers’ market, garden or gallery, buying antiques, listening to live music, watching world-class sport, messing about on the water or eating delicious, locally produced food. A year round diary of festivals and events, ranging from international-standard to the fun and quirky, brings the Cotswolds alive throughout every season. With a flight time of just under an hour, running twice daily during week days as well as at optimum weekend times, The Cotswolds are within easy reach from Gloucester airport and just waiting for you to explore and enjoy. ersey has the most sunshine in the whole of Great Britain. In the height of summer, this sunshine floods the island for up to 16 hours a day. From the moment it peeks over Mont Orgueil Castle in the East, until it sinks over the ruined Gronez Castle in the West, the sunshine absolutely dominates island life. It is the sunshine that dictates the unique style of potato farming, right down to the children smothered and white with sun cream, making fun-sized replica castles.

Enjoy Jersey!

T

he greatest pleasures of Jersey are the ones that blast the senses with that feeling of being somewhere totally unique. Each summer the States of Jersey issue the ‘Branchage’, a tradition that sees hedges and trees of public and private land trimmed to make life easier for farm vehicles, motorists and recreational cyclists. Whilst this is practical and endearing, it also fills the air with an unmistakable smell of the Branchage. Cycling down a Green Lane with a breeze of sweet and sappy fresh air blowing through your hair, whilst the remaining trees above your head form a canopy, and sunshine dapples on the road ahead. Equally, nothing can beat shuffling your feet in to sand heated to perfection by the long day, and the matching sleepy sense of warmth in your bones. Add a cold beer from the beach bar and a whiff of an over-barbequed burger, the lap of the waves and chatter of your favourite people, and you have an evening you will never forget.

T

he Watersplash bar and nightclub at St Ouen’s bay is the perfect place to spend a Friday night in the summer. Acoustic open-mic music spills to the outside seating area and over the sea wall to the beach below, where surfers take advantage of the quickly incoming tide and the warm evenings. The restaurant offers snacks and meals in unpretentious huge portions and, of course, ice-cold beer or a glass of Rosé. Children are welcome and abundant, pattering barefooted and careless, mini-surfboard tucked under one arm, with brown faces and matted hair. With the airport almost overhead, the frequent rumble of the planes is a distant reminder of a hectic lifestyle that is still going on – somewhere. As the sun sets, any clouds on the sky become a dramatic addition, and the whole scene is drowned in vibrant reds and oranges, promising yet another beautiful day tomorrow.

W

hilst sun, sea and sand can create an idyllic and lazy atmosphere for adults, it fills children with a sense of excitement and curiosity. Jersey offers a setting for young adventurers that is safe and secure, and will keep them occupied for hours. Green Island on the South-East corner provides an endless supply of rock pools just waiting to be explored and a wealth of washed up treasures. Crab fishing, shrimping and fort building, the sea will be creeping over their toes before they have time to get bored. For sandcastles they can play on the clean bay of St Aubin in the seemingly endless sun of the South coast. They even have a choice of the nearby Elizabeth Castle and St Aubin’s Fort as real-life models. Children and adults alike can dig in and try to match the feats of Simon Smith, or the ‘Sandwizard’, who creates amazingly detailed and delicate castles that you simply must not miss. St Aubin is also the hub of water-sports, varying from child-friendly banana boating to extreme wakeboarding. One of the most exciting ways to see this part of the island is at 30mph from a jet ski, squinting through the sea-spray to take in the old fort, but with the security of the safety dinghy bobbing nearby.

25

I

f, the beach isn’t your thing, however, there is endless amusement for children island-wide. Jersey hosts a web of child-friendly cycle paths that will take you past play and picnic areas, and will not be too strenuous for little legs or sunny days. Woodland walks make excellent family outings, and there are streams just waiting to be dammed by the scattered granite rocks. There are wooden makeshift bridges, stepping-stones and rope swings, and for the grown-ups, Jersey’s nature is unique and fascinating. With Hawthorne and Sorrel in abundance it is also possible to spot the rare Sand Crocus on the sand dunes in St Ouen. These shy flowers only open up when the sun’s out, so it’s really no surprise that there are more here than anywhere else in the UK.

I

n the summer months the sun dominates life in Jersey. Whether it’s the way the crops rotate, the exquisite effect it has on the famous potatoes, or simply adding atmosphere to a family day out, the fact that Jersey is the sunniest place in Britain doesn’t just affect daily life here, it creates it. Through tourism and farming Jersey placed itself on the map, and these are solely due to the amount of sunshine. It makes for a life of freedom to do what you want, when you want, safe and clean beaches for children, plenty of ice cream and cold beer when you really need one. Lazy days and warm evenings, it’s the long hot summer that really makes Jersey what it is. JULY - SEPTEMBER 2015 | WWW.CITYWING.COM

Some of our finest food can be found at 3 AA Rosette restaurant Jesmond Dene House, set in a tranquil wooded valley just 1 mile outside the city centre where fresh and seasonal ingredients including organic beef from Northumberland and a selection of fresh herbs, fruit and vegetables from the hotel garden create a fresh take on traditional dishes. For something a bit different why not try Blackfriars which, housed in a Medieval monastery in Newcastle City Centre, is believed to be the country’s oldest restaurant and has won an AA rosette for its old-fashioned fare with a sumptuous modern twist, or SIX, BALTIC’s rooftop restaurant which offers stunning panoramic views of the Quayside served with wholesome, regionally sourced and seasonal modern British cuisine.
