Behind the curtains of Koch Arena limited to working with just Wichita State Athletics since many teams rent the arena for post-season tournaments.

“If you have a high-school team and they have the ability to play at a college venue, that’s a unique experience for a kid,” Pittman said.

While the facilities staff has to make sure the outside team’s schedule works with WSU’s schedule, letting intramural championships play on the court contributes to the impression WSU leaves on the Wichita community.

“We want to be a partner for both the community and the campus,” Pittman said. “That’s what we’re here for, and that’s what we want to do.”

However, now that basketball season is here, it may be a little more challenging to play on Devlin Court as thousands of fans arrive on game day.

“Basketball is just a different animal in terms of the volume of people you have to deal with in terms of your preparation and your planning,” Pittman said.

In the last few weeks, Pittman has explored what his team has done in the past, what works, what does not and future issues that lie ahead of the facilities staff.

One issue the staff will have to work out is game day parking

The stadium is quiet and the court is empty while the lights flicker on to usher in a new day at Charles Koch Arena.

As fans enter the arena, eager to watch Wichita State Athletics, most do not consider the time and effort the Athletics staff puts in to keep the lights on and keep the arena in tip-top shape.

While the WSU Athletics marketing department seems to run the show with promotions, social media and control of the jumbotron, Koch Arena facilities staff are behind the scenes making sure everything is correct.

“Our charge is to maintain the entire facility so we have several entities that work with us,” facilities director Brad Pittman said.

Even though a custodial crew keeps Koch Arena clean and functional, the facilities staff shines once athletics gets involved.

On a typical day, facilities crews set up the arena for a practice or a game, and will transition between the two depending on the team’s needs.

Between maintenance of the floors, clocks, baskets and video boards, the facilities staff is not

WSU will face at least seven teams early in the season that finished last year in the top 100 in the basketball power index (BPI), three of those teams in the top 50.

WSU opens the season at home against New Mexico State, which finished No. 78 in the BPI and fell in the NCAA tournament to San Diego State in overtime.

The Aggies lost just two players from last year’s squad, one of which was a starter. The NMSU squad is young, as 11 of 15 players are either freshman or sophomores — expect WSU to force the Aggies to make mistakes.

WSU then travels to Memphis. The Tigers were a No. 8 seed in last year’s dance and won its first round game against George Washington before being bounced out by No. 1-seeded Virginia.

Memphis is an experienced team, having only three freshmen — expect the Tigers to do everything they can to defend their court.

Wichita State will host Tulsa, a No. 13 seed from last year’s tournament, on Nov. 29. This year’s Tulsa squad does not have a single senior, but still

The Shockers will travel to Salt Lake City to play Utah before hosting Alabama and St. Louis.

The Utah Utes and Alabama Crimson Tide both missed the tournament last season, but are expected to bounce back this season. Utah finished No. 38 in BPI and Alabama No. 86.

The match-up with St. Louis at Intrust Bank Arena might be the toughest of the bunch.

The Billikens were a No. 5 seed last year and lost in the second round to Louisville.

Had both St. Louis and WSU won their second round games, they would have met in the tournament.

The Shockers won the regular season meeting in St. Louis 70-65 behind Ron Baker’s 22 points, six rebounds and four steals.

WSU was up just one point with 14 seconds left in the game, but clutch play from Fred VanVleet and Chadrack Lufile extended the Shocker lead and ultimately closed out the victory.

St. Louis would certainly like to return the favor of last year’s home loss, which is what makes it such an attractive matchup.

Wichita State’s non-conference schedule will be difficult, but matchups like these are what the selection committee is looking for come March — WSU just needs to deliver the Ws.

“My focus this whole week has been basketball,” Pittman said, “getting ready for the game and making sure we have everything in a row. Ultimately, game day is my job start to finish.”

While Pittman cannot do everything, extensive planning and the division of job roles goes into the production of game day, especially with Koch Arena becoming more consumer-friendly when it comes to technology.

Koch Arena’s jumbotron, which was installed just before the fall semester last year, has become an essential asset in audience experience.

“When dealing with technology, you have to understand that it’s going to fail,” Pittman said.

“There are going to be occasions where you can’t get it working.

You just hope to minimize the damage as much as you can.”

Although fans have been pleased with the function of the jumbotron and other technologies, the facilities staff and the Athletic Department are working to enhance the Roundhouse experience with the addition of

Pittman, who has worked for Koch Arena for 10 years, has witnessed the demand for technological change now that the basketball program is a national force.

“We are always looking for ways to improve, and we have a

bunch of things on the table that we’re checking into,” he said.

Despite Pittman looking for ways to improve the arena, he said the game day atmosphere and experience makes Koch Arena special for fans and that is what his team strives to produce every day.

WSU should consider leaving the MVC despite geographic or monetary issues. Going to a conference such as the Atlantic 10 would increase our strength of schedule and still give us a couple Midwest opponents like Dayton and St. Louis.

