Fewer newspapers, more digital presence Welcome to Sunflower 2.0.

I know we’ve said it before, but COLUMN BY this time we SHELBY REYNOLDS really mean it.

The Sunflower is going through some real changes — much like the university. For me, it’s an exciting time to be a part of this change. For you, readers, take advantage of what new things we have to offer.

Here’s a glance at what’s happening.

The paper used to print three days a week. But in an effort to try something new and push the digital-first mantra, we’re scaling

back to printing twice a week: Mondays and Thursdays.

If you haven’t already noticed, expect a new design.

Look for us on campus and in the commmunity. As a student-led staff, we want to become more integrated into the university, getting more boots on the ground and interacting with our audiences.

We’ll be at dorm move-in day, Welcomefest, sporting events and just walking around campus with a stack of papers.

We’re adding more special sections this year, which will print Wednesdays throughout the year. This fall, we’ll have issues on Wichita nightlife, how to land a job after college, how to shop local around the holidays and of

course the usual Basketball Guide, and more.

We’re beefing up our website and social media presence with new types of content — video, audio, photo galleries — to replace our third newspaper. The website, thesunflower.com, is getting a new look and feel soon.

We recently rolled out a mobile “application” that you can save to your smart phone’s home screen. Look for flyers and more information out soon about how to access it.

Journalism is going digital.

We’ve known this for years.

Some people like to be dramatic and say it’s “dying” (I have my qualms about that idea, but I’ll save it for another time). But for

whatever reason, The Sunflower has taken it’s time. Like, really taken it’s time.

That changes this year.

But with all these transitions, you should also expect accurate, meaningful information. As a staff, we plan to go after the stories that matter to our readership.

This means monitoring our website’s analytics to see what our audiences are reading and how they prefer to get it: desktop, mobile or tablet. Then, we optimize how we present our content based on those platforms.

So, sit back and watch us learn and grow.

Letter from university President John Bardo Hello, Shockers, Welcome returning students and those joining us for the first time. We have an action-packed semester ahead, full of accomplishments and personal fulfillment for those who make the effort.

There are many changes occurring, including new directional signage that will make it easier to find your way around campus. Two new buildings are under construction on the southeast part of campus. Within 18 months, everyone on campus and in the community — ­­­ not just engineers — will have access to fantastic facilities and equipment in the new Experiential Engineering Building, facing 17th Street.

Airbus will be moving into its new office building in early 2017, and dozens of students will get internships that don’t require leaving campus.

Starting this semester, you’ll be able to ride, walk, run and skate the Red Bud Trail, a former paved rail line that has an entrance by 17th and Oliver.

You’ll notice the WSU Strategic Plan prominently displayed in most campus buildings. These signs serve as reminders to keep working toward the vision, mission and values important to improving the university. When we succeed, your WSU degree will be worth more.

WSU aims to transform Kansas and the world through innovation, applied learning, entrepreneurship and economic impact. We are bringing researchers, faculty, students and industry together to share ideas that will drive change.

You are not just here to witness the transformation — you are meant to play a major role in it.

A recent Brookings Institution report highlighted the collaboration between WSU and the business community. It praised WSU as a place where industry and academia are engaged in a “productive, innovation-oriented partnership.”

We’re fostering an environment where seizing opportunities and risk-taking are encouraged. Big ideas can lead to new or improved businesses.

You can build a strong foundation for your future through hands-on learning in the Koch Global Trading Center, Human Performance Lab, Ennovar, NIAR’s CAD/CAM Lab, Flint Hills Media Project or the Ad Astra Communication Agency, to name a few.

Letter from Student Body President Joseph Shepard Welcome back, Shockers!

I hope that your summer break was enjoyable and you’re ready to enter this semester motivated.

You’ll find that this semester will be an interesting one. I encourage the entire student body to pay close attention to the changes going on around campus.

Also, I want to encourage you to get involved. Everything you take part in will aid you in the future and help lead you to success. Along the way of reaching your goals you’ll find that there will be some obstacles in your way. However, do not allow those roadblocks to hinder your progress.

The Student Government Association is available to all students as a tool and resource to help turn your collegiate experience into the Shocker experience. From organizational funding to holding administration accountable, we are committed to ensuring that “students come first.” Without us, this institution would not be

able to thrive and stand as tall as we do today.

Over the summer you may have seen several articles, which have appeared in local newspapers around the city. One specifically addressed the large increase in programming fees for health professions and engineering students. While I understand the importance of education and acknowledge that Wichita State has a nationally recognized engineering program, I do not believe that your education should come with a debt sentence attached to it.

While I, nor any other student government representative were involved in the decision-making process of programming fees, I can assure you my team and I are working diligently to address this issue with President John Bardo and his team.

