It’s almost the end of 2023!

I say this at the end of every year, but I feel like this year has flown.

Letter from the Editor

I’ve recently been working and talking with other Theta Phis about different projects, stories, and other happenings for The Compass and other assignments.

The feelings of fulfillment and happiness that I’m left with after these conversations are because of these sisters and how they fill my cup and my heart. Sometimes working on Theta Phi projects and tasks can be stressful and exhausting, but it’s the people and special times that really make it all worth it.

I feel the same about the stories in this issue. Kelsey’s endurance during this Appalachian Trail journey is so inspiring! I’m also very excited to highlight some alumnae initiates whose mothers are Guard of Honor wearers! These things make me so proud to be a Theta Phi Alpha.

MESSAGE FROM

our PRESIDENT

Fall is in the air! This brings back memories of my days as a collegian in the Alpha Pi Chapter at Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. Fall meant beginning a new school year, seeing friends I had been missing over the summer, and recruitment. Fall meant welcoming new members, Homecoming, and Greek Olympics. I can see the faces and remember the fun. I smile remembering the feeling of seeing my precious Theta Phi Alphas every day – something you don’t realize you will miss until you don’t see them every day. If you are an alumna, are you remembering? Are you seeing the faces? Are you smiling from the feelings? Collegians, I envy you!

The Grand Council has established strategic priorities to ensure our current and future members have a memorable Theta Phi Alpha experience. My August National President’s Blog provides an update on our progress toward these priorities. I invite you to visit the President's Blog page and read my latest blog posts.

Theta Phi Alpha needs every member – collegian and alumna – to do their part to ensure that our current and future collegians will have the opportunity to have fond memories of their college days. This is a challenging time for our organization. College enrollment is declining. Our collegiate membership has declined 17% since 2018. Extension opportunities are minimal and the value and relevancy of joining a sorority is currently being challenged. We need to set Theta Phi Alpha apart from other organizations on campus and provide a meaningful experience to our members while keeping our core values of justice, friendship, and truth at the forefront.

heta Phi Alpha returned to a college campus for this year’s Officer Leadership Training.

It’s the first time that the Fraternity held a summer conference since Leadership Conference ended in 2015. Members in attendance battled the July heat and the walk around campus, wishing we were cooling off with some penguins (only terrapins in sight)!

Local alumnae and those volunteering for OLT gathered at an alumnae reception at The Hall CP before OLT began. It was a nice night for alumnae to connect with new friends and reconnect with old friends!

Collegians arrived on Thursday afternoon, and after kicking off Thursday night with a large group and the first of many small group sessions, attendees were ready to dive into very busy Friday and Saturday schedules.

Over the course of Friday and Saturday, presidents, vice presidents, new member educators, and recruitment chairs dove into positionspecific training, discussions, facilitation practices, action plans, and debriefs. The new member educators learned how to facilitate CliftonStrengths, as it will be a part of the New Member Experience this year. All groups worked on goals, roadblocks, and action plans for the upcoming year.

Large group sessions included keynotes from Bonny Shade, who challenged attendees to be better and encouraged belonging, and Colleen Blevins from Phired Up, who touched on social excellence and even more belonging. All initiated members participated in a Ritual exercise, including Rededication of Vows.

Finally, attendees regrouped with their chapter members and joined their goals and action plans together to create a shared vision for their respective chapters.

You are enough. Be intentional.

BE BETTER! These are just a few of the messages that Bonny Shade delivered to OLT attendees during her keynote. Bonny was a breath of fresh air to kick off Friday morning at OLT! Her spunky and invigorating personality was contagious, especially brightening everyone’s day in her bright orange jacket.

Bonny’s personal stories and experiences have led her to be passionate about ending campus-based sexual assault and empowering students to build better communities with senses of belonging, support, and conquering fear.

Bonny spoke about what true belonging means. Does it just mean fitting in? Not exactly. Is it easy? Probably not. In our chapters, alumnae associations, or group of Theta Phi Alphas, do we always feel like we belong? Sometimes. It’s our job to help each other feel like we belong.

