Best bar: Heroes Sports Bar & Grill

A diverse crowd, signature drinks and sports are what keep Heroes Sports Bar & Grill in Old Town alive.

With a rich history, this local dive was once a produce warehouse that had an elevator running right through it. Around 1990, developers started looking at the Old Town area as an entertainment district in the center of the metro area. The rustic, red brick buildings seemed an idyllic setting for bars and restaurants, and the building was remodeled into a bar and grill. Heroes Sports Bar and Grill opened its doors Dec. 26, 1991, and it hasn’t changed much since then.

“As much as it changes, it kind of stays the same,” Heroes general manager Eric Davisson said.

Remodeled bathrooms and a roof for the patio are a few of the minor additions to the venue.

The interior is mostly brick with about 20 flat-screen televisions strewn everywhere, and a patio sits out front by the entrance. LED light fixtures surround the entire place, while the bar sits in the middle back.

The place is anything but generic.

Davisson tells of how the crowds have changed over the years, but really stay the same.

“There’s always someone new turning 21,” he said.

it’s about the people.

“I get to meet people who are young and who are old,” Wallace said. “I’m a very social person, so getting to talk with others is always great.”

Entering his fourth year with Heroes, he said he still enjoys talking with new customers every day and building relationships with regulars. The worst part about the job, he said, is kicking people out when they’ve had too much.

What makes this bar and grill the best in Old Town is the atmosphere, the food, drink and a friendly staff — three elements, Davisson said, that make a place successful.

and a cold beer,” Davisson said.

“The staff here is friendly, and that place has a lot of character to it.”

Of course, Heroes sees its fair share of regulars. Wichita State students venture to Old Town most weekends for the nightlife, and Heroes appears on the agenda.

“I love that there isn’t a cover, and the drinks are pretty cheap,” graduate student Nathan Thompson said. “That’s what you want.”

Graduate student Mogie Curmode echoed his thoughts.

“I like that the service is always good,” Curmode said.

“The people are friendly and the drink specials are great.”

Vannover, like Wallace, said it’s all about the people.

“The thing I love about it is the people who come in,” Vannover said. “You see the different crowds and generations of people after working here for a while.”

Vannover said he would venture to Heroes with his buddies when he was in college.

Eventually, they grew older and started raising families. He now likes to see the new wave of college kids make their way through the nightlife.

“You see a certain crowd come through for a while, then as they get older, they start coming earlier and getting different drinks,” Vannover said. “As they get older, a new crowd comes in and you see the same pattern.”

Best burger: TJ’s Burger House

For the past two years, TJ’s Burger House has been named Wichita’s favorite burger and dining spot by the Wichita Eagle.

Whether it’s the popular chili cheeseburger or a simple veggie burger, TJ’s has something to offer for all tastes.

“I’ve been coming here for two years since moving to

Wichita,” Mathew Harvey said while eating with his family.

“We come here at least twice a month. It’s a great place to get a great meal and sit and talk.”

Harvey and his family shared a table full of some of TJ’s best.

Harvey had the bacon cheeseburger, which is about three sizes bigger than a traditional McDonald’s burger. He also added a side of onion rings and carrot cake. Harvey’s wife and son had the mushroom Swiss burger, plus sides of fries and peach cobbler with drinks.

TJ’s offers all Coke products with the option of a having a shake or a root beer float.

According to one of the servers, some of the popular orders are a variety of open-faced burgers, which include fried onions hickory, chili cheese and mushroom Philly Swiss.

Don’t be fooled by the name, though. TJ’s also serves wings, salads, stew and kids’ baskets, among other items. TJ’s regular store hours are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., located at 1003 W. Douglas Ave.

Whether you are a traditional student, returning student or faculty, attending a university guarantees you late-nights full of mid-term cramming and (hopefully) great memories.

Homework and grading cannot be done on will alone, however. A fuel of some sort often becomes necessary to complete all the work asked of you. Caffeine can become quite useful the night before an exam.

Mead’s Corner is a Wichita favorite in filling this need. Upon walking through the doors of the coffeehouse, a menu-board of coffees boldly asks visitors to choose from various drinks.

If you aren’t a coffee fan, do not disregard the possibility of Mead’s being your new favorite hangout. The business also carries an assortment of teas, Italian sodas and even gelato. In addition, a small menu of sandwiches and wraps is available to pick from, as well as a small breakfast menu.

Jonathan Flesher, WSU student and Campus Ministries director, said he goes to Mead’s because of the atmosphere.

“It is very community-based,” Flesher said. “There is a lively atmosphere here. It’s a place I can work during the day. I hate to say it’s not because of the drinks, but I just love the atmosphere here.”

Assistant manager and coffee enthusiast Molly Loesch echoed Flesher’s thoughts.

“We make friends with our customers,” Loesch said.

Looking around the room, she could easily identify half of the customers and their typical order.

“The whole purpose of Mead’s was to be a place where people could come and feel safe and welcome,” she added, “no matter where they were in their walk of life.”

