Season.

HE football season of 1906 is now a matter of history. WEIS

it successful? Did the game of football advance at Stevens during the past year? The first question must be answered in the negative. T h e team did not accomplish its avowed purpose. Rutgers was not beaten in the final game. The other question can truthfully be answered in the affirmative. A great advance was made along the line of games scheduled. This year's schedule contained games with such representative colleges, as Trinity, Johns Hopkins, New York University and Rensselaer-colleges of well-established reputation in the minor division. The game with Princeton must be viewed in a different light. Here we deliberately stepped out of our class to play a game which would add greatly to the prestige of Stevens, even though defeated. I n scheduling this game the management showed good judgmect because, although defeated, the team made a showing which compared more than favorably with the showing made by Villa Nova, Lehigh, and Dartmouth.

Of course, the most important game was the last one with Rutgers. That game meant the finishing touch to a well planned development of the team. In this game the condition of the field was a large factor in Stevens' defeat; for it gave the heavy Rutgers team a decided advantage. Again it may be said this year, as in last, that the season would have been a splendid one could the old time rivals have been defeated. The story of that game is still fresh in the minds of the undergraduates.

The game next in importance was that with N. Y. U . * Although the opponents were weak this year, one has but to visit University Heights to be impressed with the position the New Yorkers always will hold in the athletic world. For this reason it was with satisfaction that another victory was recorded.

new system of coaching, and showed the effects thereof by winning gi hard earned victory.

The Rensselaer game was played in Hoboken again this year. This team has been victorious over Stevens every time the teams have met, since 1892. This year, R. P. I. came down confident of repeating the process. After a hard, well-played game, victory rested upon the Stevens banners, thru a well-earned goal from placement .

This was the last important victory, as the game with C. C. N. Y. was merely a practice game. What is considered by the management as the worst defeat, was the one received at the hands of Trinity. No excuses can be made for the miserable playing of the team in this game, and all that can be said is, that the team seemed to have suffered a very severe slump-a complaint which is common in all colleges.

Of the first Rutg-ers game and the Johns Hopkins game little can be said, altho Stevens had much the better of the argument in the latter contest. Both games were no-score games.

O n the whole, the season may be considered a successsful one, on account of the prestige gained. The games were given more space in the newspapers than ever before, a gratifying fact to every loyal Stevens man.

Omitting the game with Princeton,' we scored as many points as our opponents, the total being: Steveus 37, opponents 36.

The prospects for next year are indeed exceedingly bright, since only two men will be lost by graduation. The captain and manager have already been chosen, and deserve the support of the entire student body in their efforts to arrange a good schedule.

The scrub this year showed excellent spirit. It would have been impossible to have won any of the important games had it not been for the scrub practice. 1908 Seeking Adjustment.

An adjourned meeting of the junior class was called to order

by Vice-president Pritchard, on Monday afternoon, November 26, in the Carnegie Laboratory. The reading of the minutes was dispensed with, and President Humphreys was given the floor.

The substance of his remarks was that since his two-hour conference with the class on the previous Friday, he had looked into the matter of the recent election carefully and was prepared to make a first suggestion as to the solution of the difficulty; this suggestion being that a committee of five men-Kirkman, Hernandez, Phelps, Sturken and Pritchard-be appointed by the class to confer with him. I t is hoped that this committee can agree on some plan acceptable to all, resulting in a union of the two present factions.

President Humphreys desires to make whatever remedy is offered a permanent safeguard against future misunderstandings, and to this end advised that thoroness rather than haste in the settlement be first considered. H e also suggested that possibly the two upper classes might unite in forming a constitution which could be handed down from year to year to each entering freshman class. The meeting adjourned until such time as the committee above named should be ready to report.

As a result of the controversy, Carpenter, the class president, and Sedgwick have withdrawn permanently from the Institute.

Sophomores Win at Football.

