The N e w Campus.

E F I N I T E plans have now been made for the disposition of the land recently acquired by the Institute from the Stevens estate. As shown by the outline on another page, the general scheme is to have the athletic field in the center of the plot, with the buildings belonging to or connected with the Institute surrounding the campus. At the southern end will be the Morton Laboratory and the proposed Electrical Laboratory. Sites have been chosen on the west, where it is planned to erect a students' hall, with dormitories on both sides. By reference to the figure, it will be seen that the side along Eighth street has been set aside to be utilized by the different fraternities. On the east will be the 200-foot grand stand.

T h e running track will be a quarter-mile in length, and on the eastern side will form part of the two hundred and twenty yard straight-away. Inside the track will be the football and lacrosse fields and a grass diamond for baseball. The whole plot is to be surrounded by an eight-foot iron fence, and there will be two entrances, one on Eighth street and the other at the end of River street.

President Sullivan, of the Amateur Athletic Union, has looked over the work so far accomplished, and has expressed his approval of the results. H e suggested that the track be modeled after the one now being built for the Jarnestown Exposition, which tho more expensive than the ordinary kind, would give better results.

The track will be about twenty feet wide, and will consist of cinders and clay. I n its construction there will first be layed a layer of coarse, steam cinders, five inches thick, then one of clay, one inch thick, and on top of this four inches of a mixture of finely screened cinders and clay, in the ratio of two to three. The edges will be built of yellow pine boards, held in place by threefoot posts, four feet apart. The whole track will have a slight inward slope of one inch in twenty feet. Next the pole, in the field, a four inch farm drain will carry off the surface water.

The proposed students' hall will contain a swimming pool and a gymnasium. There will also be locker rooms for the athletic teams and rooms for each class, where the men can congregate and hold meetings. The dormitories will have accomodations for about one hundred men.

Work on the field has been in progress more than a year, and the extensive grading is about finished. The cost to date has been $10,000, and will, when finished, foot up to about twice that sum.

Dr. Sharp's ~ e c t u r e .

Owing to sudden illness, Mr. John W. Lieb '80, who was scheduled as the first of the special lecturers to the seniors, was unable to fulfill his engagement. Dr. Clayton H. Sharp, head of the Electrical Testing Laboratories of New York City, was called upon at very short notice to talk upon Mr. Lieb's subject. cI The lecture given, New Developments in Electric Illumination, ' proved extremely interesting and instructive.

The speaker said, in introducing the subject, that he considered it fortunate for his listeners that they were about to begin their careers in a time of such improvement in the lighting industry. Dr. Sharp then took up the various kinds of incandescent lamps in chronological order as regards their invention.

The carbon filament lamp was the first spoken of, the characteristics being shown by charts. The metallized filament was next touched upon, and its advantages over its predecessor pointed out. The gradual improvements due to the introduction of metal filament lamps was discussed in all its stages, covering: the osmium, tantalum, and tungsten lamps. Comparison of efficiency, life, and other characteristics of the various filaments was shown graphically. Dr. Sharp also mentioned the most recent discovery in this field, that of the Helion filament, and the claims made for it.

Other methods of illumination, namely, the flaming arc, the mercury vapor lamp, and the Moore tube, were touched upon briefly, and their salient points noted.

Musical Clubs.

To-night the clubs go to Newark for the annual smoker of of the Stevens Club of that place. To-morrow, January 1 2 , in East Orange, is the date of one of the most important concerts of the season, and it is hardly necessary to say that it is the duty of every man to be on hand. Princeton and Columbia visit the Oranges every year, and have things all their own way; this year -our first-we get in ahead of both-and it's up to you to show them what Stevens can do. The concert is given under the auspices of the East Orange High School Alumni Association, in the new Ashland School, Park Avenue near Clinton Street. The auditorium seats a thousand, and will probably be filled. If every man does his part this time, we may add Orange to our list of "Annuals."

Philadelp,hia Alumni Organize.

At the suggestion of Mr. George J. Roberts and several other prominent Stevens men, the first annual dinner of the alumni of Stevens Institute living in Philadelphia and vicinity was held at the University Club of Philadelphia on March 3, 1906. There were present about twenty alumni, all of whom were so enthusiastic about the gathering that it was desired to form a permanent organization. However, the idea was not carried out at that time.

