It’s so wonderful to see so many pictures and hear so many stories of collegians and alumnae gathering again for meetings, meals, and Founders’ Day. It’s been so long since we’ve seen our sisters! I’m so glad that we can “fill our Theta Phi cups” with the joy that our sisters bring to us.

Letter from the Editor

This is what I thought about when putting together this issue. The joy of our sisterhood, and the joy of being so close to convening for National Convention! We are in the midst of all the wonderful pre-Convention planning and everyone is getting excited! It’s been wonderful to see so many faces via Zoom, but I am excited to see each other in-person this summer.

Jerry Lee Lewis said, “I’m goin’ to Memphis where the beat is tough... Memphis, I can’t get enough... It makes you tremble and it makes you weak... Gets in your blood, that Memphis Beat.” Can’t wait to have Theta Phi Alpha beat in my heart!

MESSAGE FROM our PRESIDENT Theta Phi Alpha has dedicated itself to continuing to improve the membership experience. The Compass in digital form is just another example of that continuous improvement effort. The first edition was published in June of 1921 in booklet form, in black ink only. With the new digital format, we are able to utilize many colors, beautiful graphics, and detailed pictures – taking advantage of technology!

We are making improvements in many other areas as well. The National Constitution and Bylaws Committee worked extremely hard to draft a revised document for National Convention consideration. The Ritual Committee also worked hard to understand the membership by surveying over 1,000 members before submitting their proposals for Convention. I hope you were able to attend one of the proposed motions webinars and asked questions or watched a recording on our website. Additionally, we tweaked our volunteer appointment process and took advantage of an opportunity with a vineyard. These updates were made possible by the volunteers and staff who have gone before us. With all of the changes, we seek to stay true to the Creed and Mission of Theta Phi Alpha... To provide close comradeship; to advance educational, social, and philanthropic interests and leadership training; to encourage spiritual development and adherence to the highest moral standards; and to promote lifelong bonds of friendship; a fraternity for college and university women and alumnae.

I wish to thank all of the volunteers of Theta Phi Alpha, including the past, present, and future members who give their time, talent, and treasure!

A special thank you to the writers, editors, and collaborators who have contributed to the 101 years of The Compass.

In Theta Phi Alpha’s 110th year, we now celebrate the 101st anniversary of this very magazine.

Chi Alumna Receives Panhellenic Women of Distinction Award Kate Glow Schram, C, was recently awarded a 2022 Women of Distinction Award from the Omaha Alumnae Panhellenic Association (OAPA). The award was recently presented at OAPA’s Gathering of the Greeks, which celebrates collegians and alumnae with awards and scholarships. Kate currently serves Theta Phi Alpha as the Alumnae Appeal Coordinator on the NVP-A team. She is also a past Leadership Consultant and alumnae association president.

The Kappa Chapter of Theta Phi Alpha will be celebrating its Centennial this fall. The chapter was originally charted on May 4, 1922, at the University of Pittsburgh and was the former local sorority Epsilon Pi Epsilon. Kappa Chapter has provided Theta Phi Alpha with many National Officers in the past 100 years, including seven Guard of Honor wearers.

QFA Welcomes New National Office Staff Theta Phi Alpha is proud to announce the appointments of Jennifer King, as the organization’s new Director of Communications and Brianna Parker, Z, Coordinator of Growth and Outreach.

Jennifer joins the National Office staff bringing extensive experience collectively in financial services, leadership, event planning, marketing, and brand awareness. She has worked with TVOne, WPMI new station, iHeartMedia, created and executed an annual conference through ICME Events called Ready, Set, Grow for business entrepreneurs which is now going into its fourth year. Jennifer earned her Master of Business Administration at Virginia College and her Bachelor of Science in Political Science – Legal Studies at Kennesaw State University.

Brianna joins the National Office staff having two years of experience as a Leadership Consultant for Theta Phi Alpha. She brings her knowledge of the organization and experience in supporting Emerging Chapters and Collegiate Chapters. Brianna is a graduate of Indiana University, where she was a member of our Zeta Chapter and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Media.

