Life in the mountains, especially in the Tahoe Sierra, is an amazing life experience whether you’re here for a week or a lifetime. The hues of Lake Tahoe change seemingly by the minute, the alpenglow is different across the evening sky every day, wildflowers are in a constant state of appearing and disappearing overnight, and the weather is always changing. It’s also unpredictable.

Within the span of a week in early June, temperatures ranged from 75 degrees to freezing. The weather changed from glassy days on Big Blue to waves like those on the ocean and several inches of fresh powder in the mountains. Such is life in the mountains, which is why it’s important to be prepared for any visit to Tahoe.

I’ve experienced summer days when it’s 85 degrees at lake level and a fast-moving storm has brought freezing temperatures and snowfall to the higher elevations.

Carry layers, don’t go out alone, tell someone your destination and your anticipated return time. Stay on the trails and wear appropriate footwear. If it’s windy, don’t paddleboard or kayak on any lake.

Always wear a PFD (personal flotation device). When in doubt, ask a local outfitter, or for that matter any local. If locals aren’t out on the lake, you shouldn’t be either.

I’ve had to cross creeks and streams in the last few weeks hiking on familiar trails that I’ve never seen water on until this year. Be prepared to get wet if you’re out hiking. Wear good boots and carry extra socks. It’s fun to tromp through a mountain stream and get muddy. It’s part of the wonder of Tahoe. n

How the lake was formed

About 3 to 5 million years ago, the valley that would become the Tahoe Basin sank between parallel fractures in the Earth’s crust as the mountains on either side continued to rise. A shallow lake began to form in the resulting valley.

Roughly 2 to 3 million years ago, erupting volcanoes blocked the outlet, forcing the lake to rise hundreds of feet above its current elevation, and eventually eroded down to near its current outlet.

Between 1 million and 20,000 years ago, large masses of glacial ice covered the west side of the Tahoe Basin. Current geologic theory suggests an earthen berm (moraine) left by a receding glacier near Olympic Valley acted as a dam, causing the lake level to rise and then draw down rapidly when the dam catastrophically failed. Between

7,000 and 15,000 years ago, a four-mile segment of the West Shore collapsed into the Lake causing a massive submerged debris avalanche, widening the Lake by three miles and creating McKinney Bay.1 The Tahoe Basin is mostly granite, with little topsoil, and therefore few nutrients have washed into the lake to promote the growth of algae and other organisms that make water murky.

As well, 40 percent of the precipitation falling into the Tahoe Basin lands directly on the lake. The remaining precipitation drains through the decomposed granite soil found in marshes and meadows, creating a good filtering system for water.

Urbanization of the Tahoe Basin has eliminated 75 percent of its marshes, 50 percent of its meadows and 35 percent of its steam zone habitats. About 85 percent of all wildlife in the Tahoe Basin use these habitats.

About the lake Lake Tahoe is located in the states of California and Nevada, with two-thirds in California. It is fed by 63 streams and two hot springs.

The Truckee River is Tahoe’s only outlet and flows from the dam in Tahoe City east through Reno and eventually drains into Pyramid Lake in the Nevada desert.

However, water releases are not permitted when the lake surface level falls below the natural rim at 6,223.’ The lowest lake level on record (measured since 1900) was 6,220.26’ on Nov. 30, 1992.

The Lake of the Sky appears blue in color as other colors in the light spectrum are absorbed and blue light is scattered back.

Lake clarity The University of California, Davis, operates the Tahoe Environmental Resarch Center, which monitors, among other

things, the clarity of Lake Tahoe. Clarity has been measured since 1968 and was first recorded at 102.4’.

The waters of Lake Tahoe were clear to an average depth of 73.1’ in 2015. The lowest average depth on record was 64.1’ in 1997. Lake Tahoe is losing clarity because of algae growth fueled by nitrogen and phosphorus.

Lake Tahoe’s discovery The first recorded discovery of Lake Tahoe by white explorers was on Feb. 14, 1844, when John Charles Frémont and Charles Preuss spotted the lake from atop Red Lake Peak. The lake went through several names before it was officially named Tahoe in 1945.

Tahoe is a mispronunciation of the first two syllables of the Washoe’s word for the lake – Da ow a ga, which means “edge of the lake.” 

A

trip to Taylor Creek makes for a fun introduction to Lake Tahoe for families with young children, but it’s also an enjoyable place to spend a few hours no matter how much time you have spent at the lake. While Taylor Creek is best known as the place to view the Kokanee salmon run in the fall (and the bears and raccoons that come to the creek to enjoy a salmon dinner), the summer is a good time to head to Taylor Creek, as well. The creek is gushing with snowmelt and the hiking trails are warm and snow free — unlike many of the trails at higher elevation.

The place to begin any trip to this area is the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. Here you will find rangers who are happy to answer questions about Lake Tahoe, as well as a variety of nature and historical books and maps of the Tahoe region. The visitor center

RAINBOW TRAIL | This half-mile trail takes you on boardwalk and path along the banks of Taylor Creek. You will find panels along the route providing interesting tidbits on the creek and Lake Tahoe. The trail is also home to the Stream Profile Chamber where visitors walk underground to a wall of glass that allows them to see the mountain stream from the bottom to the top. Be sure and come back to the chamber in the fall to catch the salmon run when you will see thousands of the bright red fish up close in the chamber.

LAKE OF THE SKY TRAIL | This half-mile walk to the lake’s edge also brings you to Baldwin and Kiva beaches. Along the way,

enjoy views of Taylor Marsh and Mount Tallac. Look for the cross of snow on the slopes of Tallac.

From the water’s edge, you can walk just above the sandy beach on a three-quartermile trail past the remains of Lucky Baldwin’s Tallac House and the Tallac Hotel.

It also leads through the grounds of several historical homes, including Valhalla, which has been converted into a center for public events. Just a bit further is Camp Richardson Resort, where a host of amenities, including ice cream and the popular Beacon Bar and Grill, can be found. Return to the visitor center via the beach and Lake of the Sky Trail or a connector trail directly from the Tallac Historic Site to the visitor center.

FOREST TREE TRAIL | This short trail focuses on providing information on Tahoe’s most ubiquitous tree. Be sure to stick your nose right into the bark to experience the butterscotch or vanilla smell of a Jeffrey pine.

SMOKEY’S TRAIL | This short trail is designed to impart a lesson in campfire safety to children. After walking the trail and seeing Smokey’s instructions, kids

The visitor center and Tallac Historic sites are operated by a public/private partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and the Tahoe Heritage Foundation, which supports preservation, restoration and education projects in the Tahoe Basin. 

hunderbird Lodge is teeming with activity as construction workers are bustling around, gardeners are tending to the foliage, the chefs are cooking up breakfast and Eddie Bauer is hosting a photo shoot for its fall catalog.

