MESSAGE FROM our PRESIDENT Welcome to the first digital edition of The Compass! We have moved to a digital publication due to the rising costs of printing and mailing a hard copy of the magazine, as well as allowing better access. A digital version allows for more features, including color, animation, and direct links to resources. Since members tend to keep their email addresses updated more than their home addresses, we hope to maintain better contact and keep our membership records current and accurate. Our staff and volunteers continue to work diligently to create a wonderful magazine for you. Thank you to everyone that made our summer virtual Officer Leadership Training (OLT) so successful! We began working on this event months prior to its start. The National Office Staff and volunteer Programming Team are the key to making these events fun and educational. As we continue our journey to being a more inclusive organization, OLT included speakers on topics such as “It starts with Me: Reframing DEIB” [diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging], “Applying a Racial Equity Lens to Your Theta Phi Alpha Experience,” “Allyship is a /Verb/,” “Cultivating a Culture of Belonging in a Divided World,” and “Justice, Not Just Us: Inclusive and Mindful Practices Beyond Hashtagging ‘#BLM’.” The Theta Phi Alpha Foundation made it possible to include several keynote speakers and the event was bookended by our own Past National President, Dr. Mari Ann Callais, AB. Read on for more details from our summer 2021 OLT. In the last of this biennium, I want to acknowledge the twists and turns that we have all experienced. I want to thank my fellow Grand Council members, National Officers, and National Office Staff for staying missionfocused and working toward the best interests of Theta Phi Alpha. We couldn’t do it without you! Theta Phi Alpha continues to overcome, whether that be pivoting to a virtual Officer Leadership Training, updating our processes to be more tech friendly, or offering The Compass in a digital format. 2021 OFFICER LEADERSHIP TRAINING
T
his year’s Officer Leadership Training (OLT) would have been Theta Phi Alpha’s first summer OLT event, after moving from the past seven years of being a winter conference in January. After the postponement of National Convention in 2020, OLT would have been a great way to celebrate being together, in-person, for the first time since the last OLT in January 2020. For the safety of our members, Theta Phi Alpha’s in-person OLT was moved to a virtual conference, and Hubb, a virtual conference and event management platform, was utilized.
Hubb allowed OLT to take place without skipping a beat. Attendees could view their daily schedule, including speaker topics and biographies. Attendees included Chapter Presidents, Vice Presidents, Treasurers, and Recruitment Chairmen. Those position holders spent Friday in trainings and meetings about their respective positions. An alumnae option was opened for Saturday, and registered alumnae, along with the other attendees, could choose from multiple development block topics during the day. In between sessions or during breaks, attendees could check out the Exhibitor Hall or visit the QFA Foundation Room or Networking Lounge. Attendees were encouraged to post on social media about “What Does Leadership in Theta Phi Alpha Look Like to You?” Congratulations to those winners of the challenge: Hannah Iverson, AW; Orla Casey, DH; Nicole Maucieri, BS; Lauren Graham, AW; and, Megan Endress, AW! Attendees also received some surprises in the mail! A t-shirt, notebook (from the QFA Foundation), popcorn, stickers, and other small items were mailed to everyone prior to OLT. It was so fun to open the boxes together at Thursday night’s Welcome Session! Thank you to the many sisters and friends who participated, facilitated, or shared their wisdom as a speaker. Please continue to read on about the speakers and their respective programs. This year’s OLT lent itself to some amazing developmental block topics!
Pushing Past The Pandemic and Engaging Our Members in New Ways presented by Mari Ann Callais, Ph.D, AB “What if we could get sorority right?” was just one of the questions that Mari Ann posed. Cutting through the layers of red tape and get to the heart of the matter, talk real talk, challenge each other, and seek real changes are what will aid our newest members and make the sorority experience one of pure sisterhood and transparency. Mari Ann challenged sisters to create change for a more engaging sorority experience. It Starts With Me: Reframing DEIB in the Panhellenic Sorority Experience presented by LaShatá Grayson, The Parallel Agency LaShatá Grayson shared a new understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) and how it impacts/will impact the sorority experience. Her presentation explored how members can take responsibility and influence their chapter culture to be rooted in DEIB and see what inclusion looks and feels like. Creating Confidence presented by Tina VanSteenbergen “Confidence is a journey, a long and at times treacherous hike. One with hills, valleys, twists, turns, and no map. While it’s not easy, finding authentic confidence is possible, if we work as a team.” Tina’s presentation shared the journey of finding true and authentic confidence as women and as a team (or chapter). While confidence has often been an expectation of women, it takes a village to support each other and support our confidence!