A second dinner took place at Philadelphia on December 15 with an attendance of twenty-two Stevens men. They were: A. C. Humphreys '81, J. C. Minton '84, A. Saunders Morris '84, I,. N. Lukens '85, J. Some fifteen others, who had previously signified their intention of attending, were unable to be present.

One of the very enjoyable features of this dinner was the bringing together of the older members of the alumni, many of whom had not seen each other since graduation. Dr. Humphreys' presence added much to the interest of the occasion, and his informal talk seemed to be thorly appreciated.

Every one present seemed very desirous of continuing the meetings. With this idea in view, officers were elected, as follows: President, Frederick W. Taylor '83; Secretary and Treasurer, G. R . Hemminger '98.

Stevens Club of Newark.

The Stevens Club of Newark will hold' a smoker at AchtelStetter's this evening. The Institute musical clubs will contribute to the evening's entertainment.

The Stevens Indicator for October appeared the latter part of December, surprising many of its readers by the unusual promptness of delivery.

S. P. Bush '84 contributes an article on "The Railway Field of Work for Stevens Men." This is followed by one entitled "Capital and Labor" by John B. Kreicher '96, which had previously been presented before the Engineering Society. H e goes into the controversies between labor unions and capital and cites several cases to illustrate his points. All told it is a paper well worth reading.

T H E STUTE 'Analysis of Alternating Current Waves" by I,. A. Hazeltine, a last year's graduate, is reproduced in part from his thesis, and introduces a novel method for treating different harmonics.

Smokeless Fuel for Cities," reprinted from Gassier's Magazine for August, 1906, is by C. G. Atwater '91. In this article he presents many interesting tables, showing the gas and coal consumption in different cities. He brings up the question of coke for fuel, and speaks of the by-product coke ovens.

Some letters are printed which were drawn forth by Dr. Jacobus' paper on Investigations and Commercial Tests in Connection with the Work of an Engineering College." There is also a complete index of the volumes I to XXIII, and a glance at the different titles shows the broad nature of this magazine in the engineering field.

I n t e r - C o l l e g i a t e Lacrosse Meeting'.

A meeting of the United States Inter-Collegiate Lacrosse League was held at the Park Avenue Hotel, New York, on Saturday, December 22. Delegates from all the colleges, with the exception of Columbia, were present.

Mr. Sands, of Harvard, presided until the election of new officers. The officers chosen for 1907 were: Dr. Wm. H .

Maddren, Johns Hopkins, President; Mr. E. W. Miller, Lehigh, Vice-president; Mr. Weeks, Hobart, Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. O'Flynn of the Crescent Athletic Club was chosen to fill Dr. Maddren's place on the ExecutiveBoard.

Hobart is now a member of the league and plays for the championship of the northern section.

Handsome silver cups were presented Cornell and Johns Hopkins for the championships of northern and southern sections, respectively.

One rule was added to the playing rules: Not more than three players from each side shall be within a circle, having the ball as the center and a radius of seven and a half yards, when the ball is faced off at beginning of game, and after each goal.

Section 16, Rule 9 was amended to read: Captains may change the players on their teams at any time during the game, but no new player may go on the field until the player, whose place he is taking, has left it, and has nofz'fied the referee. No player having once left the game may return to it.

The 1908 bowling club was organized December 7 , with fifteen charter members and the following officers : President, Knoblock : Secretary, Lemcke ; Treasurer, Leisenring. The club will use two alleys at Odd Fellows' Hall, on Wednesday afternoons. A team will be picked later to represent the class in match games.

1908 M e e t i n g s .

On Monday, December 17, the junior class was called together by its special committee on class differences, and accepted as a whole the report of the committee. Following are some of the salient points of the report :I1 ... .we are convinced that the present class officers wereI in fact elected by a majority vote.

We deprecate many of the contentions of the parties concerned in the present controversy ; in fact, we are disposed to condemn many of the acts and methods of both sides of the controversy.