The issue isn’t that the fee was added — in fact, there are several colleges who have programming fees.

Permit prices go up, Shocker Hall residents receive parking lot TJ RIGG

Paying to park on campus is not something that comes easy for junior Dustin Dishman.

Dishman said he is a single father, works full time and attends classes at Wichita State full time.

“I have to be able to park on campus, so it definitely sucks that I have to pay an additional $150 a year out of my pocket to park on campus,” he said.

Starting this fall, students will pay $150 for a green parking permit, up $30 from last year’s price. In addition, Shocker Hall residents now have a lot of their own, located just outside Eck Stadium in an orange lot, which also requires a $150 permit.

A negotiation The orange lot for Shocker Hall residents resulted from a discussion between Student Government Association, university administrators, the Athletic Department and other campus entities last month.

The meeting addressed some issues with parking on campus, said Anthony Vizzini, provost and senior vice president.

Vizzini described the solution — the orange lot, some expansion of green lots and the price increase — as a compromise.

“It was a solution that answered a lot of concerns that we had,” he said.

Student Body President Joseph Shepard said he brought up giving

Shocker Hall residents a lot on campus because eight university police officers were laid off over the summer. Shepard said that meant there would be less manpower available to escort students to the Hughes Metropolitan Complex, which was the case last year when Shocker Hall residents were required to park at the Metroplex.

“The security and safety measures of the students who live in Shocker Hall are then put at risk in my opinion because in the case that they have an emergency … they don’t have that access as frequently as they did in the past,” Shepard said.

Shepard added that the decision to charge Shocker Hall residents the same $150 for green permits only made sense.

“We don’t want to make it feel like they’re superior to other students who commute to and from campus,” he said.

The orange lot, however, is not strictly for Shocker Hall residents.

The lot contains about 700 spots, Vizzini said, while Shocker Hall residents total about 500. The remaining 200 spots will go to students who opt to purchase an orange permit, being guaranteed a parking spot in that lot.

Reactions Sophomore Katie Wiggins, who is Dishman’s cousin, said she cannot afford to buy a parking pass because of all of her other expenses.

Wiggins said she feels commuter students are getting the short end of the deal. She said she does not have a problem making it easier for students to attend school. However, she said she does have a problem with what she said makes parking more difficult for students who commute.

“A lot of us don’t have a lot of money,” she said. “A lot of us can’t afford to live in the dorms. And if we do, we’re going to go into such astronomical debt and send our parents into such astronomical debt that it’s not worth it. I’d rather just drive to school.”

Dishman agreed with his cousin and said the orange lot is something of a gray area for him.

“I think it’s fair for the Shocker Hall residents to have their own lot, but at the same time, for the majority of students who don’t live on campus and are commuting across the city, it definitely sucks,” he said.

Innovation Campus starts on 17th Street

Future plans for parking Vizzini said the university has some plans for parking as the campus expands and the Innovation Campus is built. He said all the buildings have plans for parking, as well.

For example, when Airbus Americas moves into its Innovation Campus building, slated to open next year, it will have a 400-space lot on campus, Vizzini said, that will likely be restricted for that building.

here’s a buzz around campus this summer, and it’s not purely figurative.

Cicada killers are back.

Despite the intimidating name, the large wasps (Sphecius speciosus), which can reach nearly two inches in length, sport bold black- and yellow-striped abdomens. The insects appear similar to gigantic yellow-jacket hornets (or dedicated Shocker fans) and are harmless to humans, according to signs posted around campus.

Unlike hornets and certain other types of bees and wasps, cicada killers are solitary wasps more interested in attracting a mate than attacking a human in defense of their nest.

Soon enough, they’ll be gone from campus.

According to information from Kansas State University’s Research and Extension Center and North Carolina State University Entomology Department, adult cicada killers emerge once a year and live 60 to 75 days from mid-July to mid-September, just long enough for the females to dig extensive tunnel

However, the problem is that these programming fees were added without communicating to the students as to why it was being added.

The university should not have put these fees up without any sort of warning. Students work jobs in the summer to be able to come up with tuition money for the fall. If an extra several hundred to a few thousand dollars is added on without warning, those

systems in which they lay their eggs and deposit paralyzed cicadas to feed their larvae, displacing up to a half-gallon of soil in the process. Cicada killers feed on plant nectar and sap.

“I’ve worked in the College of Education for 15 years, and I don’t think there’s been a single person [who has been] stung,” said Jane Eshelman, administrative specialist for Educational Support Services located in Corbin Education Center, just east of Cessna Stadium near 21st Street.