OLT DEVELOPMENT BLOCK PRESENTERS Check out a few of our many development block presentations! Thank you to all of our OLT presenters! Applying a Racial Equity Lens to Your Theta Phi Alpha Experience presented by Antoinette Cummins, BG: Darcy-Tell Morales, GH; and, Nathali Zamora, GP Sisters examined and received tools to apply a racial equity lens to their Theta Phi Alpha experience, helping them to be critical, forward-thinking and equitable leaders for social justice. Through self- and organizationalawareness, sisters discussed the roadblocks and examined how they could advance racial equity in a variety of Theta Phi Alpha experiences (from chapters, to alumnae associations, to leadership or volunteer experiences, etc.) or even in their personal lives. With calls for more social justice-oriented thinking, members need to know how to do this work and what tools they can rely on to do this work in an informed way.

Sisterhood Takes Work Let's Have the Hard Conversation presented by Dr. Mari Ann Callais, AB, Theta Phi Alpha Past National President Being a Theta Phi Alpha means you engage in a relationship with one another. It means it takes work - not just officers, or big sister and little sister relationships, but being a friend and sister takes work. This is just one of the many topics that participants spoke about during this session. Attendees discussed concepts around the expectations of sisterhood, as well as how to improve relationships and hold one another accountable while still being supportive.
Cultivating a Culture of Belonging in a Divided World presented by Margarita Perez, Ed.D. Brene Brown's "Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone" was the inspiration for this session, which spoke about why human connection brings people closer together. How to Navigate Difficult Conversations with People You Care About presented Nicki Rowlett, The Parallel Agency This development block hit on the many aspects of having difficult conversations, including learning how to manage emotions in these situations, reflecting on how to best prepare for difficult conversations, and identifying strategies to help members navigate the conversation.