One of the most exciting and closely contested interclass football games in a number of years was played at the Cricket Grounds on November 27, between the freshman and sophomore teams. Previous to the game, 1909 appeared to have the best chance of winning, as five 'Varsity players were in the line-up.

The second year men had as well, the advantage in weight. T h e freshmen, by steady defence work, kept the final result in doubt until the latter part of the second half, when a field goal by Fonda and a fifty yard run by Skinner, offset the touchdown obtained by them in the first half. There was a large crowd on hand to witness the game, and the cheering by the two under classes was very enthusiastic. The last few minutes of the game were played in darkness, which made it most trying for both officials and players.

Henderson '10 kicked off to the sophomores on the twelve yard line at 4 o'clock. Gaining three yards on the first play, Fonda punted to the freshmen thirty yard line. The freshmen were held for three plays, but made first down, as the sophomores were penalized for off-side play. After gains of three and five yards, 1910 tried a forward pass, but the ball was fumbled, and White fell on it for a touchdown. Sturgis failed to kick the goal.

Fonda kicked off to Hill on the twenty-three yard line, and the ball was run back five yards. Henderson hit the line for two yardsand threemore were added to this. Sturgis' kick was blocked, and the sophomores obtained the ball. Hearsey was then put thru for a short gain, but on the next play, a fumble resulted, and the ball changed hands. Held twice for no gain, Sturgis punted to Sjostrom. Skinner and Hendricks made first down. Blanchard and Skinner brought the ball forward nine yards more when it was fumbled, but Fonda recovered it. Hearsey went thru for eight yards, but the sophomores again fumbled on the next play, and it was the freshmen's ball. Thrown back for a loss, Sturgis punted to Blanchard, who made two yards. The sophomores lost the ball on downs, but Sturgis brought the ball back twentyfive yards. Held for a small gain, Fonda tried a drop kick, which was blocked, Haynes falling on the ball. Sturgis again punted to Skinner, and in three plays, 1909 made first down.

Blanchard was put thru for two yards, when time was called.

Fonda kicked off to Jones, and the ball was the freshmen's on the twenty-three yard line. The ball was blocked when Sturgis tried a kick, but he managed to recover it. H e punted again to Sjostrom, who fumbled, and the ball again came into the possession of 1910. Sturgis was again forced to kick as they could not make the required distance. Fonda punted in return, and on the first play, Henderson made three yards. Buttfield secured three more, but failing to make the required ten yards,

THE STUTE the ball was lost to the sophomores on downs. Fonda puntea, and on a fumble, the ball fell again into the hands of a 1909 man.

Skinner then went thru for eleven yards, and five more yards were gained in two plays. A short kick was tried and Hearsey received the ball. Skinner made seven yards, but 1909 was thrown back, for a loss. Here Fonda made a very pretty drop kick from the thirty-two yard line, which gave the sophomores their first score.

Henderson kicked off to Hearsey, who lost the ball on a fumble. 1910 made two small gains, and then kicked to Sjostrom, who advanced the pigskin five yards. Fonda punted to Hill, who claimed a free kick, but as the distance to the goal was too far, Sturgis punted to Mayer, who fumbled and lost the ball.

The freshmen lost it at once on a defective forward pass, and then Fonda kicked to Henderson. 1910 was held for no gain, and Sturgis kicked to Skinner, who made twenty yards. Fonda again punted to Henderson, who fumbled the ball. H. E. Skinner, picking it up, made a sensational run of fifty yards foi a touchdown. Fonda failed at the goal.

Sturgis kicked off, and Fonda returned the ball on a punt.

Hill, in the darkness, got thru for twenty-five yards, but on the following play, the ball was fumbled and the sophomores obtained it. Hendricks made five yards, when time was called. Final score-1909, 9; 1910, 5.

