Natural rim: 6,223’ Lake Tahoe sits at an average elevation of between 6,223’ and 6,229.1’. The top 6.1’ of water is controlled by the dam in Tahoe City and holds up to 744,600 acre feet of water.

How the lake was formed

About 3 to 5 million years ago, the valley that would become the Tahoe Basin sank between parallel fractures in the Earth’s crust as the mountains on either side continued to rise. A shallow lake began to form in the resulting valley.

Roughly 2 to 3 million years ago, erupting volcanoes blocked the outlet, forcing the lake to rise hundreds of feet above its current elevation, and eventually eroded down to near its current outlet.

Between 1 million and 20,000 years ago, large masses of glacial ice covered the west side of the Tahoe Basin. Current geologic theory suggests an earthen berm (moraine) left by a receding glacier near Olympic Valley acted as a dam, causing the lake level to rise and then draw down rapidly when the dam catastrophically failed. Between

7,000 and 15,000 years ago, a four-mile segment of the West Shore collapsed into the Lake causing a massive submerged debris avalanche, widening the Lake by three miles and creating McKinney Bay.1 The Tahoe Basin is mostly granite, with little topsoil, and therefore few nutrients have washed into the lake to promote the growth of algae and other organisms that make water murky.

As well, 40 percent of the precipitation falling into the Tahoe Basin lands directly on the lake. The remaining precipitation drains through the decomposed granite soil found in marshes and meadows, creating a good filtering system for water.

Urbanization of the Tahoe Basin has eliminated 75 percent of its marshes, 50 percent of its meadows and 35 percent of its steam zone habitats. About 85 percent of all wildlife in the Tahoe Basin use these habitats.

About the lake Lake Tahoe is located in the states of California and Nevada, with two-thirds in California. It is fed by 63 streams and two hot springs.

The Truckee River is Tahoe’s only outlet and flows from the dam in Tahoe City east through Reno and eventually drains into Pyramid Lake in the Nevada desert.

However, water releases are not permitted when the lake surface level falls below the natural rim at 6,223.’ The lowest lake level on record (measured since 1900) was 6,220.26’ on Nov. 30, 1992.

The Lake of the Sky appears blue in color as other colors in the light spectrum are absorbed and blue light is scattered back.

Lake clarity The University of California, Davis, operates the Tahoe Environmental Resarch Center, which monitors, among other

things, the clarity of Lake Tahoe. Clarity has been measured since 1968 and was first recorded at 102.4’.

The waters of Lake Tahoe were clear to an average depth of 69.2 in 2016. The lowest average depth on record was 64.1’ in 1997. Lake Tahoe is losing clarity because of algae growth fueled by nitrogen and phosphorus.

Lake Tahoe’s discovery The first recorded discovery of Lake Tahoe by white explorers was on Feb. 14, 1844, when John Charles Frémont and Charles Preuss spotted the lake from atop Red Lake Peak. The lake went through several names before it was officially named Tahoe in 1945.

Tahoe is a mispronunciation of the first two syllables of the Washoe’s word for the lake – Da ow a ga, which means “edge of the lake.” 

his winter the program now known as Achieve Tahoe celebrates its 50th anniversary for providing adaptive sports programs to people with disabilities.

It was started in 1967 by Jim Winthers, a World War II veteran and ski school director. His desire was to use skiing as a way to help Vietnam veterans learn how to cope with injuries they had sustained in the war. Last year, 650 people enjoyed more than 2,000 days of instruction with Achieve Tahoe and for many, that first time gliding down a mountain covered with snow was a dream come true.

“We build health, confidence and independence for people with disabilities,” says Haakon Lang-Ree, Achieve Tahoe’s executive director. “Our goal is for students to reach the highest level of independence that each person can reach.”

People come to Achieve Tahoe with a range of disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy, vision impairment, Down syndrome and those caused from brain or spinal injuries.

“Each person has unique characteristics.

We look at each individual and figure out the best plan for that person,” says Achieve Tahoe program director Michael Hunter.

According to Lang-Ree, “We access what their goal and vision is to make the experience something they can appreciate.

