How the lake was formed

About 3 to 5 million years ago, the valley that would become the Tahoe Basin sank between parallel fractures in the Earth’s crust as the mountains on either side continued to rise. A shallow lake began to form in the resulting valley.

Roughly 2 to 3 million years ago, erupting volcanoes blocked the outlet, forcing the lake to rise hundreds of feet above its current elevation, and eventually eroded down to near its current outlet.

Between 1 million and 20,000 years ago, large masses of glacial ice covered the west side of the Tahoe Basin. Current geologic theory suggests an earthen berm (moraine) left by a receding glacier near Olympic Valley acted as a dam, causing the lake level to rise and then draw down rapidly when the dam catastrophically failed. Between

7,000 and 15,000 years ago, a four-mile segment of the West Shore collapsed into the Lake causing a massive submerged debris avalanche, widening the Lake by three miles and creating McKinney Bay.1 The Tahoe Basin is mostly granite, with little topsoil, and therefore few nutrients have washed into the lake to promote the growth of algae and other organisms that make water murky.

As well, 40 percent of the precipitation falling into the Tahoe Basin lands directly on the lake. The remaining precipitation drains through the decomposed granite soil found in marshes and meadows, creating a good filtering system for water.

Urbanization of the Tahoe Basin has eliminated 75 percent of its marshes, 50 percent of its meadows and 35 percent of its steam zone habitats. About 85 percent of all wildlife in the Tahoe Basin use these habitats.

About the lake Lake Tahoe is located in the states of California and Nevada, with two-thirds in California. It is fed by 63 streams and two hot springs.

The Truckee River is Tahoe’s only outlet and flows from the dam in Tahoe City east through Reno and eventually drains into Pyramid Lake in the Nevada desert.

However, water releases are not permitted when the lake surface level falls below the natural rim at 6,223.’ The lowest lake level on record (measured since 1900) was 6,220.26’ on Nov. 30, 1992.

The Lake of the Sky appears blue in color as other colors in the light spectrum are absorbed and blue light is scattered back.

Lake clarity The University of California, Davis, operates the Tahoe Environmental Resarch Center, which monitors, among other

things, the clarity of Lake Tahoe. Clarity has been measured since 1968 and was first recorded at 102.4’.

The waters of Lake Tahoe were clear to an average depth of 73.1’ in 2015. The lowest average depth on record was 64.1’ in 1997. Lake Tahoe is losing clarity because of algae growth fueled by nitrogen and phosphorus.

Lake Tahoe’s discovery The first recorded discovery of Lake Tahoe by white explorers was on Feb. 14, 1844, when John Charles Frémont and Charles Preuss spotted the lake from atop Red Lake Peak. The lake went through several names before it was officially named Tahoe in 1945.

Tahoe is a mispronunciation of the first two syllables of the Washoe’s word for the lake – Da ow a ga, which means “edge of the lake.” 

Kids in the Creek South Lake Tahoe

O

ver the years I’ve hiked on the trail out of Echo Lakes about a half dozen times and each visit was memorable.

There was the backpack trip with my daughter when on the way back from Lake Aloha a lightning storm necessitated a mad dash to the Echo Lakes water taxi.

Or Day 11 of a through hike around the Tahoe Rim Trail when the sandwich and ice cream I procured from the Echo Chalet felt like the greatest meal ever. And then there were those times while hiking the entire Tahoe Rim Trail that I stopped for glorious swims from Upper Echo Lake’s boat taxi dock that were the highlight of my day.

While my visits to Echo Lake have been part of epic journeys, this jaunt along the lakeshore also makes for a damn fine out-and-back 5-mile hike, or perhaps even better, a 2.5-mile hike followed by a boat ride back to the start.

Tahoe Rim Trail begins at the dam on Lower Echo Lake near the Echo Chalet store. A short climb leads to a switchback where there is a view with South Lake Tahoe in the background and the remains of the 2007 Angora Lake fire in the foreground. Ten years ago, it burned more than 200 homes and came fairly close to Echo Lakes. Fortunately, there is a huge band of granite between Echo Lakes and the fire. Speaking of granite, this place is a paradise for granite lovers. You will be walking on it for almost the entire hike.

Leaving the fire view, the trail traverses with gentle ups and downs along the granite slope. Views of Lower Echo Lake, Ralston Peak and flagpole-topped Flagpole Peak open up quickly. In addition to the spectacular natural surroundings, what make this hike special are the rustic and charming summer cabins scattered atop the granite. They make me feel as if I am in Tahoe 1940 instead of Tahoe 2017.

In about 2 miles the trail reaches the western edge of Lower Echo Lake where an especially gorgeous group of summer homes enjoy acres of smooth granite leading from cabin door to water’s edge.

Now the trail makes the short jaunt over to Upper Echo Lake, where a half mile of walking brings you to a trail junction.

Here those who are more ambitious can continue straight ahead for a half mile of rocky uphill to Tamarack Lake, just across the Desolation Wilderness boundary, or another 3 miles of steep rockiness to the shore of large, shallow and spectacular 10

Wilderness, and will salivate at the thought of joining you in the boat.

The taxi not only cuts out the hike, but is also a fun jaunt over the water of the two lovely lakes. A narrow stream cuts between the two lakes and late in the season the water level in this connection can drop too low for travel. So, if the taxi is a requirement, you may want to call in advance to make sure the taxi is running.

The resort closes around Labor Day, as well, so get out and do this hike and taxi now while you still can.

Once you return to the trailhead, try a sandwich and an ice cream at the Echo Chalet. While I can’t promise it will provide the satisfaction I received after hiking for 11 days, it will taste pretty fine on a warm Sierra day.

TO GET THERE

Lake Aloha. Those who are just in it for a short hike and the views, however, can turn left at this junction and take the quick jaunt to the shore of Upper Echo Lake where a pier and small beach awaits you.

At the pier you have two options.

But first, give your brain a rest and get into Upper Echo Lake. Now, refreshed and lounging on the dock you can more effectively review your options: return the way you came for a 5-mile hike and swim or take the Echo Chalet water taxi back to the trailhead. The fare is $14 each way; a minimum of three people is needed to make the jaunt. The water taxi is a popular option, however. There are sure to be tired backpackers, who have been carrying big packs for miles through Desolation

Lower Echo Lake sits at the top of Echo Summit. Take State Route 50 from South Lake Tahoe toward Sacramento.

One mile past Echo Summit, turn right onto Johnson Pass Road. Take this road 0.6 mile to a junction, where you will turn left on Echo Lake’s Road. Follow it about a mile to a large parking lot that sits above the Echo Chalet. A wilderness permit is not necessary for the hike to the end of Lower Echo Lake. If you get adventurous and decide to head to Tamarack Lake or Lake Aloha, a Desolation Wilderness day-use permit needs to be picked up at the trailhead. orthstar California Golf Course is part of a large development with housing, skiing and a village with food and shops. Luckily, a great deal of effort has also been spent on the golf course. It opened in 1974 and was designed by wellknown, West Coast architect Robert Muir Graves. He had an unusual piece of land to work with and as a result created two

Every hole at Northstar has its own character, but to me the most exciting hole is the short par 4 11th hole. different nines: the Meadow Nine and the Mountain Nine. Each has its own obvious flavor, but don’t think of one being better than the other — only different. The size of the greens is similar and the bunkering is similar, but as the Mountain Nine winds through the trees and up and down the mountain it plays much narrower. Actually, the Meadow Nine is far from wide open because long rough will gobble up any wayward shot.

