WSU Ventures program awarded $7.1 million grant, plans to enhance innovation LEVI YAGER

The Wichita State Ventures program was awarded a $7.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) earlier this month.

WSU Ventures assists faculty, staff and students commercialize their inventions to benefit the community. The grant will be used to ultimately generate defense-related jobs and foster progress in defense-related technologies, particularly in aviation. The grant has a two-year duration, and WSU Ventures plans to invest the money in five ways.

1. Robotics manufacturing “We have that capability already, but we’re looking at expanding [robotics manufacturing] in the new experiential engineering building,” said Cindy Claycomb, director of WSU Ventures.

2. Lightning strikes on airplanes

A new lab for this technology is being created at Air Capital Flight Lines, the old Boeing Co. site.

3. Technology and commercialization feasibility group “This group will employ students who will — under the guidance of a faculty member and other staff members — help us look at the technologies that come particularly out of the university, but also some that come from the community and actually do a deep dive into those technologies to see if there’s some potential for that technology to be patented, licensed or commercialized in some way,” Claycomb said.

4. Inventory of supply chain This means identifying companies in the Kansas region that have a manufacturing supply chain and documenting where the materials and supplies they use come from.

When Brad Sweet served as the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity adviser at Wichita State, he would get off work at 5:30 p.m. and arrive at 7 p.m. to the weekly fraternity meetings to meet one-on-one with fraternity members.

“When I started doing it, I just thought, ‘Well golly, everyone ought to do this,’” Sweet said.

He advised SAE from the fall of 2013 until last spring, and was one of 18 advisers who recently received the Outstanding Chapter Adviser Award from the 2014-15 national annual competition.

Sweet received the award for outstanding service and for diligence and enthusiasm in administering his responsibilities to help the chapter become as self-sufficient as possible.

The hands-off policy Sweet administered gave SAE President Nathan Lohkamp and other members of the chapter owner! ship in final decisions.

“He had a great understanding that it’s our chapter, not his,” Lohkamp said. “It takes a very wise and understanding person to lead so many people in that way.”

When he started, Sweet said he was worried because he wasn’t sure if he could fill the responsibilities of the last SAE adviser who had been with the WSU chapter for 20 years.

Sweet went to every Monday night chapter meeting, wrote

newsletters on a regular basis to SAE alumni, helped facilitate the basement remodeling of the chapter house, gave five-minute life lesson sessions at every meeting, helped alumni donate to SAE students in a Christmas campaign, connected graduates with an alumnus in their field, and met one-on-one with approximately 50 members.

CNN unethically removes poll showing Sanders as Democratic debate winner Unless you’re living under a rock, just about everyone knows about COLUMN BY this past VICTORIA Tuesday’s HENDRICKS Democratic debate on CNN, not without its controversies.

A massive uproar erupted when CNN conducted a poll reflecting Bernie Sanders, Democratic socialist senator from Vermont, as the winner after the debate, and the poll was somehow mysteriously removed from their website almost immediately.

Big deal, some might say.

Perhaps the poll was premature and something needed fixing.

This was not the case. CNN is owned by Time Warner, which happens to be Hillary Clinton’s seventh-largest campaign donor.

Where am I going with this?

CNN pulled their own poll and made it so that Clinton was the frontrunner after the debate rather than Sanders.

This is simply false.

Every single poll conducted since and screenshots of CNN’s poll have reflected the win of Sanders at the Democratic debate. PSA: Once you post something online, it never goes away. You would fare better to remember that, CNN. CNN has attempted to save face by saying that they made a mistake and that Clinton was the real victor.

I was disappointed and disgusted with this blatant act of unethical, false journalism on the part of CNN. I know that every mainstream news outlet is biased; FOX loves its Republicans and

CNN loves their Democrats, but I expected more.

When did it become OK for our news to dupe us like this?

More importantly, why have we allowed it? I can only think of one reason.

We are afraid.

I think we are all afraid to see the truth and to admit it to ourselves, myself included. I think that we have this “ignorance is bliss” attitude. It is not.

Ignorance is death. “If we just ignore it, it’ll go away.” It does not. “If we deny it, that means it’s not real.” It is real. Science, reason, logic, fact and truth do not bend to our attitudes or beliefs about a particular issue.

Bottom line.

Scientists have indisputably said that climate change is real, even if the state of Florida bans that word and that concept (which, yes, they actually did do).