Cicada killers have made their home in the plant beds on the perimeters of buildings on campus. They are particularly concentrated around the education center and Linquist Hall, where the insects are currently going through their yearly two-month mating ritual.

“They don’t come inside, and they don’t stray far from the plant beds,” Eshelman said. “If you ignore them, they will ignore you.”

students can no longer pay their tuition on time, and it is too late for them to take out more loans.

Instead, they will be charged either a late fee or have to pay to enroll in a payment plan through the university.

While I, and other senators of the 58th session of the Senate understand increases like this are a direct result of state cuts, it is still the responsibility of the university to manage budgets effectively. We are making massive investments to other parts of campus, and in effect, certain students are being forced

to pay for the university’s unwillingness to scale back on those projects. It is time we start prioritizing what’s more important — that is keeping the cost to receive an education as reasonable as possible.

I wholeheartedly believe the best way to show that we are invested in our students is by making sure we are doing what it takes to keep them at the institution. Unfortunately, raising programming fees without any prior notice isn’t one way of doing that.

Because cicada killers are harmless and beneficial to the ecosystem, there is no need to try to exterminate them, she said.

The Physical Plant did not return a phone call before publication of this article, but as the signs posted around the plant beds of Corbin indicate, only the female cicada killers can sting, and only then to paralyze a cicada or deter a predator.

The slightly smaller male cicada killers are more aggressive than the females as they try to secure a small territory and attract a mate, yet are incapable of stinging. The

male cicada killer is, more than likely, investigating passersby, not trying to attack; he is merely curious.

Eshelman said there are always a few students who can’t overcome their fear of the large wasps.

One solution she suggests for the squeamish is giving a large berth to the planter beds and entering the building where the wasps are less concentrated.

Some students may be tempted to swat the large wasps, but that may not be the best way to deal with the friendly giants. According to the signs posted around campus, cicada killers only sting when aggressively provoked.

Swatting the insects either agitates them or kills them.

Eshelman said she considers them interesting creatures.

around and trying to find their burrows, just out of curiosity, but I think it’s best not to invade their space,” she said. “They are kind of fun to watch.”

Workers are digging a trench for the sewer line, which will be buried and completed first, followed by a water line. In some spots, once the lines cut through campus, the trenches will have to be buried nearly 50 feet below ground.

“It’s inconvenient, big time,” said graduate student Vishal Sangoi, who generally walks to class from his residence on 17th Street. “Especially after it rains.”

The intersections now temporarily kept open to traffic are no longer paved.

My point is: Learn from Meek and think before you tweet, post, text, write — whatever. Take your time and consider the situation before you put out something that you can’t get rid of by deleting.

Since social media began, there has been a steady rise in cyber-bullying and deception. The MTV show “Catfish” was spawned by the mistake of a person.

You must be careful online and educate yourself, because a seemingly harmless post can go bad in an instant. Everyone has a reputation that we want to protect and we can’t control how a person perceives us, so it’s important to put out what we would like to receive back.

Vizzini said this would cause a net zero effect, meaning it will not cost the campus anything extra.

The university could see the addition of a parking garage, he said.

“There are places you can cross,” Sangoi said. “But now you have to cross the street twice and there’s the mud and the drivers sometimes hitting the barricades. It’s not good.”

Sangoi said he expects he’ll have to add travel time to his commute to school each morning and, depending on the site of construction, adjust his route frequently.

“It seems like it’s going very slow … The work will not be done by October,” he said. “Not a chance. I would make bets on it.”

Vizzini said the ultimate factor when thinking about expanding parking on campus is cost effectiveness.

“At some point, space becomes valuable enough that we look at parking garages as an answer, both on the Innovation Campus and on the established part of the campus, because it does make sense,” he said. “It’s just a cost factor.”

Aren’t we all good sports fans because we support the teams we

love?

Aside from my coverage of sports in the last five years as a journalist, I confess I’ve never followed a team closely. I’ve never watched every game, never felt the desire to turn on ESPN or watch the games on Saturday and Sunday.

Though in the last year of being a Shocker basketball fan and a childhood’s worth of going to Kansas City Chiefs home games with my grandparents, I can certainly tell you what are and what are not good characteristics of being a fan.

I can recall the memories of going to Chiefs games with my family and using the four tickets Grandma and Grandpa had for

every home game. I probably wasn’t a “good” fan in the sense that I was more absorbed into the game than yelling myself hoarse on the opponent’s third-down play. But I had fun knowing the other thousands of fans would pick up the slack for me.

Perhaps the most important thing you should consider when thinking about your behavior at a game is that you never want to be the guy or gal that makes a mother want to turn around and say, “Watch your mouth,” “Seriously?” and, in extreme cases, “Shut the (insert creative word) up.”