On Saturday, Nov. 24, under the guidance of Prof. Ganz, a large part of the senior class gained some practical knowledge of power house equipment and operation. The stations visited were the Edison Waterside No. 1at 39th St. and the East River, the adjoining uncompleted Waterside No. 2, and the 59th St. station of the Interborough Co. Waterside No. 1, the oldest of the plants visited, is equipped with 13 3000 K. W 6,600 volt engine type generators, and 3 5,000 K. W. 6,600 volt turbo generators. The south half of the building is used for generating current, the north half containing the coal bunkers and boilers, the latter, it being curious to note, are hand fired. The west side of the building is used for control apparatus, both for the immediate plant, and all the substations, at which places the 6,600 alternating current is changed to 110 volt direct current. The oil switches of the high tension circuits are located in a dry, well insulated gallery, and actuated from a low voltage switchboard on an upper floor, where the substation control apparatus is also located. An interesting'feature here is a miniature plan of the bus-bars and feeders, which shows the exact load condition of the entire system. The unfinished plant, No. 2, has a notably smaller generating room altho the output of the plant is designed to be about twice that of No. 1.

The 59th St. power house is built on the same general plan, but the relative noiselessness of the machinery was striking. The 9 5500 IS,W. 6,600 volt generators are directly connected tocompound Corliss engines, with a horizontal and vertical cylinder on each side. These generators were so liberally designed that it was claimed they could be run on an overload of 3000 K . W. without damage. I n contrast to the Edison station the 60 boilers, originally hand fed, are being supplied with automatic stokers.

During the last two weeks, events have transpired which strengthen our belief in the advisability of the adoption of such a plan for the election of class officers as previously Another outlined in these colun~ns. The most lamentable Point. condition of affairs in the junior class is the natural outcome of a loose and haphazard plan of balloting.

Had a reliable method been employed for the selection of officers, such questions as later arose would have received little consideration.

The class in question, that of 1908, is not, however, a sole offender in regard to the lack of system in the conduction of class affairs. Only one of the four classes a t present in attendance at the Institute has had the foresight to draw n p a constitution.

Even that of the present seniors, adopted in the freshman year, is practically obsolete.

A fixed method of procedure is essential, or else opportunity is given for just such trouble as has recehtly arisen among the third year men. This should be sufficient warning to the undergraduates to conduct their affairs in a more business-like manner.

The formation of parties and political" organizations, if parried to extremes, will seriously impair the effectiveness of the Institute training. The conception of a large body Class of men working in perfect harmony is, to say the Ethics. least, impractical. There must always be a certain amount of rivalry and competition or else we would soon degenerate into a body of puppets, following the leadership of a few strong-minded men. The harm comes when a leader sacrifices the common welfare for the gratification of personal am-

bition or spite. T o such a man must be given a word of caution: Be careful in the use to which is put the power arising from influence over and command of weaker intellects.

To-night is the occasion of the smoker, and all to whom this kind of affair appeals should make an effort to be present, as an enjoyable time is promised by those in charge.

The While this annual event i s far from being in Smoker. intent a solemn and dignified occasion, at least a fair amount of order is expected, and, in courtesy to the performers who have offered their services in the entertainment line, attention should be given their efforts.

The word of the managers of the affair has been given that no harm will be done to property, and every man present should consider himself bound by this pledge. Last year, considerable injury was caused by a few thoughtless ones, and a subsequent bill for damages fell equally upon the guilty and those not deserving. Let the thinking be done beforehand this year, and remember that the misconduct of a few makes a far deeper impression than the creditable actions of a large majority.

DEAR SIR:- Never start anything you can't finish3' may be a very good maxim, but some tasks are too big- to finish in the time allotted. Such was the establishment of the honor system at Stevens. Naught-six started, but did not finish the task.

They proved it to be a success in their own class, and got naught-seven sufficiently interested to give it a trial. They did not succeed, however, in persuading the two lower classes to partake of the benefits of the honor system. Few men from that school would stoop to a2ie. But how many would refrain from cheating in an examination? Ah, that's a different matter. Not one, I believe. I t was the proper thing

to do. The greater the audacity one exhibited, the greater was the applause earned from one's admiring class-mates. T h e professors suspected (if they didn't expect) you to cheat. That helped those who thought their consciences needed white-washing.