It may be scary, but do it anyway! As a sisterhood, we want the feeling of belonging to be the light and let it be the good that it touches.

On her first date with her now-husband, Bonny shared her story of sexual violence. She felt supported and appreciated by what her husband said in response. She was not silent about her experiences and knew they were important to share.

She was intentional with her words and feelings. Bonny challenged our members to do the same with our chapters and new

members. What would it look like if we opened up to our new members that way? What if we supported them, helped them find belonging in our chapters, and challenged them to be better?

Bonny’s message empowered collegians to embrace the weekend of growth and learning, leverage the network they had at OLT, and challenge each other to overcome any fear.

Thank you, Bonny, for challenging us to be human, be intentional, be better.

When Bonny is not speaking to college students, she is empowering her own students as the Associate Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life at UNC Charlotte.

OLT The Penguin Shoppe brought some great new gear for our members to take home, and the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation sponsored their annual t-shirt raffle. They also started a traveling block tower, which chapters were able to sign with their chapter name and Greek letters.

Finally, Colleen shared seven indicators of a high-performing growth system:

Colleen Blevins, Phired Up’s Senior Director of Training, helped jumpstart the conversations about recruitment and Theta Phi Alpha’s partnership with Phired Up. Colleen spoke about social excellence in the fraternity and sorority world, including social excellence in marketing and recruitment. We shouldn’t look at our organization and recruitment as only events, but in terms of a business relationship.

Colleen’s message, and introduction to the partnership between Phired Up and Theta Phi Alpha, honed in on building relationships and growth during recruitment (and in the chapter). She talked about growth strategies and how growth happens in the moment in between things.

Fun nighttime activities included Theta Phi Alpha’s Foundation’s version of Family Feud, Theta Phi Feud, where four teams competed and guessed answers to questions that were previously solicited by the Foundation before OLT. Thank you to the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation for such a fun event! Attendees relaxed on Saturday evening by making friendship bracelets and enjoying some cool treats to beat the heat!

It was a hot, busy few days with great programming and a lot of great tools for our attendees to take home! Can’t wait to see everyone in Baltimore next summer!

Congrats, Dr. Mari Ann Callais!

Over the summer, Dr. Mari Ann Callais, AB, Past National President, was awarded two awards of distinction – one from Pi Beta Phi Fraternity and one from Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority.

Pi Beta Phi’s Friend of Distinction award recognizes special Fraternity partners, who are friends to Pi Phi and support the Fraternity’s initiatives.

Lisa Scott, Pi Beta Phi’s Grand President, shared, “Dr. Mari Ann Callais’ inspiring messages have made her a favorite guest speaker (and guitarist!) at many Pi Beta Phi conventions and leadership events. She is a regularly called upon sorority expert – you can see her holding court at fraternity and sorority industry conferences, hugging every person she knows and some she doesn’t, loving on those who need some extra encouragement and fulfilling her commitments as a mentor and friend. She is a champion and ambassador for Pi Beta Phi. Mari Ann, we can’t thank you enough for the inspiration and wisdom you have brought to Pi Beta Phi.” The sentiments were echoed by Alpha Epsilon Phi, as Mari Ann also received the Dana Katz Award for Interfraternalism at their National Convention in Memphis this summer, presented by Bonnie Wunsch, Executive Director, who endowed the award through the Alpha Epsilon Phi Foundation, to recognize non-AEPhis for their commitment to the interfraternal community and their impact on AEPhi. Bonnie named the award after her collegiate chapter advisor, Dana Katz, who was her mentor and responsible for Bonnie becoming an active alumna.

Not only was the award special, but Mari Ann was joined by her sister, Suzette, and her niece, Emily Hines, as Mari Ann and Emily shared their new program together, Shifting Mindsets, Connecting Generations, which addresses connection through generational differences.

Pascal joined Theta Phi Alpha in August as our new Technology Coordinator. He is responsible for the maintenance and oversight of the National Website, Membership Portal, Officer Portal, and database management.