Unfortunately, those Chiefs games are some of the memories that stick out in my mind. My family remembers the people they had to turn around and get on to because they had consumed too much alcohol or were just plain awful, even fighting. Don’t be that Raiders fan at the Chiefs game who can’t seem to stand the sight of anything in red.

That being said, what should you strive for?

You, the fan, want to strive to be that Raiders fan at the Chiefs game who turns around and asks how the stadium food is or laugh together when the other’s teams does something completely stupid. Be those Cowboy fans that told the Chiefs fans around them that it was cheaper to fly to Kansas City and attend the game there than it was to buy a parking permit and tickets to a Cowboy’s game.

At this season’s Shocker sporting events, make sure you hold yourself in a way that you would not be embarrassed to see reported in your university or hometown newspaper. Being a good sport and representing your Shockers in a good light will take us a long way.

Being a good sports fan means you can look back at the loss and still say you had fun watching the game, saying, “We’ll get it next time.”

Local businesses now selling products in bookstore TJ RIGG

A new food option is now available in the University Bookstore: popcorn from The Popcorner.

The Popcorner, which opened in September last year in Andover, will have some of its most popular popcorn products at the bookstore this year.

In addition to The Popcorner, Nifty Nuthouse products will also be sold by the bookstore.

The bookstore took interest in Popcorner products because organizers were trying to involve local businesses and bring them in to sell their product, said Misti Meneley, retail manager of the bookstore.

“We’ve always brought from outside, so we just kind of thought we have places here in Wichita and the surrounding

areas that do this type of business — let’s see if we can work with them to get it in,” Meneley said.

That’s when the bookstore found the Popcorner, which is owned by Kirsten Bender.

History of the Popcorner Before her senior year at Andover Central High School, Bender applied for a job at what used to be Vic’s Popcorn in Andover.

“I just loved everything about it,” she said.

She said she would come back to Vic’s every year to make popcorn after she moved to Nebraska for college. She told the owners that if they ever wanted to sell the business, to give her a call.

After getting her degree in business management, Bender worked in retail management.

She said she knew she loved running businesses, but it was not the same as Vic’s.

“This was a job I always looked back on,” she said. “[I] couldn’t wait to come into work every day.”

The owners contacted her in 2012, asking if she was still interested in buying the business from them. She was, and two years later, the store was rebranded as “The Popcorner.”

Her family is also heavily involved in the store, she said.

Her sister designed the logo, and her brother and parents help run the store with her.

“It’s been really fun,” Bender said.

In the bookstore The bookstore started selling Popcorner popcorn last month.

Five flavors from The Popcorner are available for purchase at the

front of the store at the end of the candy aisle, Meneley said.

Prices range from $1.99 to $4.99, depending on the flavor.

The bookstore sells only medium-sized bags of Popcorner popcorn, but student groups and departments on campus can come in and do larger orders, Meneley said.

“We have the support of local businesses,” she said. “We can support them in turn to get their business out, tell people where it is, what their hours are and things like that.”

Plus, Bender’s family members arev Shocker fans.

“Even though we’re all the way out here in Andover, we want people to know who we are and hopefully expand one day,” she said. “We thought Wichita State would be a great avenue for that and it’s a great school.”

Starting college brings many new changes and challenges including being independent from Mom and Dad. Students and young adults have many priorities and responsibilities, but some may not realize that their health is one of them.

Health impacts everything in a student’s life, including class attendance and ultimately, grades.

Located in 209 Ahlberg Hall, Wichita State’s Student Health Services is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.

“We’re basically a one-stop shop for all of your health needs,” said Camille Childers, director of Student Health. “We exist for the students. We are supported by the student fees and it is convenient for them.”

Services include outpatient care, physicals, regular men and women health checkups, injury and immediate care services, and follow-up appointments. Doctors and nurses can also prescribe medicine and offer lab work.

The co-pay to see a doctor is $6. All of the services provided are at a discounted rate and health

insurance is not necessary. This makes prices for the services sometimes cheaper than the usual co-pay at an off-campus physician.

Being funded through student fees allows the department to keep services at a low cost and will sometimes offer free services.

“The first time I used Student Health Services was when they were offering free flu shots in Shocker Hall,” sophomore Paulina Dominguez said. “I’ve used it a few times since then because why not? It’s convenient and cheaper, plus I don’t have to drive to my normal doctor.”

The problem, Childers said, is most students do not realize that Student Health Services are even offered.

“We are strictly a service for the students only,” she said, “so more of them should use it.”

Dominguez said more freshmen should consider these health services.

“I’m so glad they were giving free flu shots that day because now I know about them and use them for other services,” she said.