It’s a good idea to pay close attention to the scorecard/pro-tips card; many of the holes require a precise tee shot and the layout of the hole may not be obvious from the tee. It is not long, stretching 6,820 yards from the black tees and a playable

6,322 yards from the blues. Typically, you will have mostly short-iron, second shots on the par 4s and middle-iron, tee shots on the par 3s.

Every hole at Northstar has its own character, but to me the most exciting hole is the short par 4 11th hole, measuring 340 yards from the black tees and 330 yards from the blue tees. It is a slight dogleg left with two tiers: a fairway that narrows quickly at around 175 yards, then a downhill second shot of 140 yards over a deep ravine to a smallish elevated green.

An accurate tee shot of around 200 yards is a must to make the second shot easier, but even with a short iron it is still a scary undertaking.

Designing a good resort course can be a difficult task because it must be interesting enough for an outside golfer to come and visit. On the other hand, it can’t be too hard for a resort guest who may be a new player or one who tees it up twice per year.

ince the 1860s, Lake Tahoe has attracted unique and unusual characters, independent thinkers and entrepreneurs. Some made a living by providing services for tourists and visitors; others invested their wealth in Tahoe to build estates and summer resorts, often as an escape from the city. A few, who had little money, left their legacy in colorful quotes and remarkable stories.

CAPTAIN DICK BARTER Near South Lake Tahoe is a spectacular, glacially carved basin known as Desolation Wilderness. Towering above shattered cliffs of granite and glacial debris looms Dick’s Peak, elevation 9,974 feet, standing stoic and solitary. The obdurate mountain is a fitting monument to Captain Richard Barter, a man whose remarkable feats of survival have withstood the test of time.

Dick Barter was a retired British seaman who shipped into Tahoe when he was hired to caretake a summer retreat built at Emerald Bay in 1862. Barter’s solitary life there was full of hardship and danger, especially in winter. For 12 years he lived the life of a recluse. The old sailor possessed a fatalistic spirituality. He expected death to come by drowning, avalanche or grizzly bear attack.

Despite his eccentric lifestyle, the venerable sailor gained a reputation as an easygoing old salt that enjoyed the taste of bourbon whiskey. If Barter craved drink and

conversation during the snowbound winter, he rowed his boat to the saloons in Tahoe City. In January 1870, while returning from a drinking session on the North Shore, a sudden gust upset his rowboat 2 miles off Sugar Pine Point. He struggled frantically in the cold water and finally succeeded in getting back into the boat. The weather was intensely cold and deadly hypothermia was setting in, but Barter furiously rowed against the biting wind shouting, “Richard Barter never surrenders!” The old captain’s grim determination saved his life.

Half-frozen, he rowed into Emerald Bay at daybreak, but his ordeal was far from over.

He suffered severe frostbite in his feet and couldn’t walk, so he tied pillows to his knees to get about. While he recovered, he crafted a 7-foot miniature model of a man-o’-war steam frigate. When he could walk again, he also built and rigged a 4-ton sailboat that weighed 8,000 pounds. No one had visited him throughout the winter so when a San Francisco reporter showed up that summer to interview him Barter told him the story.

When the journalist showed disbelief, Barter pulled out several frostbitten toes that he had amputated and then salted to preserve as a memento and evidence of his fearful night on Lake Tahoe.

Captain Barter wasn’t the only screwy personality who lived at Lake Tahoe.

George Whittell, an eccentric, playboy millionaire from California showed up in 1929 to buy land for development. Born into a wealthy San Francisco family in 1881, Whittell was the sole heir to his parent’s millions. “Junior” knew early in life that he wasn’t going to be a respectable businessman like his father and he charted out a wild lifestyle that would distress his parents and shock their staid upper-crust friends.

As a rebellious teenager, Junior fell in love with circus animals and ended up following the Barnum and Bailey Circus around the country. He attended a slew of colleges and universities, but never graduated from any of them. When he was 22, he married a young chorus girl, but his father paid to have the union annulled. Shortly after, Whittell eloped with a British dancer, but his new wife filed for divorce just two years later.

During World War I, Whittell was commissioned a captain in Italy, a rank he maintained as a civilian. In 1919, he married Elia Pascal, a French debutante, who would remain his wife for the rest of his life. But after a few happy years together in California, Whittell’s frequent sexual dalliances convinced Elia to spend her time in Paris and the couple never had any children.

Captain Whittell was fortunate to be born into wealth, but he had a lucky streak, too. Shortly before the 1929 stock market crash, he liquidated $50 million in stocks and bonds. To protect his assets, he moved to Nevada to escape state income taxes. On arrival, he purchased about 29 miles of spectacular real estate on Tahoe’s East Shore.

Whittell planned to develop large resorts and hotels at both Sand Harbor and Zephyr Cove. Fortunately, his vision to build the Sand Harbor Hotel and Casino, complete with 200 cottages and an aerial tram to a proposed ski resort above Incline Village, never made it past the drawing board. The aborted plans spared these two beautiful stretches of beach and shoreline at Lake Tahoe. Whittell then built the quirky Thunderbird Lodge, a three-story French chateau that overlooks the lake’s famed blue water. He also hired legendary marine architect John Hacker to design a unique Tahoe yacht. Sleek and stylish, the “Thunderbird” was powered by dual 550-horsepower aircraft engines and could reach 70 mph.

Stories abound about Whittell’s allnight poker games in the Thunderbird Lodge’s Card House with celebrities such as baseball great Ty Cobb, who had a cabin at nearby Cave Rock. Parties at the Captain’s summer playpen were relatively rare, but they were extravagant. Whittell had weeklong affairs with scantily clad showgirls from Tahoe casinos. Drinking was rampant and one underground room was used for smoking opium. Each summer, Whittell flew in his pet lion Bill.

SABOTAGE OF THE “CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO” On Saturday evening, Aug. 12, 1939, Southern Pacific Railroad’s “City of San Francisco” streamliner streaked across the Nevada desert. Outside it was sweltering hot, but passengers aboard the air-conditioned train took no notice as they enjoyed dinner, cocktails or cards. Suddenly the train derailed at 70 mph near Harney, Nev. The forward locomotives slid off the steel rails, barreled across a bridge over the Humboldt River and then plowed through the wooden track ties and rock ballast before coming to a stop upright. The violent destruction lasted less than 60 seconds, but the worst train wreck in Nevada history killed 24 and injured 121 others. Only 31 escaped unhurt. SP officials blamed sabotage and launched a massive manhunt, but no one has ever been charged with the crime.

Zephyr Cove, Nev. The 34th annual Tahoe Tennis Classic will attract more than 200 competitors in an expanded array of divisions from July 27 to 30. This all-doubles tournament is introducing a 6.0 category for men and women. There are 14 divisions; most are based on ability level with two related to the combined age of players. The nonprofit Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation runs the tournament, which consists of women’s, men’s and mixed doubles.