The Shockers would be playing the likes of Davidson, Dayton, George Mason, UMass, Richmond, St. Joseph’s, St. Louis and VCU. Wichita State has a history of playing these teams already.

During the WSU Final Four run,

the team played VCU early and La Salle in the Elite 8. WSU played Davidson and St. Louis last season and has a matchup scheduled with the Billikens again this season.

A great rapport with the Atlantic 10 could turn into a long-lasting partnership for WSU as long as they listen to some sense and make the jump.

Fans have been calling for stronger competition — matchups with the Atlantic 10 could be just what the doctor ordered.

We all want to see WSU on ESPN, we all want to host college game day here, and the way to do that is through the Atlantic 10 — not Missouri Valley.

Gretchen Torline knows all, sees all

Behind the success of Wichita State Athletics sits Gretchen Torline.

Almost every student athlete will say Torline and her staff were instrumental in their time at WSU, both on the court and in the classroom.

As director of Athletic Academic Services, Torline advises students in each athletic program.

The job description There isn’t one. Gretchen Torline has worked at Wichita State for 24 years and said a job description cannot be put on what she and her counterparts do for the Athletic Department.

“It’s everything,” Torline said.

“We don’t tell the student athletes what to do. We help them navigate the system, make sure that they know what they’re doing, get stuff done when they need to get it done.”

Torline said going to school and playing a sport at this level is a full-time job, plus overtime. She ensures student athletes take care of academics, stay eligible, be involved in the community and take part in things to better themselves in areas other than academics and athletics.

“Give them academic support is the No. 1 thing we do,” she said.

“The best part of my job is watching my guys and gals graduate.”

The hit ABC series main character from “Scandal,” Olivia Pope and other nicknames are synonymous with Torline.

“She’s like Olivia Pope,” former player, P.J. Couisnard, said. “She knows everything. Everything that the players need or do, she runs everything.”

Randy Burns called her “Boo Boo,” Fridge Holman, “G-Money” and Torline called Couisnard “Prince Pierre” — his full name.

So, why the nicknames?

“I don’t know why,” Torline said. “I think it’s neat. I develop a

relationship with them that way.

They just always have nicknames.”

‘Icing on the cake’ In 2013, Torline told the Wichita Eagle’s Joanna Chadwick that the Final Four berth was “icing on the cake.” In a 2014 package by KWCH 12’s Lauren Seabrook, Torline again described the Shockers undefeated season as “icing on the cake.”

“That’s what I tell everybody,” Torline said. “Going to the Final Four was great ... But my job is about them getting their degree and being successful academically. [Wins are] just a perk of my job.”

It makes it hard, though, to

keep the athletes focused on classes, she said.

“If we go to the Final Four or go undefeated, that’s icing on the cake,” she said. “But watching them walk across the stage and hold their diploma, that’s the best thing.”

When they quit, she doesn’t Torline has seen a few players leave WSU without graduating. It breaks her heart, she said.

Fridge Holman left with just a few hours left and didn’t graduate.

“When the Shockers came to New York City in the NIT championship,” Holman said, “she greeted me and hugged me at Madison Square Garden as if I was still a part of the program.”

Torline remembered the encounter at the NIT. “He was living in New York and he called me and said he was going to be at the game,” Torline said. “It was the first time I’d seen him since he left. We sat and talked and I said ‘you know you have to come back to school.’ He wanted to coach at the time and he knew he needed the degree.”

Holman returned to Wichita State in 2011 and finished his degree.

When Jamar Howard left early, Torline said she was brokenhearted.

“When he left, I kept on him,” she said. “Any time I connected with him, I told him ‘You have to

come back.’ When he came back, I knew he was looking for a job so I hooked him up with the job he has now.”

Howard said Torline and head coach Gregg Marshall were influential in getting him back in school and getting his degree last year.

“They figure it out after they leave and the say, ‘Oh, you were right,’” Torline said. “But, some of them have to go off and do their thing and then figure it out. It’s hard for me when they leave and don’t make it easy on themselves.

Just suck it up. Finish it. I know you want to go on and play professionally and do other things, but finish.”

Adams puts Wichita State on the map 2008-09 Adams guided the Shockers to their first double-digit win campaign since the 2005-06 seasons, with a roster of just nine players.

The team scored the secondhighest team semester GPA on record with a cumulative 3.47 as a team.

2009-10 WSU won their first postseason game in Akron with a victory of 67-61.

2010-11

The team, led by Adams, played in the WNIT for the first time since 2000 while posting a 10-8 record in Missouri Valley Conference competition, the program’s best conference mark since the 1999-2000 campaign.

2012-13 Adams brought WSU to the NCAA Tournament for the first time. Adams was named the Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year

2013-14

Adams coached the 2013-14 Shockers to their second straight Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and post-season titles. The team collected a schoolrecord 26 wins and earned a berth into the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row. They scored the most points as a team in Shocker history, with 2,346 and led the MVC in scoring offense.