“Students should definitely consider going there because it’s obviously cheaper and saves a lot of time.”

Campus offers walk-in post office in Morrison Hall TJ RIGG

Located on the first floor in Morrison Hall is Wichita State’s own, fully functioning post office.

It is strictly a walk-in office.

The post office opened in 1986, said manger Michael Sperlazza, who has been with the post office for 18 of those 29 years. Sperlazza said the office has always been in Morrison Hall and has seen some changes over the years, such as the addition of passport services three years ago.

Sperlazza said the amount of “snail mail” being delivered is declining.

“That’s true of just about anywhere you go,” he said.

“Email is killing the post office.

Numbers are down everywhere.”

Despite that, Sperlazza said the office keeps busy and offers many services, including FedEx and UPS shipping at about a 50 percent discount.

“A lot of students don’t understand that,” he said. “For example, if you wanted to mail something overnight to D.C., an eight-ounce letter or something like that, it’d run you $19.99 at a regular post office. Here, we could do it for about $10.”

Senior Suelki “Jenny” Lee, a post office student clerk, said students, especially international

students, should become aware of what the office offers.

Lee said she understands how difficult it can be for international students to send packages back home, especially if they do not have a car to drive to an off-campus post office.

“That would be a bit of a hassle because they would have to at least find a ride,” Lee said. “But, we’re here on campus and that should make everything convenient for them. As well as other students, too.”

Sperlazza said the campus post office has a goal of saving students money.

“Our job is to try to save everybody some funds,” he said.

Tutoring services offered at Wichita State

Ask any college student and you’ll usually find that there’s always that one class that everyone loathes.

It happens to the best of us. A person who loves math is required to take a literature course or an art major begrudgingly has to take a chemistry class.

Sometimes, with the workload, social life, outside work and these classes, it can all become too much, and one course may begin to be neglected and slide. As a result, the student is close to failing. Or, it could be that the individual has no interest in the subject or simply does not know how to comprehend and complete it.

So where do you turn?

Tutoring services are offered to Wichita State students at no charge.

There are a variety of depart-

ments that allocate to specific needs of various students from different backgrounds, situations and needs.

They are Student Support Services, which caters to low-income, first generation college students; TRIO and Disability Services, which helps those in need with physical, learning or psychological disabilities; The Office of Diversity and Inclusion, which provides for minority and international students; GEEKS, that services those in the engineering and sciences; among others.

The services are subject-specific and have a wide range of classes tutored, anything from biology to English and everything in between.

Additionally, there is Supplemental Instruction, which has an appointed tutor lead large group study sessions for a specific class — such as geology — every week at a particular time and date.

Nathaniel Omoarebun, the lead tutor at Student Support Services, said his job as a tutor is something

he enjoys.

“I enjoy helping students who are struggling in a class gain that self-confidence that they can successfully go through a class,” Omoarebun said. “I enjoy helping students realize their full academic potential.”

The mission of Student Support Services is to provide academic support services that help first generation, limited income, and students with disabilities successfully persist and graduate from WSU. The qualification for receiving tutoring is based on need. However, tutoring is only offered to students who are enrolled in the support services program. These students may request tutoring services based on their needs. Similarly, their advisors may recommend tutoring for their advisees.

When people think of art museums on university campuses, they think of classical art.

But that’s not the case at Wichita State’s Ulrich Museum of Art, junior Madison Moore said.

“The first time I actually went was for a class and I ended up being surprised,” Moore said. “I was expecting extremely old paintings, but what we saw was fairly new and really interesting.”

The Ulrich — located on the south end of campus off 17th Street — hosts many modern art shows, curates them and has a faculty biennial. Events are hosted almost weekly and admission is free for students.

The museum has a fall schedule packed with free events.

The first event after classes begin is the Tallgrass Cinema Alfresco, where the film “Three Idiots,” will be screened at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at

the Duerksen Amphitheatre. The Ulrich Museum has partnered with the president’s office and the Tallgrass Film Festival to give students the opportunity to watch it for free.

The museum’s focus is mostly on modern and contemporary art, which is different than most other galleries in Wichita, museum officials said.

“It’s not a stiff, boring place as people may think since it is an institution at a university,” said Jennifer Lane, spokeswoman for the Ulrich. “It’s challenging, interesting and not always pretty.

Sometimes it’s ugly and will make you uncomfortable. It’s meant to challenge you and make you think.”

The Ulrich Museum brings traveling exhibits including the exhibition “Living Between Cultures” by Annu P. Matthew, which arrives next month.

The goal is to challenge your way of thinking, Lane said.

