probably heard of this week’s No. 1 song. It officially dropped in November, and the music video today has more than 205 million views. For the song, Mars partnered up with international producer Mark Ronson to make it special. They have accomplished just that, as “Uptown Funk� is spending its fifth straight week at No. 5 on the charts.
Mars’ latest song, with its catchy lyrics and melodies, has already inspired a lip-dub at North Texas high school last month that went viral and reportedly moved Mars to tears. There is no official date for the anticipated album Mars is expected to drop in 2015, but all signs point to it being an instant hit. See FUNK on page 6

‘Jupiter Ascending’ a giant, lovable mess

‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ SEE IT It doesn’t look great by any means, but it’s basically what would happen if Hogwarts trained kids to be James Bond instead of wizards. Looks like decent fun.
“Jupiter Ascending” sums itself up nicely in an early scene where an REVIEW BY exciting alien ALEX PERRY dogfight ravages the skies of Chicago for several minutes without any kind of U.S. military response. Basically, everything in this movie is designed to be as awesome as possible with just the bare minimum regard for things like logic and believable human interaction. At this point, we should be used to this approach with the Wachowski siblings, who wrote and directed “Jupiter Ascending.” Their best films (here’s to you, “Speed Racer”) shine the most when the characters just shut up and take part in incredibly stylish action sequences. For fans of coherent stories, “Jupiter Ascending” will be a disappointment. Mila Kunis is a poor Earth woman who finds out she’s actually the true heiress to a family of narcissistic space aristocrats who harvest the populations of developed planets to turn into high-dollar drugs. Or something. I don’t know. It’s a beautiful, wild CGI space opera mess, replete with plenty of visually wonderful space fights and some honestly impressive overacting courtesy of Eddie Redmayne (yes, from “The Theory of Everything”), who plays the main antagonist.
Frankly, “Jupiter Ascending” is a wildly stupid movie from top to bottom. However, that’s sort of what makes the whole thing work. If the Wachowskis cared about thoughtful intelligence, we wouldn’t get to see Channing Tatum play a man whose genes were spliced with a wolf, and whose main form of transportation is rollerblading through the air with rocket boots. We wouldn’t get to hear Kunis hilariously justify her feelings for Tatum by declaring her lifelong love of dogs. We also wouldn’t get stunning plot details like the fact that Kunis can command swarms of bees because, in this universe, bees have been genetically modified not to harm space royalty. If those little tidbits make “Jupiter Ascending” sound too ridiculous for your tastes, that’s completely understandable. Those of us who like having fun will just be over here enjoying ourselves. But seriously, “Jupiter Ascending” is highly recommendable only to those who don’t have a problem with suspending their disbelief for a couple of hours and bathing in nonsense. It’s difficult to call it an earnestly good movie, but it’s a million times more interesting than many of Hollywood’s more formulaic blockbusters.
‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ SKIP IT There’s an audience for this, and that’s entirely understandable. But there has been a lot of talk about how it glorifies sexual abuse and rape, and that makes it difficult to recommend.

Try a romantic couples workout Need to fit in a workout and a date on the big day Saturday? Why not COLUMN BY combine both? SHELBY REYNOLDS Exercising in a group or with a partner is a good way to stay motivated and accountable. Get your date involved, too, this Valentine’s Day. Now you don’t have to worry about drinking that extra glass of wine or eating a carb-filled plate of pasta at the restaurant. Here are a few moves you can partner up on at the gym, or at home, if you catch my drift. Use good form, and go easy on each other. At the gym, I mean. Find a workout mat and get
busy. Assisted crunches One of you lay down, the other stands. Whoever is laying down, grab onto your partner’s ankles for support while lifting the legs straight up. The one standing: catch your partner’s ankles and toss them back down to the mat. The harder the toss, the harder it is to resist gravity on the way down, which requires extra core work. Be sure to trade places. Medicine ball: abs and legs There are several moves you can do with a partner involving a medicine ball — try a 10 or 15 pound ball, or something around the house that weighs the same (small dog?).

