In honor of the Grammys, we are going to break down the best of the best, which album you should buy, and which albums you will most likely watch lose this year.

All artists for album of the year this year are all unique and special in their own way.

‘Girl’ by Pharrell The album that spawned the super hit “Happyâ€? came from this album last year. Pharrell has a huge rĂŠsumĂŠ with seven Grammy nominations in the past. He is no stranger to award shows. “Girlâ€? is an OK album, but his songs make for better ringtones than space on The Sunflower is published by student-employees on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer session, the paper is printed once weekly on Wednesday, with exceptions for holidays and finals.

The Sunflower (published for use by WSU students, faculty and staff) is private property and unlawful removal or use of papers is prosecutable. One copy may be taken for free. Additional copies must be purchased for $1 each. The Sunflower is also partially funded by the Student Government Association.

‘Theory of Everything’ is inoffensively enjoyable Oscar-bait Hollywood has recently taken a shine to the concept of brilliant jerks who REVIEW BY change the ALEX PERRY world in biopics, sometimes at the expense of the subjects of those films.

A good example is the Oscarnominated Alan Turing biopic, “The Imitation Game,” which allegedly fictionalizes and falsely amplifies aspects of his personality to make him more unlovable, as a way to create drama.

The most interesting thing about “The Theory of Everything,” which documents the life of world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking, is that its small diversions from historical accuracy seem designed to lessen drama and make the story more pleasant.

This might seem strange, but in an era where accuracy is often thrown out the window in the name of increasing tension, this approach is kind of nice.

The end result is an enjoyable biographical love story that’s clearly designed to appeal to Oscar voters and more or less hits the notes you would expect from that kind of thing.

Fans of Hawking’s science may be disappointed to learn that “The Theory of Everything” largely focuses on his extreme physical disabilities (due to a motor-neuron disease) and his relationship with his first wife, Jane Wilde Hawking.

accomplishments (which include large contributions to the Big Bang Theory) are more of a backdrop for his personal struggles, which admirably makes the movie a little more accessible.

The big talk about “The Theory of Everything” has mostly revolved around the performances of Eddie Redmayne as Hawking and Felicity Jones as his wife, both of whom are nominated for Oscars this year.

of the progression of Hawking’s disease is supposedly quite accurate (according to Hawking himself), and Jones brings a great deal of genuine emotional weight as their relationship gradually deteriorates.

She won’t get as much attention as her male co-star, but she deserves it.

The film is adapted from Jane Hawking’s autobiography, and apparently it is fairly true to life, with a few exceptions. Notably,

there is an implication that she began an extramarital affair (with a man she would later marry) during her relationship with Hawking, which has not been stated as fact and unfortunately just serves to heighten drama.

Otherwise, “The Theory of Everything” has reverence for its subject that some other films in the genre don’t. There are opportunities to make Hawking look narcissistic, but they are largely

sidestepped in favor of making him sympathetic.

In that sense, it’s a slightly refreshing aspect of a movie that mostly adheres to formula. That may not appeal to you, but “The Theory of Everything” is largely pleasurable and avoids some of the holes its contemporaries have fallen into recently.

This looks like generic fantasy garbage with more talent than it deserves in Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. No reason to care about this one.

Directions:

1) In a large sauce pan, add the vegetable broth, water, tomatoes, beans, jalapeño, carrot and seasonings.

2) Bring the soup to a boil.

3) Reduce heat and cover.

Cook for 20 to 40 minutes.

4) Take two to three cups of the soup and place into a blender. Add half of the diced cilantro and blend.

5) Add the blended mixture back to the main soup pot and stir.

6) Garnish the soup with a little sour cream, sriracha and the rest of the cilantro.

Strong groups drive SGA action

Wichita State’s Student Government Association has been hard at work, even though school just started. Last week marked the first SGA meeting of the school year and the second meeting of the 55th session of SGA. Three new committee chairs were appointed during last Wednesday’s meeting: sophomore Steven Haneveld was appointed chair of Campus Issues Committee, junior Brianna Kitchings was appointed chair of Organization Outreach Committee, and senior Grant Rains was appointed chair of the newly formed Programming Committee. All chairpersons had many ideas for projects to take on over the school year. The Campus Issues Committee plans to improve recycling efforts on campus. Haneveld said the main targets for that project are Ablah Library, Hubbard Hall and the wRECk Center. He said these areas are more popular with students now than during past semesters and the accessibility of recycling bins should accommodate the increase.

Haneveld also spoke about a “zombie attack” exercise that he is developing with Legislative Director Darren Beckham. The plan is to outline various emergency response situations in a way that interests and engages students.

The Organization Outreach Committee, formed last year, is defining its role on campus.

Kitchings hopes the OOC can learn more about the student organizations by visiting them and finding ways to assist them. The OOC has made it a goal to better inform student organizations about the funding process through SGA. Formed this year, the Programming Committee has already identified many projects. The first event will be a “Rock the Vote” event in September. Rains is working with his committee to host a Shocker Appreciation Concert in October. There are also plans to hold the second annual Students vs. Faculty football game.