“We bring in internationally renowned artists and there is a lot to learn from it,” she said. “Study after study shows that taking the time to look at art makes you think more and makes better connections in your brain, which helps people to think better.”

The museum sponsors two large shows during the school year, one each semester: Masters of Fine Arts show and a faculty biennial, which is hosted every other year. It also has the 76-piece Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection, which is one of the top collections of its kind, Lane said, as rated by Public Art Review, which is published by Forecast Public Art, a nonprofit arts organization.

With the many different exhibits to see, Moore encouraged students to take the time to go the Ulrich a few times each semester.

“More students should go,” she said. “There’s such a large variety of styles there that you’re bound to find something you enjoy.”

Long live the textbook In the digital age, textbooks can be readily stored on e-reader devices; however, the physical textbook still reigns supreme

Despite the rise in technology in school systems, Wichita State students still prefer traditional textbooks instead of e-books, according to sales in the university bookstore.

Tony Calvert works in the bookstore, and said traditional textbooks greatly outnumber the sales of e-books.

“I would say probably five to one, if not 10 to one,” he said.

Calvert said money is the main reason students prefer traditional textbooks.

With e-books, students cannot buy and resell — it’s a one-time deal, Calvert said. Students have the option of selling textbooks back to the bookstore or to local bookstores and online.

Additionally, e-books are typically advertised to be the cheaper option.

“I once considered buying an e-book, but the price was only a $20 difference and I can easily make the difference back when I resell the traditional book, which

was $150,” sophomore Erik Johnson said.

Calvert said e-books still hold a financial advantage, but not a major one due to inconsistencies with publishers.

“I think the publishers are still behind in regards to picking the books,” Calvert said. “I think e-books are still too expensive, which is a problem. For students to really latch on, publishers are going to have to bring the prices down significantly to where a student can see the benefit of a one-time purchase.”

According to studies in the university library, one of the advantages of using e-books is that more students are becoming more comfortable reading information on a computer screen compared with a paper version.

Ablah Library has laptop computers and other electronic devices to read e-books from.

“I go to the library quite often to use the iMacs for my e-book,” senior Savanna Smith said. “The e-book is great for math majors because with MyMathLab we get to work at our level; this means,

for instance, if I am working well above the level of the chapter, the system will adjust and skip the chapter to something more challenging rather than doing work that is already mastered.”

In contrast to e-books, students are able to carry traditional textbooks much easier. Students won’t be tempted to get on social media and aren’t tied to a computer or tablet, Calvert said.

Additionally, students can find

specific books in the library to check out.

Calvert said making the choice is much more of a preference and there isn’t a right or wrong decision. However, he said some classes and majors make better use of the options.

For example, nursing majors typically make better use of e-books because of the digital version’s hands-on approach with medical procedures. E-books use

videos to aid nursing students in their studies, an option students will not have with the use of traditional textbooks.

Also, the same is said to be true in literature classes. Calvert said students prefer e-books because it’s cheap and can be used like a Kindle. In contrast, science students prefer the use of traditional textbooks, Calvert said.

In any case, there are a myriad of reasons to select an e-book or traditional textbook, but as of now, the choice is based on preference and financial stability.

Walking into Ablah Library, new students will see several rows of iMacs, an enumerable number of books, studying areas and more, all available to students year round. But it’s not to be taken advantage of.

“The options in the Wichita State library are plentiful and well received,” evening circulation supervisor Ruth Harries said.

Students have the option to check out an unlimited number of books, electronic media and pieces of equipment. However, there are consequences for when those items aren’t returned.

If a book isn’t returned within 48 days, it is declared lost, which means the student will be charged for a replacement cost.

At that point, if the book is returned, the cost will be dropped to $10, which is an overdue fee.

“If a student owes $25 or more

or has library fines, students are not allowed to check out library materials,” Harries said. “And if students do not pay within 90 days, the bill is transferred to their student account, which could put them on hold.”

A hold means students are essentially prohibited from using all library materials, and they will not be able to enroll into classes for the next semester until the bill is paid.

WSU Ventures is a part of the Wichita State Department of Research and Tech-Transfer, focused on applying and commercializing the intellectual properties of faculty, staff and students in ways that benefit the university community, industry and public.

WSU Ventures protects and licenses inventions and innovations through the use of intellectual property attorneys, which helps put more money back into the university and individual labs and departments in which the properties were created to help sponsor future research, in accordance with Wichita State’s intellectual property policy.

Becky Hundley, leader of tech-transfer for WSU Ventures, said she thinks a common misconception around the campus is that innovation only takes place in the engineering department. WSU Ventures is hoping to put this misconception to rest.

Available for any type of creative intellectual property, including patents, copyrights and trademarks, WSU Ventures encourages the cross-pollination of different fields of research.