Pascal Messavussu is a seasoned web designer/developer, webmaster, and CRM specialist who has built and managed many websites serving diverse markets including commercial printing, real estate, classical music, taxes prep, event management, and various non-profits. Over the last decade, Pascal has mastered numerous web designs, development technologies, digital marketing, agency experience developing SEO strategies, deploying email and SMS campaigns, and implementing automated consumer relation workflows.

Filled with an entrepreneurial spirit, Pascal established his own technology consulting firm in 2017, through which he continues to help many businesses and non-profits with their technology goals. Pascal is poised to advance Theta Phi Alpha’s technology efforts with related membership organization experience he gained as an undergraduate with the Student African American Brotherhood at Stony Brook University, where he holds a bachelor’s degree.

Where did the idea to hike the Appalachian Trail first cross your mind?

KFG: In my first month of traveling as a Leadership Consultant for Theta Phi Alpha, I was given a copy of A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson.

Although he did not complete his goal of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, his memoir sparked my interest in the attempt of a thru-hike. As someone who slept in a tent for the first time at 22 years old and had never been on a single backpacking trip, I cannot explain why this because a fascination or goal of mine other than, “I think it was meant to be.” I love to learn new things and to escape my comfort zone, so although taking on the new hobby of backpacking at this level of commitment probably should have scared me, it also excited me!

I know you initially started and then the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

How hard was it and what were you feeling when you had to head home and stop your journey?

KFG: Oh gosh…my original attempt to thru-hike started March 3, 2020, and I returned home on April 1, 2020. In my preparations, I had considered many things that might force me to leave the Trail including injuries, unhappiness, loneliness, or gear failures. Never had I considered having to leave the Trail due to a global pandemic! After hiking

The Appalachian Trail (AT) is the longest “hiking-only” footpath in the world.

for four weeks and 341 miles, I knew that returning home amidst COVID19 concerns was the right thing for me to do, but it was so tough to feel like I was “giving up” my dream.

Knowing that I had not failed, but I would not be successful either, was hard to process.

What was the final thing that made you say “I can do this,” so you started your planning?

KFG: I didn’t say “I can do this” until I was about 90% of the way into the hike! Before then, and during planning, my thought was, “I don’t know if I can do this, but that won’t stop me from trying.”

How long did it take you to plan?

KFG: From my initial planning to actually starting my hike, it took me four and a half years. I did not actually need that much time to plan, but in those years, the COVID-19 pandemic happened and I went to graduate school, got married, and had a major knee surgery!

What did you do to prepare?

KFG: My first preparations were all research: researching the Trail, gear needs, budgeting, and how to prepare mentally and physically. I gained a lot of knowledge from reading the

When did you know it was the right time to start again? How did you prepare?

KFG: From the day that I left the Appalachian Trail in 2020, I knew that I wanted to return. One year later, in 2021, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy was still not honoring thru-hikers due to COVID-19 concerns,

My strongest life lesson can be summed up by this quote from my favorite educator, Kurt Hahn: There is more in us than we know if we could be made to see it; perhaps, for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less." I do not think we know the limits of our abilities until we push them, and there is joy and growth to be found in the struggle. Once you have experienced what you are capable of, that knowledge and confidence remain long after the adventure ends.

It’s estimated that 99% of the entire trail has been either relocated or rebuilt since it’s completion.

delaying me another year. In 2022, I was skiing with friends in February when I broke my leg and needed a bone graft and screws to repair my knee, delaying my thru-hike for yet another year. That period of healing was very humbling and reminded me that my mobility is not promised; I needed to pursue my dream while I still can. Two surgeries and dozens of physical therapy appointments prepared me for my success in 2023!

What was it like going back out the second time?

