Stute Board notes an article in a recent issue of the Observer in which either the Observer reporter or the reporter's informant is in error. The article is about base-ball a t Stevens and in several places it refers to the varsity base ball-team," "the Stevens base ball team," etc. If the reporter is in error, we believe, he should make correction in the columns of the paper.

If the informant is in error we desire to say that he is making a mistake in so misrepresenting the facts. The base-ball team, as at present proposed, is not a Stevens varsity team and no one is justified in so representing it. Don't get the wrong impression.

Stute is not wow talking for or against base-ball. We are, however, talking against misn$wesentation in general.

Graduation Wee&-Its

Needs.

Graduation week this year' begins with Sunday, June 18th.

Graduation does mean-should mean-a great deal in College life. Stevens has, we think we are justified in saying, been slow in adopting as part of the program, those things which add so much to the pleasure and memory of the farewell week."

Last year several improvements were introduced. Class Day was full of events. The Faculty-Senior Baseball game was of interest. The Juniors reception to the Seniors was amark of, advancement as well as the cap and gown idea. Such were the new ideas and together with the older, more established customs we had a graduation week of which we were proud. We want a better one this year. We ought to have the Baccalaureate Sermon in the Auditorium of the Institute on Sunday afternoon.

We ought to have a renowned speaker. The Alumni Lacrosse Game should be arranged for graduation week. The Sophomores should arrange to have the Calculus Cremation" come during the same week. I n short we are strongly in favor of more excitement so that when our Sisters and Cousins, Aunts and Uncles and Ma's and Pa's come up to town on Sunday every event of enjoyment will have been arranged for their pleasure and the Seniors get a good strong "bounce" off into space -future engineering.

Colleg-e customs-unique, exclusive-are often as much a part of college as the outlined curriculum. Customs well established make characteristic an event which might otherwise mean little or nothing in college life. Graduation needs improvement as regards customs and we desire to urge every member of the Faculty and every undergraduate to consider well, even now, this question of the upbuilding of college customs, especially those surrounding graduation.

~ a s Call t for Link.

The Link Board takes this means of notifying the student . body that all manuscript, sketches and other material must be in the hands of the members of the Board not later than Wednesday, March 15th. On that day all the material for the book will be sent to Wright & Co. of Philadelphia, Publishers, to whoa the contract for printing has been awarded. The contract for the engraving has been awarded to the Electric City Engraving , Company of Buffalo, N. Y. The engraving done by this Company will be cheaper and better than any done heretofore and partly on this account and partly on account of the excellence of the sketches furnished by the students and their friends, the illustrations will be a feature of the book.

I n a previous issue of the STUTE,announcement was made that the Link Board had voted to permit the Prep. Seniors to publish their class picture and an account of their dance in this year's issue of the Link. This motion was passed by the Board, but since that action did not seem to meet with the approval of the student body of the Institute, the motion has been rescinded.

The support given by the student body this year has been better than that of previous years, both in a financial way and in the matter of sketches. The Freshman Class in particular has given us its hearty support. The editors feel confident that the Link for which the class of 1906, will stand sponsor on Monday, May ist, will be a book worthy of Stevens and her BOARDOF EDITORS. loyal sons.

Alumni Association.

On the evening of March 16, the Alumni Association held a meeting in the Auditorium followed by a light collation in the Carnegie baboratory. President R. M. Anderson, who has been engaged in some work in Mexico, had made arrangements to come up and officiate at the meeting, which, through some misunderstanding, he thought to be set for March 9. Business obligations necessitated his return before the meeting took place.

Owing to this unhappy circumstance the duty of calling the meeting to order devolved upon the Vice-president, Prof. Wm. Bristol. Among other business, Mr. J. H . Cuntz reported for the Alumni Athletic Committee, and said in part that the past football season was a very creditable showing for a team with. only one season's training. He drew attention to the excellent showing of college spirit manifested at the Rutgers game akd asked the Alumni to endeavor to get out to the games during the coming season.

Prof. l?urman reported considerable trouble in getting out the Memorial Volume. The printer to whom the contract had been awarded had gone bankrupt and a sample was then procured from the receivers. The work was so poorly done, however, that Prof. Flu-man was going- to ask for improvement or relet the contract.

