Wichita State had a chance to beat Houston and play for a shot at the American Athletic Conference tournament title and an improved seed in the national tournament.

With six seconds on the clock and trailing a single point, 75-74, the Shockers had more than enough time to put themselves in position for a game-winning shot. All Austin Reaves had to do was get the ball in-bounds to Conner Frankamp.

He didn’t get the ball to Frankamp. In fact, he didn’t even come close. Reaves’ weak inbounds pass was easily picked off

by Houston’s Galen Robinson, Jr., effectively putting an end to the Shockers’ conference tournament title hopes.

Reaves was forced to call a timeout on a loose ball after nearly committing a turnover just seconds earlier, setting up the final inbounds play.

Just more than a minute before, Reaves’ failed to handle a long pass from Landry Shamet — a turnover that lead to a go-ahead layup for Houston.

This isn’t the first time this season a late-game mishap from Reaves has cost the Shockers a game. Reaves had an inbounds pass swiped out of his hands and missed the front end of a crucial one-andone free throw as the Shockers gave up a late lead to Notre Dame in the championship of the Maui Invitational in November.

He had the opportunity later in the season against Central Florida, when he failed to pull in a loose ball in the final seconds, resulting in a Central Florida game-tying three.

The Shockers won the game in overtime, but weren’t so fortunate against Houston in the conference tournament.

Reaves has shown in flashes that he can be a volume scorer. He

averages almost two three-pointers per game, on an impressive 43 percent clip. But he’s at his best when the game isn’t on the line.

His career-high 23 points came almost entirely in the first half of a comfortable 19-point win over Tulsa. He put up 22 in a blowout win over Memphis.

The truth is, the margin for error in the final minutes of close games is razor thin. A single errant pass, missed defensive assignment, or missed free throw could really be the difference between a win and a loss.

Both of Reaves’ game-losing mistakes came in tournament play, when the pressure was heightened and it was win-or-go-home.

The Shockers could afford the loss early in the season to Notre Dame. The loss to Houston was more costly, but not devastating — the Shockers still earned a No. 4 seed in the national tournament.

The national tournament is a different beast. Every game could be the last, so mistakes are magnified.

The Shockers will find themselves in a crucial late-game situation if they plan to make a deep run. That’s just the nature of March Madness. When that time comes, the Shockers need to have five players on the court that can be trusted to handle the pressure.

If I were the coach, I know whose hands I would want to keep the ball out of.

NCAA Tournament: Shockers seeded No. 4 in East region

ichita State will play in the East region of the NCAA Tournament.

The Shockers are the No. 4 seed in the region — their highest selection since receiving a No. 1 seed in 2014.

The Shockers will play No. 13 seed Marshall on Friday in San Diego, California. The game will be broadcasted at 12:30 p.m. (CST) Friday on TNT. Marshall is in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988. WSU head coach Gregg Marshall worked as an assistant at Marshall for two years following eight seasons at the College of Charleston.

He joined Winthrop as the team’s head coach following his two seasons with the Thundering Herd.

Marshall claimed an automatic bid after winning the Conference USA tournament, upsetting Western Kentucky 67-66 in the championship game. They finished with a 24-10 record against the 184th-best strength of schedule.

Should WSU win, they’ll face the winner of No. 5 seed West Virginia/No. 12 seed Murray State.

Villanova is the No. 1 seed in the East region. Should the Shockers advance to the Sweet 16, they’d play the semifinals of the East region in Boston.

Marshall said Saturday he would like to be “positively surprised one year” after the Shockers took an early exit in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Shockers hold a 25-7 record, which is good for No. 20 in KenPom. WSU played the 74th-best strength of schedule.

The Shockers have made the NCAA Tournament for seven consecutive seasons.

They have won at least one

tournament game in each of their last five tournament appearances.

WSU has a 10-5 record over their last five NCAA Tournament trips.

In 2016, the Shockers entered the tournament as one of the last at-large teams, selected to play 11-seeded Vanderbilt in the play-in games in Dayton, Ohio.

In 2017 Marshall’s 30-win Shockers earned an automatic bid into the tournament after winning the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, but fell to a No. 10 seed.

The No. 4 seed has a .803 winning record over 13-seeds over the last four years.

Last year, all No. 4 seeds advanced to the Sweet 16.

Florida advanced to the Elite Eight last year as a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

In 1997, four-seed Arizona became the first team in the 64-team format to defeat three No. 1 seeds — Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina — en route to the national title.

Houston and Cincinnati joined WSU in representing the American Athletic Conference in the tournament. Houston drew a No. 6 seed in the West, and Cincinnati drew the No. 2 seed in the South region.