Put a little zing in your Valentine’s Day RECIPE BY

Do the unexpected this Valentine’s Day, and go bold with a spicy treat. Sweet is neat, but savory tantalizes the
taste buds. For a heart-y spin on a savory treat, try these heart-shaped love tarts. They only use four main ingredients and take 25 minutes to prepare and cook. What you’ll need: 1 to 2 cans of crescent roll creations (one can will yield four hearts, two will yield eight) 1 to 2 tomatoes, sliced Fresh basil Gorgonzola cheese crumbles Sriracha sauce Salt Baking sheet Two different sized heart-shaped cookie cutters
Small bowl of water What you’ll do: 1) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare the baking sheet. 2) Lay out parchment paper on a cutting board and roll the crescent dough flat. Gently press the dough to expand the surface area. 3) Use the larger of the heartshaped cookie cutters and punch out four hearts. If you want to make more, use the second can of crescent dough. 4) Place half the big hearts on the baking sheet. 5) Use the smaller of the cookie-cutter hearts to punch small hearts in the remaining big hearts. 6) Put a little bit of water on the outer edge of a whole heart, and carefully place the heart-punched one on top to make a heart pocket. Plank high-fives Each of you position yourselves in a full plank position, facing
each other. Now reach toward each other, one hand at a time, to give each other a high-five. Alternate hands and say the ABC’s on each one. You’ll feel the burn in the core and shoulders once you get to “Z.” If you try these moves or not, get active with your date. Go on a hike, go bowling, try laser tag. It’s a great way to de-stress from the week, and the night can still end with a romantic dinner and you won’t feel so guilty about it. Have fun, swole mates.
9) Place the baking sheet in the middle of the oven and set a timer for nine minutes. 10) While they cook, prepare a basil chiffonade. Stack the basil leaves and roll into a cigar shape. Slice thinly. 11) After the tarts cook, sprinkle each with the gorgonzola crumbles and a bit of the basil. Bake for an additional three minutes.
12) After the tarts are done, let them cool a bit before serving. This versatile recipe will delight your Valentine’s Day guest, family or friends. Get creative with what you use in the middle of the tart. Try a bit of Dijon mustard instead of sriracha, or use a bit of whatever you have. No matter what you try, have fun with the recipe and enjoy.

Mars knows his strength: the long, passionate vocals that made him famous. Last year, it was Mars who had the spotlight at the Super Bowl, performing with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Other than that, he stayed pretty much out of the limelight. But in November, “Uptown Funk” was introduced to the world on Saturday Night Live. Mars is also expected to headline a tour this summer. Some of Mars’ previous work is questionable, and it shows in the numbers. But if his next album is anything like the single, it’s going to be a hit. One thing is for sure, though: Mars is back to add a little “funk” to our lives with his next album.

Time to debunk myths about asexuality Anytime someone’s sexual orientation is not heterosexual, there is COLUMN BY almost always TJ RIGG a host of questions directed at them. One of the most misunderstood sexualities is asexuality, which is defined on Merriam-Webster online as “devoid of sexuality.” Put simply, people who identify as asexual are not sexually attracted to either sex, or to anyone, really. In 2004, a British study of 18,000 people found that one percent of the respondents reported feeling no sexual attraction to neither men nor women. While that number may seem small, think about it like this: one percent of the entire U.S.
population equals 3.16 million people. As someone who is borderline asexual (I’m certainly aromantic, meaning I am not romantically attracted to anyone), I empathize with people who are asexual ( defined as Aces) and the stereotypes they face. So, I’m here to clear up some of the rumors and myths surrounding people who call themselves Aces.

