The courses to be adopted at Rensselaer embody many of the es of our course here at Stevens. During the first two both the electrical and mechanical engineers pursue the studies, the specialization being started hi the junior year. course of mechanical engineering almost exactly parallels

are covered in our course by Prof. Ganz, but during the last year at Rensselaer, central stations, the problems of power transhission, electric railways, electric lighting, and the telephone and telegraph systems are carefully studied, while here-we have only time enough to touch lightly upon them.

A radical departure from anything here is the requisition oj a thesis during each summer vacation on some subject approved of by the faculty.

T h e projected Russell Sage Laboratory is to be constructed of Harvard brick with limestone trimmings and is to have a frontage of 244 feet. The building will consist of three parts, a central portion and two end wings. T h e central portion is to contain a modern lecture room with a capacity of 430. The west wing, which is about 100 ft. deep, is to contain the mechanical department, while the eabt wing, which is exactly similar, will contain the electrical department. T h e main engine will be placed in the sub-basement and is to be of the compound Corlisi type fitted with steam jackets, reheaters and condensers. Th sub-basement will contain all the other heavy machinery, including a large two-stage air compressor and a travelling crane for the handling of equipment. T h e upper floors will be divided into rooms for the different branches as follows : pump testing ; refrigerating machinery ; oils, gases and fuels ; thermometers, gauges and indicators ; fans and blowers ; insulation and radiation ; standards ; hoists and anemometer testing. This isolation of different branches into separate rooms is the common practice in the modern laboratories. e main generators for the electrical department are two ' 2 5 K. w. direct current, one driven by a con~poundsteam engine o this main power, motor-generators and rotary converters o be installed to utilize the city power. I t is planned that w on this building shall commence as early as practicable in

Lacrosse League Meeting.

The fourth annual meeting of the Intercollegiate Lacrosse League was held at the Park Avenue Hotel, New York, on Saturday afternoon, December 21. The following colleges were represented: Northern Division-Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Hobart; Southern Division-Johns Hopkins, Lehigh, Stevens Institute of Technology, Swatthmore, and the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, R. I,. Whitney, Cornell; secretary and treasurer, C. E. Maisters, Harvard.

I t was decided to give gold watch-fob medals to the members of the winning team in each division, in addition to the cups awarded the winning colleges. The three-year rule, debarring freshmen from university teams was considered, but was not adopted.

Cups were presented to Cornell and Johns Hopkins as the champions of the Northern and Southern leagues respectively.

Funds Apportionment.

On Wednesday, December 18, a joint meeting of the Faculty Advisory Board and the Executive Board of the Athletic Association was held to consider the distribution of the $240 obtained from the Alumni members of the Association. I t was first proposed that the money be kept as a foundation for a permanent fund, but as athletics are hampered by lack of money it was decided that it should be divided according to the provisions of the constitution.

The question of revising the constitution in regard to the ' apportionment of the money to the different teams was diccussed and it was finally decided that the Athletic Association be recommended to change the constitution so that each 'Varsity team receive 30% and tennis 2% leaving 8% in the general fund. Heretofore the lacrosse team received 40%, the football a"nd baseball teams each 25% and the general fund 10% ; tennis was not included at all.

Editorial.

T h e approaching examinations, together with a recent talk

by President Humphreys, lead us to refer dnce more to the socalled "Honor System. '' At the beginning of the present college year there was some comment on the action of the Honor Yale seniors (academic department) in rejecting Systemthis system for the conduct of examinations-but the papers reporting the act did not go far enough.

As is somewhat common practice, they gave out just enough to create a one-sided impression. What the Yale men really did was pass resolutions, as follows : First, That we place ourselves on record as standing for absolute honesty and gentlemanly conduct in class-room and in examinations. We believe that a simple honor system, based on the individual is ideal but in~practicablebecause of the size of the class and the lack of any provision for dealing with any offense that might arise.

Second. That we do not wish to undertake the responsibility of detecting, reporting or punishing dishonesty which may occur, because we believe that the student body, with no experience in such matters, is unable to perform such a duty to the best interests of the University.

Third.

That we believe that such supervision as is necessary to prevent dishonesty can be more conveniently and thoroughly performed by the faculty than by the student body or a student committee, inasmuch as it is to be supposed that the time of the students in the recitations and examinations is entirely occupied in doing the work thereof .''

Now, go "back and read again the opening sentence of their first paragraph. These words are the essence of the whole thing.

I t really matters not so much what instrument is used to attain an end so long as that end be reached in the best way. Here at Stevens the "old system" was not one in which the fellows stood together for honest work and a diploma honestly earned. The present "Honor System" is being given, in connection with examinations, a fair trial as the best means to the desired goal so far proposed. T o the present date it has worked well. Can we not now take in the other point covered by the Yale men and extend our code of honor" to include class-room work as well?