In the midst of it all is Bill Watson, looking dapper in his Eddie Bauer attire with Calliegh, the 10-year-old Thunder pup by his side. As one of Lake Tahoe’s top historians, Thunderbird’s chief executive and curator has an interesting past that brought him to watch over George Whittell Jr.’s famed estate.

He tries to live by his grandfather’s motto, “We are only here for two reasons: to have fun and leave a place better than you found it.” Throughout the years, he’s done that — judging from the impact he made in the gaming industry and now in preserving Thunderbird Lodge.

–Bill Watson Watson’s father was in technology for NASA and later Raytheon. While with NASA, his dad developed systems for the Apollo missions. He realized that they built enough parts to put 36 missions on the moon and predicted that the bottom would drop out in the aerospace industry. He eventually left the aerospace industry in 1968, relocated the family to Puerto Rico and started building computer systems for the gaming industry. Although his father was a genius at building and fixing computers, he didn’t know how to program them.

Bill Jr., at age 12, also took up an interest in computers and learned how to program them. While in his early teens, Bill received his first paycheck from Centronics, a pioneer in casino gaming technology, including computer systems and electronic slot machines. The family moved to Las Vegas while Bill Jr. was in high school where Bill continued to work in the casino business. He stayed in the gaming industry for the next 30 years.

moving to Colorado when he was offered the job at IGT in Reno. Its proximity to the mountains and Lake Tahoe sold him.

Being at the inception of IGT allowed Bill to work in every facet of the gaming industry. He started his own business inventing and managing the Players Club card technology, a loyalty program that many casinos offer to guests so that they can receive rewards every time they gamble.

He eventually sold it to Bally Technologies and retired in 2003. Bill worked a stint as a political consultant for both the Democratic and Republican parties in 2004 and then joined a National Geographic research team helping photographers on a voyage through the South Pacific.

“I would go out with unexposed rolls of film and full cans of beer and come back with exposed rolls and empty cans,” he says.

As well as acting as the photographers’ first mate, Bill also started pitching his own story ideas to the magazine. He suggested covering the possibility of wildfire in Lake Tahoe, but was redirected into spending a 90-day stint at the Thunderbird Lodge, a Lake Tahoe historical site that at the time was at risk of being demolished. In fact, Bill found that the famed estate was generally falling apart.

“My goal was to pack it up and tear it down,” Bill says.

Instead, Bill felt he had to do whatever it took to restore and revive the landmark.

He tirelessly led the charge in raising $10 million to settle the debt mortgage. Almost 10 years later, the Thunderbird Lodge is thriving thanks to the generosity of its few major donors.

“Thunderbird is truly becoming Lake Tahoe’s art and history museum,” Bill says.

“There are a lot of facets to the Thunderbird Lodge and people have huge misconceptions about what the Thunderbird is.”

Because protection and preservation of the property is paramount and the estate is regarded as a cultural resource, people can only access the property through public tours and educational events.

“This is a window into the past that needs to be cared for, otherwise you lose sight into what’s happened, so as to prepare for the future,” Bill says.

He emphasizes that the Thunderbird Lodge accepts financial support at all levels in order to keep George Whittell’s legacy and integral part of Lake Tahoe history alive.

MARLETTE LAKE Moderate | 9 miles RT Walk along the dirt path through the picnic area and follow signs to Marlette Lake. Mostly sun exposed. Great wildflowers in early summer. Start at Spooner Lake State Park.

SECRET HARBOR & CHIMNEY BEACH Easy | 3 miles RT Follow the trail to Chimney Beach trail and follow the trail to the end and over a group of boulders to reach the sandy beaches of Secret Harbor (the wooden steps off the trail lead to the nude beach at Secret Cove). Off Hwy. 28.

SKUNK HARBOR Moderate | 2.8 miles RT This interesting hike ends at a beautiful cove lined with boulders and a luxurious sandy beach on the edge of Lake Tahoe with some of the warmest waters around the lake.

Visitors can look inside the historic party house owned by George and Caroline Newhall in the 1920s along beach.

Park north of gate; do not block gate off Hwy. 28.

SPOONER LAKE Easy | 1.8 miles RT Spooner Lake is a great, easy hike for any season with interpretive displays. At Spooner Lake State Park.

NORTH SHORE

PICNIC ROCK Moderate | 3.6 miles RT Just off the Tahoe Rim Trail, the expansive view from the top provides a panorama of both Lake Tahoe and the Martis Valley. A single track winds up, offering a gradual climb with no technical challenges, until reaching Picnic Rock, an old volcanic rock. Off Hwy. 267.

STATELINE LOOKOUT Easy | .5 miles RT This short hike offers superb views of Lake Tahoe.

A short, self-guided nature trail explains the history of the North Shore. Hwy. 28 in Crystal Bay.

Moderate | 2.5 miles+ RT | No dogs Steep descent to Vikingsholm Castle. Can continue to Eagle & Emerald Points around the bay for easy hikes. Connects to Rubicon Trail (see below). Park on either side of rocky overlook in Emerald Bay on Hwy. 89. ADA access (530) 525-9529.

Moderate | 2.2 miles RT A small alpine lake situated on the cusp of Desolation Wilderness, the hike is a popular entrance for hikers and equestrians to the back country and a spectacular trek towering over the pristine waters of Emerald Bay. Steady ascent of 850’ in less than 1 mile. Trailhead at Bayview Campground off Hwy. 89.

PAGE MEADOWS Easy-Moderate | 4-6 miles RT The hike to Page Meadows is a local favorite because of its easy access and beautiful scenery through forests to an expanse of several meadows. You can start the hike to Page Meadows from 64 Acres off Hwy. 89 along the Tahoe Rim Trail for a longer hike or from Ward Creek Boulevard off Hwy. 89.

RUBICON TRAIL & LIGHTHOUSE Easy-Moderate | .5-9 miles | No dogs Hike starts at Calawee Cove at D.L. Bliss State Park or Emerald Bay. Trail follows cliffs and coves along Lake Tahoe, nesting ospreys and eagles, short side trail to Rubicon Lighthouse, which is easy to access with small children.

BALANCING ROCK Easy | .5 miles A short, self-guided nature trail featuring Balancing Rock, an overlying rock of 130 tones balanced on a rock. At D.L. Bliss State Park.

SUGAR PINE POINT STATE PARK Easy | 1.5 miles RT The nature trail loops through the forest past an array of wildflowers and through several sections of dense slash bleached nearly white from years of sun exposure. There are great spots to relax on the beach below Ehrman Mansion.

ALPINE MEADOWS

FIVE LAKES Strenuous | 5 miles RT Five Lakes is a great hike inside Granite Chief Wilderness, with the first 1 mile+ a steady ascent with great views of Alpine Meadows. Trailhead 1.8 miles up Alpine Meadows Road from Hwy. 89 across from Deer Park Drive.

Dogs prohibited May 15-July 15.