Mead’s Corner is a Christian faith-based coffeehouse. In fact, the shop is owned by First United Methodist Church. The business and employees frequently take part in various fundraisers. All tips put in the jar at the counter, for example, are given to ICT S.O.S. and Parkhill Elementary.

So, whether you’re looking for lunch, a simple way to donate to the community or a late-night coffee, Mead’s Corner may be the place for you.

The Donut Whole is a place for people to eat, socialize and perform music. Known for a unique line of donuts and refreshments, the Donut Whole offers edible culture to Wichitans.

Live music, donuts and drinks are some of the things offered to customers at the Donut Whole.

Located at 1720 E. Douglas Ave., the Donut Whole, famous for unique donuts such as the Maple-Bacon, Homer J and Sunshine Citrus Crunch, is open 24 hours a day for donut-lovers to satisfy their sweet tooth any time of day.

On Wednesdays, The Donut Whole also offers vegan-friendly donuts for individuals to enjoy, free of animal products.

“The Donut Whole is, in my opinion, one of the coolest, most organic places in town to hangout,” customer Marline Anthony said.

“Besides eating donuts, where else can you just hang with friends and listen to music?”

Opened in 2009, The Donut Whole is

famous for the iconic rooster located on the roof of the building. Since opening, creations from the bakery and coffee shop have made headlines, such as the bakery’s Dr. Who-themed donut being featured by British news source Metro.co.uk in December.

Upon arrival, customers can elect to sit either inside or outside on the patio. The Donut Whole also offers a drive thru, which, if wanting to purchase donuts or drinks after midnight, is the only method of picking up the sweet treats.

The Donut Whole offers a selection of specialty sodas and teas, in addition to coffee.

“They have the most fantastic chocolate donuts I’ve had,” Anthony said. “I’ve also come here to work on school projects and stuff, too.”

It comes as no surprise that Wichita State students dubbed the longest-running campus tradition “Best Campus Event.”

Hippodrome celebrated its 87th year last week with performance skits from WSU students, a variety show, laughs, stunts and more.

“Planning Hippodrome takes hard work, so seeing how it all comes together is great,” Christina Nguyen said.

Since its creation in 1928, Hippodrome has developed continuously through the years.

At its start, students and campus organizations competed in a one-day stunt competition for a $10 prize.

Since then, the show has evolved into a week-long event where students participate in skit competitions and a variety show highlighting the many talents of the WSU student body.

The first few Hippodrome years included boxing matches, wrestling and acrobatic stunts.

More recent competitions included hippo call contests, casino nights, socials and even a “best legs” competition.

“I love seeing what all of the organizations put together and how they collaborate to put on a good show,” junior Jessica Torres said.

Nonetheless, Hippodrome performances remain a trademark to the university, providing unique and eclectic entertainment. Each year sees a different set of skits, faces and a different theme ranging from classic Disney rewrites to modern social media jargon.

“Greek unity,” junior Everett Marshall said. “I like watching the hard work and dedication that goes into performing.”

With multiple flavors of frozen yogurt on tap, customers can customize their ideal frozen yogurt treat at Orange Leaf.

Orange Leaf, a national chain of frozen yogurt parlors, offers customers an opportunity to satisfy their sweet tooth in a healthier manner than typical ice-cream shops.

Located at 11414 E. Central, Ste. 104, with two other Wichita locations, Orange Leaf has different options for customers to customize their frozen yogurt dessert.

To build their ideal treat, customers first choose the size of the bowl that their dessert will come in, which can be substituted for a waffle cone or cup. From there, they will choose one — or many — base flavors of frozen yogurt, which include peanut butter, chocolate toffee and lemon flavors, among others. Sugar-free and dairy-free options are also available.

After building the base bowl, cone or cup, customers can choose among a multitude of toppings to add to their dessert, including Oreo cookies and gummy worms.

At the end of the line, the cashier will weigh the dessert and charge accordingly, with the product 45 cents an ounce.

As summer comes closer, Orange Leaf locations offer a relaxed location to spend time, either by yourself or with others.

“I come here often to get frozen yogurt with my friends,” said high school student Bailey Griffith. “Now it’s warmer out, we sit at the bleachers and do our homework or read books.”

The East Central location is open noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

8 Best weekend activity: Warren Theatre

As the Sunflower’s resident film critic, it stands to reason that I COLUMN BY would be ALEX PERRY intimately familiar with the Warren Theatre chain of movie houses, which are basically the only places to see new release films in Wichita.

Since I’ve been a regular patron for most of my life, I can say with some confidence that Wichitans are lucky to have easy access to some of the highest quality movie theaters in the Midwest, if not the entire country.

“Classy” is a vague term that has almost been rendered meaningless by overuse, but it’s a decent way to describe seeing a movie at the Warren. Before a movie starts, the auditorium lights are dim, everything is

clean and the speakers are playing film scores.