Changes to Elections procedures effective March 2022 In an effort to improve the experience and efficiency of the election process during National Convention, the Board of Trustees is implementing several changes this biennium.

Effective immediately (March 2022) candidates are now allowed to submit consent to serve forms for more than one elected office.

This offer is being extended retroactively to everyone who has already submitted a consent to serve, and will remain in place for any new candidates up until the 2022 National Convention.

All members should visit the Meet the Candidates page on the Theta Phi Alpha website to view a full list of candidates, view each candidate’s profile page, and learn more about the election information. We plan to host webinar event(s) in the near future, which will provide additional opportunities to meet the candidates in a question/answer format.

The more prepared your voting delegate can be prior to Convention, the better.

As always, we encourage friendly campaigning. We are all passionate about Theta Phi Alpha. We can be passionate and disagree, but remember we are all sisters wanting the best for Theta Phi Alpha. Please refrain from communications of any sort, or statements toward or regarding other candidates that do not align with the values of Theta Phi Alpha. Sisters involved in negative campaigning may be referred to the Grand Council (collegians) or Alumnae Standards Board (alumnae) for disciplinary action.

We will also be using an online cloud-based voting program at Convention. This new process will hopefully make our elections more accessible, personalized, user-friendly, and more secure. Each delegate will need access to a computer or mobile device to cast their vote.

QFA DEIA SPRING 2022 UPDATE

L

ooking back at 2020 – a year that will be remembered for a variety of reasons. Theta Phi Alpha will remember that year as the year that our BIPOC sisters told us how much they are hurting and challenged us to look at Theta Phi Alpha through a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access (DEIA). In the summer of 2020, the Fraternity solicited volunteers to be a part of the DEIA Task Force. Thirty-seven members expressed interest in being on the task force.

Darcy-Tell Morales, GE, Nathali Zamora, GP and Antoinette Cummins, BG, volunteered as our dedicated cochairmen who led the DEIA Task Force through the important work.

On August 12, 2020, an Open Letter to the Grand Council, Board of Trustees, National Office, and our White Sisters was shared and signed by over 240 members. The letter addressed areas of concern and areas to be examined.

The letter also served as a guide for the Grand Council and the DEIA Task Force. The Grand Council appreciates the continuous work of the DEIA Task Force, along with the committee members who had worked on proposal for this year’s National Convention.

As a result of the task force, Theta Phi Alpha has conducted the following activities since the Spring 2021 Update: • An Inclusivity Excellence Assessment was sent July 2021 to all members to collect feedback on their individual perspectives and experiences as a member of Theta Phi Alpha. This is currently being used as a guide to help us inform the DEIA Task Force of our next steps to work through.

• A DEIA standing committee was created by the Grand Council with a succession plan to continue the work of the task force in evaluating our practices and policies.

• The Ritual Committee was created to make recommendations for changes to our Ritual to account for accessibility that was submitted to be reviewed at National Convention 2022.

• The National Constitution and Bylaws Committee was created to recommend changes to our current governing process to address DEIA areas and operational challenges brought to light by the pandemic. These changes have been submitted for review at National Convention 2022.

• Demographic questions were added to the profile setup process on the Theta Phi Alpha portal to capture more information about our members which will aid in the process to create more programs that match our member needs.

• The “Report a Concern” page was created as part of the biased incident management process and moved to the homepage on Theta Phi Alpha intranet to provide a visible location for reporting. You can read more about this here.

• A DEIA training was conducted in July 2021 that discussed how to reframe what diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) looks like in our organization.

• During this year's National Convention, we will be touring the National Civil Rights Museum, where attendees will be provided with reflective questions following the completion of the tour.

The Grand Council thanks our members who brought concerns to our attention. We recognize that our Black and Brown sisters face challenges that are often unseen or acknowledged by our White sisters. We are committed to making Theta Phi Alpha better for all members and acknowledge that diversity, equity, inclusion, and access will need to be continually addressed for Theta Phi Alpha to have a sustainable future.