When we entered the Institute we carried with us that sentiment about cheating ; moreover, we met many kindred souls.

One or two of the faculty w e r e of the same brand as we had learned to know in the prep" school. But with some other members of that body it was very evident that their school-boy days were so long past that they attempted to measure our morals with the same scale that is applied to the morals of gentlemen the world over. This made an impression on a few, a very few of us. But it didn't substantially improve matters.

Cheating flourished as much as ever. Then the crash came.

President Humphreys had made known to us his opinions on the subject at hand ; opinions which were somewhat opposed to ours. But we didn't take him seriously (a mistake recurring with decreasing frequency in subsequent , Two members of our class were caught red-handed. One asked for, and the other gave aid in an examination. They were no worse than the average of the class; they merely yielded to something that was considered criminal only when you were caught at it. T h e remarkable fact about the whole case was that when the final judgment was pronounced, and the rather heavy penalty dealt out, the sympathy for the offenders was not as great as might have been expected under the prevailing circumstances. The benefit we derived from t$e affair was that cheating became less frequent. Many of us lacked the nerve to continue a practice that might have very inconvenient results. Surely, not an ideal motive to act correctly ; but it accomplished something. During our sophomore year things went along peacefully, no opinions on the subject were voiced, and everybody did as his conscience bade him. But the ground was being prepared, nevertheless.

When naught-six started the agitation last year, naught-seven, after a short controversy, mostly on technical points, accepted the honor system on trial, and has this year established i t permanently.

You other three classes, why not follow the lead of the seniors ? Why not also establish the honor system ? There are only benefits to be derived from such an action. Not material benefits, it is true; nor immediate ones either. But isn't it worth while to force the faculty, one and all of them, to treat you like gentlemen ? Isn't it worth while to do something which will tend to develop an esprit de corps approaching that prevailing among army men? Isn't it just one step from the honor system, the self-government in examinations, to the self-government in all matters concerning the student-body and not pertaining strictly to the curriculum? Won't you feel the prouder of your diploma for having gained it blamelessly ? Surely, these ques.. lnly have an affirmative answer,

Some lay the claim that examinations are occasionally unfair, and hence justify unfair means in trying to pass them. A weak sort of an argument, at the best: But, really, are examinations ? Don't the professors usually try to sound the men ever unfair t after an exam," and isn't thei'r scale of marks usually influenced by the opinions of those interviewed ? I t seems to the writer that the men who raise the cry of unfairness are those who aren't prepared in the subject. Being unprepared isn't dishonorable in itself, as long as there is no cowardly evasion of the consequences, Be unprepared, if you will ; you only risk future failure in your profession ; but be careful to keep your honor beyond suspicion. Take your punishment unflinchingly, like a man, and you have learnt a more valuable lesson than if you had mastered all the intricacies of the Calculus.

Under the honor system the faculty leaves the responsibility for straight dealing to the student body-to the class. T h e class puts you upon your honor. If you fail to live up to your oath, your offense is not against the professor (your natural 'enemy") but against your class-mates. That eliminates the 'prep" school excuse. Under this system, you are not forced to remain in your seat. You may leave i t to catch a breath of fresh air, to relieve the tension of your ruffled nerves. You, Mr. T. I. Easy, may even enjoy the tremendous privilege of borrowing an eraser; you may even walk o v e r t o your friend, Mr. Well Prepared, to get it; you are at liberty to glance over his paper, no one is watching you! Why don't you do it ? Simply because your class-mates expect you NOT to do it! And that's esprit de corps. Some there are among us who have never been tempted to cheat, but they are the exception, no credit to them that they didn't. But most of us have, be it by fear of "flunking," be it by a burning desire to show off at home with brilliant marks; or maybe we have been tempted to aid a classmate in obvious distress. Fear, ambition, charity are powerful factors in the human make-up, and it's surely pardonable to feel mildly elated at having conquered them for the sake of honor. Isn't it worth while to experience this elation?