That means biomedical engineers, human performance majors, creators of web apps, graphic designers, marketers, business majors, writers and anyone else who creates intellectual property can benefit.

“It takes different people from different departments who have different strengths and different skill sets,” Hundley said. “I

would like to see more collaborations, or, as Dr. Bardo calls it, ‘collisions,’ between different fields of study and people with different perspectives. It takes different views and angles to successfully bring an idea to fruition.”

Last spring, WSU Ventures awarded seven innovators with more than $100,000 in funding through the Competitive Innovation Accelerator Shock Tank competition, a spin-off of the popular venture capitol ABC television show “Shark Tank.”

WSU Ventures, pending renewal of funding from the Department of Commerce, plans to have the competition for years to come. The Competitive Innovation Accelerator is open to anyone — student, faculty, staff or outside source.

Another resource for students wondering how their interests

and specialties in their field can be commercialized is through the Association of University Technology Managers’ (AUTM) BetterWorldProject.org, which features a searchable database with examples from a wide variety of innovation disciplines from different universities.

Ventures also encourages start-ups for students with business plans, and collaborates with the Center of Entrepreneurship, co-located with Ventures inside Devlin Hall.

For students concerned about losing the ownership of their intellectual property by approaching WSU Ventures, according to section 9.10 of WSU Policies and Procedures, the ownership of student works submitted in fulfillment of academic requirements shall be with the student.

Aside from books, students can check out other media: DVDs, laptops, iPads, media production equipment, old articles and magazines. Harries said the library has gathered a collection of popular DVDs for the students’ benefit, making sure students will not have to feel the need to pay to rent films. Movies can be checked out for three days for students and seven days for faculty and staff.

Before checking out media equipment, students have to sign a form agreeing to pay the replacement cost, should anything happen to the materials. Most of the equipment checks out for two hours at a time: laptops, iPads, laptops, snowball microphones, cameras and other devices.

However, a select few of cameras can be checked out for a maximum of three days.

Another library feature is becoming more popular among students: the Interlibrary Loan, senior Caitlin Doolittle said.

“I love this feature and so do my friends,” she said. “With Interlibrary Loan, we get to check out books that the library does not have, such as comics, graphic novels and other books that are sold in stores.”

The library loan process is similar to checking out books in the library, expect the process is done online through the university’s website and students fill out request forms.

Once the form is filled out, the library orders the book from another library in the U.S. When the book arrives, an email will be sent to the student with the return date.

There are not any limits to how many books can be checked out with this feature, but students have to be careful not to trigger the alarm systems. The library will have to hand students the books from the outside of the sensors because the bar codes will trigger the alarm, which means if a students wants to read the book on a study break in the library, they will have to go through this process when they’re leaving.

Starting this fall, Wichita State students can dine on sandwiches and soups from a new fast-foodstyle restaurant, Erbert and Gerbert’s, in the Rhatigan Student Center.

Erbert and Gerbert’s is a national franchise that started in 1988 in Eau Claire, Wis. With more than 80 locations in the U.S., this chain has been named one of the 33 best college sandwich shops by Thrillest Media Group.

The new sandwich shop is projected to open the first week of the fall semester, and can be found between Chick-Fil-A and Pizza Hut. Here’s a list of easy-to-miss do’s and don’ts for life on the Wichita State campus.

Park responsibly This should be obvious, but don’t take up multiple spaces or park at such an angle that the space next to yours is unusable.

Don’t be a parking vulture If you have five minutes to sit still in a parking lot and wait for someone to leave their space so you can take it, you have time to look somewhere else.

Don’t spread out on the shuttle Obviously this doesn’t hurt anyone if the shuttle isn’t crowded, but during those busy hours, your bag doesn’t need its own seat.

Yield at crosswalks Pedestrians have the right of way at all campus crosswalks.

Stop and let them pass.

Don’t be a table hog The new and improved Rhatigan Student Center’s dining area is great, but space is still limited during busy lunch hours. If you aren’t eating, don’t sit in there. If you are

eating, try not to take up a large table all by yourself.

Pick your battles College classrooms should foster critical thinking through nuanced discussion, but some students like to engage in lengthy debates with professors during class. If this wasn’t planned as part of the lecture, it can be more distracting than productive.

Yes, they can see If you’re going to spend the entire class period on a laptop or tablet, that’s your call and I won’t judge you. However, remember that people sitting behind you can see whatever you’re looking at. While it’s occasionally amusing to see someone browse Tumblr or

shop online for guns, those things are probably better searched for in private.

Use social media responsibly Apps like Yik Yak can be fun for passing time, but be respectful when using them.