Epsilon Alumna Fires Up the Kitchen Interview questions by Lauren Svec Gallo, Beta Beta, Director of Publication

J

ordan Hamons, E, is the chef and owner of Tablespoon Cooking Co., a Cincinnati-based culinary business that hosts online and in-person cooking classes and demonstrations to teach cooks of all skill levels to master their kitchen craft or simply learn an easy weeknight dinner and gain a little confidence in the kitchen.

We were able to chat with Jordan about Tablespoon, Theta Phi Alpha, and one of my favorite things...

Disney (and especially Disney food)!

How did you start Tablespoon and what was your inspiration/ thought behind the start?

JH: Tablespoon started slowly and really just as something to do for fun. I had left a job as a corporate chef and was working on a food and travel blog. I missed being around people and a mentor suggested I teach cooking classes. I taught a few classes at local cooking schools and

really enjoyed it! However, I wanted to put my own spin on things so I started teaching my own classes in a shared kitchen space called Findlay Kitchen. I started with just one or two classes per month, but they went well and I was having fun so I gradually added more. The business grew from there and led to us opening our own storefront at Findlay Market.

Jessica Holthaus Ballman, E, is the sister who shared your business with us, especially noting that you were doing weekly donations to Last Mile Food Rescue last year. Can you share some information and thoughts about that?

JH: At Tablespoon, our menus change every day based on what classes we are offering. This is great because we never get bored, but it makes food waste a challenge. We have been lucky to find great partners such as La Soupe, Last Mile Food Rescue, and Our Daily Bread, where we can donate any food to and they will use it to feed the people they serve. We are also part of Findlay Market’s composting program.

I see from your website that you have a team of 12, including yourself, that covers customer service, marketing, and culinary. Did you know everyone that is on your team or were they recruited another way? Does anyone specialize in any particular types of food or dishes, or does everyone generally teach a mix of classes?

different career path and that led to me pursuing my culinary training at Cincinnati State. After finishing the program there, I was working at American Financial Group as a corporate chef. I then started a blog, which led to teaching cooking classes and then led to the start of Tablespoon.

How did Theta Phi Alpha (Epsilon Chapter then alumna) impact your journey, both (generally) in life and in your career?

JH: We’ve had people join our team in different ways – anything from walking by our store and being curious to being referred to us by a friend who came to a class. We have a mix of team members and everyone brings something different to the table.

Some staff members teach classes and others focus on the backend operations or other job functions. It’s a small team and everyone contributes to get the job done.

JH: Epsilon Chapter gave me leadership opportunities when I served as Parent and Alumnae Chairman, Recruitment Chairman, and Chapter President. Looking back now, it was a small glimpse into some of the aspects of running a business such as managing people, budgets, marketing, etc. I look back so fondly on my time in Theta Phi Alpha [Epsilon Chapter] and still keep in touch with so many of our sisters, who are my lifelong friends. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Was this something you always had a thought about doing? Did you start your culinary journey elsewhere before getting here?

What was your path?

Where does Tablespoon go next? I see you have resumed in-person classes and still have virtual classes on the website, as well as private events too.

JH: It all happened pretty organically.

I studied marketing at the University of Cincinnati and was planning on starting a career in fashion merchandising. My plan for after graduation was to join the leadership program at JCPenney in Dallas, but the company was performing poorly and the program was canceled and the offer was rescinded a few weeks before I was set to move there. I ended up deciding I wanted to look into a

JH: In June 2021, we opened our new storefront at 1731 Elm Street in the heart of Findlay Market. This was a labor of love and the historic approval and construction process took nearly three years. We were happy in our new home and were off to a great start with our kids’ summer camps, corporate team building events, and a full calendar of cooking classes. We were also offering virtual classes for private events as well. Unfortunately,

on December 23, 2021, a tenant in the apartment above us went to sleep with a candle lit and a small fire caused massive water damage to our space. After several weeks of intensive water mitigation, we have had to redo pretty much our entire interior. We’ve been closed since the fire but we are planning to reopen this spring or early summer. It’s been a major setback so our next step is to get back up and running and come back better than ever.