We recommend that this committee be continued, charged with the duty of preparing for submission to the class a constitution and by-laws. .

As it is our hope that such constitution and bylaws may serve as a general model for the classes of the Institute, we are of the opinion that sufficient time should be given for the committee to prepare a constitution and forms of procedure which can secure general support thru their reasonableness. t I I n view of the circun~stances,we believe that the best interests of the class will be served by the present officers handing in their resignations. .

I We do not in this connection recommend that action be taken to oblige the officers to resign..

Should, however, the officers decide to remain in office in spite of the will of the majority, we recommend that the class loyally accept the situation and, as far as possible, support them in their administration. " President Humphreys, in a short communication, expressed himself as being "firmly of the opinion that the adoption of the recommendations contained in the committee's report will best serve the interests of the class." The President has also presented to the class a copy of Robert's "Rules of Order."

Following the acceptance of the above report, the former motion, requesting the officers to resign, was withdrawn from the records of the class. Vice-president Pritchard then requested Kirkman to take the chair, and the officers in order tendered their resignations. Each was accepted, and a motion carried that a vote of thanks be extended thru the Secretary. The entire Prom. Committee, appointed by Carpenter, next resigned.

That portion of the constitution pertaining to elections was read and the class proceeded to fill all vacancies. The new officers are : President, Kirkman ; Vice-president, Cobb ; Treasurer, A. E. Skinner ; Historian, Phelps ; Member of Link Board, Kirkman. The meeting then adjourned. &

The Intermediate Term.

The intermediate term begins this year on January 29 and extends thru three weeks, to February 18. A special schedule will be in effect for all four classes. The freshmen will divide the time equally between shop-work and drawing ; the sophomores will be engaged in laboratory work, as usual, in the physical and chemical departments ; the junior class will be occupied with the engineering laboratory ; while theses work and the inspection trips will engage the attention of the seniors. ' Many radical changes have been made in the Carnegie Laboratory tests as planned for the class of 1908. Students will be required to work on Saturdays, but each man is scheduled for but fifteen days of the eighteen working days constituting the term. T o more thoroly conform with practice, three tests, those of the two boilers and the refrigerating machine, will be run continuously, day and night. It will, therefore, be necessary to divide the twenty-four hour period into three shifts of eight hours each. The experiments of lesser importance will last two hours only. The tests to constitute the term's work are as follows: Test to determine the economy of a Babcock and Wilcox boiler equipped with superheater and using standard method of starting and stopping.

Test to determine the economy of a horizontal, return tubular boiler, using alternate method of starting and stopping.

Comparative test of a single cylinder, Corliss engine and a Buckeye single cylinder engine.

Test to determine the ice making capacity of an ammonia compressor ice machine.

Power test of a Forbes engine. Test to determine the power and economy of a rotary engine. Test to determine the power and economy of an Almond rotary engine. Test to determine the friction of a vertical steam engine.

Duty of a Blake direct-acting steam pump, of a centrifugal pump, of a rotary pump, of injectors.

Test to determine the power and fuel consumption of an Otto gas engine, of a Hartig gas engine, of a Mietz and Weiss kerosene oil engine, of a Rider-Ericcson hot air engine.

Roberts was elected captain of the varsity football team for next year. Knoblock was chosen as manager.

Editorial.

The prospectus of the recently-acquired property at Castle Point, as given elsewhere in this issue, is one that will gladden the heart of every loyal Stevens man. The Institute has labored so long under disadvantages in A Step Forward. things athletic that the well-appointed fiield, which is promised us within six months, should prove a big stimulus to those interests which lie outside the mental scope of the college.

I t ' is a matter of regret that means are not at the present time forthcoming for the erection of the proposed students' hall and dormitories. There is a need in this direction fully as pressing if not more so, than in the athletic line. As well equipped as Stevens is for the production of engineers, a draw-back is presented to the prospective candidate because of lack of facilities for the care of students outside of roster hours. And it is this same deficiency which is in a large measure responsible for the complaint, too often heard, of a lack of college spirit at the Institute.