OLYMPIC VALLEY

SHIRLEY CANYON & SHIRLEY LAKE

SOUTH SHORE

LOWER & UPPER ECHO LAKES Easy | 2.4-4.8 miles RT Lower and Upper Echo Lakes is a little-known paradise perched atop Echo Summit, 5 miles west of Meyers on Hwy. 50. The trailhead begins next to the dam. Once you reach Upper Echo Lake, 2.4 miles from the start, you’ll see a kiosk at a dock for a water taxi. You can take a taxi back or return the way you came, or continue into Desolation Wilderness. The ride is a relaxing 20-minute tour through the channels connecting the two lakes. Taxi (530) 659-7207.

WEST SHORE

CASCADE LAKE Moderate | 1.4 miles RT This boulder-strewn hike takes hikers to the waterfall descending from Desolation Wilderness into Cascade Lake. The falls are raging in the spring and are often a trickle by late summer. Near the end of the trail, walk up a large, flat boulder to the top of a hill where the trail can become confusing. Look for wooden posts marking the trail. Trailhead at Bayview Campground off Hwy. 89. Not recommended for small children or small dogs.

Easy-Strenuous | .5-5 miles RT This hike follows a creek as it passes by waterfalls and spectacular granite boulders along Shirley Creek. Park at the end of Squaw Peak Road. The first section that follows the creek is great for kids. As you climb, the trail may sometimes be hard to distinguish, so keep the creek on your right going up and on your left going down. Can continue a strenuous climb to High Camp and take the Aerial Tram to the valley (schedule at squawalpine.com).

SQUAW & EMIGRANT PEAKS Moderate | 3.4-4.4 miles RT Ride the Aerial Tram to High Camp, elev. 8,200’, and choose from a variety of trails (maps from Guest Services or squawalpine.com). Climb to the weathered buttresses atop Squaw Peak, visit the historic Watson Monument at Emigrant Peak or meander through the meadows covered with wildflowers, and enjoy the panoramic views afforded from Squaw’s spacious upper mountain. Tram ticket required. Hikes in the meadows good for small children.

TRUCKEE

GLACIER MEADOW LOOP

Moderate | 1 mile RT Quick hike to the top of a volcanic outcropping offers panoramic views of the area off Hwy. 89 south of Tahoe City.

Easy | .5 miles RT Short, self-guided nature loop with signs that explain how glacial action carved and polished the surface landscape. Take Interstate 80 W from Truckee to the Castle Peak/Boreal Ridge Road exit.

South Lake Tahoe Tahoe Games Bike Nights offer a family-friendly, cross-country bike race on June 16 and Sept. 29, featuring an illuminated course spanning across the Lake Tahoe Golf Course — over fairways, into the rough, through sand traps and over bridges with the occasional cart path.

It is open to all ages and riding abilities.

The race is approx-imately 6 miles, with two 3-mile laps for most classes. Helmets and lights are recommended. No electric bikes will be allowed.

Tahoe venues Big Blue Adventure has opened registration for 2017 adventure races from trail running and triathlons to swimming and more.

The Tahoe Trail Running Series Burton Creek Trail Run on June 18, Run to the Beach on July 4, Marlette 50 km and 10 Miler on Aug. 13 and Emerald Bay Trail Run on Sept. 17.

The 6th annual XTERRA Tahoe City Off-Road Triathlon, Duathlon and Sprint are on June 24 and the XTERRA Lake Tahoe Off-Road Triathlon is on Aug. 19.

Donner Lake Triathlon is on July 22 and 23, the Truckee Marathon on Sept. 24 and the Great Trail Race is on Oct. 8.

Championship returns to Sierra

Norden Sierra Club’s Clair Tappaan Lodge offers outings throughout the year. Family Fun and Service, in which everyone helps maintain trails, while exploring lakes and meadows, is from June 17 to 23. This outing includes lodging hot tub, showers, laundry and hearty meals and snacks.

The minimum age is 8. The leader will be Paul LaQuatra.

Mountain Medley is from July 9 to 15 and includes daily hikes, a Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival play and state park fees. The leader will be William Baurecht.

Just for Grandparents and Grandkids is from July 16 to 21. This outing includes hiking portions of the Pacific Crest Trail, all accommodations, meals and admission fees. The minimum age is 6. The leader will be Angela White.

A Gathering of Friends, a fundraiser

Olympic Valley U.S. Ski & Snowboard announced that Squaw Valley will host the 2018 Liberty Mutual Insurance NASTAR National Championships from March 21 to 25, 2018 — the first time the event returns to the Sierra since 1981. Following the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, NASTAR National Championships will build on the enthusiasm generated by the games and provide a new locale for fans to get involved with alpine sports. NASTAR participants qualify for the championships by earning a Top 10 national ranking or a Top 5 state ranking within their age, gender and ability group by Feb. 19, 2018.

Boca Reservoir | The road over the dam is closed until further notice. Inflow is at 605.9 cfs and the outflow is 500 cfs. Powerbait, nightcrawlers and lures are all working. Fly-fishers have been catching some fish near the inlet with nymphs, streamers and dries.

Donner Lake | Fishing has been fair to

T

his year marks the 29th annual Truckee Kids Fishing Derby on June 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Coldstream Pond behind Donner Memorial State Park. It is free to ages 12 and younger.

Many children from the community have participated through the years and are now fishing on his or her own and, in some cases, bringing their children to the derby.

When founder Bob Tilton started the derby, he was hoping to get kids outdoors, give them an alternative to getting into trouble and develop a lifelong passion for fishing. Judging from what we see, this event is having the desired impact.

Volunteers are needed to help the children are always welcome, including kids older than age 12. You do not have to be an expert to help set up the kids’ equipment and show them how to cast. For many family members, this may be their first experience with fishing.

Organizers ask that you sign up your child at ACE Mountain Hardware & Sports in Truckee, and get supplies there.

While the event is free, sponsors need to get an idea of how many children to expect.

A limited amount of equipment is available for kids at the event.

Here are some tips to help make the experience a good one: • Arrive early to get a good spot to park and fish.

• Have plenty of snacks and liquids to keep kids hydrated. Rotary will have a snack bar selling drinks and lunch items. This money helps fund this event.

• Have some other things, such as board games, to keep kids occupied before the beginning of the event.

• Patience on the part of your child and you is a necessary component.

• Before the event, check the fishing tackle. One of the most common problems that we see at events like this is not having an adequate amount of fishing line. Not having enough line gives you problems in casting and your child will not be able to reach the fish. Most people place 4- to 8-pound test line on their reels.

While lighter line casts further, it is not as strong when it comes to playing a fish. I like 6-pound test line.

• Old line can cause problems because it tends to be brittle. In fact, you can break old line while casting out your bait. Even worse is that it can break when your child has hooked a fish.

Do not leave any monofilament line behind, it causes problems with wildlife. Dispose of it in a trash receptacle.

