N Saturday, November 23, Stevens was forced once again to assume the role of second best to Rutgers. I t was the best game that the 'Varsity played this season and 'without a doubt Stevens played a better game than Rutgers in the second half. Our team used the forward pass and onside kick frequently; Myers, in the latter play, repeatedly made long gains.

Rutgers seldom used anything but straight football and, except in the first half, they were unable to make much distance by this method. - Our proverbial "hard luck" is never so pronounced as when we play Rutgers and our last game proved no exception.

After easily carrying the ball down the field and on the 10-yd. line, we had to lose the ball on a forward pass! The game was exciting thruout and it had a fitting climax; with but 44 seconds to play, Roberts tried for a field goal and just failed to tie the score by about 6 inches. Much credit is due to Fisher the Rutgers captain, for kicking, from the 45-yd. line, the field goal that won the game.

Stevens was well supported a t the game; about 200 students went down with the team to do their share of the cheering and in this respect we were just as prominent as Rutgers. A white duck dressed in Stevens colors afforded amusement for the grand stand by its antics. This animal was the mascot of the team and was purchased by Tyson particularly for the occasion. The idea is good, the Institute should keep a duck thruout the year on the new field as the official mascot.

The game started at 3:15 with the kick-off by Rutgers. The ball went over the goal line and Roberts punted out from the 25-yd. line. ~ u t ~ e made i s persistent gains thru the Stevens line by straight plunges but on the 10-yd. line the 'Varsity held for downs and gained the ball. Ridgway fumbled on the next play and Rutg-ers tried a forward pass but Fonda fell on the . .

Utz received the kick-off but Roberts returned by punting+ Rutgers made first down twice but was then held and Stevens got the ball. Fonda went thru the line for a 10-yd. gain and Ridgway added 5 more. Ridgway was played again an&he made a clever gain of 20 yards. Rutgers gained the ball oh a forward pass and then punted. Ridgway fumbled the punt but Roberts recovered it and ran it back 25 yards. After several plays Roberts punted to Rutgers and when time was up (he ball was still in their possession in the center of the field.

Roberts opened the second half by making a short kick-off which Myers recovered on the 45-yd. line. Myers again made a clever recovery and netted 25 yards on an onside kick from Ridgway. Ruigers fell on a forward pass and punted the ball back into our territory. Stevens was unable to make any gain and finally punted and Bruce made a fine tackle in the center of the field. Rutgers punted to Fonda. Ridgway made a 5 yard gain and Utz made first down. A forward pass by Ridgway to Myers gained 10 yards, but in trying to repeat the trick the ball was lost. After an exchange of punts Rutgers tried to score another field goal but failed. Roberts kicked out to the Rutgers 40-yd. line and after three plays they were forced to put$, Myers made a fine recovery of an onside kick and repeated the trick in the next play.

This brought the ball near the Rutg?rs 6 goal, and as usual, Stevens luck" intervened and we lost the ball on a fumble. Rutgers punted back into Stevens territey.

Utz made 5 yards thru line and Bruce made 15 yards more by a forward pass. Van Syckle recovered an onside kick; this' brought the ball within striking distance of the goal and with only 44 sec. to play Roberts tried a kick from placement but failed to tie the score. the better would be difficult, even tho the sophomores did make a touchdown. I n the first half neither side were able to score but the ball was near both goal lines a number of times.

I n the second half Bruce obtained the ball and ran almost the entire length of the field for a touchdown. Sturgis kicked the goal making the score, Sophonlores 6-Freshmen 0.

Thruout the game Skinner played a very excellent game; he was the most effective man on the sophomore team. Myers and Mann played star games for the freshmen. ,

No Fish Story.

Recently at a dinner Prof. Ganz related an amusing experience. Last winter, while at Niagara Falls on the inspection trip, the professor agreed to meet the seniors at a specified time at the factory where shredded wheat is manufactured. Contrary to his usual punctuality, he arrived late and during his absence the fellows had ampletime to concoct some mischief. Doubtless everyone knows that Albert Westinghouse Edison Ganz" is a favorite popular alias for the professor; so one of the fellows thought it a pretty good stunt to sign this name in the register at the works. Then each student signed his own name, writing Ganz after it; so that one not acquainted with the hoax would be led to conclude that a Mormon with his tribe had come to visit.

Prof. Ganz soon arrived, and enjoyed the joke as much as anyone when he found what had happened. I t was but an incident in the trip and was soon forgotten.

Not long ago a big bundle of mail from Niagara Falls arrived at the Institute.

The first letter was addressed to Mr. A . Westinghouse Edison Ganz, next to Mr. So-and-so Ganz, etc., etc. Twentyfive or thirty different Ganzs received letters that day. Of course Prof. Ganz forwarded the mail to the proper parties, and it is a safe bet that there were twenty-five or thirty pretty broad grins about that time.

A first prize of ten dollars will be given to the subscriber ;ending in the best article, before January 6 , 1908 ; and a second prize of five dollars will be given for the second best article.