Wichita State women’s basketball is a team that has loomed in the shadow of the men’s program for years. In fact, in the 38 years of the women’s basketball program, they have only won two conference championships — 2013 and ’14.

These two trophies display the success head coach Jody Adams and senior standout Alex Harden have instilled at WSU. Wichita State has struggled to find a coach. In 2008, Adams was hired only a week after leading Murray State to a 24-8 overall record, an Ohio Valley Tournament Championship and an appearance in the NCAA tournament. She was a hire that former Wichita State athletic director Jim Schaus called “the biggest steal of the century.”

Athletic director Eric Sexton, who was hired on after Adams joined the team said, “I wish I was the one responsible for her hiring. The hire of coach Adams was a no-brainer, with all the experience as both a player and a coach, plus she brings with her a lot of impressive accolades.”

She signed the 47th and 48th ranked recruiting classes in 2010 and 2013, and both were the first two ranked recruiting classes in WSU history — including Alex Harden.

Since Harden’s arrival at WSU, she has hit the ground running and has not looked back. As a freshman, Harden was named to the MVC All-Freshmen Team, while shooting .454 from the floor during nine starts and 33 games played. Her sophomore year, she garnished MVC Tournament MVP, MVC Defensive Player of the Year, All-MVC First Team and set the school record for most games played in a single season with 34, while helping guide the Shockers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance.

onships and the first back-toback appearances in school history at the NCAA tournament. She also became the 14th ranked scorer in WSU history and 19th Shocker to reach 1,000 points in her career.

The women’s team finished 14-4 in the Valley last year, and is already tabbed to finish first

again this season. With the loss of Michelle Price, who averaged 12 points and seven rebounds per game, the Shockers will need to find a replacement to make up for that gap.

With this being the final year for Harden, a player who has spear-headed the most successful WSU women’s basketball season,

Adams is preparing for the last time she is able to coach Harden.

“Alex has been my first who exemplifies a true student athlete at the highest level,” Adams said.

“She has been one of my most coachable athletes that has allowed me to push her even after she knew she was called the best player in the conference.”

Past players weigh in on Marshall The yellow-rimmed glasses, the cocked eyebrow of disappointCOLUMN BY ment, the vein MADISON JOHNSON that looks like it’s about to burst from his forehead — all of the things one may notice about Gregg Marshall before thinking, “My God he’s a good coach.”

It can be easy to get caught up in the whirlwind that is Shocker basketball, constantly praising or insulting the actions of Marshall, who is always in the limelight.

Like other community figures, coaches can be held to a higher standard that includes how successful they are both in sport and character.

Andru Hull, a student and basketball fan at Wichita State, weighed in on how a coach’s actions and personality can affect fans.

“I think it’s important, especially for the non-diehards,” Hull said. “The coaches are the fixture for the university, while the players cycle out every four years. So it’s going to matter way more.”

This comment stirred up an intense debate among Hull and his friends, begging the question of what matters more: winning or character.

Regardless of which judgment one chooses, Marshall seems to have quite a fan base, including those who have known him personally, such as coaches and players who seem to champion for him.

One former Shocker basketball player, Jamar Howard, was not only thrilled for Marshall and WSU’s success, but was also very pleased in how Marshall — who had never coached him — treated Howard.

“I’ve talked to Marshall a few times before,” Howard said. “He’s a great guy. He’s a people person.

I love him.”

Howard said that not only did Marshall help him feel welcome in coming back to Wichita, but also helped him get back in school in order to receive his

VanVleet eyeing assists and steals record

Records are meant to be broken. And Wichita State junior guard Fred VanVleet is on his way.

Since 2000, former Shocker basketball player Jason Perez (1996-2000) has owned the all-time Shockers steals record

with 222 career steals. The player closest to that record was Touré Murry with 180 steals.

Murry (2008-12) is the owner of the all-time Shockers assists record with 430 career assists.

VanVleet is on his way to breaking both of those records.

VanVleet’s 282 career assists puts him 148 assists behind Murry, and his 104 career steals puts him behind Perez by 118.

With two full seasons left to defend the title of Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, VanVleet will break these two records if he can keep the same production from his sophomore season.

“Records are meant to be broken,” Perez said. “It’s really not my record. It’s WSU’s record.

“You gotta have a good IQ of

the game [in order to break the record] and I believe [VanVleet] does.”

Perez said VanVleet probably won’t think about possibly breaking the record until he’s much closer to it.

“As you get closer to the record, you hear more of the hype about it,” Perez said.

“I think if he does it, it’s a great accomplishment. It’s not

an easy thing to do.”

With 69 steals last season, VanVleet will pass Perez’s record by 20 steals if he has 69 steals in each of his final two years.

With his 193 assists last year, VanVleet could break Murry’s all-time assist record by the end of this season if he dishes another 193 assists this year.

It would put him ahead of Murry by 45 assists.

Alex Harden chases Shocker history books

Senior guard Alex Harden might be putting her stamp on Shocker basketball history by the end of this year.