• A spool of lighter line than the main line is recommended for a leader along with some weights. Split shot and egg sinkers are good.

• Hooks, No. 8 to No. 12, are a good option.

• Simple baits, Berkeley Powerbait and salmon eggs, are the easiest and most effective.

Nightcrawlers and Powerbait seem to be the main bait. Mackinaw fishing has been good. Flyfishers are catching some fish with streamers.

Lake Tahoe | All tributaries are closed to all

fishing until July 1 and then only open until Sept.

A guide is highly recommended if you are fishing for mackinaw for the first time. Toplining and shore fishing are fair. Most shore anglers use inflated nightcrawlers.

Little Truckee River | The flow is at 657

cfs. The flows have come down. Fishing at this level can be productive. Nymphing is your best bet at these flows. Hatches are similar to the main Truckee.

Martis Lake | Zero kill. Catch and release only with barbless artificial lures or flies.

Fishing is best early in the season and again the fall. Smallmouth bass are part of the fishery here.

Prosser Reservoir | Fishing has been fair.

OUT & ABOUT

Fishing Licenses are required in California and Nevada for 16 years and older. Temporary licenses are available. California (916) 928-5822 or dfg.ca.gov; Nevada (866) 703-4605 or ndow.org. Licenses are available at most hardware stores.

California Department of Fish and Game holds Free Fishing Days on July 1 and Sept. 2, with Nevada’s Free Fishing Day on June 10.

LAKE TAHOE Fishing is closed in Lake Tahoe within 300 feet of its tributaries and upstream to the first lake from Oct. 1 to June 30.

Lake Tahoe is open year-round from 1 hour before sunrise to 2 hours after sunset. No fishing is allowed within 300 feet of the mouth of any stream. Most Sierra lakes are open all year.

No fish may be used for bait or possessed for use as bait in Lake Tahoe, Fallen Leaf Lake or Donner Lake, unless taken from that lake. Live bait in these lakes is limited to: Lahontan redside shiner, Tui chub, Tahoe sucker, Lahontan mountain sucker, Piute sculpin and Lahontan speckled dace. Chumming is illegal. There is a two-fish limit on Mackinaws, and a limit of five fish on Lake Tahoe.

Fishing for Rainbows from the shore is best May through July. If you’re on the North Shore, the Kings Beach and Lake Forest areas are planted throughout the summer. Cave Rock on the East Shore of the lake is a good location for Rainbow and Brown.

TAHOE REGION

SPOONER LAKE Spooner Lake is managed as a trophy fishery at Spooner Lake State Park on the East Shore. It is open all year for catch and keep, with a limit of five trout. Rowboats, inflatable rafts and float tubes may be used, but no motorized boats.

UPPER TRUCKEE RIVER The Upper Truckee is fed from the waters of Meiss Country south of Highway 89 in South Lake Tahoe.

Fishing is good in the deep pools during the early part of fishing season.

TRUCKEE REGION

BOCA RESERVOIR Boca is good for early and late shore fishing and is popular for trolling for Rainbow, Brown and Brook.

DONNER LAKE Brown and Rainbow can be expected when shore fishing with good spots at the boat ramp or the west end of the beach. Mackinaws can be found in the shallows during the early season.

MARTIS CREEK RESERVOIR Rainbow, Brown and Lahontan cutthroat trout. Catch and release only using artificial lures with barbless hooks and no bait. No motorized boats.

PROSSER CREEK RESERVOIR

ECHO LAKES Just a short drive off of Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe, try both boat and shore fishing here. Shore fishing is usually good from the dam. Please respect the rights of private property and homeowners around the lake.

FALLEN LEAF LAKE The best fishing is from a boat, but occasionally fish can be taken from the shore with a good cast. The lake is a short walk from Fallen Leaf Lake Road or Fallen Leaf Campground.

Fishing within 250 feet of the dam is illegal.

SAWMILL POND A stocked pond for children 15 years of age and younger.

Adults are allowed to help children fish, but not allowed to fish themselves. The pond is located 1 mile south of South Lake Tahoe along Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

Among the best trout fishing in California, especially for Rainbow and Brown.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR Holds a large number of trophy class Rainbow and Brown trout. Shore fishing nets Browns and Rainbow, with Kokanee when trolling.

TRUCKEE RIVER At Lake Tahoe’s only outlet in Tahoe City, fishing is closed year-round from the dam in Tahoe City to 1,000 feet downstream. Certain other sections of the Truckee are closed year-round. Check fishing regulations.

Fish the deep pools during the early part of the season.

Best bets are to fish the section of the river between Tahoe City and River Ranch (Hwy. 89 and Alpine Meadows Road).

Anglers using bait, lures and flies have all caught fish. Fly-fishers have done well near the inlet areas. Bass fishing has been fair.

Stampede Reservoir | The road is closed

over the dam for construction and will remain so this season and next. Access to the boat ramp will be through the Hobart Mills side. Fishing has been fair from shore. Nightcrawlers, Powerbait and lures have all produced from shore. Flyfishers have been doing well near the inlets with nymphs and streamers. The kokanee fishing has been fair to good. Smallmouth bass fishing has been fair.

Truckee River | The flow out of the dam in Tahoe City is at 1,030 cfs. The flows through Truckee are at 1,681 cfs. While it has come down some, the flow remains high. Fishing has been good for those working hard. Most anglers are using San Juan worms, egg patterns and large stonefly imitations. Baetis, March Brown, Caddis imitations and streamers are also good this time of year. This water is special regulation, artificial only with barbless hooks. Catch-and-release fishing is encouraged in this section, but an angler may keep two fish with a minimum size of 14 inches during the regular trout season.

Davis and Frenchman lakes | Both are

full and spilling. Boat, shore and fly anglers are catching fish. Reports from Davis are only fair. Blood midge, Callibaetis and small midges are the main insects to imitate subsurface.

Frenchman fishing has been fair.

elebrating its 100th year in operation, the Tahoe City Golf Course is truly a gem hidden in plain sight. First open for play in 1917, the course was designed by May “Queenie” Dunn Hupfel, the club pro and manager. It only hosted six holes with sand greens before expanding in 1926 to the nine holes it still has today.

The Tahoe City course has continued to provide great golf at a reasonable price.

The 2,570-yard, par-33 course is located in the heart of downtown and despite its compact stature, it provides challenging play for both experts and novices. In the middle of the 20th Century, the course was a popular hangout of Frank Sinatra and the rest of the Rat Pack.

Starting with a reachable-in-two par 5 and ending back at the clubhouse on a downhill 150-plus-yard par 3, most rounds at Tahoe City take an hour or two. You can keep your driver in the bag for the 5th hole; a dog-leg right par 4 with a magnetic water hazard right of the fair-way and a mature widearmed pine tree directly in the path from the tee box to its off-camber two-tier green.

