This past weekend Steven’s very own Off Center participated in the national round of the ninth College Improv Tournament National Championships held in Chicago, Illinois, proceeding their victory in the Big Apple regional earlier in the year. Off center sent a competitive team to represent Stevens at the National round. The competition began with an improv jam with the other teams on Friday evening. They performed their first set at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, competing with two other regional champions with a wild card team. Off Center was able to win first place in the first bracket, which gave them the title of the East Super Regional Champions. This victory allowed the improv team to move to the top four, allowing Off Center to face off the winners of the re-

maining three Super Regionals. Off Center’s hard effort and two hilarious sets won them fourth place in the nation, among 136 total teams, and first place in the East Super Region. Along with winning fourth in the nationals, the Off Center team won some fans at the competition, according to former president Zack Kastner, “Even though we got 4th place, one judge gave us a first place vote. Pretty crazy to think that there’s a person out there who considers Off Center to be the best team in the country.” The Off Center team stressed that their main concern was having fun and putting on an entertaining show. According to Chris Fitzgerald, Off Center president, the team was able to win against teams that had coaches and those that consisted of theater majors, all because they were simply having fun with their friends, which an important factor in improv. Improv is supposed to

come naturally when one is simply having fun, not concerned about winning. Jonathan Pitts, CIT Nationals Producer and the executive director of CIP, who also cofounded the Chicago improv festival, was a relaxing part of the competition. He helped keep the teams calm before the competition and gave the atmosphere a feeling of collaboration instead of competitiveness.

On Wednesday, 144 Senior Design teams showcased their projects at Stevens Innovation Expo 2016. The projects presented at the expo encompassed everything from Sustainability to Robotics to Education and the Arts, and drew in the largest crowd to ever attend an Innovation Expo at Stevens. In Canavan Arena, Walker Gymnasium, and the Griffith Building, 544 students split into 144 teams presented their Senior Design projects. All of these teams had spent either the past two or three semesters working on sponsored consulting, entrepreneurial or product development projects in order to gain real-world experience by working on real-world problems. Of the several projects presented at the expo were a sustainable and resilient playground, an automated surface cleaning robot, and the infamous HangoverLyte beverage. “It all seems so effortless, and yet the students work really diligently for a year,” said Sandra Furnbach Clavijo, Manager of the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and one of the Innovation Expo’s organizers. “It’s just really nice seeing campus come together to see

their work.” The expo drew in not only Stevens students, but employers and members of the general public as well, including Thomas Kean Jr., a member of the New Jersey State Senate. After the seniors had presented their projects, attendees were welcomed to attend a lecture on the future of research, a research networking session, and a lecture on the history of the internet. Later in the day, Senior Design teams were invited to compete for $16,000 in total prizes in the Elevator Pitch and Business Service Pitch competitions, sponsored by the ANSARY foundation. First place for the Elevator Pitch Competition was won by the WHISPER team. Coming in first for the Business Service Pitch Competition was the Nuclear Solutions team. “It took a lot of staff, member and department coordination, and everyone working really hard to put [the expo] together,” said Clavijo. Stevens Innovation Expo 2016 was innovative in its own regard, having come up with new ways of branding itself. This was the first year for which a promotional video was made to advertise the event to employers and businesses, and a recap video is being made in order to spark interest in the same audience for next year’s expo.