For some, getting out the door and getting on the snow may be success. For others, the sky is the limit.”

In addition, Achieve Tahoe also hosts military camps for wounded vets. During the four- to five-day camps, the vets not only ski and snowboard, but also take a shot at laser biathlon and snowmobiling.

“We are hoping they get an experience that will help them get back into society.

We hope it is something they can continue to pursue with their family,” says Lang-Ree. Hunter adds, “We are really trying to break down barriers at the camps.

Hopefully, it is community building and relationship saving. We’ve had several 8

couples say that it has saved their marriage.”

Pam King is one of the 200 volunteers who work with Achieve Tahoe. She has participated in both the ski program, as well as the summer program at Donner Lake where participants kayak, paddleboard, tube and canoe.

“Every disability and every experience is different,” says King. “You use different techniques to motivate people. It is very rewarding to be part of their special day.”

Scott Behrens came to the program through his son Bryan and the generosity of his friend Steve Berardo, an Achieve Tahoe volunteer. Bryan has cerebral palsy and Berardo sponsored his first lesson and got the ball rolling.

“Steve kept the wheels turning for two years, but then had a back injury and

couldn’t coach anymore. I was skiing with Bryan, so I volunteered,” says Behrens.

Behrens initial motivation when he became an instructor last year was to get Bryan skiing so well that the family of five could ski together. While his teaching is bringing Bryan closer to that goal, Behrens is also finding fulfillment in helping all of his other students.

“It was really a positive experience offering people opportunities to do things they haven’t done before. I had a student with cerebral palsy and we found the means for him to ski independently.

He got to be able to ski and he had that twinkle in his eyes,” says Behrens.

Behrens remembers an older woman with multiple sclerosis. She had never skied before, but he was able to get her out on the snow in a special walker/ski combination.

“She was able to glide for the first time in her life,” Behrens says. “The next day was one of the nastiest days of the winter; I thought she wouldn’t come, but there she was ahead of schedule with the biggest smile on her face. She skied in the gusty winds and cold blowing snow and was ecstatic.”

“They often talk about what people with disabilities can’t do. But to see someone independently do it. That is a big thing.

For me it has been hugely rewarding,” says Behrens.

Achieve Tahoe is a nonprofit organization that survives on the support of those who participate, as well as through fundraising, donations, volunteers and sponsorships. Major fundraisers in 2018 include the Ability Bash on Feb. 10 and the Ability Challenge on April 14, Squaw Valley Art, Wine and Music on July 14 and 15, and Foam Fest on Sept. 1. 

Support the groom Incline Village, Nev. This winter, Nevada Nordic is preparing to groom a cross-country ski trail at Mountain Golf Course. The course will be narrow, 8- to 10-feet wide, and designed to ensure no adverse impact on the fairways.

The organization is looking for financial support to purchase a small SnowCAT to groom trails after heavy Sierra storms.

One has been found with a trailer and the cost is $27,300. With an additional $2,500, the track-setter for classic tracks can be purchased, too. Nevada Nordic’s board has agreed to match the first $10,000 of donations. The nonprofit organization also intends to use this equipment at the Mount Rose area once it has secured the appropriate permits. Donations by check can be mailed to Nevada Nordic, P.O. The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling Services are teaming up to make giving to Christmas Cheer easier than ever. The LTVA’s Drive and Drop for Christmas Cheer takes place until Dec. 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drive through the Visitor Center parking lot at 3066 Highway 50, South Lake Tahoe, and drop donations of food or toys into the bins provided by South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling. Cash donations should be brought into the Visitor Center.

South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling Services is also having its annual Community Holiday Food & Toy Drive until Dec. 8. Leave canned/packaged food or toys curbside on the regular collection day or drop off at South Tahoe Refuse, 2140 Ruth Ave., during business hours. | (530) 541-5255.

Truckee Community Christmas, a nonprofit organization, has provided food items, grocery store gift cards, toys and coats for more than 25 years to individuals and families during the holiday season. It depends on the generosity of locals and will benefit hundreds of Truckee families, teenage moms and their children, and lowincome or homebound seniors.