KFG: I wanted to complete a true thru-hike, so I started back from Mile 0 in 2023, even though I hiked the first 341 miles in 2020. Retracing those steps provided a sense of comfort and confidence that I did not have in 2020. I was familiar with the climbs

and challenges in that section and was able to hike faster, completing more miles each day. When I finally did reach mile 342, it felt almost like the first day of school, knowing that I had new views and new experiences ahead of me!

morning and put your dirty, wet hiking clothing and shoes back on. Then, while donning these wet clothes, pack up your wet tent into your wet backpack! There were multiple days of continuous rain, which really pushed my ability to endure.

What was the _____________ thing about hiking the Trail?

Easiest?

KFG: The easiest thing is establishing your own routine without the duties and pressures of “real life.” Your circadian rhythm quickly syncs with nature as you go to sleep when the sun sets and wake up when the birds start chirping.

Hardest?

KFG: Although the mountains are extremely physically challenging, I think the mental challenges are much harder. For me, I struggled with the rain the most. Summer 2023 was one of the wettest summers on record in New England. For survival, you have to keep your pajamas, or “camp clothes,” dry. I cannot convey how unpleasant it is to wake up on a cold

On average, only one in four hikers who start hiking the Trail will actually finish.

Most fulfilling?

KFG: The other people on and around the Trail are the most fulfilling, without question. Each hiker has their own story, history, and motivation, but we all share similar experiences on the Trail itself. Hikers will do almost anything for another hiker in need.

Within the Trail community, there are also “trail angels,” who are individuals

or groups who show acts of kindness and generosity towards hikers. This could be a family hosting a hiker in their home for the night, a person serving snacks out of the cars at a trailhead, churches hosting full barbecues at a road crossing, or even an individual offering a hiker a hitch into town (sorry, parents!).

What was the best lesson you learned about hiking the Trail?

Scariest?

Kelsey at the top of Mount Katahdin in Maine, the end of the Trail for northbound hikers.

KFG: My scariest moment on the Appalachian Trail was my last day on the ascent to the summit of Katahdin (in Baxter State Park in Maine), the northern terminus of the trail. About two miles from the summit, the trail is in the alpine zone above tree line.

The trail also turns into steep, Class 3 rock scrambles for over a mile here, meaning it requires hand over foot “hiking” that feels more like rock climbing than hiking. While here, with no tree cover and the risk of falling high, a storm blew in on me. The rocks became damp, my hand grip and shoe traction were compromised, and I had visibility of only a dozen yards. My heart was beating so hard and my breath was rapid; I had to crouch between two boulders to take a break and catch my breath.

I saw you had some visits from family. How did this help you overall?

KFG: I had five visits between my mom, my dad, and my husband! Their

visits gave me something to look forward to when I was at my loneliest.

Their company was the best part, but they also provided other comforts.

During each visit, my family dropped me off in the morning and picked me up after 8-10 hours of hiking, then made sure I had a large, hot meal,

The AT is the largest and longest-running volunteer conservation project in the world! The entire trail is maintained by an army of volunteers that are broken up into 31 distinct maintenance clubs.

KFG: I learned how truly little we need to survive.

I traded all of my daily comfort items for a 24lb. backpack, so each item inside of it had to be very intentional. Compared to the gear of other hikers, I did splurge by carrying four pairs of underwear and four pairs of socks, which is more than the average of two each!

My strongest life lesson can be summed up by this quote from my favorite educator, Kurt Hahn: “There is more in us than we know if we could be made to see it; perhaps, for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less.” I do not think we know the limits of our abilities until we push them, and there is joy and growth to be found in the struggle. Once you have experienced what you are capable of, that knowledge and confidence remain long after the adventure ends.

How has/had Theta Phi Alpha helped you or your mindset in this whole experience?

KFG: Our sisters supported me through my journey! Many sisters encouraged me, offered me help through the trip, and checked in on me, but I actually got to meet

Katie Van Orden was the president of the Gamma Chi Chapter at Stevens Institute of Technology, who I met when I visited as a Leadership Consultant. Five years later, she met me along the Trail to share dinner!

Did traveling/packing as an LC play into this too?

