I have seen many powerful stories of sisterhood lately – some that reflect the joy and empowerment it brings, and others that remind us of its quieter, more tender moments of loss.

Theta Phi Alpha recently lost Becky Dixon McLaren, ΑΜ, a Guard of Honor wearer, and Chair of the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation. Becky embodied the heart of Theta Phi Alpha: selfless, devoted, and endlessly giving. She gave her time, her energy, and her whole heart to our sisterhood, showing us that sisterhood is not only about celebrating together, but about lifting one another through dedication, kindness, and compassion.

Who decides Theta Phi Alpha's narrative, what names we go by, how we present ourselves to our campuses and the community, and how we identify ourselves on social media? Our Founders named our organization Theta Phi Alpha in 1912. Since that time, this responsibility has been transferred to the Grand Council.

In addition to our Articles of Association that were filed in 1912, we now have trademarks, a website, social media platforms, an official color palette, and a new Policy on Branding, Style, and Usage of Name.

The Grand Council approved the Policy on Branding, Style, and Usage of Name in December 2024. This policy (found in the National Policy and Procedure Handbook on page 38 in the Member Portal – effective March 1, 2025) states that our members will follow: • Policy on Use of Insignia on page 57; and, • Usage Guide - Definition of Legal Name, Trade

Name, and Trademark.

The Name Usage Guide was updated to include the Fraternity's acceptable names (Theta Phi Alpha and Theta Phi) and unacceptable names (TPA and Theta).

With the Policy on Branding, Style, and Usage of Name, we ask our members, chapters, alumnae associations and clubs, and National Officers to do the following.

• Say and write only the acceptable names.

• Use Theta Phi Alpha, Theta Phi, or QFA on posters,

banners, t-shirts, decorations, etc.

•U pdate documents, folders, accounts, etc., that

write Theta Phi Alpha when you start writing our name.

All of us are responsible for ensuring that we are known as Theta Phi Alpha or Theta Phi. Please be proud to be a Theta Phi Alpha, Theta Phi, QFA!! If we are unwilling to be true to who we are, how can we expect others to call us by our proper name, know who we are, and be true to our values?

Strategic Plan Update

Dear Theta Phi Alphas, Hello from the Grand Council! We held our quarterly meeting in September and would like to provide you with an update on our 2024-2029 Strategic Plan as we work to ensure that Theta Phi Alpha remains a relevant, sustainable organization that provides a place of belonging for all our members.

We are pleased to update you on the progress of our goals for 2024-2026.

To be in a healthy financial state

• Balanced 2027-2029 budgets • Working towards a balanced budget, identifying areas

to level or reduce expenses; financial investments are currently very positive.

• Our partnership with KADYLUXE brings Theta Phi

Alphas beautiful, well-made apparel options that support both the Fraternity and a woman-owned business. KADYLUXE pieces join our Lululemon selections and other brands at shop.thetaphialpha.

• Assess the fundability of operations and programs

for Theta Phi Alpha Foundation Grants • We continue to strengthen synergy between the

Grand Council and the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation through a coordinated effort to re-engage members, enhance connections, and drive fundraising initiatives that allow the Foundation to provide funds to support the membership experience provided by the Fraternity.

• There are powerful opportunities to support our

members that remain unrealized – not because of lack of vision, but because of limited funds.

• Through the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation, donors like

you can directly empower programs that build women of vision and impact. Here are just a few initiatives you support when you make your gift today:  CliftonStrength Assessment for New Members

Help every new member discover and develop her unique talents as part of our member education experience. The cost is $25 per member – about $1,600 annually.

 Collegiate Leadership Catalyst (CLC)

A transformative leadership academy for our collegiate members. At the most recent event, the Foundation covered $14,500, which funded the guest speaker for all three academies.

Collegiate chapters were then responsible for sending 20% of their members at $65 per person.

With additional donor support, we could lift that financial burden entirely – making this highimpact experience accessible to all.  Articulate 360 and Online Learning

Modules for Collegians and Alumnae Fuel our ability to create dynamic, online learning content for members ($1,600 annually). Provide access to professionally developed courses on essential topics such as mental health, financial literacy, resume writing, risk management, and conflict resolution ($25,000 per year/individual courses cost between $3,000–$15,000).