Look for food collection barrels at Safeway and SaveMart. Collection bins for new, unwrapped toys can be found at banks, real estate offices, schools, homeowners’ association clubhouses and businesses around Truckee. Warm, clean, gently used winter coats can be dropped off at Church of the Mountains and Tahoe Forest Church. Gratitudes is coordinating senior gift donations.

In addition, help is needed to sort and pack donated items at the SELS school gym on Dec. 21 and 22. The food drive needs assistance from volunteers, too.

Update holiday lights Truckee Donner Public Utility District hosts the annual LED holiday light exchange while supplies last during regular business hours at the TDPUD office.

Customers can bring in a copy of current TDPUD electric bill along with up to three strands of old, incandescent, holiday lights. TDPUD will replace them with up to 60 feet of white or multicolored LED lights. These energy-efficient holiday lights can save between 80 to 98 percent on energy costs versus the old-style, incandescent lights. “I told him I was searching for apprenticeships and I was willing to go anywhere to learn how to make shoes,” Leffler says.

“He told me, ‘No shoemaker in their right mind has any time to train an apprentice.

It takes five to 10 years of experience to become proficient. You’re going to learn more working for the biggest shoe repair operation you can find than you will apprenticing with an independent shoemaker like me.’ ” So Leffler found the biggest shoerepair operation west of the Mississippi at Dardano’s Shoes in Denver, Colo., hoping to learn all he could.

“It’s a family-owned-and-operated, shoe-repair facility that’s been around since 1938,” he says. “I worked with a Mexican guy named Alberto Pallares who didn’t speak a word of English. He and I alone were responsible for 30 to 50 pairs of shoes a day. I learned most of my technical skills from Alberto. He was so good with his hands, so fast, so crafty.”

–Kevin Leffler months, Leffler took a journeyman’s approach to shoemaking. He studied with distinguished craftsmen across the country, from Frank Beneduci of San Francisco to Perry Ercolino of Doylestown, Penn., who is known for making shoes for President Obama and boots for Leonardo DiCaprio’s role in the movie “Titanic.”

“I learned from the best,” says Leffler.

“I took something different from each one and moved on.”

Then one day Leffler was at lunch with Woodward when his mentor offered him a job. “ ‘You’d be a fool not to come work for me,’ he told me,” Leffler recalls. “I was the first employee he’d ever officially hired.

He took a chance with me that he never took with anyone else. That’s when I took a jump and stepped into the world of fashion and exotics. I went from being a cobbler to luxury shoemaker.”

Leffler opened his own shop in July 2016 at Lakeview Plaza in South Lake Tahoe offering bespoke shoes, custommade belts and wallets of leather, alligator, string ray and other exotic materials.

“Bespoke means ‘made to measure and custom made for one,’ ” he explains. “The whole concept is really more about service.

If the belt doesn’t fit, send it back.”

Every shoe starts with a customer’s measurements. The shoemaker then makes a form of the client’s feet out of

hard plastic. This is called a last. Leather is stretched and formed over the last and reinforcements are added. Finally, soles are installed before the shoes are hand painted and burnished with a selection of custom dyes.

“When you get a pair of Leffler Shoes, you’re going to have a one-of-a-kind product from any color of the rainbow,” says the craftsman.

Leffler teaches an Introduction to Leatherworking class at Lake Tahoe Community College where he believes there has been a rejuvenation of interest in lost arts such as shoemaking.

Now a master shoemaker himself, Leffler recently expanded his product across the lake into Tahoe Taylord men’s clothing and alterations store at Cobblestone Center in Tahoe City.

f Kevin Leffler has walked a long and winding road to get to Tahoe City, at least he’s done so in a darn good pair of shoes.

“I was working as a cobbler and Western leatherworker at Carter’s Boots and Repair in Bozeman, Mont., when I started making my own designs,” says the South Lake Tahoe craftsman. “Having come from the San Francisco area originally, I quickly learned I was interested in fashion and classic styles considered timeless.”