President Humphreys spoke briefly of the plan to put the chemical laboratory on the property on River Street, between Fifth and Sixth Streets.* He said, in closing, that it would in all probability be the best chemical laboratory, in connection with an engineering school, in the world.

Prof. Bristol then called on Mr. John W. l i e b , President of the A. I. 1$. E., who had recently been knighted by the King of Italy, to make a few remarks. Mr. Lieb spoke of the high reputation of Stevens Institute in Europe and expressed surprise at the great amount of work that is being accomplished at Stevens with the small means at the command of the Faculty.

I n closing his remarks he suggested greater co-operation between the Alumni and the Faculty. Prof. Bristol called the attention of the members to the fact that Stevens again had a college paper. In this connection Mr. Cuntz was kind enough to state that he believed much of the success of the past football season was directly ascribable to STUTE. Prof. Kroeh said a few words about the formation in Newark of a branch of the Alumni Society. After transacting the business of the evening, and after enjoying a program by the Musical Clubs, the members adjourned to the Carnegie laboratory to eat and chat, to make new acquaintances and to renew old ones.

Senior Banquet.

Sophomore Dinner.

The Sophomores held their class dinner at Hotel Manhattan, Monday night, February 13. Almost every member was present and owing to the fact that the Freshmen knew nothing of either the time or place until about ten o'clock of that night, everything was gone through without a hitch. T o the committee, which consisted of Adams, Dienst, Duseobury, Hart, Mechalis, Norris, Slater, Spencer, Starzensld and Von Vittinghoff, (exofficio) is due the credit for the great success of the dinner. The tables were prettily decorated in green garlands and pink carnations and menus of red and grey at each plate, foretold the good things that were to follow in both the culinary art and after-dinner speaking. Adams acted as Toastmaster and with the customary well-worn stories introduced the following: H. Von Vittinghoff, "The Class"; A. M. Norris, "Athletics"; M. P. Spencer, Hints to Fussers"; B. J. Klein, "prexy and the Rest"; H. C. Dienst, ' Frenzied Finance.''

S . I. T. Alumni in Newark.

There are some seventy Stevens' Alumni in and round about Newark, N. J. As a result of a desire for a permanent organization expressed by some of these, Messrs. Hagar '02 and Condit '02, undertook to get the opinions of the men regarding thy,' formation of a club. Upon receipt of many favorable replies an organization dinner was decided upon and held at the Cafe de Jainne on February 12. Twenty-three were present representing various classes from '83 to '05. Numerous schemes were pray posed as to the character and objects of the proposed club. A' committee was appointed to examine the suggestions and report at the next meeting. This committee, consisting of Prof. Kroeh, Messrs. Fraentzel, Hagar, Condit and Johnson, met at the home. of Mr. Fraentzel and their report will suggest that at the meeti-J, ings some paper of engineering or other interest be presented bya member for discussion by all and that then refreshments b e served and everybody encouraged to have a good time in a social way. These meetings will probably be held monthly. I t was thought best to move slowly at first and broaden the scope of theclub's work as it gains in strength.

The second meeting will take place to-night at I,,Achtel Stetters, 842 Broad St., Newark, N, J. The Institute Glee Club.

At last the location for the new laboratory has been decidei.upon and the plans approved. Work should now progressh rapidly. The building will be a three-story brick structure about 1 fifty by one hundred-twenty, the same size as the Carnegie It will occupy the N. E. corner of Sixth and River Sts. runnin parallel to Sixth Street and having an entrance on River St.

The Junior Prom.

I t was a great night, the Seventeenth, and it was a great Prom. Without making invidious comparisons we will content ourselves with the simple statement that it was a Prom of which 0 6 can be proud. The ball-room was extremely handsome with its dress of greens and its red and gray drapery; with its festoons and clusters of soft golden lights.

And it was pleasant between dances to stroll through the ruddy glow in the corridors into the other rooms and listen to the gentle splashing of rushing water-the electric fountain rising and falling like showers of gems against the background of tropical plants, throughout which the tiny lights glimmered like many colored fire-flies and the luminous one with its stream of liquid fire.

Well were the cozy corners patronized, and who could wonder at it, after even a casual glance at the youth and beauty gliding through the graceful movements of the dance.