What have been your most popular dishes/classes? What's one class you haven't done yet that you would love to do?

JH: Our most popular classes are Tacos and Margaritas, Fried Chicken and Champagne, and Pizza and Wine.

Seasonally, Holiday Pies, Holiday Cookie Decorating and Christmas Pasta Dinner are huge hits. One class that I’ve always wanted to do is a cheesecake class but the timing makes it tough. I also hope to add more international classes and have teachers from those cultures and cuisines teach the classes.

I am also a HUGE Disney person!

What is your favorite Disney restaurant and meal? Is there a place that you haven't been yet and would like to visit?

JH: Oh wow, I love all things Disney!

The most memorable meal was in December 2020 at Victoria and Albert’s at the Grand Floridian [Resort & Spa]. We were lucky enough to book the Chef’s Table, which is right in the kitchen. The chef comes over and presents every course and you have a private server and host

for the evening. It was spectacular and definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience! On our last trip, we ate at the new Steakhouse 71 at the Contemporary Resort. This is themed like 1971 when Walt Disney World opened. We ended up going back twice in one trip because we loved it so much! My goal is to visit every Disney Park. So far, I’ve been to Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland, and Aulani in Hawaii.

I need to go to Tokyo Disney and Shanghai Disney… and hopefully they build another park at some point!

INGREDIENTS 2 c. (400 g) granulated sugar 2 sticks (8 oz.) unsalted butter softened 6 (about 3 cups) bananas very ripe, peeled and mashed

JH: As for what's next for Tablespoon, we are looking forward to reopening this spring and focusing on building our team and growing the business with more classes and events.

1 tsp. vanilla extract 2.5 c. (300 grams) cake flour or all-purpose flour 2 tsp. baking soda 1 tbsp. baking powder 2 tsp. kosher salt Turbinado sugar (for sprinkling on top)

PREPARATION

Jordan currently lives in Cincinnati.

She is a graduate of the Lindner Honors-PLUS Program at the University of Cincinnati Lindner College of Business and completed her culinary training at Midwest Culinary Institute.

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Prepare two loaf pans by spraying with nonstick spray, and cutting a piece of parchment to fit as a sling (fitted width-wise to easily lift cake out). Place the parchment in the bottom of each pan and set aside.

In a mixing bowl, using a hand mixer or stand mixer with paddle attachment, cream together sugar and softened butter until fluffy, making sure to scrape down the bowl. Add in mashed bananas, eggs and vanilla, mix to combine.

In another mixing bowl, whisk together cake flour, baking soda, baking powder, and kosher salt.

Add dry ingredients to butter mixture, and using a rubber spatula, fold dry into wet until no dry

flour remains.

Divide batter evenly into prepared loaf pans, smooth out the top, and sprinkle a layer of turbinado sugar (We love a nice crunchy topping!).

Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out mostly clean and the top is nicely browned. This is a very moist cake that you don’t want to over-bake, so a few crumbs clinging to a cake tester/toothpick is good!

To store, wrap bread tightly in plastic wrap and keep at room temperature for up to seven days.

This bread can also be frozen.

Foundation

W

hile we are now the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation, we had a different name at our 1959 founding. The Founders’ Foundation of Theta Phi Alpha was founded not only to recognize the founders of Theta Phi Alpha, but also the founders of Pi Lambda Sigma. The two sororities had merged just a few years earlier in 1952.

The Pi Lambda Sigma sorority shared a Catholic heritage, despite their original intention to be nonsectarian. At their June 24, 1921, founding at Boston University College of Liberal Arts, the ten women felt a sorority would be the best way for these commuter students to form lasting friendships. Through expansion, Pi Lambda Sigma was represented on eight campuses. The sorority had a national magazine, jewel (pearl), flower (Marguerite daisy), colors (white and gold), motto, badge, insignia, and all the things one would associate with a sorority.

