BY SUZANNE LINDGREN EDITOR@OSCEOLASUN.COM
By Suzanne Lindgren editor@osceolasun.com For decades, Sue and Jon Everson have melded family, work and community in a way that appears seamless. She, a mother and the owner of Unlimited Styling salon for 29 years, has volunteered with the chamber of commerce, helping plan Wheels & Wings and the village’s craft fair, and sitting on various downtown retail promotion committees. He, a father, prison guard and detective, was also a chamber member and was active on the Wheels & Wings committee for 25 years. He is the CFO and chaplain of the Osceola American Legion, and was an animal warden in Polk County for 22 years. In recognition of the couple’s decades of community service and dedication to local commerce, the Osceola Community Fair Board invited them to ride as grand marshals in this year’s parade. The invitation came to Sue shortly after she retired, closing the doors at her salon at the end of June. “It’s been a long run but a good run,” Jon said of the salon. “She was one of the first ladies on main street in business.” Turning to Sue, he added, “You should be proud.” Although a little resistant to the spotlight, she agreed to the honor. And asked if Jon could join her. “You never find one pea in a pod,” Jon smiled. “There’s very little we don’t do together.” Sue, originally from Stillwater, moved to Osceola in the early 1980s after meeting Jon, who was born and raised in Osceola. They met on a blind date set up by Sue’s mother and a friend who worked with Jon. He was smitten right away. “It was that look on her face and her bib overalls,” he said. “That’s what got me.” “I thought he seemed like a nice guy,” said Sue. “But he

didn’t ask me for my number.” “I was shy,” Jon said. They married in October 1983, each bringing a child from their previous marriage to the union. In the subsequent years balancing work, family and community endeavors, the Eversons seem to have struck equilibrium without much drama. “When your community becomes a big part of your life, it also becomes a big part of your children’s lives,” explained Sue. “Our daughter ran for Miss Osceola. Our grandchildren volunteer at Christian Community Home. It’s a well-rounding of community pride in the whole family.” “Community is family,” added Jon. “It should be.” “Believe me, if there was something to be done the kids SEE GRAND MARSHAL, PAGE 13

Grand Marshal from page 3 got dragged into doing it too,” Sue laughed. “They enjoyed it though,” added Jon. Their children, now married with children of their own — Dana and Matt Krenz, and Jeffery and Stacy Everson — are raising their families in Osceola. Now in semi-retirement, Jon works about 30 hours a week as a detective. Sue is organizing twice-yearly sales at the couple’s barn venue. They bought the farm, once Jon’s uncle’s, four years ago. His uncle and grandmother had run the farm for about 40 years. It was sold out of the family, but when Jon saw it up for sale again, he jumped at the opportunity. Since then, the Eversons have been
working diligently to turn the barn into an event venue. They call it Shady Acres, the name Jon’s uncle gave the farm in the 1940s. They’ve had three weddings this year and have more booked for next year. And after success holding a spring vintage and antiques sale, they’re planning another for fall. They plan to hold both sales annually. Reflecting on their lives in Osceola, the Eversons have fond memories of pitching in around town. “I feel like we’re a close knit community and whatever we do for each other helps everybody,” said Sue. “And it was a lot of fun. We’ve had a lot of giggles and laughs over the years. “And the satisfaction of when the event actually takes off, to the end,”
Jon added. “The looks on people’s faces, and seeing the kids having fun. […] You are the community and without it you have no community.” Said Sue: “When you get involved in your community and meet people and get to know people, it’s like an extended family. […] It’s been great.” “It’s been a great run,” Jon agreed. “I don’t think I’d change anything. I was born and raised here. I went into the United States Air Force but I still came back and planted my roots here. There are a lot of nice places in the world but this is where I settled down.” Sue agreed. “There’s no place I’d rather be.”
