IT’S THE GAME YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR... It’s been three weeks since Northern Iowa beat the Wichita State men’s basketball team. It was the first regular season Missouri Valley Conference loss since spring 2013 when Creighton beat the Shockers 79-91. It was that day on Jan. 3 that the Panthers defeated WSU 54-70. But not in our Roundhouse. Saturday afternoon we say goodbye to two seniors: Tekele Cotton and Darius Carter. Yet, we welcome ESPN’s College GameDay to Wichita. The doubters said it couldn’t happen. Remember, though, that the doubters also said we wouldn’t make it to the Final Four. That we wouldn’t go undefeated the next season, or that we wouldn’t even make it to the NCAA tournament. But here we are. Come Saturday, we’ll know the top team in the Missouri Valley Conference. If it hasn’t been already, the men’s basketball team is on the national stage. The same goes for the university and for the Wichita community. Let’s show them who owns this Valley. University of Northern Iowa: You don’t wanna got to war.

As Saturday approaches, the Wichita State community has been abuzz with news, not only of the Shockers’ game against the University of Northern Iowa, but also with the arrival of ESPN College GameDay — what many are calling a milestone for the university and the community. However, Saturday also marks a milestone for another tradition in the WSU community: the final day of Homecoming Week. “We are looking for the win, but we are also looking for a lot of Shocker spirit,” said junior Emily Blount, vice president of Homecoming with the student organization Shockers Forever. As a part of Homecoming

Week, the Alumni Association and Shockers Forever worked to put on a series of events throughout the week. Students started voting for their nomination of Homecoming royalty on Monday, along with a series of events that students were able to attend to pump up their Shocker spirit. “We have a bunch of different events happening for Homecoming Week,” Blount said. Earlier in the week, students also started decorating office doors and students were also able to take part in Messy Twister, Tuesday evening on the second floor of the Heskett Center. On Thursday, students can vote for their Homecoming royalty from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Rhatigan Student Center.

Students can also compete in Shockers Got Talent at 7 p.m. in the Campus Acitivities Center Theater. On Friday, the bonfire and Nearly Naked Run, an annual philanthropic, mile-long walk will be held from 9 to 10 p.m., with a pancake feed held at the for runners. As the event is no cost to participants, everyone is encouraged to bring a new or gently used article of winter clothing to donate — and student participants who donate an article of clothing will receive a free T-shirt. The women’s basketball team will play at 7 p.m. at Charles Koch Arena. However, as the Shockers go face-to-face with the Northern Iowa Panthers, Blount said that there are a few things that

Although Homecoming is only a short time period, and after this weekend, the fate of the Shockers against UNI will become history — students can still do some things year-round to keep their Shocker loyalty at an all-time high. “[Students should] be involved on campus and be proud of the university that they go to,” Blount said. “Spread the Shocker love.”

Wichita State is going for its second-straight Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship. After last season failed to produce a true challenger to WSU, this season’s been a completely different conference race. Northern Iowa made a statement with the 16-point win over the Shockers on Jan. 31, and it was the first time WSU lost a conference game since March 2013. There’s more than just the title and bragging rights at stake. The MVC Player of the Year award might be on the line depending on the outcome of the game. That means this weekend’s matchup between Wichita State and Northern Iowa has more on the line than just the Valley crown. The last time the MVC regular season champion didn’t have the MVC Player of the Year on its team was the 2000-01 season when Tarise Bryson of Illinois State won player of the year and Creighton won the conference championship. The MVC Player of the Year award will probably go to a player on the team that wins. The two players everyone has talked about so far for the Larry Bird trophy have been Ron Baker and UNI’s Seth Tuttle. Let’s not leave Fred VanVleet out of the mix, though. He is the reigning MVC Player of the Year. Tuttle is definitely deserving of the award. He’s the only player on his team averaging doubledigit points and was named to a 16-member watch list for the 2015 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award last

week. VanVleet and Baker are also up for postseason awards. VanVleet is one of 17 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, given to the nation’s best point guard. Baker is on a list of 16 for the Jerry West Award, honoring the top shooting guard.

These brackets are easily subject to change depending on what happens in this weekend’s games. The main concern is who wins the Wichita StateNorthern Iowa game this Saturday. It’s the difference between receiving the one-seed in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament or the two-seed.

The one-seed and two-seed is the difference between being the MVC champs, time for rest, prep and being known as second-best. The Shockers are fighting for the conference crown. Rest and prep are important parts of receiving the top-seed. The Shockers would be able to play the earliest game on Friday and start watching film. Seeing who they will play the next day, if they win, gives them a slight advantage over their opponent.

Marshallville plans weekend campouts By Danielle Prewitt OPINION EDITOR

As the men’s basketball team prepares for the season’s most anticipated matchup, so does the band of proud fans known as “Marshallville.” The student-led organization seeks to establish traditional pregame celebrations, a feat that Wichita State has yet to clinch. “Unfortunately, tradition is not that present at this school,” group President Max Runyon said. In the effort to introduce a new tradition, Marshallville will host a campout adjacent to the Roundhouse starting at noon Thursday. There will be appearances from Channel 96.3’s DJ Tight Pants, and even a possible appearance by coach Gregg Marshall himself. Runyon and other organizers said they hoped to begin tenting Monday. “We have had a lot of interest generated from students, social

media and our Facebook page,” Runyon said. “We wanted to go out earlier on Monday, but the Athletic Department wouldn’t let us.” Assistant athletic direcor John Brewer said it was a matter of safety, but that tradition is something the department is always going to support. “As an Athletic Department, we absolutely support any tradition that student organizations are trying to do,” Brewer said. Runyon said he hopes change comes soon. “We’re never going to be able to grow as an organization if a university isn’t going to adapt,” Runyon said. “We need to let students be students.” Thursday’s and Friday’s campout activities will include a tent-building contest and a dance party hosted by Channel 96.3. “It’s awesome to be a part of such a big event,” freshman Ashlin Bohl said. Bohl said she has attended every

game this season and expects a large turnout in Marshallville. With UNI being the last game of the regular season, she said having ESPN’s College GameDay in Charles Koch Arena is just icing on the cake.
