SAVE increases collaboration with Hoboken Green Team

by JAY RUNGTA Staff Writer

SAVE recently volunteered to pair up with the Hoboken Green Team, one of the largest local initiatives, to work on improving our community’s environmental issues. SAVE (Student Against Violating the Earth) is campus’s environmental club; they strive to make Stevens greener and more sustainable. The Hoboken Green Team consists of volunteers who meet monthly to resolve environmental issues that concern the local community. Because of the Green Team’s efforts, Hoboken was awarded bronze level of the Sustainable Jersey certification in both 2014 and 2011. The Sustainable Jersey certification is a prestigious accreditation for municipalities in

New Jersey recognized by the state government. SAVE volunteers attended the last two Green Team meetings, where important programs were discussed – like the Plastic Bag Reduction Program, Hoboken Green Business Recognition Program, and Hoboken Harvest. At the same time, a possible collaboration with SAVE for joint initiatives was discussed. “We’ve worked with them in the past for smaller collaborations like park clean ups, but this year I’m definitely hoping to do much more,” said Anthony Rusignuolo, Vice President of SAVE, and also the President of Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW). “I’m hoping to have SAVE and ESW work with them [the Green Team] to develop an education outreach curriculum for grade schoolers that’s focused on sustainability in the

STEM field, as well as have greater collaboration on Stevens’s annual Earth Week festivities to attract more people to campus.” Earth Week is an annual event in April, full of fun team events that aim to instill sustainable culture in all Stevens students, faculty and staff. Spring 2017 will be the fourth annual Earth Week celebration at Stevens. In addition to these plans, there have also been talks about organizing panel debates on topics like recycling and composting in the future, to further promote sustainability. SAVE, ESW and the Hoboken Green Team are always looking for more members to help improve the community culture and health. Nonmembers are welcome to attend their meetings and contact SAVE at save@ stevens.edu, or ESW at esw-sit@stevens.edu.

Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton are fighting hard to prove to the American people that they deserve the chance to serve the American people. In the week since the final presidential debate, there have been many new revelations coming from both sides of the aisle. Trump has been gaining momentum according to recent polls, especially since he laid out a “contract” with the American people regarding his plans for his first 100 days in office. However, his campaign continues to be dragged down by his offthe-cuff remarks. On the other side, Clinton and her campaign surrogates have been campaigning, but at the same time, Clinton continues to deal with more WikiLeaks emails and Project Veritas videos. The polls make this race too close to call, especially when the polls are applied to the electoral college. Trump has been fighting harder then ever this week, especially in the key swing state of Florida. Without the state of Florida, it is likely that Trump will lose the election. Trump has remained on message and has put out his “contract” with the American people, which includes going after

APO elects Paciulli for 2017 President, invites National President

Clinton has continued to run her campaign the same way she has from day one. Although Clinton may not be holding as many rallies as Trump, she has her surrogates, such as President Obama and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders doing that for her. Clinton is trying to fire up her base with these surrogates, who are favored by the Democratic Party. Clinton’s campaign team has had to deal with a lot of damaging information over the past week, though. This week, WikiLeaks released thousands of new emails from her campaign manager, John Podesta. These emails have hurt her and the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Clinton

10 DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY November 8 Washington corruption, border security, repealing the Affordable Care Act, tax cuts, and much more. On the other hand, since the debate, the media has been focused on Trump’s comments regarding whether or not he would accept the results of the election. According to his campaign team, Trump meant to say that he was not going to accept the results if the election was too close to call. Critics continued to slam Trump, saying that his remarks would be likely political suicide for any normal candidate. Trump has remained on message with the exception of a few moments in which he discussed the women accusing him of sexual assault. Trump says he will sue them after the election for their false claims.

Alex Paciulli was elected Alpha Phi Omega - Theta Alpha’s 2017 Chapter President, and the rest of the executive board will be elected in the following weeks. Paciulli previously held the positions of Secretary for 2016 and Alumni Secretary in 2015. Under her term, APO plans to increase the number of events and their total community service hour count. Trevor Batchelder, 2016 Chapter President, is really motivated to continue leading the organization because of the “opportunity to mentor and advance brothers to meet their best potentials,” such as developing their leadership qualities. APO is a national organization that formed in 1925 upon the principles of the Boy Scouts of America. APO now consists of 370+ chapters. The Theta Alpha chapter at Stevens was chartered in 1949 and recommissioned in 2000 after a period of inactivity from the 60’s. APO is a coed organization, though termed fraternity. Currently, the Stevens APO chapter has over 200 members on campus with about 150 brothers, and 47 new members, who work together to successfully host or help out with many events. This year, APO’s National President, the Honorable John K. Ottenad (or as they like to call him - JKO or “Silver Fox”) spoke to APO’s new members and brothers. He spoke of his experiences being part of APO, and encouraged all members to feel fortunate that they have received this opportunity to grow and learn together. Ottenad also acknowledged the Stevens chapter for all of the work done on campus, for the Hoboken community, and beyond. He hailed the Theta Alpha chapter “one of the best chapters of Alpha Phi Omega in the nation.” One of the organization’s recent awards included receiving the Distinguished Service Award at the Spring 2016 Stu-