She already has two Missouri Valley Conference tournament MVP awards, two All-MVC first

team awards and two MVC All-Defensive team awards to her name. One more award recently bestowed upon Harden was the Preseason MVC Player of the Year award.

The Springfield, Ill., native is chasing the history books as well. She has a chance to set multiple records as a Shocker, two of which are career assists and points.

Kathy Garofalo, Shocker alumna from 1978-82, currently owns the record with a total of 476 career assists.

Harden, with 324 career assists, amassed 163 assists in 33 games last year.

With 31 guaranteed games this season (not including runs into the post-season), she will need to continue her junior year average of 4.93 assists per game

in order to surpass Garofalo’s record.

With a total of 153 assists in 31 games this season, Harden will own the career assists record by one.

Shocker alumna Allison Daniel (1982-1986) has 1,638 career points — the school’s record.

Harden, with 1,147 points, needs to average almost 16

points this season in order to pass Daniel’s record.

If she continues her pace from last year, she’ll own this record easily.

Last year, she averaged 17 points per game. 17 per game will give Harden a total of 1,674 career points.

All eyes will be on Harden as she tries to brand her name into the record books.

Former WSU basketball players: Where are they now?

Wichita State basketball has a long-running history with NBA greats from the WSU program such as Antoine Carr, Cliff Levingston and Xavier McDaniel.

We now have a new era of professional players to follow in the NBA and overseas.

Cleanthony Early Hopefully no one has forgotten this guy already. The 6-foot-8inch forward from New York is now playing for the New York Knicks, drafted 34th overall in last year’s draft. Early helped lead the Shockers to the Final Four two seasons ago and was part of the historic 35-1 run.

Touré Murry Murry played for WSU 200812, quietly leading WSU to its first NIT Championship, averaging 11 points per game. Murry went undrafted in 2012, but found a home in the D-League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers who won the D-League finals that season. The New York Knicks picked up Murry for the following season, but he now plays for the Utah Jazz.

David Kyles Another member of the NIT team, Kyles played as the sixth man and had 17 double-digit scoring games in his final season with WSU. Kyles now plays in the Greek Basket League for AEK Athens. He continues his sixth man role, averaging five points per game.

Joe Ragland now plays for EA7 Emporio Armani Milano in Italy.

Joe Ragland WSU’s point guard for the NIT run, Ragland now plays for EA7 Emporio Armani Milano in the Italian league Euroleague.

Ragland has one MVP award to his name in the Euroleague and signed a two-year deal in July.

Garrett Stutz The last of the NIT team, the 7-foot Stutz was a force for the Shockers. He anchored the Shockers, averaging 16 points and seven rebounds per game. Stutz now plays for CEZ Nymburk in the VTB United League in the Czech Republic. Stutz starts for Nymburk and averages 12 points and nine rebounds. Stutz has helped lead CEZ Nymburk to back-to-back championships.

Bowles keeps head in game from sidelines

Shocker Maniacs now official WSU fan club

What has been an outlet for those who exude Shocker pride has now become the official student fan club of Wichita State Athletics. Shocker Maniacs allows those who bleed black and yellow an entertainment experience.

“Shocker Maniacs is a part of the Athletic Department, which gives students access to a lot of different things such as meet and greets with players and coaches

and the chance to attend exclusive watch parties,” Shocker Maniacs President Caroline King said.

To become a Maniac, applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student at WSU. Download the Shocker Maniacs application, available on both iPhones or Android, and check in at each attended sporting event.

King said checking in earns points, which will enter students into drawings for prizes.

As a generous incentive for the 1,700 students already registered, Maniacs are given priority access to games and T-shirts, meet and

greets, memorabilia and more.

Student Dani Galloway recently won front row seats to the first men’s basketball game.

“It must have been a random drawing because I was completely surprised,” Galloway said.

While attending a cookout at Shocker Hall, Galloway overheard people discussing incentives by just downloading the app.

“It’s really easy to be a member,” Galloway said. “Even students who only go to one sporting event can still use the app and benefit from it. I highly recommend it.”

It was just another normal day for D.J. Bowles as he dribbled near half court, running his daily point-guard workout.

Feeling a little woozy, he pauses at the top of WuShock’s head. Dizziness set in and Bowles passed out.

Doctors attributed this episode to an unknown heart condition and told Bowles if he continued to play, he could be endangering his life. Surgeons immediately implanted a defibrillator and gave Bowles a heart monitor to keep at home that sends occasional reports to his doctor.

Now, a year later, Bowles can only sit on the sidelines and watch the sport he grew up playing.

“It was really hard on me,” Bowles said. “I’ve been playing all my life. You’ve always got to have a backup plan.”

Bowles said he does “a little bit of everything” to fill the void where basketball used to reside. He still attends basketball practices as if he were

playing for the team and he can participate in mild forms of exercise such as weight lifting.

Finding replacements for something he did every day, all day is still difficult.