Research says that marijuana has beneficial medical properties, no matter what the law and big pharma says. The Bible does not condone guns, no matter what you read. Abortion does not cease to exist with the defunding of Planned Parenthood, even if that’s what your parents told you.

We must re-evaluate and reconsider the news we are taking in, and we need to get back to a time when we held people responsible for what they are reporting. We need to remember how vital critical thinking is to the health of our society. We have to question and do our own endless, tireless research for ourselves until we’ve left no stone unturned, until we’ve exhausted all our options.

We must always be thinking, questioning and pursuing knowledge and absolute truth.

As an alumna of WSU, I would like to direct this letter to those students who believe that the recent controversy about the use of the WSU chapel is, as a Kansas City Star writer put it, a “tempest in a teapot.”

Members of the alumni community can care about this issue and at the same time support the change of the chapel to make it a more flexible, more inclusive and better-utilized space.

If in the end and into the future the place is not normally used by one faith to the exclusion of others, the donors’ intent will have been satisfied and the university community will have achieved something good.

The concern I have is not so much with the changes made but with the response to the alumni who raised those concerns. The implication by some writers is that they are prejudiced, selfish, antiquated, ignorant or hateful.

Muslims and Christians are being killed for their faith, and Grace Chapel, a place which, when built, had lovely pews and artifacts particular to Christian use, has been changed. The changes may be constitutionally required, fitting with the donors’ intent, and beneficial for use as a chapel, mosque, synagogue and temple.

But the change is no less meaningful for some than taking rugs from a mosque or scrolls from a synagogue would be for others. And it comes at a time when some of the classes that once formed the core of a liberal arts education, such as western civilization, seem under siege or neglected. In this context, why wouldn’t some in the larger community be saddened and alarmed that they are dismissed or belittled for caring about the chapel that is no more?

Perhaps the first “interfaith” and heartening lesson we have learned from this controversy is that at least two groups cared very much about their faith. One is the Muslim students who wanted a place to pray and another is the group of alumni who expressed concern.

To neither group was the change a small thing. To both it meant something.

If we understand that and give their individual members the benefit of the doubt and assume they are acting in good faith, willing to share the space in spirit as well as in deed, then we will have a start toward fulfilling its purpose.

In light of recent controversial events on campus, it’s incumbent upon us all to take as rational and objective a view as possible with compassion and respect in mind.

However, as heartening as it is to see progressive steps taken in the direction of inclusiveness, both the chapel renovation and the subsequent Student Government event fell sadly short of that goal.

State-run institutions such as Wichita State have a responsibility to all students and employees to remember the importance of maintaining the separation between churches of all persuasions and the state, even if complete separation may or may not be possible or realistic. The only way to actually include everyone is to have zero presence of any specific religion in any events or buildings operated by the university.

The chapel’s very existence already blurs the line to a certain extent; the word “chapel” being most commonly associated with Christianity. Notice that of the other religious buildings that are near campus and serve WSU believers, none are technically associated with the university, even though one of them ostensibly shares the same city block. WSU cannot, by law, run those organizations or have much to do with them.

For that reason, attempting to make the chapel (which is definitively part of the university) more inclusive also blurs the line of separation between church and state, particularly because it only attempts to include one other major religion.

There are well over 40,000 different versions of Christianity alone, many with their own unique accouterments for prayer and ritual, not to mention Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Baha’i, Judaism, people of no faith, etc., etc. Are we going to try to include all of them?

Somehow, that doesn’t seem like a viable solution, either.

As a member of the growing category of the non-religious, I

have to admit that I did not feel at all represented by either of these events. While I do happen to feel free to use the chapel if I want a quiet moment, I don’t feel especially welcome either.

Additionally, SGA led prayer session Friday, which seemed to have had the best of intentions, was entirely lacking in representation of non-religious views whatsoever. I can’t help but wonder how many other individuals on campus noticed this and felt excluded by what was supposed to be a community-building event. Again, I appreciate the effort, but since it wouldn’t have been possible to include those of every faith tradition, I question whether it should have happened at all.

Despite much misguided belief, ours is not a Christian nation. Not really. It’s supposed to be a secular nation whose majority religion happens to be Christianity.

This majority was much in evidence by the planned performance of both a Christian and a Catholic prayer at the SGA event, though they are both part of the same belief system. The much-touted (and misunderstood) founding fathers never wanted an official national religion because they understood the danger it presented.

They may have been Christians personally, but they did not want their country to be Christian.