Cultivate a growth mindset and a confident, relevant, and sustainable organization that provides a place of belonging

• Additionally, our partnership with these contractors is

leading to the development of workshops utilizing this data we plan to provide to chapters in summer 2026.

• Identify preferences and challenges across generations • Thank you to our alumnae who completed the 2025 Cygnus

Alumnae Survey. The results of this survey will guide us as we evaluate how we communicate with our members, engage meaningfully with our alumnae, and what drives our members to support our Foundation.

• Utilize the Persona Playbook to hit all high points • During the training of the contractors supporting our

chapters in recruitment, we utilized the Persona Playbook from the Amplifying Sorority research campaign to develop strategies to assist our members in recruiting this generation of women.

All members engaged to their fullest capacity

• Assess/Develop engagement strategies for

various members • In alignment with ongoing efforts to better understand

alumnae engagement levels, the Alumnae Team, along with Grand Council, will collaboratively pilot a new initiative aimed at reaching out to partially engaged alumnae. This initiative will focus on gathering feedback and exploring opportunities to strengthen connections within Theta Phi Alpha and our members.

• Operations: Theta Phi Alpha has the internal infrastructure

to support operations.

Have internal infrastructure to support operations

• Conduct an internal audit of all procedures against the

policies of Theta Phi Alpha to identify compliance • The initial phase of this work has been completed. In

addition to creating a framework to keep track of internal policies, procedures, and operational documents, the staff and volunteers are creating a system to review these based on regular intervals and prioritize updating as needed. This has been a huge task to undertake, and we anticipate the initial review being complete in 2026.

• Develop a single source of truth and location for all policies • In conjunction with the goal above, we have created the

mechanisms to ensure that all documents stored within the Fraternity space follow the appropriate naming convention and are stored in their most up-to-date form for all key players to access.

• Assess efficiency of the current elected volunteer structure • A s Theta Phi Alpha continues to evolve and position itself

for long-term success, we are examining our elected officer model to better align with our strategic and visionary goals.

The Grand Council appointed a special committee, that includes representation of the current elected members of the Board of Trustees, to explore the possible dissolution of the Board of Trustees, with their responsibilities being reassigned to committees and staff. You can read more about this special committee in the August 2025 National President’s Blog.

• Get feedback from key players • A s we have created different processes throughout the

biennium, we have invited the Lead positions within the Fraternity to provide feedback as they oversee the volunteers within the various areas of the Fraternity. This feedback has been invaluable as we continue to build a stronger infrastructure within the Fraternity.

• Needs assessment of larger chapters • In Spring 2025, members of the National Office team

visited our six largest chapters and presented their findings based on the needs assessments of those groups. From

that report, the Fraternity will be implementing a chapter officer structure based on chapter size, with supporting programs and templates created by National Convention 2026, investing in the training of our Chapter Advisors and volunteers, that will roll out in spring 2027, and received vital feedback on the areas of education the Fraternity should invest in moving forward to best meet the needs of our undergraduate members.

• Develop the ideal volunteer appointment process • National Officer appointment committee amended timeline

for Beta testing, which is set to end in January, and reappoints our National Officers through May of 2027.

• In Spring 2027, a new National Officer application will

launch under the supervision of the National Officer Volunteer Appointments Committee (NOVAC).

• Research how other groups structure volunteers • The workgroup is in the final stages of outlining a new

volunteer structure and strategy for supporting chapters that better aligns with the needs of today. The group has prioritized the needs of both alumnae volunteers and chapters to create a cohesive design that is effective for our organization.

The Grand Council will continue to provide updates on our progress after each of our quarterly meetings this biennium.

Much of the initial work will involve strategic conversations and ensuring that the internal system and structure are in place to support our strategic goals.

Theta Phi Alpha belongs to all of us, and we welcome feedback from our members as we plan for the future.

DON’T THROW WHAT YOU KNOW UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT YOU THROW!