KFG: Traveling as an LC equipped me with many skills to be successful in my thru-hike: adaptability, problem-solving, mindful packing, independence, and connecting with others. When I traveled as an LC, it could be intimidating to constantly be in a new place surrounded by new people. The practice of forming relationships over shared experiences with our sisters was similar to my forming friendships with other hikers.

Final thoughts?

KFG: Many of our Theta Phi Alpha sisters live in Appalachian Trail states!

With chapters in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts,

and New Hampshire, I encourage our sisters to have their own A.T. adventures. Whether it is a single day, weekend, week, or thru-hike, the Trail has something to teach us all.

Gitanjli has been at Ford since 1988, starting as a co-op student while majoring in Electrical Engineering at GMI Engineering and Management Institute (now known as Kettering University). She joined Ford after graduation in 1993 in Product Design, holding roles spanning from components to complete powertrain systems to vehicle energy management, and with increasing responsibility over time. She currently serves as the Chief Engineer of Ford's EV Energy Management Systems, where she supports the upfront design selection for electric vehicles, full hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. Gitanjli expressed that her experiences in Theta Phi Alpha were formative to both her personal and professional development. Some of her first leadership experiences were with her collegiate chapter (House Manager, Social Chair, Marshall, Assistant Pledge Mom*, and Treasurer).

Participating with sisters in social events, philanthropy, and recruitment helped develop her collaboration and networking style.

ALUMNAE INITIATES WELCOMED Legacies of GOH Wearers Initiated Karen Rubican, AS, and Diane Stallmann, AG, share a lot in common. Sisters and friends for almost thirty years, they have both been very involved alumnae, have served on the Grand Council together, and were each awarded the Guard of Honor. Recently, they both experienced the thrill of welcoming their daughters into Theta Phi Alpha in a less traditional way as alumnae initiates.

Marisa Stallmann was initiated into the Chicago Area Alumnae Association at a ceremony conducted by the Delta Nu Chapter on April 29, 2023. Meredith and Sarah Rubican, as well as Dr. Jennifer Kirk, were initiated on August 12, 2023, into the Pittsburgh Alumnae Association.

Marisa

Marisa, 29, is a graduate of Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science in marketing. With no chapter of Theta Phi Alpha on campus, she set aside plans for Greek life. After living in Boston for seven years, Marisa returned to Chicago (her mother hopes permanently). This move really provided the impetus to bring Marisa into the fold in an official way. As Diane served as a very involved alumna, Marisa grew up around the motivated, talented women of Theta Phi Alpha. Marisa’s first National Convention was Buffalo in 1996, celebrating her second birthday, and joining in on the Saturday afternoon sightseeing trip to Niagara Falls. She also made appearances in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., (2002) and Nashville, Tenn., (2010).

Sharon Stapleton Glennon, AG, says: “Marisa is someone I have known since birth and I saw her grow and develop into an amazing young woman. It appears that as I was observing her, she was observing us as her mom’s sorority sisters. She learned to value the strong bond we have shared through the highs and lows in our lives. I have not attended an Initiation in many years but felt strongly about supporting Marisa in-person. I was proud to share another life high with Marisa and her mom! I feel she understands what it means to be a sister even more than collegiate initiates as she has seen us truly live as sisters.” Marisa herself concurs, stating, “I think as an adult I am looking for more community and more meaningful relationships. I’ve seen my mom have that throughout my life with her Theta Phi sisters.” Since being initiated, Marisa has met up with a number of sisters in downtown Chicago and found that a coworker is also a Theta Phi from the Gamma Lambda Chapter!

Diane

Diane is a 1983 initiate of Alpha Gamma Chapter (DePaul University) and served the Fraternity as an active member of the Chicago Area Alumnae Association (including stints as treasurer and president), secretary, treasurer, and president of the Founders’ Foundation of Theta Phi Alpha (now the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation), National Executive Secretary, and Delta Nu Chapter Advisory Board member. She was awarded the Guard of Honor in 2004. After a lengthy career in accounting/finance for corporate and non-profit employers, Diane recently retired from her position as Controller at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Whether this retirement is permanent remains to be seen. Diane and her husband, Greg, just celebrated their 35th anniversary and also have a son, Adam.