That’s why they took pains to write about keeping religion separate from government and made sure the idea would endure beyond themselves.

Wichita State would do better by all of us to remember this idea. Of course, everyone who believes in and practices prayer in any form certainly has the right to pray when and where they want within reason, but that does not mean they have the right to expect their state university to provide accommodations for that prayer beyond that which can be used by anyone of any faith.

Senior Brayley Bazzelle said Sweet’s “life lesson” advice about investing was beneficial. “[Beforehand] I was more concerned about right now and not the future,” Bazzelle said.

Sweet said he taught the members how to be “millionaires” by saving 10 percent of their earnings every paycheck and showed them the benefits of long-term compound interest.

The “life lessons” were a common occurrence at meetings, and Sweet said they included how to act appropriately when a police officer pulls you over, lessons on drinking and not doing multiple

shots of liquor, and he even taught them to walk between their girlfriend and the street when walking on a sidewalk.

Bazzelle and Lohkamp met with Sweet during his one-onone sessions with members, which usually lasted about 10 minutes.

Sweet stepped down as adviser but still helps facilitate conversation between the fraternity and about 600 alumni.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have more than one good sit down with Brad,” Lohkamp said.

“Most are about the fraternity, but oftentimes we get off subject and talk about personal lives. He has a genuine interest in how others around him feel and cares about our well-being.”

New documentary carries Kansas connection “The Tallgrass Film Festival was seeking a sponsor for the film itself and since the film takes place in Paraguay, they contacted Kansas Paraguay Partners,” said Ann Burger, the associate director for study abroad and exchange programs at Wichita State.

But the setting wasn’t the only aspect that connected this film to Kansas.

The Recycled Orchestra emanates from a project supported by the Kansas Paraguay Partners, a local non profit, which carried donated instruments to Sounds of the Earth, a program that started in the early 2000’s by KPP members.

Members of KPP took used musical instruments from Kansas to Paraguay for the Paraguay National Symphony in Asuncion.

A new documentary reveals the transformative power that music brought to a poor community in South America stricken by devastation.

The Oscar-nodded film “Landfill Harmonic” screened this weekend at the Tallgrass Film Festival and carried with it a Kansas connection.

“Landfill Harmonic” follows the story of the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a musical group composed of young, native Paraguayans who recycled trash into musical instruments and the groups launch into international stardom. The natives in the film live amidst a landfill in the city of Cateura, a community just outside Asunción, the capital of Paraguay.

For showcasing the film, all the Tallgrass Film Association needed was a sponsor.

not be a popularity contest. It should not be about who has the best video or photo. It needs to be about the music.

You should be enjoying yourself so much that you almost forget that you wanted to take a photo to commemorate the awesome time you are having.

Music is one of my greatest passions, so there is nothing I enjoy seeing more than a couple thousand people in the same building to see the same band. That bond alone should be enough to get you lost in the music and create new friendships with other concertgoers.

So next time you go to a show, take a photo or two and then put down the phone. Your experience will be enhanced, and you will become so immersed in the greatness that you won’t even think about having your phone out.

The problem with these compulsive phone users is that they do not realize it is considered rude to many people. Not only is it rude to the people standing around the compulsive phone user (because really, who wants to see an LED screen all night?), but it is also rude to the people you are constantly harassing with photos.

Do not get me wrong, I take a few photos and sometimes a Snapchat or two, but no one wants to see or hear the entire concert. There is a definite difference between showing people that you had a good time at the show versus bombarding them with your low quality video and sound via social media.

“For a number of years, Sounds of the Earth took used instruments and carried them down to Paraguay, and provided more than 50 instruments,” Richards said.

Over the years, he said, Sounds of the Earth has grown, and now more than 100 sites are located in Paraguay. The small city of Cateura is one of them.

“Cateura is one of the Sounds of the Earth sites that has, in essence, grown out of a program that [Kansas Paraguay Partners] has played a small role in. So there is a very direct connection,” Richards said.

Burger, a KPP member for the past three years, said the film has been aired on several television programs, including “60 Minutes.”

Her hope is that people can see the Kansas connection that exists in the film and how something amazing can come from nothing.

Since 1968, KPP has linked Kansas and Paraguay together to develop understandings, a better way of life and to collaborate on projects that enhance education, health, cultural arts and emergency preparedness.

“I want people to see how something, very little of nothing — literally just trash — can create something that provides hope for the children and for the world,” Burger said.