In this age of social media, web presence, and anything in between, there seems to be so much more emphasis on pictures, videos, and graphics than ever before. Many of us take pictures, videos, etc., and display them to share with others about how we feel, what’s important to us, and what we are experiencing. Hand signs and other signs are part of this experience. We have seen hand signs in pop culture for many years. Taylor Swift showed us her love by her infamous “heart” sign, universities have “spirit hand signs” such as University of Texas “Longhorn” hand sign, and even folks from Hawaii using the “Hang Loose” hand sign. Back in the day, the “peace sign” and raising the “number one” at sporting events were popular as well. Why have we seen in recent years an emphasis on hand signs in the fraternity and sorority world? Some might say this “Throw What You Know” emergence is because of the need to “show others what is important to us.” Others indicate that it is our need to fit in and be a part of the pop culture.

Some might ask, what does all of this mean to Theta Phi Alpha? Within the past couple of years, Theta Phi Alpha collegians have started “throwing” various signs that represent Theta Phi Alpha in some way.

Historically, hand signs have not been a part of Theta Phi Alpha, but with the recent attention given to “throw what you know,” we decided to ask some of our interfraternal friends, as well as survey our members and get their perspective.

There is very little by way of research as to whether or not hand signs are an official part of any organization. Walter Kimbrough’s research is probably the most thorough and states that hand signs began showing

up in the early 1900s as the Black fraternal organizations were evolving. In the 1970s, hand signs began to emerge in Black fraternity and sorority photos. Still, no research and practically no substantial studies have attempted to illuminate these aspects of Black fraternalism (Kimbrough, 2003).

Michelle Guobadia, member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., shares, “I think it is also important to take a page from culturally based groups as it pertains to signs. We just

don’t let anyone throw them up. I would never ask a famous person or regular person to throw up the sign in a picture with me.

This is reserved for membership. Throwing up the sign is an outward expression that they too carry our values. Not all people do and now in a way they will represent you.”

As multicultural organizations began to evolve in the 1970s, there seemed to be more visible hand signs being displayed. According to Sam Centellas, Past National President of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc., a historically Latino fraternity with multicultural membership, “We really don’t have a policy on hand signs. There are just unspoken rules, I guess, such as only initiated members do it.” He also shares: “Hand signs in National Pan-Hellenic Council

organizations and other cultural groups are not cultural. Doing hand signs is not a part of the Latino culture; it is a pop culture thing.

Our organizations that call it part of their organizations’ culture/history – that is just because they were founded after it became a pop culture thing. The Sigma Lambda Beta hand sign is just because we did what NPHC groups were doing because they are who we connected with when we started. If you re-founded Theta Phi Alpha today, it would have a hand sign, and probably an official one, because it is what fraternities and sororities do now.”

In asking other NPC sororities the evolution of their hand signs, there is again, not a lot of clarity as to when these signs began appearing. Delta Delta Delta began seeing “deltas” in pictures in the early 1960s according to Archivist Coordinator Beth Applebaum. Zeta Tau Alpha, who is seen “throwing a crown,” shares that they began seeing the “crown” sign somewhere around 2007, according to Heather Kirk, Director of Education & Communications for Zeta Tau Alpha. As Spirit Jerseys, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter all began to have a dominant influence, specifically on undergraduates, we began to see creative ways to show their membership in sororities.

The question comes to the forefront: Is this something that will continue or is it just a phase?

Some of the NPC sororities have policies about official publications and the use of hand signs. If you look through most printed, official documents, you will not see a hand sign displayed in pictures. Some of them have said it is fun and okay to do more organically, but they do not believe it is neither part of their history or any part of symbolism that ties back to their founding.

In a survey conducted by the Grand Council of Theta Phi Alpha, the responses were quite mixed. It seemed as though collegians clearly said this is a part of our campus culture and that the Fraternity needs an official sign.

Alumnae seemed to not see it as necessary and almost contradictory to whom we are; they believe that we would be doing it “because everyone else is.”

Call to Action It seems there is a greater question and opportunity that presents itself to us as an organization to consider. Do we know enough about “what we throw” and how can we use this forum as an opportunity to educate?

As an organization and as members of Theta Phi Alpha, this discussion brings to light an opportunity for a Call to Action.