Compare that to theaters in other cities, where it’s common to see television commercials on the screen and hear pop music blaring from the speakers.

Sometimes, those two things combine with garish lighting to create an unpleasant atmosphere unfit for cinema.

The seats are adequately comfortable, and the aisles offer enough legroom to accommodate most people. The theater employees also make purchasing concessions and getting to the auditorium a fairly expeditious process.

The three locations across Wichita each offer something unique instead of being carbon copies of one another.

The 21st Street Warren in west Wichita opened an IMAX theater in 2010, which everyone should experience at least once.

The screen is absolutely enor-

mous, and the sound system is as bombastic as you’d expect.

The Old Town Warren has a serving staff that will bring food and drinks (yes, even alcohol) directly to your seat during movies, and they do a decent job of staying out of the way. I haven’t personally seen a movie in that theater’s director’s suite — which features large, reclining seats — but those who have usually recommend it wholeheartedly.

The 13th Street Warren on the east side of town is usually where limited release films show up, so fans of less mainstream fare will feel right at home there. The big draw at that theater is the grand auditorium, which has a large balcony with reserved seats like an old-timey theater. It’s worth noting that the balcony has an age requirement of 21 years old.

Wichita’s Warren Theatres are a great place to catch the latest films.

Warren for several years, and she said it’s a great place for families.

“They do a good job of promoting kids movies,” Arebalo said. “The kids have a really good time there.”

Arebalo also said the Warren is great for escaping from the stress of daily life, which I would say is the exact purpose of a movie theater. Luckily, Wichitans have some of the best theaters around to choose from in their cinematic endeavors.

Best pizza: Knolla’s Pizza offers slices of originality

Engineering senior Mark Galimi has been a self-described diehard fan of Knolla’s Pizza since he was a little kid.

“The greatest thing about their pizza is how unique it is,” Galimi said. “The sauce is bursting with a bold tomato flavor, and the cheese always hits the spot, but the most delightful thing their pies offer is the crust — a satisfying base with a toasty outside covered in crispy bread crumbs and a soft center.

Knolla’s Pizza has been serving Wichitans since 1988, when the Knolla family opened their first pizzeria in Kansas.

“It definitely keeps us busy,” Bryan agreed. “There’s always something to do.”

Best food truck: The Flying Stove

Historically, the term “food truck” hasn’t typically been used in a positive manner. In fact, many refer to these restaurants on wheels as “roach coaches.”

The Flying Stove, as well as a few other restaurants, is changing this assumption in Wichita.

Visually, The Flying Stove is of a different caliber than the typical food truck, and it is difficult to ignore the line of individuals extending from its front window.

“I first tried [The Flying Stove] last summer at the Water Walk,” customer Kaela Moore said. “The menu is always different, but they always have truffle fries. That’s why I keep going back.”

Though customers agree the food is consistently delicious, the menu is anything but consistent. In fact, the core menu changes monthly. Custom-

ers can count on a couple of consistencies within the menu, though, such as the truck’s truffle fries, which are French fries with special seasonings — Parmesan cheese and rosemary.

Although some food trucks sell cheap, greasy food, The Flying Stove bucks this trend. Their menu, though frequently changing, always contains leafy greens and other vegetables, resembling food a customer may find in a sit-down restaurant, rather than fast food.

“We’re migrant people, we just didn’t want to be tied down by a restaurant,” owner Jeff Schauf said. “[We] liked the idea of being able to get to different varieties of people in different parts of town.”

Though their location changes daily, it is easy to track the truck’s movements. Its Facebook page lists planned locations for the week, as does its website.

“They’re amazing,” Moore said. “It’s always different, but it’s always good.”

11 Best campus production: ‘Spitfire Grill’

Wichita State’s production of “Spitfire Grill” in the fall was popular among the Wichita State community — it was voted “Best On-Campus Production.”

“I am thrilled that ‘Spitfire Grill’ made such an impact,” said junior Hannah Fernandes, who played a lead role in the production.

“Spitfire Grill” made its way to WSU in September and ran for three days.

Fernandes said the honesty of the story resonated the most with the audience.

Fernandes played the role of an ex-convict named Percy, who starts a new life in Wisconsin.

Fernandes said she got in touch with her character by visiting the Sedgwick County Jail.

There are so many misconceptions about inmates, she said, and it was eye-opening for her to see the people behind the stereotypes.

The expression, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” comes to mind, Fernandes said.

“The ‘Spitfire Grill’ has forever enriched my life,” she said, “and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to work on this show.”

Wayne Bryan, the artistic director of the Music Theatre of Wichita, directed the story that focuses on redemption.

Bryan said the play deals with social situations people encounter in real life.

“As Percy’s past is revealed, it deals with some very mature, contemporary issues,” Bryan said.

Plaza of Heroines

The GroundHouse in Shocker Hall serves the WSU community a menu of Starbucks drinks, including hot and frozen coffees and an assortment of Tazo teas.