Though there is ample opportunity for losing balls to the surrounding forest and deep reeds, most missed hits will land you on an adjacent fairway with the consolation of saving your par. In spite of its age,

this course remains well maintained and its greens hold tough and true — even for the most technical of putters. Remember that your putts will more often than not fade to the lake.

The grounds give off a friendly, laidback, local vibe that is formally welcoming enough to accommodate the most serious of golfers, as well as recreational players, families and four-legged friends.

A practice facility with tee pads and nets, as well as a decent-sized putting and chipping green are both available onsite. Inside, the clubhouse is stocked with a quaint pro shop, full bar and restaurant. Be sure to pickup a hearty tri-tip sandwich from the window when making the turn to the 6th tee.

On a mellow day, you can fit a lot of holes in to a short amount of time; perfect for an easy morning round before work or a nice walk at dusk. However, pace of play can sometimes be slow on the weekends and holidays, so be sure to choose your tee times wisely.

If you’re looking for a quick, challenging, fun nine in North Lake Tahoe and don’t want to break the bank, you can never go wrong with Tahoe City Golf Course. 

FARAD TO FLORISTON ON THE TRUCKEE RIVER

T

he Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway is still a work in progress, but the sections that are open offer an opportunity to enjoy inspiring hikes and bike rides along rarely accessed terrain The project, which was the brainchild of Janet Phillips, received enthusiastic support when she first proposed the idea in 2003. Due to issues with private landowners and public entities, Phillips’s dream encountered obstacles; but, year by year, more of the trail has been either improved or opened. The Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway will stretch for 116 miles from Tahoe City to Pyramid Lake when completed.

The section of the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway in the Truckee River Canyon between Floriston and Farad is only 4 miles roundtrip, but there is much natural beauty and history to enjoy. The trail parallels the Truckee River and at times runs along the bank, offering one an opportunity to cool one’s feet in its refreshing water. Cottonwoods and willows abound in the moist riparian environment while the arid mountain ridges towering above sport mostly sagebrush and scrub pine.

The trail can be accessed at either end, but the easiest parking is at Farad. Take Interstate 80 to the Farad exit about 14 miles east of Truckee. From there the trail runs upriver. Parking is on the south side of I-80.

The hike starts at the old Farad Hydroelectric Power Plant built in 1899. (A farad is a unit of electrical capacitance named after the brilliant British scientist Michael Faraday, who established the basis for electromagnetic physics.) To generate power, a large wooden flume was constructed to divert water from the Truckee River upstream at Floriston to the power plant. The gravity-assisted flow down the flume drove the turbines at Farad. The Floriston diversion dam and parts of the flume itself were destroyed in a January 1997 flood, but much of the flume remains intact and the trail meanders along this example of early industrialization. The Farad facility’s 2.5-megawatt capacity not only once powered western Nevada mining operations, but also provided lighting for Reno, Carson City and Virginia City.

The Truckee River Canyon has a long history as an important transportation corridor with a major 22

highway and railroad, but except for one stretch underneath Interstate 80, traffic noise on the trail is abated by the rushing waters of the Truckee River.

On the approach to Floriston, you’ll see a destroyed diversion dam in the Truckee River, but there is virtually no evidence of the huge Floriston Pulp and Paper Company mill that went into operation there in 1899. The paper mill produced book, writing and manila paper types along with thin tissue wraps for

way’s steel cable extended nearly 9,000 feet from a nearby mountain peak down to a terminal near the railroad tracks. The aerial line was operated by gravity as buckets loaded with wood soared out of the sky. It became a ski lift when mill manager Roy O. Young rode up in a bucket and skied back down.

The project was a huge economic boost, but came with immediate environmental costs. The pulp mill discharged up to 150,000 gallons of acidic waste 1910 pulp mill at Floriston

oranges and other fruits. There was also a machine that made “raisin tray,” a paper tray to lay harvested grapes on so they could dry in the sun to become raisins.

Mill construction required 3 million board feet of lumber and 1.5 million bricks that were burned in local kilns. A sidetrack was built from the railroad to the plant and 25 structures were erected to house the work force. It was a huge project that cost $500,000 dollars, but took only 90 days to complete. When finished, it was the largest pulp mill west of the Mississippi. The job represented the largest lumber contract awarded to Truckee lumbermen since the Comstock bonanza years. The hydroelectric generation plant at Farad provided electricity to run the whole operation.

In 1920, an aerial tramway was built. The tram-

directly into the Truckee River every day. Fish died and witnesses in Reno reported that the river water consisted of a “blend between black and brown with soapy bubbles covering the surface.” It was said that you could tell what paper was being made at any given time by the color of the river. After years of litigation, the pulp mill closed in 1930 and was dismantled. When Deputy Kinkead arrived, Mrs. Pearson gave him a complete description of the three suspects and their activities. She told him that one of the men was asleep in his room and then showed the deputy an unusual boot print she had noticed in the fresh snow. It had a very narrow heel, the kind popular with gamblers and dudes.

While locked up in Truckee’s calaboose, Gilchrist confessed to the crime and then spilled the beans and implicated leader Jack Davis, a wellknown businessman.

I

n Part I, a gang of desperadoes pulled off the first train robbery in the West and escaped with more than $41,000 in gold coins. The successful heist occurred in the early morning hours of Nov. 5, 1870, near Verdi, Nev., about 23 miles east of Truckee.

After they broke into the Wells Fargo strong boxes, the perpetrators loaded their saddled horses with the gold coins they stashed in leather boot-tops and buckskin purses. Quickly, they bolted into the surrounding countryside. Ringleader Jack Davis grabbed $20,000 for his share, buried it nearby and then rode south to his mill operation in Virginia City, Nev. Some of the gangsters took the road northeast to Crystal Peak, Nev., where they left their take in a hidden ravine. Others headed to Sierra Valley in California about 25 miles north of Truckee, where they hid out in a quiet boardinghouse.

The stunning crime shocked Western communities. In a front-page editorial, the San Francisco Daily Alta warned: “This affair has struck everybody with amazement, so bold, decisive, well planned and successful has it proved. An end must be quickly put to this still neophyte form of banditry before others imitate it — devil-may-care desperadoes flaunting long-barreled revolvers in stealing mail of yours and mine.”

Central Pacific Railroad dispatched F.T. Burke, their most experienced detective, along with a force of hand-picked investigators. To generate incentive for local lawmen, Central Pacific, Wells Fargo, the U.S. Post Office and Nevada governor Henry G. Blasdel teamed up to post a reward of $40,000 for the arrest and conviction of the daring robbers. It was the largest bounty ever offered in the West.

The robbery itself was a complete success; the result of careful planning and quick execution by a team of daring men.

But an inquisitive woman and the dogged efforts of Reno Sheriff Deputy James H. Kinkead spoiled their perfect crime. Eight hours after the heist, gang member John Squires took lodging at Pearson’s Hotel near Sardine Lake in California northwest 24

of Verdi. The innkeepers at the small hostel were Nicholas Pearson and his wife, who were unaware of the recent crime.