For Richards, the music aspect is fascinating. “[The film] is a great story of some of the things I have been involved in, in terms of the way the arts can be used for motivation and encouragement for people with limited resources.”

He said, in a lot of ways, similar stories are playing out right here in Wichita.

“We just need to find those and look at how to encourage them,” Richards said.

5. Community maker space.

“A maker space is like a gym for innovators,” said Debra Franklin, director of University Strategic Initiatives at WSU Ventures. “It gives us a platform for innovative ideas to be tried, tested, developed — and if it’s a working idea, to take it to market.”

The maker space will be located in a wing off of the experiential engineering building, which is currently being built as a part of Innovation Campus. People will be able to get a maker space membership and can learn to operate the machinery in order to make their inventions and products.

The process of beginning work in these five areas has started.

The first steps include staffing, procuring equipment and doing program metrics.

Senior Craig Brownlee said he understands the importance of the recent grant and how this will impact WSU’s future growth.

“There’s kind of a continuation of that same idea in my mind, that bringing industry into the university, it helps the university, it helps the students,” he said.

Brownlee added that the goal is to have an entity concerned about increasing WSU’s involvement in the economy. He said he sees that happening in NIAR and in Innovation Campus.

Overall, the program helps the economy and adds security to the university’s role in Kansas, Brownlee said.

The women’s cross country team finished 36th and the men’s cross country team 37th in Pre-Nationals Cross Country Invitational this weekend at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky.

Junior Ugis Jocis led the Shocker men in the 8K with a finish of 24:33.3. Jocis placed 139th in the field of 288 participants.

Senior Paul Raymond followed Jocis, finishing 166th with a time of 24:43.6. Other finishers for the Shockers included sophomore Kyle Larkin, 172nd (24:45.4);

redshirt sophomore Gage Garcia, 180th (24:47.2); redshirt junior Brady Johnson, 193rd (24:52.0); sophomore Nathan Wickoren, 217th (25:01.7); and freshman Reno Law, 240th (25:13.2).

Junior Sidney Hirsch led the Shocker women in the 6K. Hirsch’s time of 21:01.0 was enough for a 78th-place finish in the field of 311 participants.

Redshirt junior Emilea Finley finished 132nd with a race time of 21:20.2, which set a career-best 6K time.

Coach Kirk Hunter said the team is showing steady signs of improvement, and the women are finishing better each week.

Hunter said he has a lot of faith in Topham. Topham finished 214th in her first collegiate 6K, but Hunter said a minor injury kept her out of the front of the pack. “[Topham] will have a chance to do well in two weeks at the conference meet,” he said.

The Shockers will compete in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at 8 a.m. Oct. 31 in Evansville, Indiana.

With two weekend wins, WSU takes No. 1 MVC spot MEGAN LOOPER

The Shocker volleyball team came out determined this weekend from start to finish.

Although it may not have been their most competitive match-up, WSU did not lose focus Friday night against Bradley.

And the momentum continued in a thrilling five-set win over Loyola on Saturday.

With zero lead changes, the Shockers took the first set 25-13 Friday against Bradley. Senior Katie Reilly dominated offensive play with seven kills and a .875 hitting percentage. The Bradley bench talked about fixing the little things, but with half the total kills, the Braves couldn’t keep up.

Jumping with another early lead, WSU took the second set 25-16. Jody Larson led with seven kills while Jenny Whitledge had five digs. The Shockers hit .565 percent while the Braves hit .125.

Without falter, the last set resulted in another Shocker victory. The closest of the three sets, WSU finished 25-21 as Bradley fought to the finish but came up short.

The Shockers experimented with a 6-2 rotation featuring both Emily Hiebert and McKenzie Fyfe, allowing for maximum offensive potential and a more effective defense.

“We’ve had 6-2 on the brain since the spring,” head coach Chris Lamb said. It’s been a work in progress for a while, 5-1 might be right for us, but we’re going to keep building that 6-2 until it becomes right.”

Leading the match was Larson with 13 kills and seven digs.

“Both Emily and McKenzie set me really well tonight and found me on the court, and I took advantage of that,” Larson said.

As conference play advanced, the drive and focus continued as WSU faced Loyola on Saturday night in a battle for the No. 1 spot in the Missouri Valley Conference.

They came out on top after a five-set dogfight, securing the No. 1 ranking.

“It’s always fun to compete in intense games against good teams,” Fyfe said.

In what easily could be pegged as the most thrilling match of the season, the Shockers won by scores of 25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 23-25 and 16-14.