QFA INTRODUCES NEW CHAPTER ACCREDITATION PROGRAM By Ashley Crews, BU, Director of Collegiate Services
T
heta Phi Alpha is excited to announce a new program designed to assess the strengths and challenges of our chapters. First debuted at the July 2021 Officer Leadership Training (OLT), the chapter accreditation program assesses our chapters using five areas: ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE CHAPTER OPERATIONS HOLISTIC WELLNESS MEMBER DEVELOPMENT PHILANTHROPIC/SERVICE DEVELOPMENT The goal of this program is to celebrate the successes of our chapters while providing directed assistance in the areas we recognize improvement is needed. Many campuses around the country have started to shift to accreditation programs for assessment purposes and use these programs to establish whether a chapter is recognized on campus. We modeled our program off of many of our campus partners’ programs in hopes of achieving consistency. We also worked to ensure that we incorporated our Standards of Achievements, “The 19 Pearls,” into our new program since our goal for the future is to build a new awards process based on this accreditation program. The program is designed to be simple to use, combining already established reports and the collection of documentation for other chapter experiences using Google Drives. Every chapter will have access to their own drive specifically for their program where they will
retain copies of all of their documentation to review at the end of the year with the accreditation review committees. Unlike other programs, Theta Phi Alpha is piloting this in its first year with all chapters rather than just a selected few. Feedback will be collected in the form of surveys, town halls, and focus groups. After we receive feedback and determine the success of the program or what changes need to be made, we will go into the following academic year having made all necessary adjustments. This new accreditation program will act as a great benefit to the chapter at both a local level and national level. Having a better understanding of where a chapter could use additional support while also recognizing the great work they’ve been doing will allow us to strategically improve the health of our chapters. Sharing Sisterhood in a New Way True North Napa Valley, Theta Phi Alpha’s official wine brand and club, celebrates the Fraternity’s history and ideals.
B
randon Chaney, a Sigma Chi from Indiana University 1993, was sharing a glass of wine with his pledge brother when the conversation turned to discussing how cool it would be if Sigma Chi had its own wine brand. Not just the kind where the words “Sigma Chi” or the coat of arms were are on the label, but where the Fraternity’s history and ideals are celebrated. “Every Greek organization has such amazing history and with all that is going on with our lives post-college, we forget about how instrumental the Greek experience has been in our lives,” Chaney says. “What if we could create a wine brand that celebrates the history of our Greek organization, and did it in a subtle and sophisticated way.” Chaney is the proprietor and CEO of Fairwinds Estate Winery in California’s historic Napa Valley.
He purchased the winery back in 2015 after selling his public utility business. Fairwinds was the fourth winery established in Napa Valley after prohibition and located in the beautiful northern realm of Napa along the Silverado Trail in Calistoga. He pushed the idea of a wine brand for his fraternity to the back of his mind until COVID-19 shutdown his hospitality business at the winery. “Our winery was dependent on visitors to the winery as we only sell our handcrafted limited production wines directly to consumers through our exclusive wine club,” Chaney says. With the challenges of the pandemic, Chaney approached the leadership of Sigma Chi about a wine brand and club to give back to the fraternity. He designed a program for Sigma Chi in which 20% of the sales were given back to the fraternity. Sigma Chi approved the concept – the first ever by a Greek organization, and it was launched in mid-2020 with huge success. It really helped bring the brotherhood together while the pandemic caused everyone to be stuck in their homes.
Greek life and organizations are currently under attack by many organizations that don’t understand the how valuable they are to not only the college experience, but the network of alumni and alumnae that support us post-college. Chaney reached out to the leadership of Theta Phi Alpha and wanted to develop a special wine program for our sisterhood. Realizing a passion project. Chaney views the wine industry as an artist passion and it’s been an interest of his since childhood. His father is a professor emeritus of tree physiology at Purdue University, and his mother, an artist, ran the overseas study programs for the university’s continuing education department. Often while growing up, the family traveled to Europe for sabbatical leaves and the overseas study programs. The European wine culture intrigued Chaney, and he was fascinated by the years on the wine bottles. “I started collecting wine as an eight-year-old thinking I would save it for when I was 30,” he says. “Of course, when I finally opened it, the wine tasted [terrible] because I didn’t store it properly. But that’s kind of where the seed was planted for my interest in the wine industry.” In college, Chaney studied finance and art history, and after graduation he started working for General Electric in nuclear energy. T HE At 25, Chaney and his COMPASS college roommate founded a telecommunications public 13 utility company in California after the state deregulated the FAL L 2021
Accreditation Program industry. Chaney recently had the opportunity to sell the business and that left him free to pursue other interests. In 2015, Chaney and his college roommate, a Phi Delta Theta at Indiana University, purchased Fairwinds Estate Winery. “You don’t necessarily get into the wine business to make money. It’s more of a passion project. It’s creating something special in an artistic way,” Chaney explains. “I wasn’t necessarily an expert in producing wine, but when I bought the winery, what came along with it was an amazing team. I brought what I love and leveraged a lot of their expertise, and I’ve learned a lot along the way. I didn’t know anything about telecom when I started a public utility either, but I quickly came up to speed and maybe brought a different perspective by doing some innovative things. Now I feel like this is an opportunity to bring some innovative ideas to the wine industry.”

Unbeknownst to him at the time, he would also bring an innovative alumni and alumnae engagement and fundraising method to the Greek community and the Theta Phi Alpha sisterhood with its first official wine brand and club. A special experience for club members. In the beginning, neither Chaney or his roommate thought Sigma Chi or any other Greek organizations would be interested in partnering for a wine brand. “The challenge is you don’t want to associate alcohol with undergrads. Theta Phi Alpha is an undergraduate experience, and it’s an amazing part of the college experience, but it’s also a lifelong membership,” Chaney explains. “Theta Phi Alpha’s wine brand isn’t designed for the undergraduate community. It’s designed to bring the sisterhood together post-graduation and is a way for them to celebrate the amazing history of what Theta Phi Alpha is all about, its ideals, and if there’s a way we could also leverage that to raise money for a specific cause within Theta Phi Alpha to help out the organization, then that’s a win-win.”

The fire department had attempted to save the Calistoga, California, winery as the Glass Fire burned around the property, but when the blaze began closing in, firefighters had to give up and leave.

However, disaster struck the winery in late 2020. A symbol of sisterhood. The Glass Fire, which the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has listed as the 10th most destructive wildfire in state history, began burning on September 27, 2020 in northern California and engulfed Fairwinds Estate Winery the following day. The fire department attempted to save the winery, but when the blaze began closing in, firefighters had to give up and leave. “The day after the fire, I got a call from the fire department. As they were driving off, these guys looked
back and notice the American flag flying above the flames,” Chaney says. “So they drove back into the forest fire, got out and saved the American flag. They were like, ‘We’d really like to present this back to you’. It was unbelievable. When I went [to the winery] the next day, everything was destroyed.”