No. 1 Kansas secured top seed — their third consecutive year receiving a No. 1 seed — in the Midwest after winning the Big 12 Conference for the 14th consecutive year — an NCAA record — and toppling West Virginia in the championship of the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

No. 8 Seton Hall made a quick exit in the Big East Conference tournament losing to Butler by a point.

Kansas waltzed to the Big 12 Conference Tournament title without the help of leading rebounder and fourth-leading scorer Udoka Azubuike. Azubuike, a 7-foot center, leads the country in two-point shot percentage, where he boasts over 77 percent shooting.

The Jayhawks expect to have Azubuike back for the first round game against Penn. Devonte’ Graham, a senior, was named the Big 12’s Player of the Year after he led the Jayhawks in scoring averaging 17.3 points per game. Kansas finished the season with a 27-7 record (four home losses) and is ranked No. 7 by KenPom. com. Under Pomeroy’s metrics, the Jayhawks have the sixth-best offense and the 46th-best defense. They played the sixth-best strength of schedule in the country.

The Quakers (24-8) claimed an automatic bid into the tournament after winning the Ivy League tournament. Penn hasn’t won an NCAA Tournament game since 1994. Since 1980, the Quakers have a 1-14 record in the tournament.

Penn has four double-digit scorers. The Quakers tend to play small-ball,with tallest player in their starting rotation is 6-8 forward A.J. Brodeur, who averages 13 points and seven rebounds per game. Penn played the 271st strength of schedule, and against that competition, they combined for the 73rd-best defense and 205thbest offense under KenPom’s metrics.

Senior Angel Delgado has the Pirates in the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year. Last year, the Pirates fell to No. 8 seed Arkansas in the first round of the tournament; the year before the Pirates also made a firstround exit to No. 11 seed Gonzaga.

Delgado figured to be playing in the NBA by now, but the 6-10, 245-lb center returned the the Pirates to average a double-double for a team that finished 21-11 in the third-best conference in the country.

Seton Hall ranks the 58th-best defense and 26th-best offense in the country. They rallied two five-game winning streaks that included games against Texas Tech, Louisville, Butler, and Creighton before suffering a four-game losing streak in February. They ended February with a one-point overtime loss to Villanova at home.

Gray, who averages an AAC-best 18.6 points per game, scored 33 points as Houston sent Wichita State out in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament.

The Cougars nearly stripped Cincinnati of the conference title in the rubber match, faltering a single point.

Houston ranks outside the top-300 teams in size, but falls inside the top 10 in the NCAA for rebounding.

Gray has done the impossible, scoring 30-plus in two of the Cougars’ last five games, and five times above the mark this season.

Houston marks the No. 18 defense and No. 31 offense in the country. They went 27-7, and finished tied for second in the AAC, both in the regular-season and conference tournament.

No. 9 North Carolina State enters the NCAA Tournament a No. 9 seed after being upset in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament to Boston College.

The Wolverines caught fire in February, and haven’t slowed down. Michigan hasn’t lost a game since Feb. 6, and they enter the NCAA Tournament on a nine-game winning streak including marquee wins over Ohio State, Michigan State, and Purdue.

The Wolfpack boast the No. 24 offense and the No. 99 defense under KenPom’s metrics.

They claimed wins over Duke, Clemson, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Louisville. They were winners of five of their last six regular-season games.

Allerik Freeman, a 6-3 senior guard, leads with 15.4 points per game. Two forwards, Omer Yurtseven, 7-foot, and Torin Dorn, 6-5, each average more than six rebounds per game.

Yurtseven averages more than 51.2 percent from three-point range.

In the Big Ten Conference tournament, the Wolverines went won against Michigan State then Purdue in two days. Michigan is rated No. 10 in KenPom, with metrics to be the No. 5-best defense and 29th-best offense. Three players for the Wolverines average double-figures, and five players average more than three rebounds a game. They have the No. 55-best three-point shooting percentage of any team in the country with two players averaging above 40 percent from three-point land.

SDSU boasts the No. 36 defense in the country, and the No. 69 best offense according to KenPom metrics. Malik Pope, a 6-10 senior forward, leads the Aztecs averaging 12.9 points per game. The Aztecs spread their scoring through a rotation that is frequently eight- and nine-men deep; five players all average double digits.

Montana went on a 13-game winning streak from late December to early February. After dropping back-to-back games in February, the Grizzlies picked up the pieces ending on a six-game winning streak.

The Grizzlies dominated weaker competition, as they played the 204th-best strength of schedule, before finishing with a 26-7 record.