Tahoe City The Tahoe Yacht Club hosts the Woodie Over-the-Bottom rally on Aug. 14. Participants must be ready to collect race instructions on the water at 8:30 a.m. off Tahoe City Marina where boats will return for the finish. There will be a separate start for all wooden boats beginning at 9 a.m. Other Tahoe Yacht Club members will join the fun and run the same course following the Woodies’ start so that they parade together. Separate trophies for both divisions will be presented at the clubhouse during a light brunch and award presentation.

Gearing up for biking Plumas County Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship hosts the 22nd annual Downieville Classic from Aug. 3 to 6 and registration is open now.

The 29-mile course follows a rugged Gold Rush-era route that departs Sierra City (elevation 4,100 feet), climbs to the crest of the Sierra Nevada (elevation 7,100 feet), and plunges 5,200 vertical feet into Downieville. There are still a few cross-country slots open. The festival for spectators includes music from The Nibblers, Ron’s House of Big Air river jump, Cozmo’s Wild Island, bike expo, log pull, prize drawing and rides with Yuba Expeditions.

The Downieville Epic with the TNT Trail Day is from Aug. 19 to 20 at Packer Saddle and the Grinduro is from Oct. 7 to 8 in Quincy.

Stampede road closures Truckee The Bureau of Reclamation is working on Stampede Dam. The work necessitates a road closure from the Stampede Meadows Road and Dog Valley Road intersection to the Emigrant Group Campground entrance on Dog Valley Road. Public access to Stampede Reservoir will be along Hobart Mills and Dog Valley Road. This road closure is expected to last through October 2018, when the project is planned to be complete. Additionally, the Emigrant Group Campground will be closed for the 2017 season and re-opened for the 2018 season. Open to the public Truckee For the first time in a century, Webber Lake will be open for public camping in 2017. Webber Lake, 17 miles north of Truckee, was acquired by the Truckee Donner Land Trust. WESTERN STATES TRAIL Strenuous | 11.6 miles RT This is a challenging and exhilarating ride (sometimes referred to as Three Bridges Trail) that will afford you a fun downhill swoop and beautiful mountain views. You can ride it either way, starting on either side of the Midway Bridge between Alpine Meadows and Olympic Valley off Hwy. 89.

MR. TOADS WILD RIDE Moderate-Strenuous | 6.2 miles Mr. Toad’s heads mostly downhill from the Tahoe Rim Trail with several options for making a loop. The upper section of this trail is much more technical than either section of the TRT and has many big drops and sections of nothing but rocks. There is also a huge stair step section that comes up on you quickly.

Strenuous | 14 miles There are several mountain biking trails off the Flume Trail, but if you follow the Flume Trail the whole way you will be rewarded with magnificent views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountains. The Flume Trail rises 1,600’ above the East Shore of Lake Tahoe. At the end of the Flume Trail, there is a 3-mile, 1,600’ descent down to Tunnel Creek Station on Hwy. 28. It is a moderately difficult ride at 7,000’ to 8,000’ in elevation with more than 1,000’ of climbing and 4.5-miles of single track. It has several steep sections.

Moderate | 15+ miles Offers rolling, wide, single-track through high desert, winding through sagebrush, seasonally wet meadows and Jeffrey Pine forests. North of Truckee on Hwy. 89 to Donner Camp picnic area. If too wet, proceed 2.5 miles on Hwy. 89 to Prosser Creek Bridge pullout. 15 miles to Stampede, but can continue on to other areas.

MOUNT ROSE TO SPOONER LAKE Strenuous | 20 miles The beginning of this beautiful section of the Tahoe Rim Trail is at 8,700’ above the Sheep Flats (aka Tahoe Meadows) on Mount Rose. The first part of the trail parallels the highway and then descends through the meadows and briefly joins the Ophir Creek trail. Look for Rim Trail signs, then after a quarter-mile up and to the right of the Ophir Creek trail (don’t stay on the Ophir Creek Trail). After a 300’ climb out of the meadows, you begin to contour your way to the Tunnel Creek road. At 9 miles, you will come to the Tunnel Creek Road. Follow it a half-mile with the Flume Trail on the right. Continue straight for an 800’ switchbacking climb. Near the top of the climb, consider taking the vista trail to the Sand Harbor overlook.

Once at the top, the trail winds down past the Marlette Peak campground to Hobart Road. The Rim Trail past this point is closed to bikes, so your only path back to Spooner is along this road to the right and down to Marlette Lake.

A short, but tough climb leads out of the Marlette basin and then it is downhill back to Spooner Lake. Mind the speed on this descent due to heavy equestrian and hiking use.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE

COLDSTREAM VALLEY Easy to moderate | 6 miles RT This loop offers a mellow ride offering views of the Sierra Crest, has nice flowers in the spring and circumnavigates a series of ponds. From Donner Pass Road, take Coldstream Road, which alternates pavement and dirt. After a short climb up the old terminal moraine of the glacier that once filled this valley, the valley opens up. Proceed on this road until you come to private property signs at the last pond, then turn left on the dirt road and return on the east side of the valley. Park outside the white gate on Coldstream.

California Department of Fish and Game holds Free Fishing Days on July 1 and Sept. 2, with Nevada’s Free Fishing Day on June 10.

LAKE TAHOE Fishing is closed in Lake Tahoe within 300 feet of its tributaries and upstream to the first lake from Oct. 1 to June 30.

Lake Tahoe is open year-round from 1 hour before sunrise to 2 hours after sunset. No fishing is allowed within 300 feet of the mouth of any stream. Most Sierra lakes are open all year.

No fish may be used for bait or possessed for use as bait in Lake Tahoe, Fallen Leaf Lake or Donner Lake, unless taken from that lake. Live bait in these lakes is limited to: Lahontan redside shiner, Tui chub, Tahoe sucker, Lahontan mountain sucker, Piute sculpin and Lahontan speckled dace. Chumming is illegal. There is a two-fish limit on Mackinaws, and a limit of five fish on Lake Tahoe.

Fishing for Rainbows from the shore is best May through July. If you’re on the North Shore, the Kings Beach and Lake Forest areas are planted throughout the summer. Cave Rock on the East Shore of the lake is a good location for Rainbow and Brown.

TAHOE REGION

SPOONER LAKE

Spooner Lake is managed as a trophy fishery at Spooner Lake State Park on the East Shore. It is open all year for catch and keep, with a limit of five trout. Rowboats, inflatable rafts and float tubes may be used, but no motorized boats.

UPPER TRUCKEE RIVER The Upper Truckee is fed from the waters of Meiss Country south of Highway 89 in South Lake Tahoe.

Fishing is good in the deep pools during the early part of fishing season.

TRUCKEE REGION

BOCA RESERVOIR Boca is good for early and late shore fishing and is popular for trolling for Rainbow, Brown and Brook.

DONNER LAKE Brown and Rainbow can be expected when shore fishing with good spots at the boat ramp or the west end of the beach. Mackinaws can be found in the shallows during the early season.