LEGACIES | Margaret Dorothy Phalan, the daughter of Founder Dorothy Caughey Phalan, joined the Alpha Chapter in 1931, marking the first time that a legacy was initiated. Since that time, numerous legacies have been given Theta Phi Alpha membership, making this experience truly a family affair. Currently, national policy defines legacies as: a sister, half-sister, stepsister, daughter, stepdaughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, niece, aunt, or any other individual so designated by the Grand Council.

Ann Gauger, daughter of Kris Koziarz Gauger, AG, was initiated on November 5, 2022. Kris is the secretary for the Chicago Area Alumnae Association. Ann and Marisa went through the new member process together, and Ann has been participating in Chicago Area’s stocking stuffer since she was a toddler! More about Ann’s story in the next issue of The Compass!

Karen is a 1991 initiate of the Alpha Sigma Chapter (California University of Pennsylvania, now PennWest California) and has been an active volunteer since graduation in 1994. Service has included Chapter Governor, Conference Director, Conference Administrator, National First Vice President, National Vice President-Programming, National Vice President-Collegians, Board of Trustees, and National Historian. She has been president of the Pittsburgh Alumnae Association and currently serves as National Assistant Historian, Writing and Editing Team for The Compass, and vice president of the Pittsburgh and New Orleans Area Alumnae Associations. Karen received the Guard of Honor in 2008. She is the School Counselor Advisor

Meredith, 23, is a recent graduate of Chatham University with a Bachelor of Science in interior architecture. Meredith was almost two-years-old when Karen was appointed to the Grand Council in 2001 and 21 years old when she completed elected service as a member of the Board of Trustees, so her earliest and sustaining recollections of Theta Phi Alpha were those of hosting Leadership Consultants or being displaced for Grand Council meetings, Conventions, and conferences. Her first National Convention was in 2004 in Pittsburgh, when she and Sarah came to say hello at the Sunday morning closing event.

Meredith recalls many evenings tied up with phone calls, meetings, or email. Meredith came to know the sisters with whom her mom shared work responsibilities, as well as local Theta Phi Alphas who became part of the fabric of the family. Over time, Meredith came to realize and appreciate the gratification Karen found in her membership. Even the difficult work was joyous because the intent was always to advance the Fraternity. Meredith shares, “I was raised with Theta Phi Alpha as a constant presence. I was very aware of my mother’s involvement. I realize, now, that the time she spent working for the Fraternity was modeling for me what servant leadership looks like.

I am grateful for this example. I am grateful to Theta Phi Alpha for being such a wonderful gift for my mother, and now for me and my sister.”

Sarah

Sarah, 20, is a junior at Slippery Rock University, majoring in exercise science. A student in the Honors College, she will begin doctoral studies in physical therapy at Slippery Rock University next fall.

- DR. JENNIFER KIRK, ABOUT HER INITIATION EXPERIENCE

Despite being recruited by other sororities on campus, her desire was to have the experience of fraternal involvement with her biological sister. Sarah was born in 2003 while Karen was serving as National First Vice President; Grand Council minutes at that time note that Karen was afforded a maternity leave of two weeks to take care of her newborn.

Karen recalls: “Sarah was such a good sleeper, I was back at work before the two weeks was up!” Sarah embraced the experience of a volunteer’s daughter. She and Meredith accompanied their mom on trips to the National Office to assist in research and archival work and were big helpers during the Centennial history project. She has deigned to know since a very young age just what Theta Phi Alpha stands for. “If it is live, laugh, love, I’m out,” she declared.

While she did not jump at the suggestion of starting a chapter on her campus (Mom tried), she has found a healthy balance of her academic, sport, and volunteer commitments and values Theta Phi Alpha within that mix. Sarah shares: “Watching my mom be involved in and supporting such a great organization was inspiring. I am thrilled to be part of an organization that demonstrates its core values in such an important way. And, it is great fun to introduce my mom as my sister!”