TExTbOOkS FIND IT ON NEWS STANDS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11 I remember the first day in elementary school.

The teacher called out our names, we would walk up to the front of the class, and she would hand us FEATURE bY our glossy, new textbooks.

CHANDLER WILLIAMS Sometimes the books had that new-book smell, and I loved writing my name on the top line of the inside cover and flipping through all of the untouched pages I would soon come to discover.

The exhilaration subsides when the book doesn’t include colored pictures, the only smells are of late night coffee stains from the last owner and it comes with a hefty price tag.

For some, textbooks cost more than their tuition and come in three-ring binders with paper inserts. I think it is difficult for college students to wrap their heads around spending so much money on a book when they are paying for rent, food, utility bills and tuition at the same time.

Thankfully, there are many creative options to save money on textbooks that are credited to 21st century resources.

According to Brian McKenna, a writer for collegefinder.com, the five cheapest websites for buying college textbooks are Chegg, Flatworld Knowledge, Campus book rentals, Affordabook and Google books.

McKenna says Affordabook searches sites like eBay Inc., Amazon.com, and half.com to find

the lowest prices and save you time. Chegg plants a tree for every book it sells. McKenna reported that it has planted more than 3 million trees.

E-books are also transforming the industry. Kelli B. Grant, a writer for Smartmoney.com, said students can download textbooks onto their phone by using sites such as CourseSmart.com.

Some popular local resources are Books-To-Go (4960 E. 21st St. North), Ablah Library and the Wichita State Facebook group called “Wichita State Textbook Swap.”

Last year, I resorted to buying all of my books at the campus bookstore for the convenience. This year, I found that Books-To-Go has most textbooks required for Wichita State students and sells them 5 to 10 percent cheaper.

I also learned the reserved section of Ablah Library has some textbooks you can scan, free of charge.

Other resources WSU students reported using were Amazon Prime, (free two-day shipping if you buy a $79 annual membership fee), Craigslist.org, bigwords.com and abe.com.

wRECk Center open earlier to accommodate students

The wRECk Center has extended its operating hours to accommodate Wichita State students’ desire for more places to “hang out” due to the Rhatigan Student Center construction.

Shelly Martins, RSC director of marketing, said the center, now located on the second floor, opens two hours earlier and is now open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. The hours that food is for sale remain the same, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday.

“We’re happy to serve students’ needs out of the class—a home away from home,” Martins said.

This gives them more options, times and places to socialize and study during the RSC renovation, she said.

More seating and dining choices in the RSC will not become

of university dining services, said a hot dog stand, Wu’s Weenie Wagon, has been placed near Ablah Library, Jardine Hall and Lindquist Hall to give students the chance to eat on the run.

“We intend for it to be permanent,” he said.

Another cart with barbecue beef and pork is to be added soon at the same location, Casida said.

“We’re considering a vegetarian option,” he said. “We bought them and will utilize them as long as students utilize them.”

Casida expects the carts to stop serving once it gets too cold and start again when it gets warm enough next spring.

The cart’s hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.

The spaces known as the Fireplace Lounge and Shocker Square will not reopen next month and neither will the art gallery, the first-floor restrooms or the stairwell next to the restrooms,

Moves for muscles: isolate major muscle groups with stair workout Stairs kick butt.

In fact, the StairMaster is my favorite way to get COLUMN BY cardio at the SHELBY REYNOLDS gym. But in case you don’t have a gym membership or any fancy equipment in your basement, use a staircase.

Here are a few moves that will get your heart rate pumping while also toning all major muscle groups. Try each move for 30 seconds with 10 seconds of rest in between. Repeat it two more times or for time. For the alternating movements — jumping lunges, squats and screamers — be sure to do 30 seconds on each leg.

Legs and glutes Sprints Self-explanatory, right? Sprint up the stairs, jog down and repeat for 30 seconds. If you get bored with this, there are many ways you can add variations.

Turn and run up sideways (with one foot in front of the other), then do the other side next time through. Skip a step. Take wide steps, narrow steps, etc.

Jumping squats Start low, jump and land in a squat on the next step. Keep proper form just as with any squat, so that when landing, your knees are in line with your ankles. Dip low. For more: skip a step.

Elevated toe taps Again, pretty simple. Stand at the bottom of the staircase and tap your toes on the first step. Add a hop in between and go as fast as possible.

Jumping lunges This will really burn the legs out.

Get in a lunge position (one leg

extended back, the other in front) but place your back toes on the bottom step. Lunge down. Now add hops, while still holding the lunge position.

Again, keep the knee in-line with your ankle, so that your knee doesn’t extend past your toes.

That’s a big no-no.

On the jump, reach your hands to the ceiling. Raising your arms above the heart increases the cardio level. So, reach high.

Elevated squats If this feels uncomfortable, just do regular squats with both feet on the ground. Prop up a foot on the step and squat, which really burns out the elevated leg, because it never fully extends. Same note — keep your knees in-line with your ankles.