QFA BADGE REMINDER
A QFA should always guard her badge. Upon the death of a member, the badge should either be buried with the member, or returned to the National Archives via the National Office. Should a direct legacy of the deceased member be elected to membership, she may request the badge as her own from the National Archives.
QFA is still recovering badges of deceased members from auction sites and various other outlets online. The Pearl Protectors Committee spends numerous hours locating lost badges. If you are interested in joining the committee, please fill out the National Officer Interest Form. echnology – it can be frustrating and it can be wonderful. As we started 2020, we didn’t know what an integral place that technology would take in keeping us connected. Our use of technology turned into reliance to get through our daily lives. For many of us, we changed our shopping habits as well as how we work, socialize, and collaborate. We learned how versatile and adaptable that we are, both individually and collectively. Theta Phi Alpha was an early leader in adopting technology. An early foray into the world of technology was created by a group of sisters who met regularly in Chicago to create Theta Phi Alpha’s database, a wealth of information that represents our sisterhood. Gloria Nieses, Z, worked for a major magazine. She applied her professional skills with her team to create membership numbers for each sister that reflected their chapter number and order of Initiation. Team members included Jean Cusack, B, and Betty Comer McDaniel, T. This numbering system served us well for many decades. Flashing forward to today, the National Database is a partnership between the Fraternity and the Foundation. Membership information is accessible to sisters through the membership portal at my.thetaphialpha.org. The portal offers our members the ability to directly reunite with sisters, find them in your geographic area, or even recruit a mentor. The National Roster has been recently added to the portal. Keeping your contact information updated, especially your email address, will help you to access The Compass and other timely Theta Phi Alpha updates. The portal offers a convenient, secure spot to pay your Alumnae Dues or make a contribution to Theta Phi Alpha Foundation. Additionally, you may even have a

friendly competition with fellow members over how many “badges” you have achieved. The portal also provides a window to educational opportunities, such as for new members, recruitment, and our National Officers. Theta Phi Alpha Foundation has provided funding for a new tool used for module creation to support general educational opportunities. Printed resources are also available and the library of information is regularly expanding. Technology is also used for connecting with Theta Phi Alpha’s members and contributors. Prior to the pandemic, social media had expanded to nearly 70% of the population – a huge impact given social media was virtually non-existent when our youngest collegians were born. Social media outlets provide a great opportunity for connecting with the membership. As joiners, some sisters are on all of our channels, while others only engage on one or two networks. Just like the everlasting chain, we love how many ways that technology links us together.

orth Royalton, Ohio, is honoring its brave citizens, showcasing banners of active and retired military members throughout the city. Theta Phi Alpha is privileged to have one of our own sisters from Alpha Xi, Cleveland State University (CSU) featured – Rachel Garcowski.
It was in Women Studies class, during my first semester at CSU, when I met Rachel. Like many of the other students in class, Rachel was happy to participate in classroom discussions, showcasing her strong, independent, feminist characteristics. As a first-year student, I looked up to Rachel. She was a business student (like me) and balanced active military duty along with academics. Rachel was very cool and tough. Towards the end of the semester, she causally mentioned Theta Phi Alpha. What’s this? “You’re in a sorority?!” I asked, naively. Until then my perspective of Greek life was Legally Blonde and Rachel did not come across as someone who would rush “Delta Nu.” Her Army strong vibe is exactly that of Theta Phi Alpha. Justice. Loyalty. Honor valued over wealth. Rachel was in the Army National Guard from 2006-2012, and she
fulfilled a tour of duty in Afghanistan for a year in 2010-2011. From CSU, she earned both her bachelor’s degree in operations management (2010) and master’s degree in management, labor, and relations and human resource management (2012), all while being an active Theta Phi Alpha member. When she was the Chapter Treasurer, women paid their dues and chapter records were up-to-date! This only exemplifies Rachel’s determination. Post-college and retired military life, Rachel has served the federal government with Department of Justice and Department of Veterans Affairs for the past eight years. She represents her town for her service to our country. Personally, I’m grateful she recruited me to join the Theta Phi Alpha fraternal bond of resilient women like her (though I can’t pretend that I’m half as brave, independent, or strong-willed as Rachel). Thank you for being My Sister, My Friend, My Hero.