Too often, I’ve seen racist comments about international students or dudes being creepy about random female students they find attractive.

There are no assigned seats, but there are I’ve never had a WSU professor assign seats, but most students pick one and sit there for the entire semester. An easy way to make a classmate dislike you is to start sitting in their seat halfway through the semester. It’s just not cool.

But not any longer. Below are three recipes the average college student can make, and all for $20 or less.

Breakfast: Quaker organic instant oatmeal and fruit

Breakfast, as they say, is the most important meal of the day, and for a high-in-protein, low-sugar, low-calorie meal packed with tons of fiber, protein and other nutrients, go for some instant oatmeal.

All you’ll need is water, a microwave, bowl and spoon. It also, for the sweet-toothed person, has a touch of maple and brown sugar for added flavor. To amp up the entrée, grab a banana, apple, orange or other fruit for an extra punch of nutrition and energy. A bundle of bananas is generally around 59 cents, and the box of Quaker oatmeal — no more than $5.

Lunch: Dole classic romaine pre-made salad paired with Wheat Thin crackers

This is easy and fun because you get to make it all your own while still remaining a smart eater. Dole’s pre-made salads come already prepared, but feel free to add more of your own, like broccoli (usually around several dollars) and onion.

Low fat shredded cheese can be a good substitute for regular, and for dressing, add some light French or

ranch to top off your edible garden. For that crunch, add a side of tomato and basil Wheat Thins crackers, which are delicious, healthy and satisfying. All can be found at a local grocer for under $20.

Dinner: Campbell’s chunky creamy chicken and dumpling soup with a side of wheat bread and a vegetable

The last meal of the day and before bed should be light but filling. Go for a soup that’s nutritious but substantial, like the chunky creamy chicken and dumpling soup. In addition, grab a slice of wheat bread and spread with light butter or a thin layer of jelly, and don’t forget the greens.

Reach for green beans to top it off for that perfect culmination. For little prep and a lot of money saved, this is an ideal meal for a steal.

Collegiate movies for freshman year Truth be told, I had a tough time coming up with recommendable movies about college life. An ungodly portion of the genre is made up of terrible, raunchy sex and fart joke comedies, no doubt due to the success of the 1978 classic “Animal House.”

COLUMN BY While some of those movies are worthwhile, ALEX PERRY they rarely have anything meaningful to say about college life. It’s fun to pretend like college will be nothing but wild drunken escapades, but for most students, it won’t be.

However, there are a few popular and recent movies that succeed in depicting the university experience.

‘Pitch Perfect’ The musical comedy “Pitch Perfect” does a decent job of demonstrating the potential benefits of getting involved with student clubs and organizations.

After the introverted loner Beca (Anna Kendrick) joins a collegiate a cappella club (I’m not sure such a club actually exists, but I won’t stop you from creating one), she ultimately grows close to the girls she sings with.

The idea behind student organizations is to help like-minded students forge long-lasting friendships, Courtesy Photo something that is undoubtedly valuable in college. “Pitch Perfect” carries this positive theme while also being one of the few movies in the genre aimed solely at a female audience.

‘Monsters University’ “Monsters University,” on the other hand, is aimed at people who won’t have to think about college for a number of years.

However, Pixar’s main strength is its ability to relay universal truths in a way that’s accessible to kids and enjoyable to adults.

While it’s not one of Pixar’s better movies, it’s entertaining enough and conveys the freshman experience of living in dorms and getting acclimated to campus life surprisingly well.

There aren’t any classes dedicated to scaring children at Wichita State, but Mike (Billy Courtesy Photo Crystal) and Sully’s (John Goodman) experience in the movie is more true-to-life than you’d expect.

The major message from this movie is how it deals with leaving home and moving into a dorm room with a complete stranger, a common experience for college students. The two protagonists couldn’t like each other less in the beginning, but they grow to become best friends by the end.

This might happen to you with your roommate, or you might hate them with a passion. “Monsters University” tells us that it’s worth at least giving them a chance.

‘The Social Network’ Finally, “The Social Network” is more valuable as advice on how not to behave at college. As Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) starts a social media revolution from his dorm room, he ascends to the top of the world by betraying and alienating those around him.

This all comes about because Zuckerberg wants to make an impression on prestigious Harvard student organizations so they’ll let him join. His collegiate power fantasy results in him becoming the world’s youngest billionaire, but not Courtesy Photo without hurting others in the process.

Honestly the most valuable part of “The Social Network” is the opening scene, in which Zuckerberg’s girlfriend tells him to stop his blind pursuit of college prestige and just be the best person he can be.

This is sage advice: don’t think of college as a competition and don’t throw others under the bus just to impress people.