MARTIS CREEK RESERVOIR Rainbow, Brown and Lahontan cutthroat trout. Catch and release only using artificial lures with barbless hooks and no bait. No motorized boats.

PROSSER CREEK RESERVOIR

ECHO LAKES Just a short drive off of Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe, try both boat and shore fishing here. Shore fishing is usually good from the dam. Please respect the rights of private property and homeowners around the lake.

FALLEN LEAF LAKE The best fishing is from a boat, but occasionally fish can be taken from the shore with a good cast. The lake is a short walk from Fallen Leaf Lake Road or Fallen Leaf Campground.

Fishing within 250 feet of the dam is illegal.

SAWMILL POND A stocked pond for children 15 years of age and younger.

Adults are allowed to help children fish, but not allowed to fish themselves. The pond is located 1 mile south of South Lake Tahoe along Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

Among the best trout fishing in California, especially for Rainbow and Brown.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR Holds a large number of trophy class Rainbow and Brown trout. Shore fishing nets Browns and Rainbow, with Kokanee when trolling.

TRUCKEE RIVER At Lake Tahoe’s only outlet in Tahoe City, fishing is closed year-round from the dam in Tahoe City to 1,000 feet downstream. Certain other sections of the Truckee are closed year-round. Check fishing regulations.

Fish the deep pools during the early part of the season.

Best bets are to fish the section of the river between Tahoe City and River Ranch (Hwy. 89 and Alpine Meadows Road).

Donner Lake | Fishing has been fair to good.

his year marks the 33rd Tahoe Truckee Fly Fishers (TTFF) annual barbecue and fundraiser on Aug. 12. TTFF is a nonprofit sportsman group dedicated to promoting the sport of fly-fishing and protecting the trout-rich waters of the North Lake Tahoe area. Founded in 1984, the Tahoe Truckee Fly Fishers is a club for all anglers who care about the places in which they fish and who want to learn more about the art of fly-fishing from experienced fly-fishers or beginners.

Recent accomplishments of the club include working on Trout Unlimited and Truckee River Watershed Council projects on Prosser Creek, the Little Truckee and the Truckee River; helping with the local Trout Unlimited Chapter on the Little Truckee River; advocacing for better landuse management to improve wild trout habitat on the Little Truckee River; and annual contributions to the Truckee River Watershed Council.

The fundraiser on Aug. 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. is at Truckee Regional Park’s Riverside Pavilion site. Tickets are $30 before Aug. 9 or $35 after.

The event includes live entertainment, a raffle and demonstrations. You do not have to be a member to attend and all ages are welcome.

It is recommended that you register early.

Fly-casting instructor Jeff Putnam will be there to show attendees how improve his or her casting.

In addition to the work done with organizations such as Trout Unlimited and the Truckee River Watershed Council, the club also has a long-time event that introduces children to the sport of fly-fishing.

The Cliff Frazier Memorial Youth Fly Fishing Program has given many children the opportunity to learn the basics of flyfishing. Twelve children, between the ages of 9 and 14, are offered the program, which covers basic entomology, knot tying, fly tying, reading water, water safety and fly-casting.

Anglers using bait, lures and flies have all caught fish. Fly-fishers have done well near the inlet areas. Bass fishing has been fair.

Davis and Frenchman lakes | Both are full.

Kokanee fishing has been fair to good. Nightcrawlers and Powerbait seem to be the main bait. Mackinaw fishing has been good. Flyfishers are catching some fish with streamers.

Lake Tahoe | All tributaries are open to fishing until Sept. 30. Fishing has been fair to good for mackinaw. A guide is highly recommended if you are fishing for mackinaw for the first time.

Toplining and shore fishing is fair. Most shore anglers use inflated nightcrawlers.

Little Truckee River | The flow is at 165 cfs.

This flow is up slightly from last week. Nymphing and dries should both work at this level. Dry dropper rigs are also recommended. Hatches are similar to the main Truckee.

Martis Lake | Zero kill. Catch and release only with barbless artificial lures or flies. Fishing is best early in the season and the fall. Smallmouth bass are part of the fishery.

Prosser Reservoir | Fishing has been fair.

closed over the dam for construction this season and next. Access to the boat ramp will be through the Hobart Mills side. Fishing has been fair from shore. Nightcrawlers, Powerbait and lures have all produced from shore. Flyfishers have been doing well near the inlets with nymphs and streamers. The kokanee fishing has slowed. Smallmouth bass fishing has been fair.

Truckee River | The flow out of the dam

in Tahoe City is at 86 cfs. The flows through Truckee are at 253 cfs. The flows are now fishable. Fishing has been fair for those working hard. Lots of bugs are appearing now. Golden Stones and Green Drakes still are around.

Caddis, PMD and Little Yellow Stones should also be on the menu. Still mostly a nymphing game, but there should now be more fish looking up for dries with the current flows. Streamers are also good this time of year. This water is special regulation, artificial only with barbless hook. Catch-and-release fishing is encouraged, but an angler may keep two fish with a minimum size of 14 inches during the regular trout season.

Reports from Davis are only fair at best. I suggest not fishing at either until the waters cool.

rom flavor-packed berries in the morning to afternoon ice pops and bedtime stories before the sky is dark, the wonderfully long summer days in Tahoe evoke the well-known line sung by Ella Fitzgerald, “Summertime and the livin’ is easy.” Splashing, meeting other children and exploring abound and there is not a shortage of great places to play with your little ones.

Here are my favorites.

NORTH SHORE Commons Beach | With incredible views of Lake Tahoe and a play area featuring a climbing rock, this is a Tahoe City gem. Bring a picnic and change of clothes for a full day of fun.

EAST SHORE Sand Harbor State Park | Stunning vistas are one of the big draws for this beach. Take lots of pictures and enjoy time with your little one. Parking is limited so you’ll want to take the East Shore Express during busy summer days.

WEST SHORE Beach time | Enjoy walking through the trees to the beach at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park.

Eagle Rock | The panoramic views are worth the stop for this short hike, a treat for you and yours if your tyke is small enough to fit into a baby pack.

Donner Memorial State Park & Donner Lake | West End Beach at Donner Lake offers the ultimate family beach day. Complete with playgrounds, an ice cream vendor, human-powered boat rentals and acres of grass and sand, little ones can wet their feet, swim and mingle with others.

Truckee-Donner Community Pool | The new pool is an ideal place to splash with tots with a warm, shallow recreation area and slides. Water sprays from overhead in one area and a lazy river gently guides swimmers along.

Buds Old Fashioned Fountain Ice Cream | The décor takes you back to the 1950s and the variety of ice cream flavors and fixings are sure to delight.

Northstar California | In addition to roller-skating, gem panning and bungee trampoline, enjoy hiking and a variety of restaurants.

Kings Beach State Recreation Area | I love the sandy expanse here. There is a large jungle gym plus plenty of young children digging and building in the sand nearby. Park for free along Highway 28 or in the public lots (see Sightseeing for details).

Bike paths | With bike paths heading down the West Shore and along the Truckee River, cycling is well worth it. Need gear? Rent from one of the many shops that offer complete outfitting including children’s seats and trailers. Truckee River | Families with young children, including babies, will enjoy floating down the Truckee River from Tahoe City to Alpine Meadows. Rent gear or bring your own.