Articles must be on subjects that will interest our students, and preferably, though not necessarily, technical in nature. By way of suggestion, perhaps the work you did this summer, or the work your father or uncle is now doing, or some work that is going on at your home town, may be a good topic. But we don't want a shag" from some magazine. Possibly a tale of adven ture might fill the bill.

The article should be less than fifteen hundred words, altho there is no objection to sketches or photographs, as well. The English will be a secondary consideration, and the Board will revise the article if necessary. The main thing is the subject matter. If a subject interests you as a student, it will interest other students. P u t it in words even if you don't think it will fetfh the prize. Nothing risked, nothing gained. Pres. Butler of Columbia has given his official sanction to inter-class football.

Lacrosse is being revived a t Syracuse. Annapolis and West Point are also going to have teams.

Editorial.

With much satisfaction we learn that the Class of 1911 has finally succeeded in electing a full quota of officers, in accordance with its duly adopted constitution ; we trust it miy never again be put in the ridiculous position its first farcical 1911. election placed it.

I t seems to be natural in most colleges for freshmen to be more or less indifferent as regards their class affairs; and in this apathy is found fertile soil for the seeds of later class dissensions.

When the class meetings are poorly attended? when only a small minority care whether school keeps or not< then it is, that a cliquq forms and tries to run things;" this has been the oft-repeated experience of the past at Stexens, When this state of affairs once obtains, the class finally wakes UP and tries to throw off the yoke. Next a "scrap" is likely t ensue, and the class and the clique are at odds for a long whik sometimes till long after graduation, The class is liable to blame the clique, whereas it is itself to blame for not managing it affairs properly in the first place, After a somewhat stormy career, 1908 realized that the called politics of Stevens needed regulatingl so it devised th present constitution, which was framed primarily to preserve I good fellowship between the students by giving a square deal'' to all.

Now that football is over and the long winter is ahead of us, the topic which Mr. Hedden brings to our attention in his letter, printed elsewhere in this number, is in good season. W e are very confident that Mr. Hedden's views are Debating concurred in by several other members of the faculty, society. which fact is proven by the attempt made last year to interest the juniors in debating.

Altho that first attempt was not very encouraging, the fact ren~ainsthat we, as comin~,professionalmen, need that power, which most of us lack, of thinking on our feet." As Mr. Hedden clearly sl~ows,this power is to be gained only by practice ; and the best practice is gained in the debating society.

Altho in this crowded course of ours time is precious, still that time devoted to self-betternlent is the most precious of all.

For debates to succeed here, the topics must be of intense interest, of burning interest. If some of the students should succeed in orgauizing a debating society at Stevens, they certainly should be counted among its benefactors.

To t h Editor tf Th&Skate : DEAR SIR:-In considering the ultra-classroom activities at Stevens in comparison with those most generally supported in other colleges of our rank and standing, I fin4 that Stevens compares favorably both in the number and in the support of such activities, including those of a general nature, which are appropriate for all colleges, and those of special nature, applicable particularly to a distinctly technical school such as Stevens.

But in the former, general class there is one activity which is, so far, entirely lacking at Stevens, and one whicrh I think a little consideration will show to be of not merely equal, but greater advantage to S t e v e ~ nlen ~ s than to many other classes by whom its importance is recognized.

And it is this that I wish to bring to the attention of the STUTE, and leave for consideration Student Body through THEC and discussion. I refer to a college deb$ing society.

An old and accepted adage says that Knowledge is Power! " In my opinion, however, knowledge is merely botmfiaZ power; and just as potential power, as represented by the boiler full of steam, or the reservoir full of water, is absolutely worthless without the appliances and facilities for transforming it into kinetic and useful work by means of intermediate Zit~ks~ z mechazism, d SO the potential power, represented by a normal mind well filled with valuable knowledge, is absoIutely worthless without the abil~ty, on the part of its possessor, to turn it into active useful work, by means qf intermediate Zida a d m e c h a n i s ~comfiosed ~ qf other human minds.

Or, in other, and simpler words, no knowledge is powam,cu unless it can be used to direct others in the a ~ c o r n ~ l i s & pg ~ useful work. , The next question is one of efficiency. Efficiency, as to mechanics, needs no explanation to Stevens men. ~~t eak ciency, as applied to the transmission of education and knOwlA edge, depends almost entirely On two prime factors, namely& facility in speaking and writing. 1 know of no other methodg of transmission.

Zfficiency in speaking also depends on two prime c' < completeness" and Conciseness. " A verbal e ~ p l a n ~ description or argument, if incomp1ete in its statements or facts mentioned, is inefficient to the extent that it needs addjtiQnal ' statements, which oftentimes become confusing and toryr to make it complete; or the most important fact of all may be left out entirely. Also where time is money,'' brevity and concise wording of an explanation or argument is absolutely necessary for successful competition. And what is true of speaking is equally true of writing.