Leffler was taking shoemaking classes and designing his own line at home after work when one day he called up master shoemaker John Allen Woodward of Boulder, Colo. “He gets up to $10,000 for a pair of cowboy boots so I thought this was a good place to start,” Leffler says.

Woodward ever so kindly gave him some sound advice.

Gre at Reno Fire of 1879

he fires in northern California were the worst in California history. More than 6,000 homes were destroyed and more than 40 people lost their lives. Last winter’s record precipitation led to a bumper crop of vegetation that dried to a crisp during this past summer’s excessive heat. A strong wind event and a spark was all it took for fast-moving flames to destroy whole neighborhoods. Because wild fires raged over the West this year, it’s a good time to look back at how fire has shaped local history.

Fire was always enemy No. 1 and a constant danger to many early western communities. Wooden buildings made tinder dry by sun and heat, wind-prone locations and sparks from crude potbelly stoves frequently combined to generate catastrophic fires. Truckee looks the way it does today because fire has swept through its downtown district on several occasions, each time destroying buildings from an earlier era and forcing new construction.

Major fires swept through Truckee’s residential and commercials districts in 1868, 1871, 1875, 1881 and again in 1883 — each time changing the face and architecture of this pioneer mountain community.

Brick buildings replaced wood and fire equipment was upgraded.

Truckee has had catastrophic fires, but compared to the Great Reno Fire of 1879, the town might consider itself fortunate.

Similar to Truckee, Reno, Nev., is located in a wind-prone area. The phrase “Washoe Zephyr” that Mark Twain made famous in his book “Roughing It” was coined for the strong local wind that blows down the east canyons of the Sierra Nevada. Not only did the Washoe Zephyr wreak havoc 18

with miners’ tents and cabins on the Comstock, as soon as the first Catholic Church was built in Virginia City, Nev., it was torn from its foundation and smashed to kindling by this devilish wind.

Early on Sunday morning, March 2, 1879, the Zephyr was blowing so hard in Reno that pedestrians found it difficult to walk. At 5:55 a.m. the city’s fire alarms erupted in warning. Immediately, a dread came over the community. It was everyone’s worst night-mare to fight a fire in such a wind.

Sparks from a poorly constructed stovepipe had set aflame some stacked wood behind the Railroad Hotel near Sierra Street and Commercial Row. Mrs. Ann Hogan was the first to see the fire.

She ran to her back yard where a barrel of wash water stood near the burning wood, but either through excitement or weakness the elderly woman was unable to lift it. She yelled until her sons arrived, but they quickly realized they couldn’t stop the rapidly spreading flames. Her sons ran to the firehouse and rang the emergency bell as a call to action.

Minutes later hundreds of bleary-eyed citizens were rushing to the scene, but by then the wind had fueled the small blaze into an inferno. Soon another hotel on Commercial Row had flames licking at the roof. Women, as well as children, helped with bucket brigades and even the ostracized Chinese and American Indians manned the hand-pumped engines.

Unfortunately, before even one bucket of water was thrown on the blaze, the Reno Lumber Yard on the other side of town was catching fire from wind-blown sparks.

Pushed by the powerful wind, the wall of fire raced across the city. Firemen on the scene brought their hoses so close to the flames that their hair was burned, but the Zephyr blew the water into an ineffective spray before it reached the building.

Reno’s fire chief was knocked unconscious by a falling board, but his men needed no order to fight this blaze. It was a battle of desperation.

Pushed by the powerful wind, the wall of fire raced across the city. Firemen on the scene brought their hoses so close to the flames that their hair was burned, but the Washoe Zephyr winds blew the water into an ineffective spray.

The howling wind fed the flames and scattered burning cinders throughout the city. It soon became clear that the town was doomed, so residents ran to save what few personal things they could grab from their homes and businesses. Firemen remained at their posts and could only pray that their own houses might be saved. Blowing out of the southwest, the fierce gale spread destruction to the northeast of Reno. Burning embers were blown out to ranches nearly 3 miles away.