Incline Village Library | Designated child and teen areas plus outstanding weekly toddler story times make this indoor venue an awesome place to visit on weekdays. Expect puzzles, blocks, crafts and a well-stocked return-or-pass-it-on selection plus friendly librarians.

Truckee River Regional Park | With jungle gyms, baby swings and a sand box, this park is a great place to play. A small train circles the playground on Aug. 5; see Events in each edition for other dates.

Katie’s Playground | This lovely playground, set next to a small grassy area, offers phenomenal views of takeoffs and landings at the Truckee Tahoe Airport plus easy access to scrumptious fare housed inside the airport. Insider’s tip: Head upstairs with your tot for a model airplane or sticker.

KidZone Museum | With an outdoor play space featuring wheelbarrows, a water pump, kitchen and instruments, the KidZone is a must. Membership is well worth the price.

The Tahoe Rim Trail is a 164.8-mile loop trail that encircles Lake Tahoe. The trail is open to hikers and equestrians, and mountain bikers in some sections. It is generally moderate in difficulty, with a 10 percent average grade and elevations ranging from 6,300 to 10,333’. Visit tahoerimtrail.org for maps, guided hikes & descriptions.

GRANITE LAKE

LAKE TAHOE EAST SHORE

MARLETTE LAKE Moderate | 9 miles RT Walk along the dirt path through the picnic area and follow signs to Marlette Lake. Mostly sun exposed. Great wildflowers in early summer. Start at Spooner Lake State Park.

SECRET HARBOR & CHIMNEY BEACH Easy | 3 miles RT Follow the trail to Chimney Beach trail and follow the trail to the end and over a group of boulders to reach the sandy beaches of Secret Harbor (the wooden steps off the trail lead to the nude beach at Secret Cove). Off Hwy. 28.

SKUNK HARBOR Moderate | 2.8 miles RT This interesting hike ends at a beautiful cove lined with boulders and a luxurious sandy beach on the edge of Lake Tahoe with some of the warmest waters around the lake.

Visitors can look inside the historic party house owned by George and Caroline Newhall in the 1920s along beach.

Park north of gate; do not block gate off Hwy. 28.

SPOONER LAKE Easy | 1.8 miles RT Spooner Lake is a great, easy hike for any season with interpretive displays. At Spooner Lake State Park.

NORTH SHORE

PICNIC ROCK Moderate | 3.6 miles RT Just off the Tahoe Rim Trail, the expansive view from the top provides a panorama of both Lake Tahoe and the Martis Valley. A single track winds up, offering a gradual climb with no technical challenges, until reaching Picnic Rock, an old volcanic rock. Off Hwy. 267.

STATELINE LOOKOUT Easy | .5 miles RT This short hike offers superb views of Lake Tahoe.

A short, self-guided nature trail explains the history of the North Shore. Hwy. 28 in Crystal Bay.

Moderate | 2.5 miles+ RT | No dogs Steep descent to Vikingsholm Castle. Can continue to Eagle & Emerald Points around the bay for easy hikes. Connects to Rubicon Trail (see below). Park on either side of rocky overlook in Emerald Bay on Hwy. 89. ADA access (530) 525-9529.

Moderate | 2.2 miles RT A small alpine lake situated on the cusp of Desolation Wilderness, the hike is a popular entrance for hikers and equestrians to the back country and a spectacular trek towering over the pristine waters of Emerald Bay. Steady ascent of 850’ in less than 1 mile. Trailhead at Bayview Campground off Hwy. 89.

PAGE MEADOWS Easy-Moderate | 4-6 miles RT The hike to Page Meadows is a local favorite because of its easy access and beautiful scenery through forests to an expanse of several meadows. You can start the hike to Page Meadows from 64 Acres off Hwy. 89 along the Tahoe Rim Trail for a longer hike or from Ward Creek Boulevard off Hwy. 89.

RUBICON TRAIL & LIGHTHOUSE Easy-Moderate | .5-9 miles | No dogs Hike starts at Calawee Cove at D.L. Bliss State Park or Emerald Bay. Trail follows cliffs and coves along Lake Tahoe, nesting ospreys and eagles, short side trail to Rubicon Lighthouse, which is easy to access with small children.

BALANCING ROCK Easy | .5 miles A short, self-guided nature trail featuring Balancing Rock, an overlying rock of 130 tones balanced on a rock. At D.L. Bliss State Park.

SUGAR PINE POINT STATE PARK Easy | 1.5 miles RT The nature trail loops through the forest past an array of wildflowers and through several sections of dense slash bleached nearly white from years of sun exposure. There are great spots to relax on the beach below Ehrman Mansion.

FIVE LAKES Strenuous | 5 miles RT Five Lakes is a great hike inside Granite Chief Wilderness, with the first 1 mile+ a steady ascent with great views of Alpine Meadows. Trailhead 1.8 miles up Alpine Meadows Road from Hwy. 89 across from Deer Park Drive.

LOWER & UPPER ECHO LAKES Easy | 2.4-4.8 miles RT Lower and Upper Echo Lakes is a little-known paradise perched atop Echo Summit, 5 miles west of Meyers on Hwy. 50. The trailhead begins next to the dam. Once you reach Upper Echo Lake, 2.4 miles from the start, you’ll see a kiosk at a dock for a water taxi. You can take a taxi back or return the way you came, or continue into Desolation Wilderness. The ride is a relaxing 20-minute tour through the channels connecting the two lakes. Taxi (530) 659-7207.

WEST SHORE

CASCADE LAKE Moderate | 1.4 miles RT This boulder-strewn hike takes hikers to the waterfall descending from Desolation Wilderness into Cascade Lake. The falls are raging in the spring and are often a trickle by late summer. Near the end of the trail, walk up a large, flat boulder to the top of a hill where the trail can become confusing. Look for wooden posts marking the trail. Trailhead at Bayview Campground off Hwy. 89. Not recommended for small children or small dogs.

Easy-Strenuous | .5-5 miles RT This hike follows a creek as it passes by waterfalls and spectacular granite boulders along Shirley Creek. Park at the end of Squaw Peak Road. The first section that follows the creek is great for kids. As you climb, the trail may sometimes be hard to distinguish, so keep the creek on your right going up and on your left going down. Can continue a strenuous climb to High Camp and take the Aerial Tram to the valley (schedule at squawalpine.com).

SQUAW & EMIGRANT PEAKS Moderate | 3.4-4.4 miles RT Ride the Aerial Tram to High Camp, elev. 8,200’, and choose from a variety of trails (maps from Guest Services or squawalpine.com). Climb to the weathered buttresses atop Squaw Peak, visit the historic Watson Monument at Emigrant Peak or meander through the meadows covered with wildflowers, and enjoy the panoramic views afforded from Squaw’s spacious upper mountain. Tram ticket required. Hikes in the meadows good for small children.

orty-nine artists at 24 open studios will allow creators to chat, mingle and show off his or her specialties during this six-day event. This will be Forrest’s second time presenting at the tour and he says it’s an event not to miss.

“It’s not like an art fair, it’s really hands on. I’ve created some great relationships with people from this studio tour,” he says.