As someone who has spent the majority of my professional career researching, teaching, and trying to influence others to get to know our organizations, I see this as an amazing opportunity. Throughout the years, some of our history, teaching of Ritual, and understanding who we are as an organization have gotten lost. If we are going to say we are proud to be members of Theta Phi Alpha, it is imperative we know what that means. It is time for us to really learn about Theta Phi Alpha, our meaning, our values, and what we promise to do as a result of our commitment to Theta Phi Alpha and one another.

Instead of focusing on an official hand sign, we should focus on educating our members on the meaning behind “what we are throwing.”

There is a lack of attention in many of our chapters as to how Theta Phi Alpha’s Ritual is, what makes us who we are, and makes us different from other fraternal organizations.

Alpha? Not only that we care about our sisters, but also that we understand we took a vow to live out the words of our Creed and the values expressed through our Ritual. It really is more than throwing hand signs; it’s a way of life.

If You Are Going To “Throw What You Know,” Use These Guidelines Theta Phi Alpha does not officially promote or endorse any particular hand sign. However, the use of the “theta” hand sign is highly discouraged and any usage of the symbol should cease immediately.

In the Interfraternal world, Kappa Alpha Theta has historically referred to themselves and been known to others as “Theta.” Since they were founded in 1870, they have a historical right to that distinction. We would not want a hand sign to lead our members and others to then refer to us as “Theta” and misrepresent ourselves.

When used consistently over time, signs and symbols, become property of an organization, and are most likely trademarks

Before you “throw what you know,” ask yourself: Do I know Theta Phi Alpha?

It’s time to look at our branding as the whole picture – what we show one another and others who we are and what we represent.

It’s time to understand that our letters, symbols, and colors were all chosen for a reason and are tied to our values. It is time to distinguish us from other organizations not by a hand sign, but by living the values of Theta Phi Alpha. It is time for us as Theta Phi Alphas to live our values of truth, justice, and loyalty, and represent ourselves and our Fraternity in the way that we promised.

Representing our letters, in any format, is more important than anything we can throw, wear, or communicate. Our actions as members of Theta Phi Alpha represent those letters, words, symbols, and yes, even hand signs. Before you “throw what you know,” ask yourself: Do I know Theta Phi

of an organization. Theta Phi Alpha does all that can be done to protect our trademarks, and we respect those of all other NPC organizations. Organizations are consistently making an effort to protect their brand, and Theta Phi Alpha is no different.

Furthermore, consider the appropriateness of where, when, and how you are throwing a hand sign or any other sign to represent Theta Phi Alpha. It is stated or understood in some chapters that wearing letters where alcohol is present is not allowed or discouraged and yet, members throw a sign with something that represents Theta Phi Alpha in those same environments. This is more about appropriate displaying of our letters than anything else. It comes down to respect and understanding more than a picture.

ZETA – INDIANA UNIVERSITY hosted their annual fall philanthropy event, Pumpkins and Puppies, to support a local animal rescue and raised $10,000. Sisters also celebrated Bid Day and Founders’ Day and participated in Day of Service.

ALPHA EPSILON – ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY competed in lip sync and won first place! In the fall, the chapter enjoyed a sisterhood retreat in upstate New York, where they stayed in cabins, went ice skating, and enjoyed the mountain trails.

ALPHA PSI – UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON participated in a sisterhood retreat and Greek Week.

The chapter hosted their annual sisterhood retreat filled with crafts, laughs, and getting to know each other better. Alpha Psi welcomed five new members this year. The chapter hosted their annual Fall Fest with Phi Beta Sigma, Inc., as well as their annual Phi Hop in the spring, raising over $1,500 for St. Vincent de Paul.

BETA SIGMA – RAMAPO COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY enjoyed spring formal, Founders’ Day, and participated in the Involvement Fair. The chapter sponsored a Family Feud game show to raise money for Hunger and Homelessness, as well as their annual home run derby to raise money for a breast cancer charity.

BETA UPSILON – SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY conducted their annual OneBlood Drive and partnered with the LoveLikeNoah Foundation in honor of a sister’s younger brother who passed away from childhood Leukemia. The chapter also held a beach clean-up for Earth Day.