“It was a big learning experience for me,” Bowles said. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is being responsible, and you’ve got to give [everything] your all.”

Bowles is at every practice, every day. He said it’s the same old stuff — coaches are on him about his grades — he just isn’t playing.

Bowles could have gone to another school to play basketball since it was only the WSU medical staff that barred him from playing, but he decided the risk was not worth it.

Being dismayed from this experience is not Bowles’ attitude about his misfortune.

On the contrary, Bowles said he hopes that his doctors will be able to use his case to solve other heart problems before they occur.

“It’s unexplained,” Bowles said. “I hope they can figure it out so they can help someone else. They could know before they have to quit playing.”

Marshallville ready for another exciting season

It was once an idea for students to rally and tailgate before basketball games. The idea has now transformed into a haven outside Charles Koch Arena for those who bleed the black and yellow — a place to gather and cheer angry.

A place called “Marshallville.”

Junior Max Runyon adopted the idea in 2013 after witnessing what other universities had that Wichita State did not — a loyal band of rallying fans.

“A lot of other predominant schools have a very spirited tailgating party,” Runyon said, “or some kind of student involvement before games. So I thought it was important for Wichita State to have that too.”

As the campaign reached students campus wide, it also reached the community by supporting a charity close to head coach Gregg Marshall.

The yellow Marshallville banner, which once hung outside Koch Arena at last year’s men’s basketball games, was given to the Wichita Children’s Home in August.

Marshall attended a small public gathering outside the arena where he autographed the banner in support of the organization.

“It’s a great opportunity to celebrate what our basketball

team brings to the university,” said Sam Belsan, Marshallville’s vice president. “It really just provides an opportunity to be unified.”

Belsan recounted a day when another student, whom he had never met before, approached him on campus, raving about how much she loved Marshallville.

“It was a neat interaction,” he said. “We all have a lot of different backgrounds and opinions on so many things, but when it comes to Shocker basketball, we can all come together and have a great time.”

As this year’s anticipated season begins Friday, Marshallville hopes to collaborate with other campus organizations and local radio stations to host a tailgate before a game.

In addition, they plan to have a more organized system so students can enter games with priority access.

“Since Marshallville is in a different location,” Runyon said, “we want to make sure the organization translates from Marshallville to the doors so that the people who are out there from the beginning are the first ones in the door.”

Runyon said it was interesting to see growth within Marshallville in such a short amount of time. In the beginning, there were about 15 to 20 people camped out, compared to nearly 100 by the end of the season.

“It was fun to see how it built in just one season,” he said.

“I like to think party,” he said

about Marshallville’s atmosphere.

“Power 93.5 actually added a lyric to the song ‘I’m the Man’ by Aloe

Blacc to where it said ‘Party down in Marshallville’. So I like to think party.”

Hard to build, even harder to sustain

Coming off a 35-1 season last year, all eyes are on Wichita State men’s basketball as they head in to regular season play.

There have been a few changes in lineup and coaching staff for the Shockers — four seniors graduated last year and the team lost an assistant coach.

“We had more of a veteran team last year with four seniors and a lot of guys who played as underclassman,” head coach Gregg Marshall said. “Regardless of where we are predicted to finish, we have high expectations on ourselves to do well.”

ESPN has named the Shockers a contender for the NCAA title this year.

“Last year is done,” Marshall said. “’13 is done. ’12 is done. Our job now is to continue to play at a very high level.”

The Shockers are ranked 11th in the country going into the first game of the season.

One returning player Marshall said to watch this year is junior

guard Evan Wessel. A Wichita native, Wessel helped win a state championship while at Wichita Heights High School and added to the Shockers’ winnings last season.

“Evan Wessel affects winning,” Marshall said. “He didn’t shoot the ball well last year, but he is this year already.”

Wessel was able to hit his first three-point attempt in the exhibition game last Saturday.

Wessel said he sees improvement this year, as well.

“This year, I’m going to bring more leadership and confidence to how I play,” Wessel said.

But it’s not just about the team’s record, Marshall said.

“Ultimately we want to remain relevant,” he said. “Do you expect to win 35 in a row? No. We want our boys to represent our community in a first-class way.

“I’m not afraid to pull someone off the court who isn’t working in the classroom. I’ve done it before.

It’s not all about wins and losses.

It’s about getting these young men to graduation, too.”

see some playing time this season after spending the last year as a redshirt freshman.

“I learned a lot last season,” Holland said. “I’m glad I redshirted because it gave me time to grow and watch what Fred and

Ron do.

“Last year, I bet no one predicted we would go 35-0.”

After losing four seniors last year, Holland said Marshall reminds the team to look ahead because of the change in lineup.

“This is a new year,” Holland said. “Coach says we have to hang our own banners, and that is exactly what we plan to do this year.”

The men play New Mexico State at 8 p.m. Friday at Koch Arena.