According to KenPom’s metrics, the Grizzlies rank inside the top 100 in offense (82) and defense (65).

A pair of 6-foot-8 senior forwards Fabijan Krslovic and Jamar Akoh lead the Grizzlies, each shooting over 57 percent from the field.

Akoh averages 13.1 points per game, but has the potential to explode for 34; junior guard Ahmaad Rorie, often breaks 20 points.

When my cousin Anjana nd I founded Shocker hakthi, Wichita State’s first South Asian dance eam, in the fall of 2008, ur only motivation was a desire to bring Indian usion dance to the Midwest.

Compared to other universities on the east and west coasts, which freuently host Indian dance ompetitions and shows, WSU didn’t have much of a presence. We wanted to hange that.

For those looking for a locally owned restaurant with excellent food, The Anchor can’t be beat.

Since 2004, the restaurant has served up an exceptional menu, a wide selection of craft beers and cocktails and a distinctive atmosphere.

At 1109 E. Douglas, it’s become a Wichita classic that everyone should experience. Perhaps, most importantly it has some of the best burgers in town.

The Anchor offers options that include a House Burger, a Heritage Lamb Burger, and Sriracha Pork Burger, among the 15 burgers on their menu. The most popular burger being the Haystack, an open-faced patty on Texas toast with French fries and queso piled on top.

It’s easy to see how burger enthusiasts rank The Anchor among their favorites when The Chop Shop, a butcher shop is next door.

Schane Gross, the owner of both The Anchor and The Chop Shop, said that the butcher shop functions

almost as an extension of a prep kitchen. They grind all their meat in-house daily and serve locally-sourced meats.

If the burgers won’t get you in the door, The Anchor also serves a variety of traditional bar fare with flair. Appetizers include Smokin’ Wings, Fried Pickles, Truffle Fries and more. The main course includes items like fish & chips, beef tacos, and mac ‘n’ cheese.

Gross’s personal favorite is the Burrata Antipasto Salad. A salad with salami, fresh burrata cheese, Castelvetrano olives, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, fresh basil, arugula, microgreens, red onions, balsamic glaze, extra-virgin olive oil and herbs.

The Anchor’s down-to-earth vibe also caters to those that are just looking for a new favorite bar. Located where Downtown meets Old Town, it’s a great place to start a Friday or Saturday night. In addition to craft cocktails, there’s a selection of 59 craft beers on tap. If beer isn’t your style, the Black Cherry Mojito and Badass Bloody Mary are recommended.

he Sunflower’s budget might be taking a hit this upcoming fiscal year, but the staff at our fair publication won’t be cutting corners in its dedication to you the reader. That includes giving a few recommendations for places to eat during March Madness this year. The following are some of our favorites: SAKURA JAPANESE CUISINE

Lobster Dynamite – $16.95 – Bowl of sushi rice served with thick cuts of lobster tail, scallions, and Sakura’s own spicy dynamite sauce.

Spicy Tuna Boat – $16.95 – Tuna boats come as rolls of sushi rice stuffed to the brim with fresh maguro, spicy mustard, and tobiko.

604 E. Douglas A true classic in the midtown Wichita area, Old Mill is a go-to for delectable continental menu items that will fill the stomach and leave you wanting more. The setting is nostalgic of a 50s style diner. The food is surprisingly cheap and the staff are incredibly friendly and prompt. Wash down your meal with a famous gargantuan chocolate shake. Blue plate specials at Old Mill will run all throughout March Madness at $9.95.

Recommendations: Chicken Sour Cream Nachos – $8.95 – Corn chips topped with grilled chicken, melted provolone, chives, and sweet salsa.

Toasted Classic B.L.T. – $7.50 – Texas toast, Bacon, lettuce, tomato, is there anything more you need to know? Cheap and delicious.

New York Chicken Salad Sandwich – $5.95 – Straight forward, but completely amazing. The simple celery, onion, cashew and chicken breast mix is delectable.

Peanut Butter, Banana and Honey Sandwich – $5.50 – Get this one toasted. It leaves the stomach whimsical and full.

206 E. Kellogg St. Breakfast, brunch, Harrison Ford sightings, and a side of biscuits and gravy from scratch; it’s all there at Doo Dah. Once referred to by announcers during a 2015 Missouri State v. Wichita State game as being a lynchpin for the success and spirit of the Shocker basketball team, Doo Dah represents something special in Shocker land. The food is simple, continental, carbo-loaded, and the maple-glazed bacon is frankly capable of giving one a coronary, but also somehow still elegant. Definitely be sure to try the cinnamon monkey bread which is served with every meal.

