Student leaves his mark on Student Activities Council

Melvin Kong is like a lot of graduating Shockers.

“I’m very nervous about graduating: One, I have to pass all my classes; two, I need to complete all the forms to graduate, buy the cap and gown and plan what’s next,” he said.

Kong transferred to Wichita State from a Malaysian university in 2015, but he says he will not be going home.

“I’m going to work as a marketing and website intern,” Kong said.

The Wichitabased company is International Translation Service (ITS).

Kong’s major is communication and he will be creating designs KONG and hiring interpreters for ITS. “I was told it was a good communication program and it was affordable for me,” Kong said.

Still, Kong said leaving Malaysia wasn’t easy, especially for his family.

His parents will be at his graduation — their first visit to Wichita and the first time Kong has seen them in 18 months.

Kong said he will miss college life at WSU, specifically, being the vice president of membership for the Student Activities Council.

“You can grow as a leader,” Kong said. “It enhances my experience and I enjoy my [life] on campus.”

Randi Beggs, coordinator of student activities, said she wishes she could get Kong to go to grad school so he could continue working with SAC. “Melvin is a breath of fresh air,” Beggs said. “He’s always positive and finds the good in people.”

She said Kong does more than just his job.

“He’s always been a supporter and checks in to see if I am doing OK,” Beggs said.

Emily Liston, SAC family and commuter chairperson, said she will also miss Kong.

“He’s always the first to volunteer to help.”

S

tephanie Shelden is about to achieve a music department first. This May, Shelden will graduate with a double major in cello and vocal performance.

Vocal performance majors study the history, theory, and performance practice of their major. They also take one or two voice lessons a week, multiple years of language study, and perform in operas and recitals.

Shelden has done all of that and more.

“I have a really interesting perspective on signers and instrumentalists.

It’s given me more connections. I’ve gotten a lot of job opportunities because of doing both,” Shelden said.

“You get to sing and play so much more. The two help each other out.

Because you realize that this singing thing applies to this playing thing

and vice versa.”

Shelden has been playing the cello for 12 years and started singing in a Wichita Children’s Choir when she was 10 years old.

She said she fell in love with the cello after hearing a recording of Yo-Yo Ma and then falling in with opera when she started watching full length operas when she was 13 years old.

Her accomplishments include winning the Barbara Rondelli vocal competition, being the principal cellist for the Central Kansas Concert Opera, a guest principal cellist for a Friends University opera production, and starring in two operas at Wichita State.

Maria Hose, a colleague and classmate of Shelden, describes her as a great musician.

“It’s been a pleasure working with her. You always need someone who is understanding and proactive, and

that’s Stephanie.” Hose said.

That sentiment was echoed by many others who have worked with Shelden, including WSU alumna Anna Eberly.

“Stephanie is the hardest working person that I know.

Not many people can do what she’s doing, especially at the high level she’s doing it,” Eberly said.

“She’s constantly happy, constantly upbeat, cheerful and full of joy all the time. Because of that, she’s brings the moral of the music department up.”

Shelden chose WSU because she admired professors in the music department, calling them world class artists that have been both inspiring and influential.

That feeling is mutual. Pina Mozzani, a professor of music, had only positive things to say about Shelden.

“She puts the time in that you wish that every student put in to

developing her skills,” Mozzani said.

“She is not just an extraordinary student and musician but she is an extraordinary person. She’s very supportive of other students and her colleagues. Her curiosity will continue to force her to learn and to develop.”

That desire to continue to learn resulted in Shelden’s acceptance into three different graduate programs with scholarship offers.

“I’ve been accepted into the University of North Texas graduate program in music and I have an emphasis in cello performance. My plan after that is to go get a master’s in opera performance” Shelden said.

Her long-term goal is to be become an expert in interdisciplinary collaboration and work with both vocalist and instrumentalists.

For this summer, Shelden plans to work at a music camp and teach private lessons.

When my cousin Anjana and I founded Shocker Shakthi, Wichita State’s first South Asian dance team, in the fall of 2008, our only motivation was a desire to bring Indian fusion dance to the Midwest.

Compared to other universities on the east and west coasts, which frequently host Indian dance competitions and shows, WSU didn’t have much of a presence. We wanted to change that.

As we started performing around Wichita, however, another purpose came into play—bringing the world together through dance.

Sunday, Shakthi per-

formed at a 9/11 unity gathering hosted by Global Faith In Action, a local organization that promotes bringing all religions together.

The hour-long show included Jewish prayer, devotional Christian songs, Islamic expression and Hindu chanting.

Our dance team, which is made up of many different cultures, chose three songs that represent remembrance, struggle and hope—the three themes of the event.

After our performance, many people congratulated us for showing them a snippet of our culture.

What really struck us, however, were the Muslim gentleman, Catholic woman and countless others who asked if we could teach them how to

dance.

Forget what religion they were—they just wanted to dance.

Dance crosses all religions, races, cultures and boundaries.

Even though I’m Indian, I’ve done ballet since age 3, a dance that originated in France. I’ve taken zumba, hip hop, tap, jazz, African dance, belly dance, modern dance and so many others.

Dance breaks down barriers because it’s only achieved by lowering your inhibitions—and when that happens, any preconceived notions about religion and race automatically get lowered as well.