Put Jamar Howard in the Shocker Sports Hall of Fame

There are 28 men’s basketball players in Wichita State’s Pizza COLUMN BY Hut Shocker JAMES KELLERMAN Sports Hall of Fame. There are a few players that are not in the coveted Hall, but one of them has a strong case for an induction — Jamar Howard.

Howard played for Wichita State University from 2001-05 under former head coach Mark Turgeon. It’s tough to find many players that are as decorated and distinguished in the history of WSU basketball than Howard.

It’s easy to see why he hasn’t been inducted, considering only two players from the 2000’s have been included. Paul Miller, a teammate and member of the same recruiting class as Howard, was inducted in 2013, and Jason Perez (1996-2000) was inducted in 2014.

Wichita State only had two winning seasons in the 1990’s, and the year before Howard came to play for WSU, the team went 9-19 in Turgeon’s first

year as head coach.

Once Howard stepped on the court, the program’s losing ways were history. In his first season, the team improved to 15-15, and it was uphill from there.

Starting all four seasons as a Shocker, Howard helped the program achieve numerous milestones.

As a sophomore, he assisted WSU in beating No. 12-ranked Creighton. It was WSU’s first victory over a ranked opponent since the 1990 season and Howard was largely responsible for the upset. He held Creighton’s star player and current NBA player Kyle Korver to two points in the first half.

He also helped the team improve to an 18-12 record and WSU’s first postseason bid to the NIT since 1989.

As a junior, Howard helped the Shockers improve to 21-11 and obtained another NIT bid.

By his senior year, the team made its third straight trip to the NIT and finished the season with a 22-10 record.

Howard’s teams were able to do all of that in his time at WSU, and we haven’t even

breached the subject of “Jamar the individual player” yet.

“Defense doesn’t show stats, so people don’t remember what he was and what he did as a whole,” said Craig Steven, a former teammate of Howard’s.

“When we needed a bucket, he’d get it — or a tip-in — or he’d get a steal and fast break and lay it in. If you want to base it (Howard being inducted) on one of the best defenders to play at Wichita State, then yeah. Bottom line, he is.”

Howard was a two-time all-MVC first team member, a runner-up to Valley Player of the Year as a junior and named to four straight all-MVC defensive teams. He was also named the defensive player of the year in 2003.

While he was mainly known for his defense, Howard scored in the double-digits each year.

Almost 10 years after leaving WSU, Howard is still ranked as the ninth leading scorer of all-time as a Shocker. He’s also seventh all-time in field goal percentage, third all-time in steals and 10th all-time in blocked shots.

Wichita Eagle named him the team’s most valuable player.

Shocker Radio named him the most outstanding defensive player all four years. He was given the Ralph Miller Captain’s Award as a senior, and also received the Xavier McDaniel Rebounding Award three straight seasons, which had to be difficult since he played alongside Paul Miller for those three years.

After college, he made the Continental Basketball Association’s All-Star game while being a member of the Great Falls Explorers.

He played for the Dodge City Legends where he was named to the United States Basketball League’s All-Defensive team.

Then he decided to play a year in Nordlingen, Germany where his team won the German Pro A championship in his first year.

I guess the real question would be if Howard is surprised that he hasn’t been inducted yet.

“No,” Howard said with a smile on his face. “That wasn’t my goal. My goal was to go out there and play my heart out. It

wasn’t for the awards or anything like that. It was for pride. I know I gave it my all and I’m satisfied with that.

“If I was inducted, it would be a great feeling. I think that would come from the fans. It’d show that they still have love, and appreciate what I did do while I was here. So yeah, I don’t know what to say to be truthful. It would be a proud moment, definitely.”

Howard gave a lot to the WSU program, and it is time for the program to give a small token back.

WSU’s basketball media guide gives the qualifications for being nominated and it states, “Membership is by public nomination and vote by the Hall of Fame Board of Directors. Eligible candidates can be nominated after reaching nine years following their first enrollment at Wichita State.”

If it is by public nomination, then I nominate Jamar Howard to be inducted into the WSU Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame.

Leaving Wichita State: New BGSU head coach Chris Jans exit interview

Chris Jans came to Wichita State University as an assistant coach to head coach Gregg Marshall.

After helping the Shockers go from an 11-win team in his first year to the historical 35-win team last year, Jans was hired as the head coach of Bowling Green State University.

What did you like most about your job at Wichita State?

“Winning. We’re all very competitive in this industry.

The be all, end all is to be a part of a winning program. Winning solves a lot of problems. Seems when you win, the food tastes better, the coffee tastes better, you’ve got a little more bounce in your step.”

What was the least favorite part of your job at Wichita State?

“During the process, certainly there were times when you may have disliked certain days or weeks or hours, but as you look back the journey itself is probably one of the most gratifying experiences that you’ll go through. We literally started at the bottom with winning 11 games in our first year and there were some tough times those first couple of years.

There were times, I think, even in our second year where as coaches we’d look at one another and be like ‘Can we do this? Can we get this thing over the top?’