Aces can’t be in relationships How horribly wrong. Just because an Ace is not interested in sex does not mean they don’t want to have a relationship with somebody. It’s unfortunate that society thinks relationships with significant others must include sex, but that is certainly not the case. People can have totally healthy
‘You haven’t found the right person’ That could be the case. But again, just because an Ace happens to find “the one,” that doesn’t mean they would suddenly want to have a sexual relationship with their partner. In fact, many Aces who do have a relationship have it with
Aces don’t like people Not at all. Aces may not be interested in having a sexual relationship with anyone, but that does not mean they do not like people. Even aromantic Aces like people — they just prefer not to be in any relationship with anyone. Not having a sex life does not equate to not liking others. It’s just a dislike of sex. Simple as that.
someone who is not asexual. While that could create some awkward moments when it comes to intimacy, that does not mean that their relationship isn’t a healthy one. Again, this is not whether or not Aces are capable of having healthy relationships — there is no question that they are. It’s just that they have absolutely no interest in having sex with anyone. It’s a choice No sexuality in existence is a choice. As far as I know, nobody has ever asked (at least seriously) any heterosexual person when they decided to become heterosexual. So, why is this the case with people of any other sexuality? Probably because any other sexuality is not part of the status
quo. All in all, no sexuality is a choice. Aces are no different than the rest of us, in terms of who they are as people. The only difference between Aces and people with other sexual orientations is that Aces are simply not interested in sex. There’s nothing wrong or abnormal about that. It just is. And remember, just because somebody appears to be interested in you, even if they are an Ace, that does not give them any obligation to do anything intimate with you. Some people are just born with other sexualities. It’s time we learn to accept all of them and learn to understand how it makes each of us our own person.

Dating on social media is cool — but be careful The game is to be sold, not told. Social media is changing the dating COLUMN BY landscape. RAHIM THOMPSON If you’re not with the movement, you’re in the minority and need some catching up. Obviously things have changed with social communication. The rise of apps such as Twitter, Facebook, Tinder, Instagram and Snapchat caused the inevitable fall of the traditional “Hi, my name is … Nice to meet you,” style of communication. No longer does a person have to fret potential embarrassment of on-the-spot rejection. They’re not interested? Cool. Unfollow, block, delete. On to the next attractive
person. That’s how it works. Ten percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 used online dating sites in 2014, according to pewresearch.org. Now, let’s consider the typical college student’s age on Wichita State’s campus. It is true that not everyone on campus possesses the sureness of a GQ model to fearlessly approach a male or female whom they deem attractive. It doesn’t always work that way. Besides, why risk embarrassment when it’s easier to find his or her name, add them on Facebook, and follow on Twitter on Instagram, right? Unfortunately, that’s how it works these days. A lot easier, right? Well, don’t get too excited. I have one piece of advice for anyone who’s buying
into the hype. Proceed with caution. Ever hear of the phrase “Everything that glitters isn’t gold”? Yes? No? Either way, it applies to social media. Be mindful that every pretty face you see on social media may not — believe me on this — be all it’s hyped up to be. People lie in their bios. Makeup and filters (no shade) are game changers. The guy that you may think is successful and well off could be taking pictures with borrowed clothes standing to the nice car, which is likely rented — or not his. Again, no shade, but I’ve seen it all. If you want to increase your chances of getting the person you desire — in person or through social media — there’s protocol. Back then, it took genuine time to
figure a person out. Sometimes it takes months — years — to get to know a person. Not anymore. Want to know what that alluring woman is like? Easy. I got you. Give me her Twitter, Facebook — especially her Instagram — and I’ll tell you all you need to know. It’s really that easy. Social media makes everything about a person’s personality and living habits easier, quicker, to observe unlike traditional dating to find out. Like they say: you are what you eat. Well, you are what you tweet/post. That’s the message you’re sending out to the world about yourself. Whether it’s for entertainment purposes or not, once it’s out there we have the right to hold you accountable. Watch everything before
making a move. Would you take a test without studying? Successful people don’t. If you want to be successful in the new social media-dating realm, you need to study — know what you could potentially be getting yourself into. You don’t want to get Catfished. And if you don’t know what Catchfishing is, stop what you’re doing, Google “Manti Te’o’s girlfriend,” and re-visit this column. You’ll understand. Nonetheless, I figured this would be the most sufficient way to sum up the pressing decision between liking a person’s picture or not; following or unfollowing; commenting with the elusive flirtatious heart-faced emoji; sliding into her DM’s or not. It’s not rocket science, but there’s a science to it.
