A temporary set of officers was appointed ; Chairman, Henry M. Mac Cracken, N. Y. V. ; Vice Chairman, Dr, H. J. Williams, University of Minnesota ; Secretary, S.S.McCormick, Western University of Penn. Also a committee on resolutions was chosen.

Resolutions offered by Capt. Pierce of West Point were read and after considerable discussion were adopted in the following form :-(1.1 T o communicate with the men of Vale, Princeton, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Cornell, Annapolis and Chicago who constitute the committee that has formerly governed football, and prop0~6'thatthe'tom&ittees be amalgamated into one which shall formulate rules under which football shall be played. -conference. (3.) That the seven members elected by this conference shall be guided in their action SO as to secure the following:-(a) An open game. (b) Elimination of rough and brutal playing. (c) Efficient enforcement of rules, making the rules definite and precise in all respects, such as the definition of brutal playing, holding, tripping and, in general, all infringement of the rules for which penalties are given. ( d ) Organization of a permanent body of officials.

The conference also recommended that the academic authorities of the colleges and universities hold themselves responsible for the general conduct of their athletics; that the actions of the conference be sent to all institutions actively engaged in the game for their ratification and shall not be binding unless so ratified; that the executive committee of the permanent conference look into the eligibility rules and report on the same and that all institutions are recommended to carefully examine the amateur standing of the men making up their teams.

The conference also adopted the resolutions that, whereas, the game of football as now played has certain abuses and serious faults not in accordance with true sportsmanship and which the institutions at this conference wish to correct, and as they can be best done so by the aid of the coaches and graduate committees, the conference is resolved, that it is dishonorable for any American collegiate institution, to offer inducements to players to enter said institutions either directly or indirectly, to single out promising preparatory school athletes and to influence them to enter a particular college, to play ineligible men, and that it is dishonorable for any deliberate effort to injure an opposing player including kneeing, kicking, striking with clinche dfists or slugging.

They also recommended that the head coach and coaches be held directly responsible for the conduct of players on the field and for any infringement of the rules.

These hoods are all piped to an exhauster down stairs in the ventilating room. On the same floor with the laboratory will be a combustion room# stock delivery room and a room for treating solutions with sulphuretted hydrogen. The weighing room, which will accommodate 40 students, will be on a mezzanine floor above the stockroom and sulphuretted hydrogen rooms. I t will be readily reached by a short flight of stairs directly from the laboratory, and will be screened from the laboratory entirely by glass. ' On the top floor of the building there will be a chemical lecture room with the necessary lecture table and apparatus.

This room will accommodate 198 students, and will be artifically ventilated. Immediately back of the lecture table there will be a room for preparing for lecture demonstrations. At the other end of the floor there will a classroom which will be capable of seating 98 students. Between the class and lecture rooms there will be located the Memorial Room. This room is to be fitted up as a memorial to Dr. Morton and Dr. Leeds, and will contain their libraries. Portraits and busts of Dr. Morton and Dr. heeds will be placed in this room, and other things pertaining to their memory. The memorial Room will, be u s 4 for the present as a faculty and board of trustees room.

Over the lecture room the roof will have a saw-tooth construction with windows facing the north, thereby providing the lecture rootn with diffused light from the north. * * * The interior walls (of the building) are to be laid u p of a gray-colortd brick, and the floors are to be mainly cement and asphalt. wooden floors being used only in the lecture, recitation and memorial rooms.' Ackermann, Id.E., of the firm of Ackermann & Partridge, the architects of the building, is a '91 man ; Richard Beyer, M. E., of McCann & Beyer, the surveyors, is an '88 man ; A. R. Whitney, Jr., M. E., of the firm bearing that name, the contractor for the building, graduated in '90. A. R. Wolf, M. E., '76 designed the general heating and ventilating scheme and supervised the; installation of same. T h e heating contractor is the N. Y. Steam Fitting Co., of which 33. P. Hall, M. E., '88 and R. E. Hall, M. E., '95 are treasurer and secretary respectively. T h e structural steel work was in the hands of the Post & Mecord CO., of which C. Post, 34.

The Smoker.

The date Monday, January 29, set for the Annual Smoker, while somewhat later than usual, is still appropriate and opportune. The seniors on that date will all be in town to attend the ' Special Lectures" while the three lower classes will have just finished their exams. So every one should be there and be there with both feet, with a sound throat and a good pair of lungs, and with a fixed determination to thoroughly enjoy a few hours sport.