Shortly after Squires’ arrival, two of his cohorts, E.B. Parsons and James Gilchrist, registered and took a room across the hall.

Minutes later, Squires quietly crossed the hall and entered the other room. Mrs. Pearson noticed the suspicious activity and climbed the stairs. Putting her ear to the closed door, Mrs. Pearson heard the three men whispering and she decided to keep an eye on them.

Early the next morning, Squires and Parsons rode off, leaving Gilchrist behind, asleep in his room. By now Mrs. Pearson had heard of the train robbery from a customer and sensed the trio’s uneasiness.

When Gilchrist left his room an hour later carrying a heavy sack, Mrs. Pearson followed him to the outhouse, where she peeked at him through a small knothole.

She watched him pour $20 gold pieces from a saddlebag into an old boot that he

Kinkead had seen the same imprints in the snow at the scene of the crime. A group of armed hunters from Truckee helped the deputy ambush the suspected bandit in his room. Gilchrist was arrested without incident and escorted to the Truckee jail.

Kinkead then rode north following the tracks left by the captured outlaw’s accomplices. Around midnight, he caught E.B. Parsons asleep in the Sierra Valley Hotel and quickly arrested him. The lawman didn’t know Parsons, but he recognized the distinctive boots near the bed. Kinkead suspected that the other fugitive was John Squires, a Virginia City outlaw familiar to him. The officer knew Squires had a brother living in Sierraville, where he caught the exhausted bandit napping. By the afternoon of Nov. 7, Squires, Parsons and Gilchrist were all under guard in Truckee.

Kinkead had caught three of the train robbers in just 48 hours and would earn about $30,000 of the reward money for his efforts. While locked up in Truckee’s calaboose, Gilchrist confessed to the crime and then spilled the beans and implicated leader Jack Davis, a well-known businessman. Wells Fargo’s detectives tracked down suspect Sol Jones and Chief Detective Burke interrogated the carpenter until he broke down and implicated the others.

who had not been present during the robbery, also cooperated and within four days all the crooks involved were in custody.

Gilchrist and the others led the detectives to most of the cached money. Davis reluctantly took officers to a spot near the Truckee River where he had stashed his loot. A reporter for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise wrote, “The twenties [coins] were scraped up by the double handfuls…Davis did not assist in this work, but stood looking on — doubtless almost sick at heart to see his booty scratched to the last coin.”

After a short trial, four members of the gang were sentenced from 18 to 22 years in the Nevada State Prison. A 24-year sentence was leveled on known stage robber John Squires. E.B. Parsons, a long-time Virginia City gambler, got 20. Tilton Cockerell, a previously convicted gunman and road agent, was sentenced to 22 years’ hard labor. John Chapman, a Sunday school superintendent who continued to proclaim his innocence, was sent away for 18 years. The judge reduced Sol Jones’ sentence to five years for cooperating, while James Gilchrist and Chat Roberts went free for testifying against the others.

Despite his role as ringleader, “Big Jack” Davis was still popular among the Virginia City community. Sentenced to only 10 years in prison — a governor later cut that to three — “Big Jack” never learned his

lesson. In 1875, his first year of freedom, he was killed while attempting to rob a Wells Fargo stagecoach. Thus ended the criminal career of Jack Davis. The first Western railroad heist finally passed into history when gangster E. B. ark Maynard’s book, “Grind,” seems to contain insider information about the Northern Nevada area and people.

If you’ve ever been to a ski resort, gambled in Reno or have admired the wild mustangs, then this is a book that may resonate with you.

Maynard, a former Reno-Tahoe journalist turned creative writer, grew up in Incline Village, Nev. He was always into reading and writing; he studied English throughout school and was usually ingesting two to three books at a time. After graduating from Incline High School, he moved to San Diego for his undergraduate studies, spent a few years in San Francisco and moved back to the area in 2000. He worked as a journalist, editor and online manager, researching and writing stories about the people, places and experiences around him, which ultimately gave him fuel for his short-story collection, “Grind.”

In 2003, Maynard taught at Truckee Meadows Community College part time for the flexibility teaching gave him as a stayat-home dad. While he enjoyed teaching for the social aspect and because he could inspire future writers, Maynard also wanted to improve his writing skills. He entered a low-residency, creative writing master’s program at Antioch University Los Angeles where he worked on “Grind.”

great chance to see if I could really be a writer,” he says, adding that he had to be much more self-disciplined when faced with that much alone time.

While working on his master’s degree, Maynard started writing stories that were published in magazines before he ever thought of collecting them into a book. It took him five years to form his collection that was published by Torrey House Press in 2012. His debut work won him the 2015 Nevada Writers Hall of Fame Silver Pen. The book experienced resurgence in popularity when it was selected by the Nevada State Library and Archives as a Nevada Reads Book.

“It was kind of a slow roller, but it’s really kept its legs with the Nevada Hall of Fame Silver Pen and being named the Nevada

Reads Book [last year],” he says.

“With its revival, my publisher put it in a second printing. Torrey Press’s focus is writing about the American West and I believe that to date, ‘Grind’ is its most urban book.”

His favorite writers — Edward Abbey, Raymond Carver and other notable American West writers — inspired Maynard. He wanted his book to connect to the American West, which is why he chose the final story to be a man on a horse riding off into the sunset.

During the 2016-17 Nevada Reads season, “Grind” was featured in libraries and bookstores all over the state and Maynard

gave 15 readings. He is now focused on writing his first novel about the Walker River/Twin Lakes region in the late 19th to early 20th centuries.

“It will be heavily researched; I’ve been working on it for a couple of months and now that I’m out of school, I want to focus on getting a couple of chapter drafts done,” he says.

Maynard has a short story about Tahoe, titled “Fishing With Charo,” published in the “Tahoe Blues: Short Lit on Life at the Lake” anthology. Still, he finds that he enjoys the challenge of researching other places.

“Writing about Tahoe feels too close to home. And the Tahoe where I grew up is so different than what it is today,” he says.

Along with working on his first novel, Maynard will have a collection of essays on Clint Eastwood coming out in early 2018 and will also be one of the writers in Reno Artown’s Literary Death Match on July 13 when writers will go head to head in a boxing ring.

“It’s a cross between a reading and ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ ” says Maynard.

Public print shop Meyers Tahoe Letterpress will open its doors for a studio tour and reception on June 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bona Fide Books.

The print shop will offer hands-on demonstrations and free hand-printed souvenirs to take home. The event is free and open to the public.

The working print shop will provide a letterpress print facility and teach people how to use it. Vintage equipment includes platen presses dating to the 1800s, as well as sign presses. The centerpiece is a collection of handset type housed in four wooden type cabinets. The type comes from the Virginia City “Territorial Enterprise,” the voice of the West during the Comstock era.