Haystacks, outbuildings and barns caught fire; it was all ranch hands could do to keep the main residences from burning down. During the peak of the firestorm, burning shingles and other fragments were blown onto the sides of buildings.

The sheer force of the wind held the glowing embers there until a hole was burned through the side of a structure and it was set on fire.

Passengers arriving on Central Pacific Railroad’s morning express stared out the

windows at the huge clouds of smoke and flames from miles away. As the trains got closer to Reno, the fire’s roar and loud shouting among the fleeing citizens brought to mind scenes from Dante’s “Inferno.” The firestorm burned through wood, brick and iron at will. So-called fireproof buildings withered under the fiery assault. The thick walls and iron doors absorbed so much heat that the merchandise inside burst into flames.

Most businesses were a total loss. Banks, pharmacies, law offices, saloons and hotels were gutted. The flames spread so quickly many homeowners escaped with only the clothes on their backs.

Heroic exertions by firefighters managed to save a few of the city’s landmarks.

The Baptist Church, Masonic Temple and the Odd Fellows building were only slightly damaged.

It wasn’t long before help arrived from Reno’s neighbors. Men and equipment from Truckee, Boca, Virginia City and Carson City came by train, wagon or horseback to join in the epic battle, but it was too late. Women brought cooked food, blankets, clothing and condolences.

By sunset the fire in Reno was out. There was little left to burn. The devastation was swift and nearly total. Ten square blocks were smoking ruins and five lives were lost. Hundreds of homes and scores of businesses were in ashes. Total damages exceeded $1 million, but only about 25 percent of the property was insured.

Despite the tremendous losses, the rebuilding of Reno began the next day.

The ashes had barely cooled before they were shoveled away and new foundations were built.

The Nevada Legislature introduced a bill appropriating $10,000 to aid the homeless. It was on the governor’s desk and signed into law in 20 minutes. FIRST SKIRTS ON SKIS A great tribute to early California ski racing was that women (and sometimes children) were included in the competitions. In the mid-19th Century, during the Victorian Era when women couldn’t vote and were generally disenfranchised socially, politically and economically, women in the primitive Sierra mining camps north of Truckee were encouraged to join in the fun.

In 1867, Lotti Joy shot down La Porte’s 1,230-foot-long race slope at 49 mph to set the earliest women’s speed record.

he lights drop. Five soldiers stand alone on a darkened stage. As the music begins they take each other’s hands and come together as one.

“Hold on to me … cause I’m a little unsteady,” X Ambassador’s Sam Harris sings over a lone synthesizer.

The soldiers float in slow motion, clinging on desperately as they are pulled apart by mysterious, unseen forces. They march in jump step to the beat, then fall together in the shape of a boat, rocking back and forth to the building rhythm like brave, young Americans preparing to land at Normandy.

They release hands and burst into dynamic movement; guns cock, snipers fire and hands go to hearts for the courage to leap.

Throughout the choreography of Kassidy Commendatore’s “Stand Alone Together,” there is a sense of the dancers being pushed and pulled by forces far greater than themselves. Both the drastic circumstances and the soldiers’ uncontrollable emotions move violently and unpredictably as if they were mere leafs courageously drowning in the cruel current of a war’s whirlpool.

There is now an effort to bring the performance to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, La. “If you love me … don’t let me go,” Harris sings during the piece and then suddenly to the thud of the bass drum, a soldier goes down.

The others quickly surround her, but soon rear back. Their faces covered in agony, they sway in helpless grief. Blowing forlorn kisses in time, the soldiers twirl away across the stage as their friend is pulled away offstage.

Another goes down. Her beloved comrade lunges for her, yet a moment too late. Undone by anguish, her mates hold her up until, flailing and stumbling, she reemerges in heroic flight, only to fall herself in a flash of light.

The remaining duo spins and slips, flips and tumbles as their lost comrades rejoin them on the sides of the stage now dressed in white. In the concluding sequence of pirouettes and lifts, they come together once more, grunts and the fallen angels dancing in perfect harmony. The last two kneel in embrace about to give up their final breath when the angels pull them back up to give them hope. In the end, the survivors limp offstage arms round each other staggering into the darkness.