Pi Lambda Sigma chose to pursue a merger and Theta Phi Alpha was selected from three proposals received.

Two campuses had chapters that would be merged: the aforementioned chapter at Boston University (Eta) and the University of Cincinnati (Epsilon). Two chapters were added to Theta Phi Alpha’s roster: Creighton University (Chi) and Quincy College (Psi).

Pi Lambda Sigma brought more than chapters to the table, but also assets to contribute to provide academic scholarships.

The impetus to create the Foundation was a direct result of the merger with Pi Lambda Sigma and their wish to provide a lasting legacy.

The first two scholarships were granted by the Foundation in 1961. Pat Punch (now Beckmeyer) of Epsilon Chapter, received a grant of $250. How fitting that a sister of the merged chapter at Epsilon was the first recipient of a Foundation scholarship? Janet Previtt (now Clair) of Kappa Chapter received a grant of $100.

In the first decade of the Foundation, $6,200 in scholarships were granted to 25 sisters. The scholarship grant program

has grown – during the past decade, $156,000 was awarded to 124 sisters. The Foundation now has six endowed scholarships, one biannual scholarship, and four funds working towards endowment.

As the Foundation expanded its efforts beyond scholarships, the name was changed to Theta Phi Alpha Foundation. Support of leadership education, the national philanthropies, and relief grants are the cornerstones of the Foundation’s current efforts.

Our alumnae may remember our arguably most famous Pi Lam alumna, Ruth Meister Thompson, E. Ruth worked on creating the merger of Pi Lambda Sigma with Theta Phi Alpha. Ruth continued to volunteer for Theta Phi Alpha for over six decades, while raising eight children; some of her daughters became legacy initiates. As wearer of the Guard of Honor, Ruth served on the Grand Council, Board of Trustees, and NPC Delegation.

Dolly Chugh is an awardwinning professor at the New York University Stern School of Business where she teaches Master of Business Administration courses in leadership and management. Her research focuses on “bounded ethicality,” which she describes as the “psychology of good people.”

chapter news briefs Check out what some of our chapters have been up to since last spring!

EPSILON – UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI conducted their first complete in-person Initiation since the fall of 2019. They organized a Homecoming alumnae tailgate, brought back the popular Taco Phi Alpha fundraiser, and got back in touch with the Panhellenic community. The chapter hosted their annual Body Positivity Campaign week. This was the first time that participation was open to the entire Greek community. The chapter is currently planning for their first annual philanthropy week, ending with Thrift Phi Alpha and White Rose Formal to cap off a successful year.

KAPPA – UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH had a successful recruitment and welcomed 35 new members into the chapter! The chapter also hosted their annual philanthropy event benefitting Camp Friendship, selling pumpkins and t-shirts to sisters and friends and raised over $500 in only one day. Sisters also enjoyed date parties, social events, mixers, and a sisterhood retreat. In January 2022, Kappa Chapter participated in their first in-person recruitment in two years and welcomed 40 amazing new members!

ALPHA PI – WAYNE STATE COLLEGE welcomed 27 new sisters in 2021! They held a Double Good fundraiser and split the profits between our national philanthropies and a local nonprofit, Haven House. The chapter participated in a Color Run philanthropy event and won Best Song and Dance (and were the overall winners) of Greek Olympics!

Sisters made and donated frozen dinners for the Norfolk Rescue Mission.

ALPHA PSI – UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON welcomed 13 new members last year! They volunteered at a local art gallery and participated in UD’s tradition of Christmas on Campus by hosting a cookie decorating room for children from the Dayton area. The chapter hosted their annual fall philanthropy event, Fall Fest, and raised over $800 for St. Vincent de Paul.

ALPHA BETA – LOYOLA UNIVERSITY - NEW ORLEANS had a hard start to their fall semester with Hurricane Ida hitting New Orleans in September. As soon as they were allowed back on campus, they volunteered with SBP to create safe living environments for families with unlivable homes. Formal recruitment was pushed back as well, leaving the chapter to recruit in the spring. Even with those setbacks, the chapter gained 14 new members!