“But, the toughest time turned into one of the neatest times because we were playing Creighton at home and the crowd — it was a blackout — the crowd was unbelievable and I remember coach Marshall looking around and we were talking about how this fan base is unbelievable and they deserve a winner.”

Biggest difference between what you came into at Wichita State compared to what you’re going into at Bowling Green?

“The biggest difference between what we inherited at Wichita State compared to what we’re inheriting at Bowling Green — ­ I think the first thing after the dust has settled, at Bowling Green we have nine juniors and seniors and four freshmen and sophomores on scholarship. I don’t know what we had at Wichita State, but I bet they pale in comparison in terms of the number of upperclassmen that we have so that’s a positive for us.

“The other thing is it’s been a long time since they’ve won at Bowling Green whereas at Wichita State — even though we didn’t win in that first year — we were two years removed from going to a Sweet 16. So, people in and around that program, the leadership that was in place, they had been around winning, they knew what it took to win.

Where here it’s been a long time since they’ve won at that level so we’ve got a lot of change that needs to happen up and down the ladder with people that are responsible for helping this program.”

Most memorable moment?

“The National Anthem at the Final Four, where coach and I were shoulder to shoulder and we’re lined up in front of our bench. There was this flood of people that ran onto the floor and we weren’t privy to what was going on.

“In hindsight, they were getting in their formation to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Final Four. They were spelling out 75 on the floor which obviously from our perspective, we couldn’t see that.

But it was so choreographed, so fast and so many moving parts and we weren’t prepared for it.

I’ve never been on the floor for

something like that.

“Then to look up and just see the sea of humanity to be down there on the court with 75,000 people watching, standing there with coach. We had a short conversation before they played the Star Spangled Banner and it went something like, Coach would point out, ‘Hey, there’s Robert Kraft’ and ‘Hey, there’s Will Ferrell.” I would say, ‘Hey there’s so and so.’ I looked at him and said, ‘Man, I feel like we’re at the Super Bowl,’ and coach looked at me and said, ‘We are.’”

What was it like when you told the WSU team that you were taking the Bowling Green job?

“Emotional. Very emotional.

Unfortunately, in the world we live in today with social media and instant news and gratification, it’s hard to keep things under your belt and I wanted to be able to tell them in person before it got out.

“Unfortunately, it leaked a little bit before I got to tell them.

Obviously you’re coming on the heels of our first loss and only loss of the season, which was hard enough. Then to have to tell the kids that you grinded with and worked with and won with and lost with and had so many neat memories behind the scenes that you’ll cherish forever, but to tell those young men that it was time to move on, was hard.”

What will you miss the most?

“Probably gameday. Koch Arena and the Wichita State Shocker nation is one of a kind.

This is my 23rd year now. When you walk out of that tunnel, I don’t know how many games we played in the seven years that I coached there, but it’s special each and every time. It’s unique, and that’s special, and it’s because of the fans. I always tell people there’s a special relationship between the community

Final Four 50th anniversary: Bob Powers speaks on then, now

That is how Bob Powers described the first team in Wichita State University’s history to play in the NCAA Final Four.

“We would not quit,” Powers said of the 1964-65 team. “No matter how hard things got, we would not quit.”

With the 50th anniversary of the first WSU Final Four approaching this season, Powers takes a look back on his Shocker days.

“And if you were there in the ’60s, you would know what I’m talking about,” he said. “You just have to believe what I’m telling you.”

Powers and the 1964-65 men’s basketball team, led by head coach Gary Thompson, made history when Andy Griffith was on prime-time television and Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” made the Billboard hot 100.

The historic team also made waves during a time of war and racism, but Powers said the team was not influenced by outside distractions.

When walking to class, Powers said he and his teammates would frequently come across Vietnam War demonstrations. When traveling to different locations to play, Powers said racism was a huge issue in a lot of the towns the team would play in.

“As athletes, we didn’t know what was going on,” Powers said.

“We had nothing to do with that stuff. We saw it happening, but we were caught up in our sports and our classes.”

With almost a 50-year gap, times have changed, but the Shocker mentality has not, Powers said.

“Every guy on our team was totally committed to the team, and that’s exactly how Coach Marshall’s men are,” he said.

Powers said he thinks the current team has all the necessary ingredients to get to the Final Four.

“I honestly believe that,” Powers said.

Powers, alongside his teammates who posted a 19-7 record and won the Missouri Valley Conference title, attended a recent practice with the 2014-15 team, which will open the season ranked No. 11 in the

Associated Press Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll.

“They are a unit,” Powers said about watching the men in action. “My blood started flowing. I’m 70 and I felt like a kid again.”

Powers believes the team is going to go far. He also had advice to give the team.

“I would say the words of Jimmy Valvano, ‘Always remember from whence you came,’ and never let all the other stuff get in your head,” Powers said. “Always remember how you got there.”

“Because of that, not having to have any wins or losses, it’s fun right now. But, I understand here in a few weeks we’ll have to step up and play some games, and I think that part will come into play more on gamenight.”