While we are chatting on a balcony over the lake, a woman from Texas is flipping through a Salvador Dali book. She owns 24 pieces of original Dali art and a few of Forrest’s paintings. She met Forrest on last year’s tour and now spends more time in Lake Tahoe.

“I was working at Kelly Cassidy’s home on the lake painting outside and had my easels set up. [The woman] walked up and said, ‘Stop! I want it just like that.’ At the time, she was battling cancer and came to Lake Tahoe to heal,” he says. “Now, a year later, she is cancer free.”

He was making a name for himself in the downtown Los Angeles impressionism art scene, but got tired of staring at concrete buildings and moved to South Lake Tahoe.

“I was driving by the Tahoe Art League and I pulled up and Sue Stevenson [a league member] was there. I saw all of this wonderful work. I went to a meeting where a local artist was giving a presentation and I joined immediately,” Forrest says.

Scott Forrest’s studio is Studio 21. Some of his favorite artist include: Kelly Smith Cassidy, Studio 18, will be giving live demonstrations at her lakefront studio. She welds pieces and then paints them.

David Foster, Studio 5, is a well-known sculptor who teaches at Lake Tahoe Community College. Most local artists have worked with him. He was a part of developing the college art department.

JOEY CATTONE Forrest points out a painting of his that was bought on last year’s tour by an arms dealer in Virginia. The soft green colors with vibrant pink flower overlay exude a peaceful, soothing feel. “She bought this one because she says this makes her feel calm,” he adds.

Because many artists are showcasing their work, Forrest says it’s best to start the tour in the morning and take your time.

“I recommend going all six days with the passport program. There are 24 studios with about three artists per studio. You can win great prizes and art from getting your passport stamped at all of the locations,” he says. “Stop by the Art League itself,

Marconi is an American artist whose fascination with color began at age 12 when an accident left him blind and partially deaf in one ear. Kindred Art and Folk Institute will be taking an interactive public art piece to Burning Man and structural materials and donations are needed. Two artists, two views Carson City, Nev. Nevada artists Scott Hinton and Paul Ford have been honored with Governor’s Arts Award commissions and their work is being shown at an exhibit titled “Environmental Perspectives” at the Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery. Both artists share a common concern for the environment in unique and contrasting ways. Hinton, a photographer and educator, has spent the past 20 years documenting urban sprawl through the use of panoramic photographs.

Ford has incorporated a lifelong interest in anthropology into his artwork. He mixes natural elements, such as sand and sticks along with some unnatural elements – plastic bottles and other man-made objects — into his art. The exhibit will be in place through Aug. 18. Sparks, Nev. “Mountain Picassos: Basque Arborglyphs of the Great Basin” is at Sparks Museum and Cultural Center until Aug. 11. Developing art Reno, Nev. Sierra Arts Gallery presents a four-artist exhibit from Aug. 3 to 25. In January 2015, this group of artists spent 10 days in the desert at the Goldwell Open Air Museum in Rhyolite, Nev. This group, consisting of Jill Baker, Megan Berner, Nicole Donnelly and Jennifer Myers, used the time and space together to start new work and collaborate with each other, letting the work be influenced by the environment and conversation. Some individual pieces were completed during the residency, but a lot became starting points for larger ideas.

Metro Gallery in Reno City Hall hosts, “Defining Space Through Color and Form,” by sculptor Hans Siig and abstract multimedia artist Francesca Saveri until Aug. 11. Each artist expresses his and her own identities through a sense of geographic space. Saveri’s work was inspired by the environments of Brazil and California.

Art from east to west Reno, Nev. McKinley Arts & Culture Center offers exhibits in two galleries until Aug. 11. Gallery East is displaying the work of multimedia artist Carole Ricketts.

Her work explores personal, cultural and adaptation challenges of changing land and language with the use of ceramics, paint, collage and printmaking. Ricketts masters the mixed-media combination to express emotions all across the board, specifically the meeting of harmony and difficulties.

Gallery West hosts watercolor painter Lisa Jefferson. Her paintings are a unique cross between hyperrealism and dreamlike imagery of the natural beauty of the West Coast. NTA looking forward Tahoe City North Tahoe Arts announces dates for 23rd annual ARTour are from Aug. 12 to 13. This popular annual event has been reinvented into a walking tour in downtown Tahoe City with artist vendors and artrelated events throughout the weekend.

Artists will be gathered in several locations throughout the city demonstrating their artistic processes and offering their work for sale. A colorful map will guide visitors to all the locations. In addition, work from some of the artists will be exhibited in Corison Loft from Aug. 2 through Sept. 12, with a reception on Aug. 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. In keeping with ARTour’s focus on local art, preference will be given to artists who reside within 50 miles of Tahoe City. Narrow focus on Burning Man Truckee Truckee Public Arts Commission presents “The Pinhole Project: a Collaborative Photographic Project From Burning Man” at Truckee Community Recreation Center.

This photographic retrospective of the events, art and people of Burning Man since 1999 was captured by the 100-yearold technology of the pinhole camera.

Twelve pinhole cameras were created out of 50-gallon cardboard barrels. This size is uniquely suited for capturing the incredible scale and immense diversity of art and culture at Black Rock City. The subjects look familiar and at the same time completely foreign because the pinhole can extract an essential stillness through a primitive apparatus of reflected sunlight passed through a minute opening. ECLECTIC FUNK FROM KATDELIC The San Francisco band members of Katdelic are Guitarfish veterans. They bring a uniquely electronic funk sound to the event.

Ron Spearman, aka RonKat, is the lead singer who plays guitar and keyboard and brings raw funk to the stage. The seven-piece band includes two bass players, one drummer and two guitar players. Rounding out the band is Lesley Grant vocalist, keyboard player and DJ. Spearman performed for 10 years with George Clinton’s P-Funk All Stars. He’s a Grammy-winning songwriter and has worked with diverse musicians throughout his career. Katdelic is set to release a new single in August entitled, “Stay on the Up n’ Up.” The band is working on a new album, as well.

RonKat describes their sound: “It’s eclectic funky with a message. It fuses funk and rock with dance floor-oriented music that morphs lots. With the music, we feel and touch our senses and touch everybody else’s senses. We want people to have a good time on the dance floor.”

The Michigan born RonKat grew up surrounded by music.

Guitarfish Music Festival Cisco Grove Ashleigh Castro

he funky, eclectic music festival in Cisco Grove is promising what looks to be one of the best lineups to date. There’s lots of funk, reggae and powerhouse blues.

Brent Dana co-founder of the festival has partnered up with long-time Joshua Tree Music Festival founder Barnett English and the partnership is flourishing. This year’s, the seventh, is clearly Lucky 7. English and Dana have added daily yoga classes and a healing oasis that includes15 healers and various modalities.

The fabulous Midwest band the Main Squeeze is set to bring its funky fun with a soulful blend of hip-hop and rock to the main stage. Pamela Parker is a rock ‘n’ roll powerhouse and performs two sets during the festival with the Fantastic Machine.

Funk, rock and electronic artists will get the audience fired up and dancing.