Screamers Stay low in that same squat position and tap your foot on the ground — quickly. Again, the key is to stay low. Screamers really burn out the quads. Pump the arms, as if jogging, to add extra cardio.

Arms Tricep dips Approach the bottom of the step, as if in a crab walk, placing the palms on the step. Using the back of the arm to support you, dip low and extend back up. Feel it? The further you extend the legs the harder this move is. Be sure to keep your elbows narrow; they shouldn’t bend outward.

Elevated push-ups Again, if this feels uncomfortable, stay on the ground. Get in a push-up position, but with your feet placed on the bottom step. You can always take push-ups to your knees instead of toes, but I say challenge yourself.

Elevating your feet on the steps causes you to work the core to keep yourself balanced up there.

Abs Mountain climbers Same here — this can be done without the step with similar results. Same position as the push-up but reversed: place hands on the step and feet solid on the ground. Now drive your knees

toward your elbows as fast and hard as you can.

The added elevation requires more balance, and balance stems from your abdominals.

Floor jacks Same notes and position as the mountain climbers on this one.

This time, jump the feet out and in, as if doing a jumping jack with your feet. Really think about your core working, and you’ll feel the

burn.

Oblique crunches in a plank Same position as the last two.

This time, slowly pull the knee out and up toward your elbow. Unlike the mountain climbers, this move brings your knees out to the side.

Really drive in the knee toward your elbow/shoulder so that your obliques (side abdominals) crunch.

If you’re doing it properly, you’ll hate this move.

Wichita State has turned into Tanira Borecky’s second home.

The Hutchinson Community College transfer, now a sophomore at WSU, played pool, ate French fries and hung with friends Wednesday night at Shocker Sports Grill and Lanes for the Homecoming Launch Watch Party.

With this year’s upcoming

Homecoming events, Shockers Forever hopes to rally more spirit among students, like that found in Borecky.

“Our hope is to get more people involved on campus, more people know about [Homecoming] and to participate,” said WSU junior Emily Blount, vice president of Homecoming with Shockers Forever.

Shockers Forever is a student organization sponsored by the WSU Alumni Association which aims to bridge the gap between the student body and Shocker

alumnus.

Part of its mission is also to enhance the student experience with a handful of on-campus events — the largest being Homecoming, which is slated for the week of Feb. 23. This year’s theme is “Shockerland,” Blount said, which is a play on the popular Candy Land board game.

Wednesday night’s launch party was a kick-off to the February Homecoming events.

Students played free billiard games, bowled and posed with

Shocker-themed props — such as pom-poms, bowties and yellow, oversized glasses — for a photo booth.

This year’s Homecoming — which is organized by the WSU Alumni Association — will feature the usual Shockers Got Talent and Nearly Naked Run, with the addition of a Twister tournament and a few other new events. Visit wichita.edu/ homecoming for more event details.

Wichita State students looking for an opportunity to take their special someone on an action-filled date while on a tight budget may have found the ticket.

The B-52s, a professional indoor soccer team local to Wichita, are offering “College Date Night,” an opportunity for college students to take a date to see a game on the cheap.

“Both [students] have to have college IDs and the date gets in for free — it is a two for one deal,” said Kyle Kelly, Wichita B-52s intern.

To promote Valentine’s Day, the B-52s are allowing students to bring their college IDs to Hartman Arena at 7 p.m.

Saturday to see the team play the Milwaukee Wave on a “two-for-one” budget.

“We definitely want to get college students involved,” Kelly said. “We are trying to get everyone to the game.”

The B-52s were founded in 2013 and are members of the Major Arena Soccer League.

The team has players from around the nation, although the roster has many entries from Wichita.

Prior to the B-52s, Wichita was home to a different indoor soccer league named the Wichita Wings, which also played at Hartman Arena.

Marie Brewer, vice president of marketing for Alpha Phi, said the proceeds from “Go Red Week” will be given to the Alpha Phi Foundation, primarily providing cardiac care for women, as well as the American Heart Association.

“We don’t ask for everyone to come to everything,” Blount said.

“But at least come to one event because we have some really cool stuff going on this year.”

Blount said she hopes this year will include more student involvement.

“I would say (student involve-

ment) is good during basketball season because I mean, our basketball team has done really well the last few years,” she said.

“So I kind of want our students to always be proud to go to Wichita State no matter how good our sports teams are.”

Borecky said she’s been spending more time at Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes this semester; she’s now in her third at Wichita State.

“It’s a nice place to kind of kick back, relax,” she said. “It has a

really nice atmosphere, too, and I’ve met some really cool people here.”

That’s something Borecky said Wichita State has that Hutchinson doesn’t: spirit.

“I don’t know how other people feel, but I’m really, really proud of our school,” she said. “Even my fiancé’s grandmother hand-knitted us Wu Shock hats to wear to the games.

“They have the big noses and everything.”