THE INITIATION EXPERIENCE Karen recalls two Theta Phi Alpha experiences as being particularly significant: the writing of the Centennial History Book and initiating Kathie Hellmuth and Deborah Hellmuth Bosner, the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Helen Ryan Quinlan, at the Centennial Celebration. The initiation of her daughters, as well as a counselor colleague turned valued friend, falls into this realm. “I will never forget the look in my daughter’s eyes as they participated in our

sacred ceremony. My daughters have gifted me beyond anything that I could have imagined when they chose to become sisters in the bond. And for Jen to be part of this event as well – someone with whom I have worked so closely for years – is icing on the cake. She has long felt as close as a sister; now it is official.” The Initiation was held at Karen’s home. It was especially poignant that at least six chapters were represented by the attendees of the event, including Ainsley Robson, AT, National Vice PresidentAlumnae. Pittsburgh Alumnae Association thanks her for making the drive across Pennsylvania to take part!

Diane recounts: “As I experienced my daughter Marisa’s Initiation ritual, I was overwhelmed by memories of sisters near and far who have meant so much to me. As I write this, I’m surrounded by five other sisters on a fun weekend away. Theta Phi Alpha is a family. Congratulating my daughter and calling her sister at the end of the Initiation was indescribable. I’m so happy that Marisa will be able to deepen her experiences in the Fraternity and, I hope, be as blessed by being a Theta Phi as I have.”

The excitement about adding Marisa, Meredith, and Sarah into Theta Phi Alpha extends beyond the very proud mothers! The anticipation for the Initiations extended to those that watched these girls grow up and to those that have been the truest examples to Diane and Karen of an Ever Loyal, Ever Lasting commitment to Theta Phi Alpha.

Pittsburgh's recent alumnae initiation was a lovely and poignant affair. Witnessing these three special women, two of whom are legacies, commit themselves to Theta Phi Alpha at this point in their lives was heartwarming, as well as a reaffirmation of my own promises made over 50 years ago.

“Our sisterhood is always something to be cherished, but as someone who has two siblings who are members of the Theta Phi sisterhood, I can imagine that being part of a daughter's reception into the Fraternity is very special and will bring a deeper, lifelong connection. Whether it’s mother and daughter or sibling and sibling, those of us with a legacy sister know we are the truly lucky ones. Chicago Area also has had recent legacy alumnae initiations. Karen and Diane have been honored by their daughters’ choice to become a member. It is a personal and well-earned tribute to them both.”

When I reflect on Meredith and Sarah (Rubican) being initiated into Theta Phi Alpha, it dawns on me that these two women already knew more Fraternity history than the average new member! How could they not when their mom (and now sister) is a walking encyclopedia of our history? It seems only fitting that they are now our sisters!

Jennifer Klug gathered and organized information and led a workshop resulting in the identifcation of areas to be closer to the ideal Convention state.

Breaonna Briggs was a Chapter Manager and moved to the Region Lead role quickly. She consistently works towards everyone being on the same page and helping one another.

Caitlin Diffley serves as a Chapter Manager and gives her time, energy, and spirit to this role and all things she does.

Carmella Keim is Beta Nu’s stellar Chapter Advisor and has worked diligently with the collegians to plan and execute all the tasks set before them.

Dr. Mari Ann Callais received the Pi Beta Phi Friend of Distinction and the Alpha Epsilon Phi Dana Katz Award for Interfraternalism. Mari Ann has served as our National President and wears the Guard of Honor.

Katie Hartmann was elected as the Inaugural Chairman for the Northeast Greek Leadership Association.

Katie is the Executive Director of Theta Phi Alpha and previously served on our Grand Council.

Linda Geca Barath was elected as a City Council Member for the City of North Royalton, Ohio, and chairs and serves on multiple committees; she also acts as mayor pro tem in the absence of the actual mayor.

Liz Eberhart is chair of the Food Pantry Ministry at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church in Darien, Ill., and passionately gives freely of her time and treasure to help those in need.