Vieux Farka Touré from Mali has been referred to as the “The Hendrix of the Sahara.” He brings his stellar guitar playing and world sound to the festival along with songs from his new album entitled “Samba.”

The French-speaking artist and his band mates take the audience on an afro-electric funktastic voyage.

The people in the club would mock my dad and he’d say, ‘Let him sit in and play.’ I would play with hard-core jazz musicians,” he says.

His lessons evolved from there. “I went on to learn from the P-Funk University of funk,” he says.

For RonKat, it’s all about touching people, lifting them up, making them smile and connecting through their music.

Katdelic hits the main stage with special guest guitarist Sasha Brown, formerly of Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, on July 29 at 8 p.m. Get ready to boogie.

SEE-I BRINGS POTENT POSITIVITY See-I turns up the reggae beats. Their sound melds funk, house, dancehall, hiphop, rock and reggae-soul to deliver a potent high-energy dance party. Founded

by Washington, D.C., brothers Arthur “Rootz” Steele and Archie “Zeebo” Steele, who toured and performed for more than15 years as front men for Thievery Corporation, See-I is Rootz and Zeebo’s project.

“We have fun playing music,” says Zeebo, who adds that the band name came from a dream he had. “We were trying to figure out a name for the band. See-I was a play on first person present. As a black youth growing up, I wanted people to see me for who I am, not a color, but a person. The name is about the essence of who we all are and the natural way of seeing people. We need to get passed

the labels. Get to know me.”

His philosophical approach to life is part of the band’s music. He brings the deeper part of himself to his performances.

“The essence of who we are is way bigger than we know,” he says.

The band writes the lyrics and music.

According to Zeebo, he approaches the writing process in many different ways, but much of it is freestyle and organic: “I do something in a live show and most of the time a new song comes from something I was doing at the time. It’s like a thread that starts to unwind.”

Zeebo makes a promise for Guitarfish: “If I don’t leave positive energy then I didn’t do what I came to do — I’ve got a surprise.”

Mostly Zeebo wants the audience to laugh, dance and, in the end, experience a positive vibe. See-I hits the stage on July 30 at 6 p.m.

Guitarfish Music Festival is filled to the brim with excellent music. If there is one festival to get to, it’s this one.

uban pianist Aldo López-Gavilán will present the world premiere of his first symphonic concerto, “Emporium Concerto for Solo Piano and Orchestra,” on the opening weekend of this year’s Classical Tahoe.

“I already had the experience of working together with Maestro Joel Revzen last summer during Festival Napa Valley and it was just fabulous,” says López-Gavilán.

“After that experience we both thought that we needed to do it again. So he invited me to Classical Tahoe to perform George Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and another piece of my own, but it had to be around 20 minutes long. I already had a few original works written for piano and orchestra, but nothing long enough to fill the request.

The theme of the new concerto was inspired by his hope and love for his 8-yearold twin daughters, Andrea and Adriana.

“The first movement is based on a melody I composed as a birthday present, obviously inspired by my feelings about them,” he says. “I named it right away as ‘Emporium’ because I wanted to describe a place where you could find many different things from all over the planet. Then later I learned that this word has different meanings. I liked the fact that all meanings were linked to the spirit of the piece.”

The final two sections of the composition exhibit López-Gavilán’s affinity for merging worldwide musical genres with classical and modern jazz stylings.

“The second movement is kind of a tribute to Cuban songs from La Nueva Trova and American country music songs unified in one melodic symbol of peace and love,” says López-Gavilán. “Then right away, the third and last movement strikes with a very dynamic new theme, rhythmic and polytonal pages of music jumping and running around, recreating the first movement’s main theme with hints of Cuban modern music. As a child growing up in the Vedado neighborhood of Havana in the 1980s, López-Gavilán’s musical intellect was influenced by his parents, who were professional musicians.

“I was born into a musical family, so even before I was born I was already exposed to all kinds of great music,” he says.

“I remember in my early adolescence I fell in love with Igor Stravinsky’s ‘The Rite of Spring’ and that changed my life. Also, Pat Metheny and Keith Jarrett had a very strong impact on me during that time and I still love them.”

López-Gavilán’s performance of “Rhapsody in Blue” will be dedicated to the memory of his father, George, who was a brilliant pianist and bandleader during the heyday of the Vaudeville era.

“When walking the streets of Havana, you will hear live music of all different genres from traditional folk music, songwriters’ songs, jazz, rock, hip-hop or salsa to what could be even more surprising: a big scene of classical music such as opera, choral recitals and chamber music,” he says.

“There is always something going on to check out. And authentically Cuban music could be anything. While we, of course, have specific patterns and syncopated rhythms that cannot be confused, I believe

“ Country music has evolved so much over the years and is open

ight in the Country in Yerington, Nev., was born from humble beginnings and has evolved into one of the biggest country music festivals in Nevada. The event started 15 years ago as a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Mason Valley, which now has two sites in Yerington, and has raised more than $71,000 for more than 41 local charities.

The three-day event features a top country lineup of big names and emerging artists who keep boots tapping. Blake Shelton and Old Dominion were on the bill before they hit it big and Billy Ray Cyrus was crooning “Achy Breaky Heart” in the earlier days, as well.

The festival attendees camp on site and during the day there are bull-riding events and craft beer samplings. Thursday night music starts at 8 p.m. and the rest of the weekend the fun starts at 3 p.m. The 2017 lineup offers three stages on which country music shines.

TOREE MCGEE Toree McGee is the only female artist on the bill this year. She belts out a rendition of Janis Joplin’s “Piece of my Heart” that would make Janis proud. McGee has been singing on stage since she was a toddler.

Her family owned a biker bar and grill and her grandparents were part of a traveling gospel quartet. McGee cut her teeth singing karaoke in the bar. Music is in her blood.

“My mom was a big country fan. I grew up listening to country radio and calling in for concert tickets. My dad was into rock ‘n’ roll,” says McGee, adding that she was drawn to country music.

“Country music has evolved so much over the years and is open to interpretation,” she says.

The artist is on an upward spiral with her solo career. The release of the catchy upbeat single, “Amen,” has garnered attention and gained traction with fans. McGee is truly a one-women show. Currently without a label, she runs the business herself, manages the five people in her band, books the gigs and writes the songs. She practices yoga to find her internal connection. As a songwriter, her writing process is never the same, although it often starts with an idea and then a melody.

DRAKE WHITE & THE BIG FIRE Emerging artist Drake White is one artist on the brink of breaking out big with his band The Big Fire. His hard-working

ethics are paying off. White grew up in northeast Alabama in the Appalachian Mountains. He got started playing music as a kid entertaining his mother’s clients at her home hair salon. Thirteen years ago, he started playing music and packing bars in Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

“Me and the bass player have been playing together for five years. Those years are like dog years and feel more like 35 years.

I’ve shook a lot of hands and got in my 10,000 hours,” says White, who was chosen as a fan favorite last year. “It’s a direct reflection of how passionate we are about our live shows.”

White co-wrote 11 of the 12 songs on their latest album “Spark.” He finds inspiration for his writing by listening to a good record, reading and deep conversation.

“Writing is an outlet where the power lies. Putting pen to paper and being a powerful writer can change the world. What we are saying is important, writing about culture — for the world, for mankind — the music is that megaphone. Songwriting is my passion,” he says.