BETA BETA – THE COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY welcomed three new member classes, including 31 members this spring. The chapter hosted their annual philanthropy week in the fall with Pie-a-Theta Phi, a pizzeria fundraiser, and Theta Phi Cutie Pie event. They also used social media to fundraise for the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen through bingo on their Instagram stories.

BETA CHI – MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE enjoyed sisterhood skate at Wheel Thing Skate Center and welcomed five new sisters into the chapter. Members participated in Greek Week activities and raised $643 with a rock-a-thon benefitting the HOOT Resource Center in Marshall, as well as $400 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation from a football game fundraiser. The chapter won $100 during virtual trivia night on their campus and enjoyed a pjs and pizza sisterhood night.

BETA GAMMA – FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON UNIVERSITY, COLLEGE AT FLORHAM raised over $7,000 during Red Week, the chapter’s philanthropy week, which raised money for the American Heart Association.

BETA THETA – ST. FRANCIS COLLEGE initiated three new members this past fall. The chapter volunteered at the Women's Help Center in Johnstown, Penn., and sponsored a t-shirt fundraiser for the center, raising nearly $1,000. Three sisters finished the semester with a 4.0 GPA.

BETA LAMBDA – UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN-FLINT held recruitment, formal, and Initiation. They also participated in a breast cancer walk.

GAMMA DELTA – ROWAN UNIVERSITY raised over $2,500 for Feeding America during their annual Mr. Greek pageant last spring. Between 2021 and early spring 2022, the chapter raised over $7,500 in their philanthropic efforts towards numerous organizations including Camp Friendship, Autism Speaks, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. When in-person events couldn't take place on campus, many sisters participated in virtual 5Ks and needed item drives. The chapter participated in virtual recruitment in spring 2021 and welcomed a total of 70 new members in the three recruitment periods.

BETA SIGMA – RAMAPO COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY hosted their annual Wild 'N Out event and raised $403 for Glenmary Home Missioners, as well as sponsored their annual Home Run Derby and raised over $800 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Over the fall semester, the chapter raised $2,600 for breast cancer research and awareness. The chapter participated in Theta Phi Day of Service and put together Blizzard Boxes with nonperishable food items for Meals on Wheels.

News Briefs GAMMA EPSILON – SHAWNEE STATE UNIVERSITY hosted a parent luncheon and played a trivia game called “How Well Do You Know Your Daughter?”. They also had a competition of which family could bring in the most canned goods, which were donated to the food pantry on campus. The chapter held a tie-blanket making event and made cards to send to the local nursing home during the holiday season. They sponsored a Piea-Theta-Phi philanthropy event and a volleyball tournament as well. Eight new members joined the chapter last year.

GAMMA ZETA – TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY-KINGSVILLE initiated 13 new women. The chapter hosted events for the families at LULAC-Kingsville during Halloween and Easter, as well as visited a local nursing home to spread some love with cards and treats this past Valentine’s Day. The chapter hosted virtual philanthropy fundraisers and raised over $1,000. A huge highlight for the chapter was being the top fundraising team at the campus’s Dance Marathon with over $2,000 in donations for Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. The chapter also came in first place in Greek Games!

GAMMA MU – CLARKSON UNIVERSITY welcomed three new members last spring and participated in Relay for Life, where they raised $1,100. Sisters cleaned their adopted portion of the local highway near campus through Adopt-a-Highway.

GAMMA CHI – STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY welcomed 17 new sisters in 2021. The chapter held a Bingo for Boobies philanthropy event, and sponsored risk management presentation with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) on campus. They also held their two annual fundraisers, a crepe night and a French toast night.

GAMMA OMEGA – TRINE UNIVERSITY sponsored their annual Big Man on Campus fundraiser and raised $24,347.18 for the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer.