Why should we be honest a t one time and not at another?

Why support honest exams and countenance the "old way" for the rest of the year? Someone must take the initiative in this as in everything. What are your ideas on the subject? As has been said so often-think it over.

By referring to your file of THESTUTE for last year you will note that after the issue of January 11 no more copies appeared until March. I t is the intention of the present Board to issue THE;STUTEregularly right thru the year. This V ~ h n e can be done, however, only with the co-operation Four. of under-classmen to a greater extent than has heretofore been given. I t must be remembered that the seniors are away on thesis wprk and cannot be in such' close touch with Institute affairs as during regular terms. You men must respond to the call made earlier in the year that all items of news or general interest which come under your notice be turned over to the editors. Juniors, especially, who desire to try for positions on next year's Board will find this an opportunity to bring then~selvesand their work to the attention of those who make the appointments. The success of a twenty issue volume depends on you.

freshman Caps.

The entering class at Purdue is to inaugurate the custom of the Freshman cap. Commenting uponthis step, the Exponent says : No other class has ever shown a willingness to inaugurate this custom at Purdue, probably because they, as individuals, did not care to be marked as Freshmen, but some of the progressive members of the class of 1911 realize there is but one way to start the fashion, and that is to adopt it as a class and then hand it down to succeeding classes as a Freshman custom."

Dr. Coleman Sellers.

On Saturday evening, December 28, the distinguished tist, Dr. Coleman Sellers died in Philadelphia at the age of eighty-one years. Dr. Sellers was connected with Stevens during the years 1887 to 1894 as a non-resident member of the Faculty, occupying the chair of Engineering Practice. The honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering was conferred on him by the Institute in 1887. During his professorship he did much to improve the course, and his attainments in the field of engineering and science were many and great.

On the International Niagara Commission, of which the late Lord Kelvin was chairman, Dr. Sellers represented America.

H e acted as engineering head of the work, and it was upon his advice that the enterprise was undertaken. His great genius is shown by the success with which he devised the many engineering details connected with the project, for which there was neither precedent nor guide.

Dr. Sellers was a charter member and past president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers of Great Britain, the American Philosophical Society (founded by Benjamin Franklin), the Franklin Institute, and many other scientific and art societies.

Special Lectures.

Last Monday, President Humphreys delivered a lecture to the seniors on the " ~ a n u f a c t u r e and Distribution of Illuminating Gas. " Several of the other lectures that are to be given during the coming few weeks, will be on subjects of general interest to enpartial list follows, altho some changes gineering students. Faculty and Institute Notes.

Prof. Furman has made an experimental model of a device that reproduces handwriting. The device is operated by cams, and it is Prof. Furman's intention to use it as an illustration in class lectures, on the great variety of movements obtainable by means of properly designed cams.

On the evening of February 18, Dr. Pond will deliver at the Union Hill High School, an illustrated public lecture on the "Manufacture of Iron and Steel." This will probably cover a portion of the sophomore second term work, and a number of sophon~oresand freshmen have signified their intentions of attending.

The Carbondale Machine Co. has presented to the Department of Experimental Engineering a one-ton brine cooler to be used with the present refrigerating plant.

A carpentier Hospitalier Manograph was recently purchased. This machine is used for taking indicator cards from high speed gas engines by the aid of light sensitive photographic paper.

An Otto suction gas producer connected to a C. and C. 7% kilowatt generator will prove a valuable addition to the equipment of the Carnegie Laboratory. The expense for this plant is partly met by a donation from the Class of 1904. I t is expected that a producer test will be included in the intermediate term work of the juniors this year.

Library Notes.

T h e recorded attendance in the reading room in December, including Christmas week, was 1,608. T h e daily average was 69.9 and the largest number noted in one day was 160.

Contest Department.

THESTUTE Board spent several hours figuring out how it could find time to read copy on the anticipated deluge of articles for the prize contest, but to date one (I), only one, reply has been received to our last contest; so of course, it is not a contest at all. We congratulate the man who sent in the article and are tempted to award the prize to him, but, thinking that we may not have allowed sufficient time, we are going to extend the date of closing contest No. 3 to Monday, February 3. The first prize is ten dollars and the'second five. Articles may be on any subject; they may be on scientific, semi-scientific, or nonscientific subjects ; on truth, fiction or plain "hot air" , b u t they must be interesting.

CONTEST NO. 4.

We have appealed in every way, shape and manner, to the undergraduates for contributions of some sort, but scarcely any responses are forthcoming. At first we thought the trouble was with the students, but are beginning to believe that the trouble must be with ourselves and the paper. What is the trouble ?

We want some frank criticism of the paper. Not criticism of the destructive, but of the constructive type, Tell us how you could be improved. Tell us the worst-we think THESTUTE; want /rank criticism. The best suggestion gets a silver cartwheel.