For as long as he can remember, basketball has been a part of Kellen Marshall’s life.

On the court before he could walk, Kellen has seen his father — head coach Gregg Marshall — coach two teams to victorious seasons, not including the team Gregg coached when Kellen was born.

“I’ve always grown up around this type of life — going to practices and games with my dad,” Kellen said. “A lot of people think it’s weird but I’m used to it.”

Going into the eighth season of Shocker basketball and halfway through his senior year at Trinity Academy, Kellen holds the experiences he’s had at his father’s side closely. His said his favorite memory was the atmosphere he witnessed during the Final Four run.

“It was very special,” he said.

“I won’t forget it. I pretty much shadowed my dad the whole time.”

Being raised by a Division I basketball coach, Kellen said he has gained a knowledge for the sport despite not playing.

During practices, he said he will often step in and help run scouting plays, help run drills and his favorite ­­— closeout drills — where he must attempt to score on defending players.

“I’ve done [closeout drills] a couple hundred times and I’ve only scored once,” Kellen said.

“That shows how hard it is.”

Kellen is not only valuable to

his father on the court, but also off the court. Kellen said he tends to stick around the locker rooms to visit with the players after practices. This helps him distinguish the dynamics of different players and how the players felt about practice.

“I get to see a little different side,” Kellen said. “Maybe I’ll say [to dad] so-and-so didn’t understand what was going on tonight, talk to this guy or help this guy out.”

Kellen also knows the game in the aspect of the NCAA league. During the last several seasons, his Twitter account has become increasingly popular amongst followers of Shocker basketball.

Kellen remembers a specific occurrence last season of when he and an ESPN writer had a friendly debate regarding the difficulty of the Shocker’s schedule versus Syracuse’s.

“The ESPN writer told me via Twitter that Syracuse had a much better schedule,” Kellen said. “Then I looked at ESPN’s own website and found that our schedule was 20 slots higher.”

Kellen said he met the writer later in the season who told Kellen he had fun debating with him.

“I voice [things] for those who will get in trouble if they voice it themselves,” Kellen said.

Kellen said that he’s been fortunate to work with the best staff in the country. He’s not sure where his graduation will take him at this point, though WSU is one of three schools he has applied to for next fall.

Time restraints dominate student athletes’ lives

After a long day of volleyball training, Division I athletics, an internship, school and everything else, Jordan Hinkle is tired.

Like Hinkle, many students have experienced just how hectic life of a college athlete can be and how necessary time management becomes in their everyday lives.

“In season we averaged around 20 hours a week and were allowed one day off every 13 days,” Hinkle said.

While 20 hours may be the norm at Wichita State for the maximum amount of time an athlete dedicates to his or her sport, these times can vary.

According to “Do College Athletes Have Time to Be Students?” from CBS News, men’s Division I baseball accumulated 42.1 hours a week, men’s basketball dropped a little lower at 39.2 and women’s basketball fell in at 37.6.

Considering these hours, that is nearly a full time job, not to mention the fact that playing a sport is considered “extracurricular.”

However, the hours found by CBS News are most likely not considering the amount of travel time that athletes endure just to get to their road games.

“In season there’s always more time dedicated because we’re on the road so often,” said Hinkle. “At that time I would try to get all my homework and studying done on

the bus because once you’re at your hotel, you’re in game mode so it’s hard to focus.”

Hinkle said the first six weeks of her spring semester were easier when it came to volleyball, despite the conditioning early in the morning and three individual, 40-minute practices required throughout the week.

Although Hinkle said did have a busy schedule, she also enjoyed the freedom to have weight lifting sessions on her own rather than a specific time with the whole team that could lead to scheduling conflicts.

In “Playing college sports: A long, tough job” by Chris Isidore from CNNMoney, Wichita State’s student athlete hours, or at least the ones reported, compare nothing to Northwestern Universi-

ty’s football program which logs 50 to 60 hours a week preseason.

Unsurprisingly, the amount of time college athletes are required to spend in their sport, whether they have scholarship or not, can make it difficult to find study time.

While Wichita State students have required study hall hours if they fall behind a 3.0 GPA, sometimes study hall can be seen as just another activity on their list of never-ending things to do or accomplish.

“If I didn’t write a schedule down daily or weekly, I would fall behind pretty quickly,” Hinkle said. “I’m the type of person that if I don’t write it down, I’m not going to do it.”

Zach Bush, a redshirt sophomore for the basketball team, weighed on his time management

and commitments that he has dealt with since joining the team in 2012.

“It can be pretty hard to study sometimes,” Bush said, “and it takes quite a bit of self discipline when you’re tired, hungry and thirsty after a long day of classes and then an even longer day of practice.”

While Bush said there is not a whole lot of time for extra activities during the season, being in athletics teaches one to become timely.

Though Hinkle said she was particularly busy through her college career, she said she had the best of both worlds by being able to play volleyball, enjoy her field of study and gain abilities of time management she thoroughly believed she did not start with.
