On Saturday, November 9, the 'Varsity met with defeat at Hutford. The defeat, while depressing, was not as bad a s was expected; Trinity has one of the strongest minor, college teams ttiis year. The game was well played and without any of the disagreeable occurrences that have marked our previous games with Trinity. The 'Varsity was defeated mainly by our oppoi fint's skill in the use of the forward pass; repeatedly long gaitia were made by the use of this play. I n straight football Stevens held their own and if Trinity did not possess a player whose abilii to pass the ball was so pronounced, the score would have beel different-in our favor perhaps. Trinity chose the south goa with the wind advantage. Stevens kicked-off to Trinity, but tlii ball was returned. This exchange was repeated, Ridgway receiving the ball. Trinity recovered the ball on a fumble on their 12-yd. 1ine;and punted to Myers. After being penalized on forward pass Roberts punted to the Trinity 25-yd. line. Trinity made a 46-yd. gain on a forward pass and after three trials the; forced the ball over the line. The kick for goal was unsuccessful Score 5 to 0 in favor of Trinity. The second touchdown followed soon after in almost the same manner; Trinity worked the forward pass again to good effect and kicked the goal. Score,Trim 11-Stevens 0. .

Myers received the next kick-off but Roberts returned tho kick. Trinity advanced the ball to our 20 yd. line when l?ond fell on the ball for Stevens. Ridgway recovered an onside kit and gained 10 yds. but Roberts was forced to kick. The forwap pass was again used by Trinity and the third touchdown was scored. The goal was kicked making the score Trinity 17Stevens 0.

Roberts opened the second half with the kick-off. Mnh~enberg rushed the ball back about 40 yds. by line plays but were then forced to punt. Hendrick made a brilliant run of 40 yds, and Stevens made several more gains before they were forced to punt to Muhlenberg. As in the first half, fumbling marked most of our plays and Muhlenberg scored again. This time the goal was kicked, making the score 16 to 5.

Muhlenberg kicked-off to Sheldon who made a fine run of 40 yds. Stevens fumbled and Muhlenberg returned the ball by punting. Roberts returned the kick and Muhlenberg rushed the ball down the field by straight line plays for the fourth touchdown. The kick for goal failed. Final score: Stevens 5Muhlenberg 21. On Thursday, November 14, Sec. A and Sec. B contesieu for the football championship of the Senior Class. Only those who had never played on the 'Varsity or scrub were eligible and consequently it proved a rather amusing struggle. Sec. A was victorious. The sturdy players under Capt. Hamilton easily outclassed their opponents both in weight and skill. Sec. B was , not as well trained and they lacked a good quarterback; 00 nearly every play the 200-lb. center of the Sec. A team broke thru the line and intimidated the small Sec. B quarterback so that he could not pass the ball.

The game was played at< -a terrific pace ; in spite of a week'' hard training the men were all in" after every play, and each down saw at least two men on their backs undergoing various forms of resuscitation.

In the first half, Sec. A scored only one touchdown ; arknkotter broke away and scored. Hamilton tried for the goal and even if the kick did not score he can console himself with the fact that it was a most remarkable performance. made several long end runs and finally Erlenkotter broke away again and scored. With just a few seconds of play left ' ' ~ u ~ ~ h ' , Klein went over for the third touchdown, making the score 16 to 0 in favor of Sec. A.

The N e w Rule Book.

The book of information for students came out a few days ago and, after a careful perusal of it, we are still in doubt as to whether we suffering mortals are or are not better off this year. The class room work is given more importance by making it count forhalf of the term average instead of one third as formerly. A cut" is hereafter a serious matter because it deducts 3% from the final term average instead of 5% from the term mark. The book says Excuses must be presented to the Registrar before nine o'clock or immediately after twelve o'clock of any day on which college is in session." A most unjust rule !

Why not let the students get their excuses just before the afternoon session. The best time to tackle a man on a n important matter like that is always after he has had his dinner. Page 10 states that suspension is liable to be the penalty for a violation of the rules in regard to smoking.

Freshmen and sophomores can note with a deep sigh of relief that the special examination in mathematics, which used to be such a bug-bear to us, is dead and buried. T o be sure we seldom had the special exam., still it always appeared in the book and was a source of anxiety to many.

Freshmen are now not only expected to put up a dollar for THESTUTEbut must also pay one dollar for every first re-examination in any subject. Of course other re-examinations are five iI bones" as ever. Cost of living is going up, and it is well to educate 'em young. l ( Under Promotion" the book states, No student can pass from a lower to a higher class, unless he is entirely free from conditions". This statement is not by any means new, but it means something this year, judging from the number of vacations handed out gratis early in the .term.

GOOD PLAN FOR TO-MORROW. Prior to a football game with Depauw, the entire student body of ISarlham College gathered on the campus to offer UP prayers for the triumph of their team, and wound up with the college yell.

Editorial.

On Monday of this week the Class of 1911 held a meeting for the election of permanent officers. Early in the year the freshmen had decided to adopt tlie class constitution prepared last year and published in No. 12, Vol. 111,of THE Why ?

STUTE,yet when the report of this election was handed to us it contained the names of but two officers : a president, and a secretary-treasurer. Article I, Section I. reads : "The class officers shall be a President, a VicePresident, a Secretary, a Treasurer and a Class Historian." On bringing the matter to the attention of the freshmen it was found that the constitution adopted had not even been seen!