Of course the supper was as always, of the best; rendered none the less acceptable by the well chosen decorations in the supper-room.

Merrier was the laughter, livelier the dancing, sweeter the music, as the hours which seemed all too short, glided away; and the dim couriers of the day were mounting the eastern sky, when many a satisfied merrymaker was sinking into repose to dream of pleasure unalloyed and expectations thoroughly fulfilled.

Base-Ball. '

Base-ball matters are progressing very favorably, and in a extremely gratifying, to say the least, to the promoters and those concerned. ; Games have been arranged with strong teams, such as Franklin & Marshall, Trinity, Rennselaer, Brooklyn Poly., N. Y. University, C. C. N. Y . , Pratt, Forest Hill F. C., etc.

This schedule is not quite complete and negotiations are under way for games with Rittgers, Columbia 2d Team, Xavier, Seaton Hall, Webb Acad., etc.

All men who expect to try for the teams will kindly hand their names to Beckman, *06, as practice will be begun very shortly.

The Senior Clam held a meeting on Wednesday, January 11.

Fendrich and Potbury were appointed a committee to supply words for class-day songs. The following-men were appointed to the Senior Dinner Commniittee : Lydecker (Chairman) McKinlay, Stevens, Schaaf, Hausmann, Bedell, Charavay, Lewis, Lynd (ex-officio. ) At a recent class-meeting the Freshmen elected Roberts temporary lacrosse Captain. There was some talk of holding a Freshman Dinner.

DEAR SIR:-As the time grows less and graduation day seems nearer and nearer one is forced to ponder on the outcome of it all. I believe that the help which comes to the Seniors in the remaining short period of their stay must of necessity be largely general: There is one particular in this line which seems to me to be of some importance. We have not studied all the scientific books. Of course not, we never could ; but the time will come when we will be expected to solve problems which have not been touched upon in our course. Then the question, "Which book of reference is best? What book would the Faculty of Stevens suggest ?"

I should like to offer the opinion through the columns of STUTEthat a list of books selected and recommended by the Heads of Departments at Stevens would be very valuable to a graduating class. The list ought to include references to mechanical, civil, electrical and mining engineering subjects, and to any branches of applied or pure science which may be deemed valuable. Such a list might be "neostyled" for filing with other notes similarily arranged.

Prep. Notes.

An A. A. meeting was held February 10, in the Carnegie laboratory. It was not attended the way it should have been, only about fifty fellows being present. Fellows ! show a little more school spirit in athletics and come out to the next meeting.

tady and also the electrical installation at the car wheel foundry at Altoona. Mr. Waldeck made a plan sketch of this shop and explained its workings more in detail. Mr. Shapiro told the Society about the trip to the Baldwin locomotive Works at Philadelphia and cited several things in the manufacture there that agreed with the practice at Schenectady and Altoona.

Among other things Mr. Schaaf explained the system used in reproducing drawings for shop use. Mr. Fendrich concluded the meeting by telling about the manufacture of shredded wheat biscuit at Niagara.

The meeting was very interesting and those absent do not know what they missed.

Revival Meeting.

On March 7th in the Carnegie Lab. Hall the student body (J. C . Hegeman officiating) held a Spring Revival Meeting in the interests of Lacrosse.

Capt. Davis spoke of the winter practice, the need of more players in the squad, urged men out for the game and more especially appealed for heavier men.

Hegeman spoke on the plans for Target Practice (see article); while Bedell and Potbury expounded in good earnestness on the hope of the coming season along the line of coaching, team work, management, and cheering. Space does not permit of a more detailed account. The thing was a success and a beginning to a more successful Lacrosse season.

Basket-Ball.

On January 12, the Freshmen met and defeated the Sophomores in the first inter-class basket ball game. The game was very exciting, and was not decided until the last minute of the play, who was the victor.

I n the first half '07 started off with a rush, and it looked, as though they would run away with the Freshmen. The half was full of excitement, and at the end found '07 with 13 points and '08 with 10.

In the second half the play was furious. No sooner would one side score a basket than the other would even matters.

This continued until about two minutes before the end, when '08 managed to pull out a victory by the score of 23-18.