This is the Seniors last Smoker, so every one of them will ' be on the job" to end up the four years' jollity in one grand old time.

There is no reason why every member of each of the other classes should not be present, especially after spending the ten previous days plugging for the exams. All, with the exception of the few " stung " ones, will then be free from care and will ache to give vent to their bottled-up spirits. T h e Smoker is the place to let it out.

Pipes, tobacco and the usual good things will be there, the Musical Clubs will entertain and we will hear from some of our outside friends as well. A man from '08 has volunteered to wrestle any man in '09, while another will box any man. '09 should not let this defi grow stale before it is taken up, but some man should be willing and eager to battle for his class and sustain its reputation.

Let every man make up his mind now to be there and then 30 not forget the time, Monday, January 29, at 8 P. M., or the place, Quartette Club Hall, Washington near 10th St. Mgr. 1

The Junior Prom.

The prom. Committee appointed Thursday, Jan. 4, consists M. P. Spencer, Chairman ; A. E. Mervine, Treasurer ; Denlarest, Minck , Helms, Lydecker, Hanmer , Williamson, Bavier, Ewer, Cowenhoven, Wright, Greene, Matzen and Willis ex-officio.

At a meeting of the committee held last Friday it was decided to hold the Prom. on Friday night, February 9th. The chairman has'appointed sub-committees to take charge of the music, cards, decorations and dinner, and the men are all determined to try and excel1 last year's Prom.

This seems nearly impossible, but as all the men on the committee realize how difficult it will be, success will probably crown their efforts.

Lacrosse.

3n Friday evening, December 22, a combined meeting of the Inter-university and the Inter-collegiate Lacrosse Leagues of the United States was held in the Park Avenue Hotel in New York. The main purpose of this meeting was to devise plans by which the game of Lacrosse might in the very near future rise to the same level in the estimation of the college man and the public as Baseball, Football, Track Athletics and Rowing have attained. Never could Lacrosse have a better opportunity for such recognition. The present football controversy has shown ' clearly that the public wants too see an open game. In other . words they want to see the ball and understand exactly what a man does when he gets the ball, There is no better game played than Lacrosse and no game that will give the public as much for its money, provided that it fc is played clean and is backed up by a substantial organization having a constitution which will not only govern the members of the organization but will govern the playing of individuals.

Such a constitution has been drawn tip and accepted by Cornell, Harvard, Columbia, Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, Lehigh, Swarthmore and Stevens. By this constitution the colleges and universities mentioned will, hereafter be known under the title of the "United States Inter-collegiate Lacrosse League." This league has been divided into two sections, a northern and a southern division. The northern division is composed of Cornell, Harvard, Columbia and Pennsylvania. Hobart will be admitted to this division in January 1907. The southern division consists of Johns Hopkins, Lehigh, Swathmore and Stevens. The University of Virginia will make an application and will be assigned to this division if admitted. The team winning in each division will be presented with a cup, and if they so

desire these two teams may play for the I-+eaguechampionship, but this game must be played on neutral groundsThe American Lacrosse Rules were adopted because all teams in the United States and Canada with the exception of Hopkins, SwarthmoreJ Lehigh and Stevens were tisin'g these rules.

There are a great number of questions that will come up could not be touched upon in an article like this. ' If any man in college desires to know more about the l e a g u e constitution or Playing Rules the captain or manager of the team will gladly give him whatever information they can.

The movement to organize a Y. M. C. A. at Stevens has at last taken definite form and seems to have every prospect of success. The only thing necessary to ensure this success is that every fellow give the subject carefur and earnest thought and do his share of the work.

The M u s i c a l Clubs.

The Stevens Club of Newark gave a smoker at I,. Achteletters' on Friday, December 8 at which the clubs went through eir usual programme. They were entertained afterward by the emark Club and the occasion proved a very successful affair, The members of the club have recently written to several U. enator3 to obtain the money paid by the Institute as a tax on Stevens endowment.

Several answers were read, all of h expressed the hope that the sum could be refunded in the

Employment Bureau.

ganized by the Stevens branchof the College Men's Y. M, C. There is an old saying that What is everybody's business nobody's business," and this seems to have been true in the st with respect to the finding of employment for students of evens. There are certainly many opportunities for students to rn money and there are, without doubt, many students whoire to do so. Quite a number have been accustomed to work oring the summer months and a still larger number would do so y had the opportunity. A few students who are working way through college, either in whole or part, want some during the school year. All desire jobs upon graduation. he purpose of this committee to aid students in securing poons and to this end the co-operation is asked of all nndergradtes, faculty and alumni. letters will be sent to a number of neerns throughout the country, informing them that such a mittee exists, so that if a t any time, temporary or permanent tions are offered, the students interested may be informed.