White is wise and he’s learned much on his journey.

“The greatest lesson I’ve learned is to trust your path and follow your heart. In 10 years of grinding I’ve learned to accept what is happening to truly be happy,” he says.

Drake is a country guy who loves reggae.

“Did you ever play the game, Stuck on an Island? If you could only have one last record what would it be? I’d choose Bob Marley’s ‘Legend,’” says Drake.

lower essences are herbal infusions or decoctions (a method of extraction by boiling herbal or plant material) made from the flowering part of the plant.

British physician Dr. Edward Bach formulated the first 38 flower remedies in the 1930s. Bach was influenced by homeopathy and the teachings of its founder, Samuel Hahnemann.

Flower essences and homeopathy have some similarities and yet are different.

Like homeopathy, flower essences address emotional and mental aspects of well being. Flower essences are said to stimulate physical healing and are used mainly to promote awareness of emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances. The infusions of flowers in water are taken internally or applied topically. They can also be added to the bath or sprayed on clothing or on a pillow before sleeping.

Truckee massage therapist and lifestyle and wellness coach Jodi Hubbell uses flower essences to support people with stress, anxiety and depression.

Flower essences are said to stimulate physical healing and are used mainly to promote awareness of emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances.

“In explaining what flower essences are, I often start by explaining what they are not. While essential oils act on us on a physiological level because we are using the chemical components of a plant, flower essences work on an energetic level. Since they do not contain plant material, they do not cause toxic or allergic reactions and are scent free,” Hubbell says.

Bach’s original 38 remedies support a multitude of issues. There are some that are staples I keep in my medicine cabinet. Olive is a remedy for tiredness and exhaustion after an effort of some kind, such as hard physical or mental labor, or the long struggle against illness. Elm can be used when feeling overwhelmed by responsibility. Sweet chestnut helps bring optimism and peace of mind and ease unwanted thoughts and mental arguments.

Walnut helps to make or adapt to major life changes while pine helps you to accept yourself. Rescue Remedy, a blend of five different flower essences, helps alleviate stress and anxiety. It also is helpful to use if your dog or cat is stressed out. Place a few drops in its mouth or water.

“I have a client that is a small business owner. She always has a lot on her mind, so it’s very difficult for her to focus on one task at a time and hard for her to turn off her brain so she can sleep. For her, I prepared two mixtures: one for daytime, one for night. It had an immediate effect; the very first night she slept great and she was able to focus on the tasks at hand with less distractions,” says Hubbell. “My favorite essence is sunflower.

It helps someone with low self-esteem to shine brighter and it brings warmth and compassion to those who tend to overshadow others.”

“With many flower products, a large number of flowering plants must be harvested for a small amount of product.

With flower essences, flowers are harvested without endangering the plant’s life. Additionally, a small amount of flowers make a flower essence that can be made into hundreds, even thousands of bottles.

Flower essence offers vibrational plant wisdom in a complete and easily utilized form without the harvest of large volumes of plants,” she says.

A flower essence practitioner generally consults with his or her client to assess needs and particular issues. For instance, if someone has insomnia the key is to evaluate the root cause. Hubbell says there is not one essence for insomnia that treats all cases.

There are many new flower essences being prepared since Bach’s day. Herbalists and healers study and derive essences for their clients. There are a number of do-it-yourself Web sites that show you how to create your own flower essences.

An exceptionally delicious culinary event benefiting Project MANA

n an amazing July afternoon, after a hike up Shirley Canyon where I had experienced the energy and power of rushing waterfalls born from massive snowmelt and the pristine mountain air, I headed to the Village at Squaw Valley to enjoy the Art and Wine Festival.

While sampling the wonderful wines and lingering at the displays of stimulating art works, I felt elevated. Adding to this were the always-dramatic mountain views and the sounds offered by the featured musicians — music ranging from bluesy folk-rock to Flamenco.

I again realized how gifted those who live and visit here are and how much, at its essence, wine is about sensory stimulation. We smell, taste, feel and many times share our thoughts and feelings about our vino and how elevated that experience can be when matched with other sensory delights. As with most wine-walk events in our neighborhood, we are fortunate to be presented small-production artisan wines, as opposed to the high-volume usual suspects one sees at the grocery store.

The Experience Pinot Noir.

And now on to the wines — highlights included two excellent offerings from Napa’s Green & Red Vineyard. We don’t usually think of Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel from this appellation but this winery’s unique green and red soils — hence the name — and cooler location high above the valley floor in Chiles Canyon make for lithe, aromatic and spicy wines from those grapes. The Sauvignon Blanc is a real lip smacker, just right for summer.

Another standout was the Experience Pinot Noir. Experience sources fruit from various locations and the grapes for this wine come from the Pinot hot bed of the Sonoma Coast. It walks the fine line between power and finesse and pulls it off beautifully.

Moniz Family Wines’ Albariño was bright and full of white flower and tangy tangerine notes and another great choice for summer sipping.

o you ever wonder where the names of things come from and how they came about? Did you ever hear that you are not supposed to start an article with a question? Now that I’m thinking about it, I believe I have heard that before, but I guess it’s too late for this article since the first sentence is already done.

I like to put them just over the edge of the flame and flip them every so often.

Anyway, take kabobs as an example. It is said that the kabob, or kebab, originated in medieval Prussia when soldiers used their swords to grill chunks of meat. Shish is a Turkish word that means skewer.

We know that a kabob is something cooked on a stick, usually over an open fire.

A kabob can be any large chunks of meat grilled, roasted or stewed and sometimes ground. It is summer and there is nothing like food cooked over an open fire.

As for this particular shrimp and scallop kabob, there a few things I will do a little different than I would do for say a meat or even a fish kabob. First, I would not place it over the hottest part of the flame. Both shrimp and scallops are delicate and you don’t want to overcook or burn them.

I like to put them just over the edge of the flame and flip them every so often, cooking them slow and basting them with the herb butter or dressing of choice. Serve the kabob with vegetables and rice or potatoes. Or, if it is really warm out and you want a lighter dinner, serve it over a nice salad. Baste the kabobs with either herb butter or the vinaigrette you will be using for the salad. If you use wooden skewers, soak them for at least 30 minutes before using. SHRIMP & SCALLOP KABOBS From the kitchen of: Chef David “Smitty” Smith

2 U/13 to U/15 sized shrimp 12 large sea scallops with foot removed 4 skewers

HERB BUTTER ½ lb. butter, softened 3 shallots, fine diced 2 cloves garlic, fine diced 1 T walnuts, finely crushed 1 T parsley, fine chopped ¼ T Pernod liqueur ½ T tarragon ¼ T Worcestershire sauce Make the herb butter first, combining all the ingredients. The butter should be softened, not melted. Wrap each shrimp around a scallop and place the skewer through the tail, then scallop, then head of the shrimp, placing three per skewer. The shrimp will help hold the scallop on the skewer.

Place the skewer over the edge of the flame and baste with the herb butter. Flip and baste again. Repeat flipping one more time on each side. These will only take about 5 minutes or so depending on how hot the fire is.