Commendatore’s interest in the “Band of Brothers” led her to travel in their footsteps during the summer before her senior year at Truckee High School.

“I was inspired to choreograph this piece by the brave soldiers who fought in World War II,” says the choreographer. “I have looked up to them for many years for their strength, humility, bond and courage.

I was thinking about how to honor them, so I decided to create a dance about what

soldiers go through, how they have to come together and their journey through war.”

She is now a freshman majoring in human physiology at the University of Oregon where she continues to turn to dance as a touchstone for her very being.

“InnerRhythms has impacted my life in ways I cannot explain,” she says. “They have taught me the meaning of discipline, loyalty, commitment, respect, humility, perseverance, confidence and so much more. They have given me so many opportunities to grow not only in dance, but in life and as a person.”

Founded in 2002, InnerRhythms is a nonprofit dedicated to support youth through the performing arts. In the spirit of “Stand Alone Together,” executive director Elizabeth Archer has decided that part of that mission includes making their classes accessible to everyone regardless of financial status.

The school currently has two active fundraising campaigns for $10,000 each in order to raise money for their scholarship fund and the troupe’s upcoming trip to New Orleans. There they will perform at the National WWII Museum for the closing ceremony of the Leadership in American History Symposium and Tour led by “Band of Brothers” author Stephen Ambrose.

“People say dance is an extracurricular activity,” says Archer. “But when you immerse yourself in something like this, you go to a different place where you appreciate things more. That was what was so remarkable about watching the kids go through the process [of creating “Stand Alone Together”] and having the outcome be so powerful. Our job is to raise young leaders and citizens here. The second part is dance. So, we’ve had to stand by our principles and our values. Anybody who wants to dance can dance.”

“It’s awareness through movement. It’s a moving meditation. It’s a place to go where you can truly be yourself while exploring movement and helps you to have a deeper understanding of yourself,” explains Polly Triplat of Sierra Conscious Dance.

Triplat creates an atmosphere and experience through music, movement and presence in each of her classes. Triplat has been studying and teaching movement for the past 20 years. She incorporates

During a session people might also delve into and explore the four hungers, which include solitude, connection, belonging and spirit, as part of each ongoing series.

“People spend time in those realms with the group,” says Triplat. “There are a lot of

According to Triplat, participants enter the room with music playing. “The first part of the class is a time to warm up the body — a self-exploration of sorts — guiding the exploration and attention to what is here in the moment. I use body anchors like focusing on our feet, for example. We explore spatial awareness of different body parts, grounding elements of what we feel.

“The second part of the class is about exploring personal space, partnerships and groups. It’s all about relationships and offering a safe container to practice how to be in relationship with ourselves and others,” she says.

She claims when we are ungrounded, we tend to lack focus, we become unsure, clumsy and imbalanced in our daily lives. The classes enable participants to understand and find a sense of grounding by offering tools that help people communicate without words and understand other people’s body language while enjoying the process of moving.

Often people are intimidated walking into a room and dancing. “This helps people to explore how they might be intimidated

things going on that might help them feel connected and understand themselves better.”

The guided classes are intended to create a space for a sober, drug-free experience.

It’s an intentional dance for authentic, creative expression.

Instructor Breeze Cross offers a Bowls and Beats class that incorporates the healing tones of alchemy crystal singing bowls with movement medicine inspired by an eclectic mix of world beat music. A typical class offering may include breath work, mantra, toning, meditation, stretching and dancing.

Instructor Lauren Martin offers Dancing Freedom/Health Rhythms. Martin, aka AhMuse, incorporates many of the arts into her classes including drumming, dance, voice, theater and coloring.

Classes range in participation from five to 25 people. Participants have an opportunity to set up art installations and create sacred space that foster additional creativity based on the theme of the class. The classes are held at Tahoe Yoga and Wellness on the first and third Fridays of the month and The River School Farm in Reno, Nev., on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. All classes are from 7 to 9 p.m.

There is a $15 suggested donation, but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Participants dance barefoot and should wear loose clothing they can move easily in and bring water.  For more information, visit sierraconsciousdance.com.