Similar lines of work are being successfully carried on at er colleges and good pecuniary returns are annually reaped students through the help of the employment bureaus.

of The Stute : DEAR s ~ ~ : - T h i sletter was provoked by the one in a recent on the Honor System and while it may seem issue of THESTUTE opposed to the sentiments there expressed, is intended rather to enlarge on the underlying idea of that letter. If the writer reads correctly, the end to be accomplished in the adoption of the proposed Honor System is the betterment of conditions at Stevens.

I ' Now the question at once arises do the students make the most of their present opportunities," and it is on this subject that this letter is based.

I t is pretty generally conceded that if an opportunity is presented and not grasped, it is forever lost. Therefore it is clear that we should be on the watch for chances to profit ourselves and seize them when they are offered. Consider this in reference to class-room work. No matter what estimate a student may make of a course or professor, he ought to try to profit by every lecture or recitation or at least refrain from disturbing another who does care to listen. Too often are fellows looking for flaws and then passing along the report of any error they detect. Professors and students alike are human and all love fun, but there is chance of error by all and also abundant opportunity for legitimate fun. If each one was trying to do his best, there would be such a mutual good feeling that there would be no desire of a change.

This idea may be carried into other lines. For instance, a lecture was recently given here on Rope Driving. Now this is a subject barely touched upon in the course, but at the same time To the Editor

one that every engineer should know about. In this case about one hundred and fifty men seized the opportunity and heard a really good lecture. The other two hundred and seventy either did not care or for one reason or another let it slip.

Another case is where the Seniors have the opportunity to hear the lectures of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and yet half the class is the most that has ever attended.

Likewise with inspection trips; those that can well afford the time and money, often miss them.

Of course, what seems an opportunity to one, may not to another, and there is where all must use their best judgment.

This exercise of judgment and discretion is one of the principal . elements of success and the more it is used the better it will be.

The Seniors especially should begin to practice in this line, because the time is near when they will be expected to decide important questions and they will be given but one chance. For other classes it is also important to get the most out of the course.

Let every Stevens man, therefore, start the new year with a firm determination to make the most of all opportunities and what will be accomplished by all pulling together will be surprising to those who have never tried it.

Prof. Wall has been absent during the first half of the past week, being confined to his home by illness.

The apparatus for the comparative test of pipe coverings has recently been changed and considerably improved.

Mr. E. P. Roberts, M. E., '77, is taking steps to the'formation of branch associations of the alumni - in'Ohio 'and Baltimore. ' Mr. J. A. Bensel, M. E . , of the class of '84 has been appointed Commissioner of Docks and Ferries of N. Y. City by May or McClellan.

Prof. Bristol is engaged in classifying the alumni according to occupation. The list will thus constitute a business directory of Stevens graduates.

Prof. Furman has decided upon a-new text-book, " ~ a c h i n e Design" by Smith and Marx, to be used in connection with the course in mechanical drawing.

The Forbes engine is running again after being shut down for a good many'weeks. Its broken shaft has been replaced by a new one and a new governor has also been put on.

The Weston Electrical Instrument Co. has presented the Dep't. of Electrical Engineering with 25 direct and alternating current instruments, besides a number of shunts and resistances.

A new set of apparatus for the Junior Lab. course consisting of a set of barrels and a water meter will be installed before the beginning of the Intermediate term. The same can be said of a new injector outfit.

The use of the forced draft apparatus recently installed ?I the boiler room constitutes an economical method for utilizing th>pea and dust coal. Cheer leader Caffrey wants them all handed to him in time to have them printed for the lacrosse games. We will have a la. crosse team this year worthy of the heartiest support. But they as well as the rest of us are apt to to become tired c d some of the old songs and yells. Let us all do our part in helping our team bring the championship once more to Stevens.

In the account of the Athletic Association meeting published in the last issue of THESTUTE, the report of Treasurer Murray, was given as the annual statement. This was an error; his report showed only the condition of the treasury up to the beginning of the present school year and was read so that the association would know exactly where it stood before considering the baseball question.