Since 2015, the event has raised over $82,500 for the Vera Bradley Foundation.

DELTA BETA – ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE sponsored a toy drive for their local philanthropy, the John Theissen Children’s Foundation and raised over $1,500 for a breast cancer walk. The chapter enjoyed many sisterhood nights and welcomed 19 new members.

DELTA DELTA – ASHLAND UNIVERSITY raised just under $10,000 for Camp Friendship over the past two Sapphire Ball events. Eight new members joined the chapter. The chapter enjoyed mixers and events with every Greek organization on campus.

DELTA EPSILON – RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE fundraised for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and raised $4,356! The chapter welcomed seven new members last year. Sisterhood events included bowling, apple picking, a clothing swap, game nights, and much more.

DELTA ZETA – ST. CLOUD UNIVERSITY enjoyed a sisterhood and bonding retreat and welcomed six new women last year. The chapter held an online philanthropy event to support Camp Friendship and made and donated tie blankets for Theta Phi Day of Service.

GAMMA OMICRON – UTICA COLLEGE sponsored many fundraisers, including a pancake breakfast, and many philanthropy and service projects, including working with a local Stuff the Bus. Sisters enjoyed a Friendsgiving event as well as other sisterhood events. The chapter received the Inter-Greek Council Award for Academic Excellence.

DELTA ETA – SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY welcomed 16 new sisters last year and celebrated five years as a chapter! The chapter sponsored a workshop on bystander intervention and two programs with the PEAR (Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Response) Program on campus – one about consent and one about healthy/unhealthy relationships.

They enjoyed a Harry Potter-themed mixer with the Beta Psi Chapter and a sisterhood retreat. Their popcorn fundraiser raised over $2,000 for the chapter!

DELTA THETA – HARTWICK COLLEGE held several recruitment events such as movie nights, making s'mores, and painting canvases, and initiated 11 new members last year. The chapter also sponsored multiple educational and

risk management workshops, including managing stress and substance abuse education.

DELTA LAMBDA – MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY hosted a Hunger and Homelessness Awareness leadership workshop. The chapter held their Campus Feud fundraiser and raised over $1,500, donating the funds to Morris Habitat for Humanity and Camp Friendship. They also welcomed the Iota New Member Class.

DELTA MU – MARIAN UNIVERSITY held many different events, including a Kahoot night, arts and crafts sisterhood event, and a family game night. They also sponsored a finals week care packages fundraiser. Their service events included a feminine hygiene drive, a clothing drive, and donating gift bags to a women’s shelter, as well as preparing and delivering meals to the homeless population in the Indianapolis area. AKRON AREA resumed their monthly social breakfasts, including one in February titled, “The Month of Love” breakfast, which brought many guests and spouses, as well as Delta Delta Chapter sisters.

They also participated in a memorial mass at St. Sebastian Parish in Akron to honor their Eternal Chapter sisters. The association sponsored an Evergeens Fundraiser for Hattie Larlham and Glenmary Missions. The association also enjoyed a holiday breakfast and gift exchange, with so many penguin gifts!

and had a bonfire at the beginning of the semester to welcome everyone back to campus. Sisterhood events included pumpkin painting, a Halloween movie marathon, a canvas painting exchange, Friendsgiving, a gingerbread house competition, and a Christmas movie night.

DELTA XI – MOUNT ST. JOSEPH UNIVERSITY volunteered at Snows Lakeside Tavern for their annual Down Syndrome Awareness benefit. Sisters participated by selling raffle tickets and split-the-pot to patrons at the event.

DELTA OMICRON – SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE UNIVERSITY participated in their first in-person recruitment season this past fall and welcome five new members. Sisters enjoyed bonding with events like movie night, apple picking, and “Sistersgiving.”

The chapter held a backpack drive for a local philanthropy, New Horizons, and gathered supplies needed for the homeless.

CHICAGO AREA held a brunch in September and their annual Stocking Stuffer event in November. They took advantage of a beautiful fall day to collect and stuff 132 stockings for Catholic Charities of Chicago. The association also educated two new alumnae new members/legacies and Initiation is scheduled for April.