GAMMA DELTA – ROWAN UNIVERSITY held two successful recruitments, welcoming a total of 30 new members. The chapter hosted its annual Mr. Greek pageant and Pet-a-Pup event, in addition to raising over $2,220 to other local organizations through their philanthropic efforts.

GAMMA ZETA – TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY-KINGSVILLE participated in Greek Games, LULAC Easter Bash philanthropy event, and DIY tucker hat craft sisterhood event.

DELTA BETA – ST. JOSEPH’S COLLEGE was awarded Organization of the Semester by the Student Government Association for the fall. The chapter sponsored a semesterly school supply drive/bookmark making event for the Rachel Quinn Foundation. The chapter also participated in the annual Jones Beach Walk to show support for breast cancer research, and also raised $600 for the cause. Finally, Delta Beta was awarded Greek Life of the Year!

The chapter hosted their annual pageant, Theta Phi’s Phinest, which raised funds for the local Habitat for Humanity. Members enjoyed a sisterhood event to NYC during the holiday break.

AKRON AREA have enjoyed sisterhood and social time. Members attended a meet and greet with the Grand Council along with members from the Greater Cleveland Alumnae Association. The association also held their annual fall luncheon and business meeting at the Spaghetti Warehouse in Akron. Members enjoyed breakfast and a white elephant gift exchange at our holiday breakfast in December and remembered sisters who have entered the Eternal Chapter at the memorial mass in February. This past spring, the association sponsored their 34th annual BONCO event, where sisters from near and far joined them, including Ainsley Robson, AT, from Philadelphia

Area. The association celebrated Founders' Day at the Akron Women's City Club, along several members from Greater Cleveland and a group of sisters from Michigan! Almost 50 sisters gathered to celebrate sisterhood and honor our Founders.

GREATER CINCINNATI joined the Epsilon Chapter for a beautiful Founders’ Day at the Newport Aquarium on the banks of the Ohio River in April.

The association also welcomed Epsilon Chapter seniors to the association at a social gathering following lunch, a tradition that all are so happy has returned!

GREATER CLEVELAND had a busy year! The association held a summer picnic at a local park, a holiday gathering at Spins Bowling, and hosted Grand Council in October at the home of Linda Barath, AX. The association also sponsored a wreath fundraiser, which raised $800. Greater Cleveland members attended CAPA's Spring Scholarship Luncheon and Holiday Happening, created Easter baskets for Laura's Home, and held Founders’ Day with Alpha Xi Chapter at the Aviator.

NORTHEASTERN NEBRASKA had a busy year, with lots of social gatherings and philanthropy events. The association enjoyed shopping and cider taking in Ashland, Nebr., as well as meeting up for lunches and brunches.

Members participated in the association’s annual meeting and also visited a garden in Omaha for Christmas lights and decoration viewing. This past spring, Northeastern Nebraska hosted a luncheon in Wayne where attendees made five tie blankets. Four blankets were given to Alpha Pi to donate to local charities in honor of Alpha Pi’s 40th anniversary. The other blanket was donated as a silent auction gift to help raise funds for the chapter. The association and the chapter had a great time celebrating Alpha Pi’s 40th anniversary celebration.

NORTHERN NEW JERSEY enjoyed a fall meeting. The association also sponsored a “Socktober” philanthropy event in October, where they published an Amazon wish list and asked sisters, family, and friends to donate socks and other toiletry items. Over 300 pairs of socks, hats, gloves, and toiletries were donated for a local shelter.

PHILADELPHIA AREA had an impactful and fulfilling year, marked by growth, service, and sisterhood. The association has been focused on expanding membership, engaging new members, and reinforcing the bonds of sisterhood. Their philanthropic efforts led to a successful fundraiser, raising over $500 for the QFA Foundation. During the holiday season, sisters extended their generosity to Laurel House, a local shelter dedicated to ending domestic violence, by collecting toys, school supplies, winter essentials, and gift cards for those in need.