Men of Stevens, give the honor system a chance. Show the other colleges that at our Alma Mater, science and ethics gohand in hand. Show them that we are a body, not compelled by faculty rules, not watched over by proctors, but gentlemen, obeying a code of honor of our own creation.

Jaeger has been chosen manager and Jackson, captain of the freshman bowling team.

The sophon~orebasketball team was defeated by the C . C. N. Y. freshman on Saturday, November 31, by a score of 72 to 2.

At the last regular meeting of the freshman class, Messinger was elected historian and West chosen as manager of the class lacrosse team.

The basketball game with Gordon House, scheduled for Saturday, November 24, was called off on account of the fact that the Stevens team was not registered with the A. A. U. President Willis, of the senior class, has appointed the following men to serve as the senior dinner committee: Demarest, Brown, Campbell, Lum, Phelps, H. E. Meeker, J. A. Meeker and Duhart.

A number of seniors attended a meeting of the A. I. E. E. at the Edison Auditorium on Friday, November 23. A brief inspection of the sub-station located at 27th Street was made a t the same time.

Members of the sophomore class interested in bowling met on Thursday, November 15, and organized a bowling club. R. Smith was elected president, Butler, secretary, and Schoch, treasurer. A team has been chosen and has already bowled one match with the freshmen. Stuart is captain and Draudt is manager of the team.

Professors Furman and Hedden took a second party from the junior class on Saturday, November 24th, to New York to inspect the works of the Garvin Machine Co. About twenty men spent two hours in viewing the different machines at work.

Gear wheels of all descriptions were being cut and the sight of the operation did much to clear up obscure points. On the top floor was seen a paper bag machine, which turns out three hundred bags a minute. Unfortunately, it was not in operation during the visit. On the ground floor a hydroplane speed launch was beingconstructed. The trip was very interesting and instructive, and came as a fitting climax to the study of Kinematics.

Baseball Schedule The baseball schedule of last season caused some criticism as to the standard of teams played. The fact that the manager was unable to do any work at all on the schedule until the middle of November was a great handicap. I t was a case fo take any,thing which could be had, with no choice whatsoever. Under the circumstances, it was a very creditable schedule.

This season, an early start was possible, and as a result, Stevens will meet many of the best college teams in this section of the country.

The prospects for an excellent team are bright, and it is up to the student body to support the team, not only by cheering but also financially. Surprise was expressed at the deficit in last season's account. This is explained by the small gate receipts -$16.48.

To carry out the schedule for 1907, this item must be increased to at least $150.00.

The schedule as arranged to date follows : APRIL 6-Open.

Prep Notes.

At a meeting of the football team on Tuesday, Schultze was elected captain for next year.

The awards of "S. S." were made to those who played in 60% of all scheduled games, as follows: Leonhard, Ackerman, Hane, Wellbrock, Webster, Ryan, Bostwick, Cruthers, Sandmeyer, Sheldon, Schultze, Cooke.

The cross-country run of the New Jersey Interscholastic League was held on Wednesday, November 28. I t was with great difficulty that we managed to get together a team, the credit for which, by the way, is due to Murray, the track captain. To put it very mildly, it is thought that a scarcity of representatives of the Prep to act as judges and timers, rather than the inability of the runners, was the cause of defeat. Newark won, East Orange was second and Stevens, third and last.

Well, the football season is over, and a pretty successful one it has been, too. There were but ten points scored against us: five at the High School of Commerce game, which we lost, and five at Hackensack, which number was well offset by our total of seventeen. When we look back at some previous seasons and see the figures against Stevens Prep we are not ashamed of this year's showing. T h e following is a record of the games played: S. S. 6, Passaic H.