President Barack Obama held a joint session of Congress on Thursday to share his plan to fix America. His plan was very secretive until the day of the speech, when almost

every detail was given to the press.

His plan is ambitious.

Nearly $250 billion in tax cuts, more jobs for teachers, firemen and cops, massive amounts of money spent to rebuild roads and bridges, spending in a new super fast rail system, and investments in green energy.

All for the low, low price

of … $449 billion.

Oh, and this would all be paid for without adding to the deficit.

How can this be done?

That is an amazingly good MADELINE DEABLER/THE question, because SUNFLOWER it remains unanswered by the Obama administration, who say it will be answered “soon.”

The only plausible answer is that taxes will be raised

GOING TO CHINA

English education major will start teaching career overseas

fter graduating with her secondary English education degree next month, Jamillah Sleiman will prepare to add a third language to her repertoire. In addition to English and Arabic, Sleiman is learning Chinese as she gets ready to spend a year teaching English at Henan Polytechnic University in China.

Sleiman said her experience student-teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, — or ESOL — students at Wichita North High School prepared her for working with non-English-speakers.

“A lot of the students I work with already struggle with the English language,” Sleiman said.

“It’s all about learning how to adapt the curriculum, and kind of differentiating the curriculum in order to help them learn English as a second language.”

In China, Sleiman will teach English as a foreign language.

“I got really lucky to be placed at North because it’s an amazing school. The ESOL student population at that school is so big that it’s definitely helped me get into the mindset that I know what I want to do and I know the people I want to work with.”

Need

Teaching English to non-English-speakers comes with a unique set of challenges. Sleiman will focus on teaching students to carry out a conversation in English.

“The classes I’ll be teaching, they’ll be more speaking and listening-based, whereas the English classes we have here are more surrounded by literature and grammar and all of that,” Sleiman said.

Sleiman’s family’s cultural heritage has informed her research in linguistics. Her research on the Arabic language got her interested in “interact[ing] with people on the basis of language as a whole.”

Sleiman’s research in linguistics began with her fascination by the generational differences in language between the Arabic her father spoke compared to her grandmother.

It started with project in a linguistics class where students had to look into their last names.

“My research was over the changing of Arabic terminology during war and displacement in Palestine,” Sleiman said. “I told [my professor] all about my last name and how it came about and stuff and she was like, do you want to extend your research into the Arabic language that your family speaks? And I said, yeah, of course.”

“We went into this whole research for six months about me interpreting the way my grandmother speaks Arabic versus the way my father speaks Arabic, and the differences in the way they

say words,” Sleiman said.

She eventually presented her research at a linguistics conference at Boise State University last semester.

She said presenting about her cultural background was her favorite part of her college experience.

“I think my cultural heritage is something I’m so proud of and I don’t get to embrace it enough,” Sleiman said.

“So being able to show the world and show WSU like, this is where I come from and these are the changes that are happening because of the bad things that are happening in Palestine.”

She said her research focused on the “urbanization of the way the Arabic language is transforming in America,” Sleiman said.

“My grandmother was born in Palestine, married in Palestine.

They had to move to Lebanon after the war started. My father was born in Lebanon, and then they moved to Kuwait,” before moving to Wichita at age 17, Sleiman said.

“I knew I wanted to do it, so I figured, why not now?” Sleiman said.

“I didn’t want to wait until I was already in my career here in Wichita.

“I didn’t want to be deep in, like, three years into teaching here at USD 259 and decide, ‘Oh I’m going to go overseas.’

“I figured it would be good to take a year, do what I want to do, and then come back and teach in high school or middle school,” Sleiman said.

• HEALTH student association members survey students about smoking behaviors and beliefs • HEALTH student association members focus efforts on smoke-free residence hall policy

2008

WSU adopts smoke-free residence hall policy

2009-2012

Attempts at wider policy change denied; HEALTH student association members refocus efforts on campus tobacco cessation and counseling

2013

• Student Government Association (SGA) asks for Senate support for smoke-free campus; policy change stalled • PHS Capstone students conduct campus-wide survey of student, faculty and staff behaviors and beliefs related to tobacco (65 percent support tobacco-free campus policy)

2014

• HEALTH student association members submit an Executive brief outlining campus attitudes about tobacco to WSU Administration • WSU student develops the name “Tobacco Free Wu and Me” for the initiative • Committee of students, faculty and staff forms to expand tobacco-free campus efforts to include all Shockers • Community Psychology doctoral student conducts focus groups with smokers and tobacco-free campus PhotoVoice project • SGA passes resolution to support further research on becoming tobacco-free

2015

• Tobacco Free Wu & Me members complete research on smoking at sporting events • All four campus Senates pass resolutions in support of tobacco-free campus policy • President Bardo tasks Tobacco Free Wu & Me implementation team with developing plan for policy communication and cessation support

• Tobacco Free Wu & Me implementation team presents plan to President’s Executive Team • President’s Executive Team passes policy to take effect July 1, 2017.

• Tobacco Free Wu & Me launches policy awareness and cessation support campaign • July 1, 2017 WSU became a tobacco-free campus • PHS students design and launch Tobacco Free Campus Ambassador Program to evaluate policy outcomes

2018

• Tobacco Free Wu & Me members continue to raise awareness for cessation support campaign • Tobacco Free Campus Ambassadors continue to remind and educate campus about policy and cessation support campaign