Therapeutic exhibit Truckee Image Nation, a new art installation featuring Nevada County veterans, is on display at the Truckee Community Recreation Center until June 30. Image Nation is an initiative of the Nevada County Arts Council in partnership with Welcome Home Vets, funded in part by the California Arts Council and local contributions. The photographs, selfportraits and pictures of veterans’ hands are the result of a therapeutic workshop with veteran and master photographer Michael Llewellyn.

Image Nation helps veterans express themselves and connect with each other and society, a key element in treating post-traumatic stress disorder. Llewellyn, a veteran himself, has been working in photography since 1988.

“I have personal experience with the debilitating social isolation caused by episodes of trauma,” Llewellyn said in a press release. “The practice of photography offered me insight into understanding creative self expression, which contributed to the success of my career.” | tdprd.org

Mexican Art featured at NMOA Reno, Nev. ake no bones about it, Crow and the Canyon are headed south this month for their first official performance in the Tahoe Basin — tour dogs in tow. Fortunately for their canine companions, the Portland folk pickers will be playing at Squaw Valley’s 8th annual Peaks & Paws, a two-day, dog-friendly music, food, beer and wine festival to benefit the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe on June 17 and 18.

“It’s actually kind of funny because we are totally dog people,” says Austin Quattlebaum. “At any given rehearsal, dogs are sleeping in the basement or running around the yard. The band mates without dogs will ask us if it’s going to a two-dog tour. At least my dog has a purpose: he’s the security dog. If you come anywhere near the van, he barks his head off. The other dogs will lick your head.”

With the addition of Audra Nemir on upright bass, this up-and-coming band is beginning to run with the pack of the West Coast folk and bluegrass music scene.

Nemir recently flew the kennel, as it were, for Portland after being hounded out by the ever-rising Bay Area cost of living.

“I knew I couldn’t stay there long term, so I decided to bite the bullet and move,” she says. “Now I’m playing more than I ever have before. Having chosen to focus on music leaves me with more time to write and work on other projects. I’ve really clicked with the band members and I’m having a blast.”

As far as her opinion of dogs in the tour van, Nemir maintains that it depends on the pooch.

“I love having my own dog in the bus, but he’s an older dog so he’s happy to just sit in laps for hours,” she says. “He’s so little and cute and outgoing that he makes friends everywhere we go. The more energetic the dog, the less fun it is to tour with it.”

Even if they can’t quite agree on the pedigree, the band features a fine balance with Leigh Jones’ vocals complementing Quattlebaum on banjo, Ben Larsen on mandolin and Jeremy Elliot on guitar.

“I think that bands can benefit from having some feminine energy in them to encourage some other creative forces,” says Quattlebaum. “Audra has been a good addition for us.”

Crow and the Canyon describe their sound as lyric-driven folkgrass.

“I think oftentimes we get put in the bluegrass category, but we’re definitely not your traditional Flatt and Scruggs,” says Quattlebaum. “A lot like the new acoustic music that’s out and about on the scene nowadays, we lean more towards a lyrical focus than a jamgrass band per say, but we do have those tendencies at a late-night live show.”

The band is currently is the process of planning a followup to their 2015 debut “Leaving Soon.”

“We’ve got a lot of new songs since that album came out, so it’s just a matter of timing right now,” says Quattlebaum. “I think we’ll be hunkering down sometime next winter.”

Quattlebaum honed his love of roots music while growing up around music festivals at the Spirit of the Suwannee

Music Park in Live Oak, Fla., with his family. He began playing banjo during high school in Savanna, Georgia, before minoring in Appalachian folk music at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. During an eight-year stint as an itinerant raft guide and van-touring musician, Quattlebaum was a member of California bluegrass staples such as Sam Chase & The Untraditional and Dead Winter Carpenters’ foremother, The Rusty Buckets. He was passing through Portland toward the end of that era when he connected with Larsen via mutual friend Allie Krall of Yonder Mountain String Band. The two had been collaborating at the time in Larsen’s nowdefunct progressive bluegrass project, The Giraffe Dodgers.

“I met those folk singing and playing and the first time together we arranged a three-part vocal harmony,” he says. “I can’t speak for the whole band, but I’ve always enjoyed folk music because it’s such a family. You can go to a festival and there are bands sitting in with bands, people sitting in with people. You don’t go to rock fests like Coachella and see bands sitting in with each other like that. It’s all a big community.”

magine traveling the world, listening to music and discussing it on a podcast as your life’s purpose. Gardnerville, Nev., native Fil Corbitt is doing just that and his podcast, “Van Sounds,” is making news. An idea inspired by his lust for life and travel, the podcast has received accolades from Outside Magazine, which called “Van Sounds” one of the best podcasts of spring and listed it as “Best Offbeat Travel Audio.”

The concept for the podcast started while Corbitt was touring with a band in 2013.

The roll of the dice deemed which way they would travel.

“I liked being in a tour van, but I don’t live in a van. ‘Van Sounds’ could be from a boat, pickup truck or just on the road,” says Corbitt. “Engaging with new cultures, it informs the experience of what you hear when you’re traveling, whether you are in the middle of Nevada in South America or Asia.”

His nomad treks as a freelance travel writer lead him to interesting music wherever he ends up. According to Corbitt, “The reason I travel is to go and talk to new people and new bands. ‘Van Sounds’ is a podcast about movement, travel and music and the ethos behind the podcast is those things are connected.”

His process for interviews or how he picks and chooses bands for his podcast is not typical. He’s not necessarily covering a new album or band but looking for a deeper story to talk about. His shows are themed based.

“While in Hawaii I ended up talking with a guy in a punk band and realized how isolated it would be to be in a punk band in Maui. This got me to thinking about other bands on other islands,” Corbitt says.

He chatted with the songwriter of “Who Let the Dogs Out,” who lives in Trinidad and also happened to be a musician performing Soca music, a genre of Caribbean music.

“Van Sounds” includes a series of episodes in Peru where he was hired to

“If we rolled 1, we’d drive north; 2, we’d head east; 3, go south and so on. We’d find ourselves in Vegas or out west somewhere.

It was a cool randomized adventure,” says Corbitt. “I thought I’d find big answers to some big questions and instead there were short glimpses, fleeting moments and ideas that came and went. I was constantly in pursuit but never catching it. The journey was to be in the moment and learning to be OK with it and enjoy it.”

Corbitt is a musician and plays drums, banjo and guitar in a band called “People with Bodies.” While traveling with his band he writes his stories. The band released a new album entitled, “Con Querpo,” which means “with body” in Spanish.

“There is really great music, really great people in a lot of places. The more you look, the more there is and if you dig through stuff, there is always something good,” he says. His hope is to explore what it’s like to be a band, playing music in another culture or another genre, such as punk, for instance — or as he puts it, “bringing the realm of culture the listener might not necessarily get otherwise.”

any homeowners generally frown upon the forsaken dandelion but this wildflower has a number of virtues.