Recommendations: Crab Cake Benedict – $16.99 – Two fried crab cakes, covered in hollandaise sauce and served up alongside grilled asparagus and on top of a bed of hash browns.

Chicken and Waffles – $13.99 – Start here if you’ve never tried chicken and waffles. It’s truly breakfast food of the gods.

Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs – $10.99 – Fried to perfection and covered in thick white gravy, this is a Kansas staple you can’t miss.

Smothered Breakfast Burrito – $10.99 – During the sampling of Doo Dah Diner, Wichita’s own Roger Scholfied, yes, the Honda commercial guy, was chowing down on one of these gargantuan burritos. They’re cheesy, greasy and quite honestly, cathartic.

3700 E. Douglas Ave. #100 An essential constituent of College Hill’s Clifton Square, Ziggy’s might just offer the best pizza in Wichita. It’s certainly at the top tier in creativity.

Take this gem for example – a taco pizza with salsa, sour cream, and crushed Doritos on top for good measure. Ziggy’s pizza tastes as though your crazy uncle threw it together after a bender and on a low budget.

Local draughts are most definitely on tap. Ziggy’s will be hosting an outdoor beer tent stuffed with local and imported brews on tap in the Clifton Square parking lot March 15-17.

Recommendations: Meat me at Ziggy’s – $12.99 – Italian sausage, Canadian bacon, pepperoni, smoked bacon, and beef pizza with marinara sauce.

Mamacita’s Taco – $12.99 – Refried beans and taco sauce spread thin on the crust, and topped with ground beef or chicken, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and crushed Doritos. Insert applause here.

Kickin’ Chicken – $12.99 – Chicken breast with buffalo sauce, jalapeños, onion, and ranch dressing.

Sanibel Islander – $12.99 – Canadian bacon, smoked bacon, and sliced pineapple with marinara.

YOKOHAMA RAMEN JOINT

COLLEGE HILL DELI

3407 E. Douglas Ave. A stone’s throw away from Clifton Square, College Hill Deli features one of the Douglas strip’s best takes on dine-in Mediterranean. The hummus and baba ganouj are both rich and satisfying for even the hungriest bellies. For being a notably Mediterranean café, College Hill Deli offers a surprisingly good variety of tasty continental eats as well. The food is curiously inexpensive for being as frankly nóstimo as it is. The café doesn’t serve alcohol, but to soften the blow College Hill Deli does offer slices of rich, crumbly baklava for only $2.

Recommendations: Chicken Shawarma – $6.50 – Marinated in a secret spice mixed and served with tahini, lettuce, and tomatoes in a warm grilled wrap.

Baba Ganouj – $3.99 – Eggplant puree served with olive oil and pita chips. It’s like hummus, but sweeter

muscles, clams, scallops, and shrimp in a clear salt broth and costs $13.95.

Recommendations: Tonkatsu Ramen – $9.00 – Hearty and rich pork broth ramen served with chashu pork, half a soft boiled egg, black mushrooms, bamboo shoots, green onions, nori, and red ginger.

Black Garlic Tonkatsu Ramen – $11.00 – The best choice for garlic lovers. A tonkatsu and shoyu blend broth mixed with black garlic oil.

Vegan Ramen – $9.00 – Miso or shoyu broth with organic gluten free noodles, topped with bamboo shoots, green onions, corn, bean sprouts, black mushrooms, nori, and wakame.

Takoyaki – $5.50 – Baked, ballshaped octopus pastry.

PO BOY PIZZA

5619 E. Lincoln St. Owned and operated by Wichita’s May Khoury since before Clinton was in office, Po Boy is a definite favorite in terms of low-key pizzeria deliciousness. What’s kept customers coming back? In short: damn good pizza and Po Boy sandwiches that Khoury prepares herself day-in and day-out. Portions are plentiful, dishes are prepared right in front of your face, and there are old-school arcade games to play while Khoury whips up your pizza. Do yourself a favor and drive out of the way for this one.

That, and try the pizza rolls. They’re humungous, cheesy, greasy and most likely the envy of the Carney brothers.

Recommendations: Pepperoni Pizza Roll – $5.60 – A classic stuffed to the brim with pepperoni and mozzarella cheese.

Chicken Po Boy Sandwich – $5.66 – Splashed with Khoury’s secret Italian dressing and complimented with fresh lettuce, onions, and black olives for the extra bit of flavor.

Chicken Pizza Roll – $6.99 – The best combination of chicken and cheese since quesadillas.

Supreme Pizza Roll – $6.99 – Everything you love about a pizza with the works rolled up into crusty tube of satisfaction.