Effort has been made to pnt the "politics" of Stevens on a solid foundation, yet the facts here stated would hardly seem to bf along this line. There have'been troubles in the past and 191 would do well to profit by the experience of others. Every fresh man should make himself acquainted with the constitution ; droi in the STUTE office and spend five minutes reading it.

Then take sufficient interest in your class affairs to atten( meetings and give your vote on the right side of every question Don't be afraid to stand by your convictions.

From now on we shall cease talking Call. about finances. Commencing with issue Number 7, it is the intention of the Business Manager to confine the circulation to those alone who are bona fide subscribers and to those who may wish-to purchase single copies. These are on sale in the STUTBoffice every day at the regular price of ten cents each. This is positively the last call.

Several persons have surreptitiously placed in the care of the Business Manager, a slip of paper bearing a name of the feminine persuasion, a distant address and, carefully pinned to it, a one dollar bill. These have formed the nucleus Ladies' of our "ladies' subscription list". It is a good List. idea, and we want to ' p u s h it along*'. Faculty and Institute Notes.

The Department of Physics has just received from Ernecke, of Berlin, several pieces of lecture-room apparatus for demonstrating the principles of mechanics, sound and electricity. The equipment of vacuum tubes is now complete, several tubes for the production and study of X rays and cathode discharges in vacuo having been recently purchased from Mueller Uri, a German maker.

Electric lights are being installed in the Physics laboratory so that in future, late afternoon work will not be attended with so many difficulties.

Professors Prescott and Smith, of the Biological Department, and the Electrical Engineering Department respectively, of M I. T.,were recent visitors to the Institute.

Rev. Ethelbert 33. Warfield, President of Lafayette, was a recent visitor to Stevens.

Dr. Edward Weston has presented to the Institute a set of the Proceedings of the Physico Technical Reicbsanstalt, from Volume I to date, which gives the reports of the work of this lnstltution, where so much valuable' scientific work has been done. .

The Senior Class, with Prof. Ganz, visited t h e Fourteem Street power plant of the Public Service Corporation last Man and. Tuesday. Special interest was taken in the operation of synchronizing the alternators.

Prof. Jacobus departed with his fanlily rather unexp-&gy for Los Angeles, CaI., to conduct a ninety day test of a plaint. recently installed by the Babcock and Wilcox Co. This will probably be the most complete plant test ever conducted.

As Arithmetic is one of the subjects omitted from the list of the Entrance Examination Board, President Humphreys is urging the Board to include the subject, in order that applicants may not be obliged to take this examination at the Institute.

President Humphreys has been chosen a member of the An diting Committee of the Entrance Examination Board.

A new supplement to Pres. Humplhreys' "Lecture Notes' contains a table entitled ' ~ e s u l of t company operating its own sinking fund and thus having to put up principal and interest".

A course of lectures on scientific and economic subjects is being held at Columbia University, which will continue until next April. The lectures, which take place Wednesday after noons at 4.10 P. M., are on a great variety of subjects, popularly treated. A few of the series have already been given, and havt been attended by several of the instructors from the Institute. ,

We notice by the new directory on the bulletin boards tha the titles of the class-rooms have been changed, the new plar being to designate each room by the subject that is taught in it and not by the name of the professor who makes use of it, at formerly. This seems like a good logical classification. The location of the room is given after the name. If this directory remains on the bulletin board next September, it will prove a greal boon to 1912 men, who would otherwise be scurrying around fol the first few weeks, trying to find out where 'they belonged, as ii always the case with the entering class.

Chess Club.

A meeting of the Chess Club was held on the 13fh, at which three new members were admitted. Dues are now 50 cents Pel year, payable in advance. The first round of the tournament resulted as follows : Butler defeated Beck ; Freygang defeated Fortman ; Fletcher defeated Harlow ; Hoexter defeated Handloser ; Ingfee defeated Jappe ; Landesmann defeated Klotz; Lud* wig defeated Lane ; Stieglitz defeated Schuldner ; Stranahan defeated Ward' ; Whyte defeated Watts ; Wood defeated Upson ; Skinner defeated Blanchet ; Schroeder defeated Stover.

Mr. Russell Spencer, of the Class of 1908, died at the home of his friend, Mr. Correa, in Hoboken on Sunday evening, November .17, after a prolonged illness. A more complete account will be given in our next issue.

Prep Notes.

STEVENS PREP. 21-BETTS ACADEMY 0.

The team went u p to Betts Nov. 9, and whitewashed their opponents in fine style. I n the first half 16 points were made and in the second 5, making a total of 21 points. Several field goals were attempted by the Betts team but none proved to be dangerous. Practice has continued all week and the men are in a better condition than they were last Saturday.

On Saturday, November 15 the Monclair High team came over and exhibited such fine football that the Stevens Prep. was held to a tie score. Several times there was every indication of a touchdown by the preps but they failed each time to place the ball over the line.

In one part of the play Montclair rushed the oval to withina few feet of our goal line, but was held for downs and forced back.

The Stevens aggregation outweighed the boys from Montclair and everything seemed favorable for their winning the game. but their opponents put up a n ~ u c hstronger defence than was expected. The line-up: Callahan, right end; rut hers, right tackle; Fennel, right guard; Ryan, centre; Trin~pe, left guard; Hane, left tackle; Pettibone, left end; Ackerman, right halfback; Schultze, fullback; Cooke, left halfback; time of halves 25 and 20 minutes.

Don't give up hope; there is still a chance to win the pennant.

The East Orange-Montclair game was disputed and another game appeared to be the only solution.

It was reported that the East Orange team had lost their suits. It's "hard luck" East Orange.