A species in the onion family, the garlic’s relatives include the mighty shallot, the delicious leek and the charming chive. Garlic is the third most popular spice behind salt and pepper.

If you are feeling like you might be getting sick, garlic can help reduce the

Garlic aioli is delicious on steamed artichokes. Garlic escarole and white beans are a fabulous vegetarian main course.

In a jar, mix apple cider vinegar and water.

Press the garlic cloves in a garlic press and add to the liquid. Add honey — I prefer raw local honey. Shake the mixture. Drink two shots a day, one in the morning and one in the evening, until you feel better. It’s strong and intense, so be warned.

Here are some stellar producers at a variety of price points. At the extremevalue level, Washington is the place to go.

A yummy version is 14 Hands for less than $10 that has enough stuffing to be a bona-fide food wine. Charles Smith’s The Velvet Devil Merlot brings even more complexity for a few dollars more.

The next three wines are from Napa, which still grows significant amounts of Merlot, but blends most of it with Cabernet to sell for far more money. This means the wineries are literally turning down real moolah because of their devotion to Merlot. Markham makes a classic valleyfloor version with berry flavors that also bring soft tannins and a dusty silky component that usually comes only at higher prices. However, their bottling can be had for about $25.

here is sweet irony in the final scene of the 2004 movie “Sideways” when the main character Miles, crushed by hubris, sullenly drinks his prized 1947 Cheval Blanc after spending most of the story slamming Merlot and posing as a wine expert. He doesn’t realize that Cheval Blanc and most Bordeaux is primarily made from Merlot.

Pathetically, the American public is equally ignorant and has shunned Merlot to the point where thousands of acres have been ripped out and replaced with Pinot Noir and Cabernet. Oh, what a shame because some California regions have the terroir that makes for world-class Merlot that explodes with pure dark fruits, cocoa dust, bold but silky tannins and a combination of deliciousness and structure rare in the wine world.

ecently, I gave you the recipe for a quick and easy napoleon (available at TheTahoeWeekly.com). Here is another dessert that most people would never think of making, even though it is a fast and easy dessert to make. It is prepared after the entrée is eaten, so you know it can’t be that hard to make.

There are no exotic ingredients and, in fact, the ingredients needed for the main dessert are things that most people have in their kitchen. Of course, there are a few things you can add to spruce up the Zabaglione, but as far as the ingredients, the list contains three items.

Eggs, sugar and marsala are the only things needed for the Zabaglione. You can substitute sweet sherry or even white wine for the marsala if you need or want to, but those are the three things you will need to make your dinner guests say, “Wow.” The preparation is easy, but will take a bit of whipping in its final stage. The first part of the mixing can be done in a mixing machine if you have one, but then you will want to finish the process over a pan of simmering water on the stovetop.

So, what is Zabaglione? It is a light and frothy egg mousse served warm, so do not make it ahead of time. Also, since the three ingredients are egg yolks, sugar and marsala, it is a rich dessert despite how light and frothy it appears.

Serve it in a wine glass or maybe some type of fluted ice-cream dish. Although it can be served alone, it is often accompanied by some type of cookie or fruit.

An almond cookie would work well or fresh berries.

There is also my personal favorite, which does involve a little extra work beforehand. I like to pour a few drops of Chambord into the bottom of the glass and then fill it half full with a chocolate pudding. This will have to be done in advance to give the pudding time to set.

Then make the Zabaglione when you are ready and garnish it with a couple of lady fingers that have had one end dipped in a dark rum. Place the lady fingers into the side of the dessert.

Zabaglione is a light and frothy egg mousse served warm.

The next time you are looking for that rare dessert to finish off your meal, whether you want to serve it alone, with cookies or fresh berries or chocolate pudding and lady fingers, let the others clear the table and give Zabaglione a try. It will be thick and pale. Move this to a mixing bowl and place over a pan of simmering water on the stovetop. Add the marsala and whip until it is frothy and warm. This can take up to 10 minutes, so be patient. Pour into glasses and serve.