617 W. Douglas Ave. Adjacent from the Vagabond and a short walk away from Hatman Jack’s, Yokohama Ramen Joint opened in 2015 and has been immensely popular ever since. The always cram-packed, dine-and-dash style storefront, is intimate and frenetic.

You’ll hear loud slurps of the patrons at the next table and the clamor of boiling pots clunking together in the kitchen. Whiffs of garlic and the fishy redolence of Narutomaki will waft up into your nose. But more importantly, you’ll taste some of the most original offerings of Japanese-style ramen dishes that can be found in Wichita.

Yokohama’s also offers a refreshing selection of Boba teas: Thai, Green Tea and Taro. Seafood Shio Ramen will be a March Madness special.

This ramen dish comes served with

shallot marmalade, and thick cut bacon.

Up-N-Down Burger – $8.50 – Two thin beef patties with cheddar cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, and thousand island dressing.

Hot Hawaiian Kobe Burger – $13.00 – Juicy Kobe beef patty with pineapple-jalapeño chutney, thick cut bacon, lettuce, and Sriracha aioli on a pretzel bun.

Truffle Fries – $5.75 – Crispy fries tossed in truffle oil, parmesan cheese, and parsley.

ZIGGY’S PIZZA

605 W. Douglas Ave. Located just south of the roundabout on Sycamore and Douglas in Delano, Sakura is one of the more upscale Japanese restaurants in all of Wichita.

Entrees range from fresh cuts of sashimi and sushi to more contemporary noodle dishes.

Some are a bit pricey, but more than worth the try.

3700 E. Douglas Ave. #78 Dempsey’s has been a part of Clifton Square for the last seven years and for good reason. The pub and burger establishment focuses solely on beef-related continental cuisine.

They offer a delicious and addictive selection of gourmet French fries, including sweet potato, duck fat, and truffle fries. However, the regular fries are nothing to scoff at either. Don’t be fooled – Dempsey’s is not the average burger joint.

Recommendations: Bleu Burger – $8.75 – Bleu cheese,

725 E. Douglas Ave. Tanya’s serves exactly what their namesake implies: delectable soups, bisques, and potages. It’s a demure little nook on the drag of Douglas.

The walls are adorned with homey portraiture and little knick-knacks that, in a way, make it feel a bit like grandma’s kitchen. Tanya’s is always busy and justifiably so. Their menu is vegan-friendly and packed with original soups, salads, and sandwiches. Every sandwich comes with a gluten-free option. The bread pudding – a must try – is covered in warm caramel sauce and whipped cream. Specials for March Madness include Street Tacos and black and yellow corn salad.

Recommendations: Lu Lu Sandwich – $8.75 – Wheat toast stuffed with edamame hummus, avocado spread, spinach, red peppers and chopped almonds. It brings out the aspiring vegan in anyone.

Cleopatra Salad – $7.50 – Green salad accompanied with cucumber, tomato, grilled chicken and feta cheese with a special apricot preserve dressing to top it off.

Curry Chicken and Rice Soup – $6.00 – Curry broth topped with rice and grilled chicken breast. Nutty, sweet, and rich.

Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce – $6.00 – Crumbly bread pudding smothered in caramel sauce.

Will it induce a sugar coma? Maybe.

Try it anyway.

PHO ONG 8 – VIETNAMESE CUISINE

4857 E. Harry St. This south side Vietnamese treasure is small and run by one man who does all of the cooking. Pho Ông 8 serves up a taste of Southeast Asia that is well worth the fifteen-minute drive south of the turnpike off of Harry and Oliver. The pho is hearty, salty, minty, and packed with meat.

Choose from steak, chicken, shrimp, crab, and spicy beef. The appetizers are savory, crunchy, and cheap. Be sure to try the Vietnamese coffee.

This blend of dark roast coffee and sweetened condensed milk poured over ice is strong — real strong — which is great for keeping you fueled up and wide awake so don’t miss a minute of March Madness.

Recommendations: Pho Tái - Sirloin Beef Noodle Soup – $6.95 – Classic pho with sliced eye round steak in bone broth and garnished with scallions, onion, and cilantro.

Pho Gà - Chicken Noodle Soup – $6.95 – Slices of chicken simmered in delicious broth. A lighter alternative to traditional beef pho.

Pho Hải Sản - Seafood Noodle Soup – $7.95 – Rich with ocean flavors, this seafood soup is full of crab, shrimp, and scallops.

Com Chiên Gà - Chicken Fried Rice – $6.50 – A generous portion of flavorful rice, bursting with chicken and fresh vegetables.