Throughout the year, members gathered for various events,

including a lively day at Dave & Buster’s, the enchanting Astra Lumina Experience, and a festive trip to Christkindlmarkt in Bethlehem, Penn. The association continues to support the Gamma Psi Chapter by serving on the Chapter Advisory Board and hosting events, like a Welcome Alumnae reception.

Finally, the association continues to connect virtually, hosting monthly sisterhood gatherings for members to connect. If you would like more information, please reach out to the Philadelphia Area Alumnae Association.

PITTSBURGH celebrated Galentine’s Day and collected donations for the Light of Life Rescue Mission. The association celebrated Founders’ Day at the William Pitt Student Union Ballroom with Kappa Chapter. Attendees brought donations for the food pantry at Pitt to support local collegiate basic needs (to learn more, click here). Congratulations to Dr. Alexandra Kreps, K, on her induction to the Sapphire Circle and Maddie Marinelli, K, on receiving the Senior Service Award. It was an additional pleasure to welcome Dr. Angela Seegel, AE, National Vice President-Alumnae, at Founders’ Day. The association recently held and alumnae luncheon and welcomed a new alumna initiate, Lauren Franko! Theta Phi Alpha has appointed Samantha Clark, E, as National Vice President-Programming. Sam joins the Grand Council, bringing knowledge of our collegian chapters and recruitment practices. Sam was initiated into the Epsilon Chapter (University of Cincinnati) in 2003 and has spend the last 10 years volunteering with collegians and, most recently, as the Program Manager for Emerging Chapters and Recruitment Advisor at Epsilon. Her numerous alumnae roles also include Emerging Chapter - Chapter Manager, Recruitment Specialist, Chapter Advisor at Epsilon Chapter, and President of the Greater Cincinnati Alumnae Association.

Sam is a recipient of the Wilford A. Butler Change Maker Award from the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values for advancing the sorority experience at the University of Cincinnati, as well as a QFA Compass Points Award winner.

Sam is a preschool teacher with a passion for play-based learning and resides in Northern Kentucky with her husband, two daughters, and their pet bunny. She can still do Epsilon’s Michael Jackson dance routine from her first year.

This year, the Foundation is thrilled to announce that the Greater Cleveland Alumnae Association and Alpha Xi Scholarship, championed by Linda Barath, AX, has officially reached endowment level. Linda’s dedication to education and her tireless commitment to the Foundation made this milestone

While we celebrate this incredible achievement, the Foundation is already setting its sights on the future with the Educational Technology Endowment. This developing fund will provide the tools and resources that help our members learn, lead, and stay connected. From digital leadership programs, storing our learning modules, and virtual training sessions to increased access for collegians and alumnae, this endowment will help technology remain a bridge – linking sisters across campuses, states, and generations.

Every contribution – large or small – brings us closer to ensuring that Theta Phi Alpha members have the opportunities they need to thrive in a changing world. Together, we celebrate the generosity that made the Greater Cleveland Alumnae Association and Alpha Xi Scholarship possible and look forward to the bright future the Educational Technology Endowment will create.

HONORING LEGACY, WELCOMING NEW LEADERSHIP Theta Phi Alpha Foundation experienced a meaningful transition in leadership this fall following the passing of Chairman Becky Dixon McLaren, AM. Becky’s dedication to the Foundation and her unwavering belief in the power of Theta Phi Alpha sisterhood continue to inspire our work. Her legacy of service and compassion remains deeply woven into the Foundation’s story, and she is fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of serving alongside her.

Following Becky’s passing, Jennifer Dunn Jacob, K, has been elected as Chair of the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation. Jennifer previously served as Director of Donor Development and brings both passion and experience to her new role.

The Foundation also welcomes Kathryn “Kitty” Sweeny, AX, as Director of Scholarship & Programming. Kitty’s long-standing commitment to Theta Phi Alpha, including her years of service in educational and advisory roles, will help guide the Foundation’s scholarship initiatives into the future.

Rachel Feldberg Flansburg, DA, now serves as Director of Communications, while Val Thomas, AN, continues her dedicated service as Treasurer.

Together, the Foundation's leadership team remains united in honoring Becky's legacy while advancing the Foundation's mission to empower Theta Phi Alpha members through education, service, and sisterhood.