With the splendid facilities afforded by the new field, there is a golden opportunity for Stevens to make more of track athletics. Field Day is an excellent thing as far as Track it goes, but beyond a few weeks in preparation for Prosthe event, little attention is given to track. "The pects. reason for neglect of this branch of sport in the past has been, no doubt, the inconvenience and unsuitableness of the Cricket Grounds. Now, we have nothing to complain of in this respect, and there is no reason why the Institute should notVassumea fitting position among the minor colleges. '

As an incentive to consistent work in track, would not a triangular meet between Stevens and two of her rivals, Rutgers and New York University, prove successful? The two lastnamed institutions compete each year in a dual meet, and there is no cause to doubt that Stevens would be welcomed in an enlarged event .

Matters in the junior class have finally reached a settlement in a manner that has proved satisfactory to all concerned in the controversy. The newly-elected officers have reOne ceived the promise of unanimous support in all their Result. undertakings, and feelings of bitterness have been layed aside to make room for a sense of co-operation, so necessary for the successful conduct of class affairs. Regrettable as the trouble h a s proved, it has not been without its lessons. I n the present instance, there has been clearly shown the futility of attempting to carry on the matters concerning a body of men without an effective set of rules for action and method of procedure. Recognizance of this fact has been taken in the recommendations of the adjusting committee, and definite action has followed along this line in the adoption by the class of a constitution and by-laws. I s not the warning sufficient to cause the other classes to take a similar action ?

THESTUTEdesires to extend a welcome to the latest acquisition to the list of alumni organizations-The Stevens Club of Philadelphia. Recognizing the mutual advantages Welcome! resulting from an association of fellow-graduates, Philatwenty-two Stevens men met at the University Club delpkia. on December 15, and formed a permanent organization. As a large number of those who have gone forth into the world from the Institute have taken up their residence in Philadelphia and vicinity, the new club should prove most successful.

The decision of the editorial board of The Link of 1906 as to the disposition of the profit on last year's annual is one that will meet with unqualified approval.

We doubt that the money could have been put to a more useful and appropriate purpose.

At a meeting of the senior class, on December 12, approval was given to the recommendation of the Link Board that the balance to the credit of the 1906 annual be used to purchase a gift for the Institute. The Board has finally decided on a mahogany director's table for the Memorial ~ o o m of the Morton laboratory.

President Humphreys has purchased the Zrin Farm and several adjacent tracts of land at Morristown, N.J. It is his intention to eventually convert this property into a modem country estate.

D. K . Dickiuson, a member of the class of '75, has presented the library with all the numbers of The Eccentric bound in oue volume. The Eccentric was the first annual publication of the undergraduates of Stevens.

The basketball team journeyed to West Point on Saturday to meet the fast cadet team. I n consideration of the fact that the team had but one day of practice in preparation, and that the game was played under intercollegiate rules, where the condition of the player is so large a factor, the result was not altogether unexpected. Prep Notes.

The lacrosse prospects are unusually bright this year. At the present time there are forty-two candidates, some of whom showed wonderful progress during the fall practice. During this fall practice the fellows have learned many of the essentials of the game, so that almost all of next spring can be given over to team work, a thing that was unknown to last year's team. Altho there were not many men left over from last year, the new material seems to be fully capable of filling the vacant places. We expect to be able to use the steamship piers for practice the latter

t of the winter, which will give us a big advantage over all other teams in our class. Among the schools with which games will probably be arranged are: Columbia Freshmen, C. C. N . Y . Prep. ,' Boys High School of Brooklyn, and Poly Prep. of Brooklyn. None of these will be easy games. Last year we were beaten by all of these schools with the exception of C. C. N. Y. Prep., and it is only by hard work this year that we can do better. Boys High is ranked among the best prep. schools in the country, and to win a game from them would be a feather of size in our hats.

I n the baseball line we have the best material right uow that anyone could wish. We have the best kind of a coach to bring out what is in the material, and we have the spirit to back up the whole thing. This year our baseball schedule will include th some of the best schools in New York. They play all at Commerce. Everyone knows what Boys High n do, and Erasmus Hall, too. We will have to play of these teams. Among the other games Poly Prep, Newark Academy, Moutclair d De La Salle, Besides these there are six nged league games with Newark, East Orange, and air High Schools.