They are both edible and medicinal. Considered a weed in most parts of the country, they pop up in manicured lawns and multiply. Here in Tahoe, the dandelion is another one of the many beautiful wildflowers that dot the majestic landscape.

In recent weeks, dandelions have popped up everywhere and are growing like weeds (pun intended).

The word dandelion comes from “dent de lion” in French and means “tooth of the lion” named for the jagged, tooth-like edges of the leaves. It has been used as a medicinal herb for thousands of years. In fact, the entire dandelion is edible from the bright happy yellow flowers to the milky stem and serrated green leaves. The plant can be eaten raw or cooked.

The root of the dandelion can be dried and roasted for a coffee-like beverage.

To prepare the coffee substitute, clean the roots, chop and lay them out on a sheet pan and roast in the oven at 325 degrees F for 1.5 to 2 hours. Once roasted, steep them in boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes.

The flowers of the dandelion can be used to make tea, which can be beneficial for digestion, detoxification and cleansing.

The tea supports liver and kidney function and helps with hydration. Dandelion tea is readily available at health-food stores.

The dandelion can also increase urine production and serve as a mild laxative.

Rich in vitamin C, fiber, potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and phosphorus, the dandelion leaves can be harvested at any point in the growing season and are great in salads. Add goat cheese, veggies, roasted almonds to the leaves and top with delicious honey Dijon dressing.

As a side dish, sauté the greens in a touch of olive oil and garlic with a pinch of Himalayan sea salt before serving. The leaves can sometimes be a tad bitter; some people feel the younger leaves are the less bitter they are. Still, others enjoy the taste of bitter greens.

Another recipe people make are fried dandelion fritters. They can be prepared savory or sweet and are a fun project to make with the kids.

Dandelion wine is also made using the petals of the flower. There are a number of recipes floating around on the Internet.

Fentimans makes a fermented Dandelion & Burdock beverage, which is an infusion of dandelion leaves and burdock root, sweetened with pear juice and spiced with a touch of ginger and anise.

There are some things to consider when using dandelions. Avoid picking dandelions in areas where pesticides may have been sprayed or that grow along the roadside. If you have allergies to ragweed, the dandelion may cause a reaction.

Many of the local farmers’ markets sell dandelion greens. But, if you are looking for something fun to do, find a field, bring a basket and load up on the wildflower.

nce upon a time in Spain, a creative party planner mixed some spicy red wine with fresh fruit and a pinch of spice and, ¡eso,! Sangria.

A great basic Sangria is a classic, so our wine is Garnacha because it’s from Spain and because it’s almost always a dry wine with bright fruit and spice — the backbone of real Sangria. Evodia is a widely available version that rocks.

If you are going white, the fresh fruit palate changes to more yellow and green citrus, as well as peaches, apricots and apples.

Next up is fresh fruit, starting with citrus. For red Sangria stay on the orange side of the street with slices of orange and tangerine and be sure to include the peel to get the zest. Next up are cherries and berries that bring more flavors and the skins bring more color and some tannin structure. Stop here because most other fruits clash with and muddle red Sangria. Also select only barely ripe fruit because this retains the freshness essential to true Sangria.

Now, for the spices, we’ll go fresh and pungent: ginger, nutmeg and star anise work well. Use restraint to avoid overpowering the elixir.

Other Spanish reds that rock are young Monastrells, Mencias and Tempranillos.

More recently those prone to sacrilege have used white wine and you can’t go wrong with a Spanish Rueda, Viura and Cava. If you are going white, the fresh fruit palate changes to more yellow and green citrus, as well as peaches, apricots and apples. Avoid the spices with white Sangrias because you will bury the fruit and wine.

If you want to add a spirit, stick with brandies, not sugary liqueurs. Remember, less is more. For bubbles, you can use Cava as a base and add your favorite sparkling water.

Last but not least is serving temperature. With logic as our guide, we’ll go chilled in summer and warm in winter.

Winter Sangrias can also benefit from cookie spices such as a good pumpkin pie spice mix.

You could find wines from these grapes from other regions, but don’t since the Spanish versions are great bargains and have the authentic tonguedancing characteristics we want for Sangria. Same thing for pre-made Sangrias — don’t.

All this Spanish wine, fruit, spice and spirit just scream for a party — a Sangria party. Just as with a taco party, there is more fun to be had by creating a Sangria bar. Start with white and red wine options, throw in a bottle of sparkling water or wine, a variety of fruits, sweet tangy spices and maybe even some brandy. Now let the guests create and you’ve got a fiesta de Sangria. ¡Ole! 

n the last issue, I talked about guacamole and how it is not just a chip dip. I’ve had a couple of inquiries about salsa; so as a follow up to guacamole, here is another chip dip that has so many more uses.

Usually, when salsa is mentioned, the thought goes to a red tomato salsa. Look through some menus and you will see that there are a lot more ingredients for salsa than just tomatoes — even tomato salsa has many looks and tastes. There are some that are chunky and others that are pureed. Also, the spice level can vary greatly.

Some, for instance, are smoky in flavor.

So, salsa is not limited to tomatoes.

There are salsas made with an array of vegetables that can be modified by changing the main ingredient. For example, a black bean salsa can contain corn, but if you add so much corn it overwhelms the black beans, then it’s a corn salsa. All the other ingredients can remain the same. In fact, the ingredients are interchangeable and in all salsas in some amounts.

Another way to easily change a salsa is to change the herbs and spices. Using the corn salsa again as an example, add some cumin, chili powder and chipotle pepper for more of a Southwest-style salsa that goes great with a smoked or grilled pork chop.

Salsa is not only relegated to vegetables.

Although veggie salsas might seem more common and versatile, there is also the fruit salsa. To me, fruit salsa is one of the best. It is often used with fish or poultry, but is equally as good sitting on a chip.

Just be sure to hide the bowls because people will want to eat it as they would a fruit salad. It is really a refreshing addition to the dinner menu on those hot summer nights.

Like the vegetable salsas, fruit salsa will carry the name of the main ingredient.

That does not mean there is the only one fruit in it. I will usually include a little cantaloupe and honeydew melon no matter what the main fruit is. Those melons have a fairly light and crisp flavor that will compliment a strong fruit such as pineapple, but will not overpower a lighter fruit such as a peach or plum.

No matter what kind of salsa, some ingredients are always included. The only difference is the amount of each used,

which depends on individual taste. The ingredients in all of my salsas include olive oil and vinegar. I prefer to use rice vinegar, but will also use raspberry vinegar for some fruit salsas. The other ingredients are garlic, jalapeño pepper, hot sauce, sweet red onion, cilantro, and salt and pepper.

To decide whether or not to add a little more of something, take a few tablespoons of your salsa and put it in another bowl.