Now to an Bngineer, who is continually called I I ~ Oto~ explain technical theories and questions; to describe intricate mechanisms, and to sustain arguments on engineering subjects, the ability to concentrate his inind, in the presence of other listeners and express in clear, complete and concise language the^ ideas which he has in mind, in such a way as to make his hearers understand clearly the $ o k f of his argument and the Jogical truth of his statements, is bound to give him, at many tlmes, a a big advantage over his competitor who may be his superior in technical ability but lacks the ability to transfer his $otmtid knowledge to others in such a way that they may grasp it and make it useful.

Ability in this line may only be obtained, as in any otber, by practice. As far as I know, the only practice of any consem tive and valuable nature, which Stevens men get at Stevens, is in connection with the Department of znglish and Logic, and I should consider it as one of the most valuable features of the work of that department, But 1 do not think that this practice should be limihd' entirely to the Curricnlum and the Roster. And I do believe that the practice obtained in a live debate of any subject of real general interest, either local or otherwise, and $u~fimZa~bf the practice in extemporaneous speaking obtained in the rebuttal debates, is invaluable in aiding in the eficient use of our knowledge as power.

While I consider the practice in intelligible expression of ideas the most important and valuable result of a good deb~tbg society, there are some other features which are much too imPQrtant to be omitted. The entertainment afforded to the li~tWT@, when a subject of local and mutual interest is being arguedm-@& benefit to both speakers and listeners of learning somethinga

matter which would otherwise have been passed over or neglected; the familiarity with some of the fundamental principles of ''parliamentary rule" which are introduced into the operation of such a society, and which every man, looking for executive positions should know something about; and the spirit of good-natured competition and rivalry which always enters into any form of Competition and which is both stimulating and entertaining.

I have had an opportunity of seeing the results of debating club work in a number of cases, and from experience, both prsonal and otherwise, I would most heartily commend to the Student Body the serious consideration of the feasibility of organizing a debating society here at Stevens.

I should be glad to hear the matter discussed either personally or editorially in THESTUTE. Yours very truly, C. E. HEDDEN.

Faculty and Institute Notes.

Prof. Ganz expects to take the Senior Class to-morrow to the Waterside Station of the New York Edison Co. A special bulletin board is being made, to contain the class, A. A., and Link constitutions, and the Honor System rules, etc.

Prof. Kroeh has been ill for the past two weeks, but is expected back next Monday. H e just escaped an attack of typhoid fever.

The sophomores are using a new book by Prof. Gunther, entitled "Integration by Trigonometric and Imaginary Substitution," with an introduction by Prof. J. Burkitt Webb. The book , treats-fully the 'triangle method" of solution.

More apparatus has been received by the Physics Department from Max Kohl. A half horse-power shunt wound motor has also been purchased for lecture purposes.

Pres. Humphreys and Dr. Frederick W. Taylor, '83, have been appointed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, as members of a Joint Committee to co-operate with representatives of other National Engineering Societies, in the examination of all branches of engineering education.

A faculty committee has been appointed to report on the advisability of making certain changes in the roster, with a view, not of extending the course, but of devoting more time to the Present studies. The changes contemplated are running classes Saturday mornings from 9 to 12, Wednesdays from 9 to 1, with no sessions on Wednesday afternoons.

Lane '08, attended the Tau Beta Pi Convention at Purdue University, Lafayette, Ind., November 29th and 30th.

Russell Spencer. o n November 17 1907, Russell Spencer of the Class of 1908 passed away after an illness of over a month. He was taken ill on the thirteenth of October with what was thought to be malaria but which later developed into typhoid fever. H e .was removed to the home of Mr. E. H . A. Correa in Hoboken a week later, and seemed to improve, when a relapse set in the day before his death. The funeral services were held at his home in Carbondale, Pa. Russell Spencer was born in Carbondale December 6, 1885, and was brought up there. He entered the senior class in the Stevens School,and came into the Institute with the class of 1908. His brother Mallory P. Spencer graduated with the class of 1907. The Delta Tau Delta Fraternity of which Russell Spencer was a member have suffered a great loss in his death. H e was ever prominent in class and Institute affairs, and took a keen interest in athletics. He started his athletic career in the Prep. School where he played on both the lacrosse and football teams. He played football and lacrosse on the Class Teams and lacrosse on the 'Varsity. Russell Spencer'sgenial personality and enthusiasm for college affairs will be greatly missed by all those who knew him, and especially his classmates.

East Orange played Newark on Thanksgiving Day and resulted in a score of 4 to 0 in favor of East Orange.. The ball was kicked from the 40-yd. line deciding the victory. This gives East Orange the championship.

On the day of the Rutgers game, Dr. Pond took 64 members of the Sophomore Class on their first inspection trip, to the Valentine brick works, at Woodbridge, N. J. The trip was one of great interest, and the cordial reception at the works, as well as the "treat" afterwards, was greatly aPpredated. tt Dr. Pond and most of the fellows boarded the Rutgers Special" and joined the crowd at the game.