Larson led in the match once again with 15 kills, while Mikaela Raudsepp, Shimen Fayad and Reilly followed close behind. Heibert had 31 assists and Dani Mostrom

contributed 21 digs.

In the first set, the Shockers jumped out to an early lead, but the Ramblers tied it at 15. Both teams fought back and fourth for the lead until an ace from Raudsepp put the Shockers at game-point, as they were able to close out the set 25-20.

The Shockers carried this momentum into the second set, winning 25-17.

The third set brought new challenges, and after falling behind early, were defeated 25-20.

The next set was evenly scored for most of play, until the Ramblers went on a late run, and closed out 25-23, taking the match to a fifth deciding game.

“I’ve been around the game long enough to know these things are going to happen,” Lamb said.

“You’ve got to keep your head in it and do what you do, and that’s what we did.”

It was all-or-nothing in the final set, as WSU led early, were challenged

by Loyola, tied up the set, and then finished the nail-biting contest 16-14 on a kill from Fayad.

“Today Loyola challenged our defense, and I think we just went out and executed really well,” Larson said Saturday.

Grabbing first place, the Shockers take on Illinois State at 6 p.m. Friday in Normal, Illinois.

“Our coaching staff has been pushing us to the next level because they know how good we can be and how good we want to be,” Reilly said.

“The competitive aspect from practice every day has carried over to game play.”

The fall softball season drew to a close Thursday after two games of the Black and Gold World Series, leaving the Gold team in the winner’s circle with a 5-4 and 9-1 victory in game one two, respectively.

Gold team members consisted of the following: pitchers junior Jenni Brooks and sophomore Kelsey Sterneker, freshman Cassidy Kelsheimer playing catcher; redshirt senior Cacy Williams playing first baseman, volunteer assistant coach Kevin Hooper on second base, freshman Kaylee Huecker at shortstop, senior Liz Broyles on third base, sophomore McKenzie Adams at left field, junior Kelli Spring at center field and junior Macklin Hitz covering right field.

“I’m really confident in this team,” Hitz said. “We have a strong foundation with a lot of options on the field.”

And those options have worked to the team’s advantage during the fall season, getting them ready for the bigger challenges that lie ahead — spring games, Missouri Valley Conference games, pursuing a conference title and more if the team plays their cards right.

“We’ve had a great fall,” head coach Kristi Bredbenner said.

“We’ve got solid defense, great offense and the pitchers are really coming together. Overall, I’m happy with the fall; we can all walk away feeling good.”

With the confidence carrying over from fall to spring, many players, such as Hitz and Spring, said there is a lot to look forward to.

“I’m excited to help the team,” Spring said. “With me

moving to the outfield, it gives us options on the infield that make us stronger than before.”

Until the spring season starts, the team will continue to work and get better, Bredbenner said.

“I’m ready to step up and be a leader for this team,” Spring said. “I’m ready to prove a lot of people wrong. We can get to the MVC Tournament and get past the first game.”

Men’s tennis fights hard in Fayetteville JOHN SMITH

The men’s tennis team performed well in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with two doubles teams advancing to the round of 16 before getting eliminated Saturday.

While the team was unable to repeat the success of last year, where they took the doubles championship home, they still had a strong showing indicative of the year they have had so far.

The teams of Vitor Mendes and Eddie Stoica, and Miroslav Herzan and Hara Inoue, continued their strong year in

doubles competition, advancing to the round of 16.

“That was such a big win that regional in the doubles last year,” head coach Brad Louderback said. “So, to have two teams in the round of 16 in doubles this year, I felt good.

We had a pretty good showing.”

On the singles side of play, the team did not have as much success in the tournament that features players and teams from all over the Midwest.

Inoue and teammate Sergio de Vilchez both made it to the round of 32 in singles play, but that was as far as any of the Shockers made it past the initial round of 64, in singles play.

“I felt we could have shown a

little bit stronger in the singles,” Louderback said. “We had a couple of matches that I felt we should have won, but let get away from us.”

As the Shockers approach a winter break in the next few weeks, the ITA regionals will serve as a starting block for the increased conference competition in the ensuing months.

“This tournament showed us a lot as far as our competition within the conference this year and what we’re going to be facing in the spring,” Coach Louderback said. “That’s the part of our season. That’s what we really took away from this tournament and I think our guys learned a lot.”

The Academy for Effective Teaching urges all eligible students to vote for their outstanding faculty member at WSU.