FLINT AREA held a virtual meeting in the spring of 2021. They gathered for lunch and sisterhood in October and celebrated the holidays with a virtual gathering in early January. This past winter, they also started a book club.

HOUSTON AREA is working on putting together a virtual get together toward the end of the month. Stay tuned to their social media pages in the next couple weeks.

GREATER CINCINNATI has been busy supporting the Epsilon and Delta Xi Chapters!

Alumnae filled roles on both Advisory Boards, provided late night snacks and pizza to Epsilon Chapter during recruitment, and are excited to help send Delta Xi Chapter to their first National Convention! They are excited to plan the first in-person Founders’ Day since 2019.

News Briefs the few in-person activities, connecting at sisters’ weddings was one of the highlights of the year. Sisters were able to gather and continue the tradition of singing White Rose to the bride!

GREATER CLEVELAND donated strings bags to Metro Hospital last spring. They held a wreath fundraiser and gathered, wrapped, and delivered Christmas gifts to a second-grade classroom in Cleveland.

They also held their annual holiday part at Slymens. The association donated a raffle basket for Cleveland Area Panhellenic Association’s (CAPA) spring scholarship luncheon and Linda Barath, AX, is on her second term as the president of CAPA.

LINCOLN AREA continued to connect virtually this past year holding their annual meeting via Zoom where sisters were able to provide updates on family, work, and other activities going on in their day-to-day. Of

NORTHERN NEW JERSEY enjoyed a virtual Founders’ Day with a chocolate tasting event.

The association also sponsored a “Socktober” philanthropy event in October for the Crescent Hearts Foundation, where they published an Amazon wish list and asked sisters, family, and friends to donate socks and other toiletry items. Over 216 pairs of socks, plus additional toiletries, were donated to Crescent Hearts to pass out to the homeless population in New Jersey.

The association also has an alumna initiate that they are excited to initiate in April with the Beta Xi Chapter!

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA is preparing for the Initiation of Barbara Horner, daughter of Esther Martin, P, before National Convention. An in-person Founders’ Day is also planned for April at Taix's restaurant in Los Angeles.

Founders’ Day Proclamation April 30, 2022 One hundred and ten years ago, our 10 Founders established the framework for Theta Phi Alpha. Omega Upsilon was our first attempt to start a Catholic women’s organization at the University of Michigan, but it did not flourish. From the need to adapt, Theta Phi Alpha came to be. On August 30th,1912, Amelia, May, Helen, Selma and Mildred gathered at the College Club in Detroit, Michigan, for tea and serious discussion about the need for developing something sustainable at the University of Michigan1. They discussed ordering pins and the arrangements to file the Articles of Incorporation. That was the day they chose our name and motto.

When those brave women were studying at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, their options were very limited compared to ours today. They were not allowed in the Michigan Union on campus, where we dined during our 2012 Centennial Celebration. There was no campus housing available for the few hundred female students. None of our members had the right to vote in 1912 nor could they serve on a jury in every state. Even our life expectancy was limited, at less than 52 years. Despite those limitations, or maybe because of them, our Founders came together to create an organization that has survived and thrived!

As an organization, truth, justice, and friendship have sustained us through five pandemics prior to the current one. We are here today due to the resiliency and vision of all those who have previously served.

We are here today because we have endured and changed with the times. As we press forward in creating more moments to leave as part of our legacy, we will continue to achieve great things.

While Theta Phi Alpha continues on the path to greatness, we have simultaneously been reviewing our policies and practices for inclusivity and access. This access will allow us to create more opportunities while including different and new voices to be heard at the table. Being provided with added insights and perspectives as we continue to grow as one, we are making changes for the better and addressing programming needs of our members, while we continue to stay true to our mission and on the course towards greatness.

Whether you are together virtually or in-person, I hope that you will gather together in the bonds of friendship and sisterhood, celebrating how far we have come in 110 years!
