Cane Sprees, Tie-up and Tug-of-war.

EDNESDAY, October 30, proved a shccessful day for the Class of 1910. The sophomores won two canes out of three and a victory in the tie-up, thus establishing their

n~berscould not be brought into play. No decision was given the tug-of-war. Both the seniors and juniors took sides and prevented a fair contest and no decision could be given after such interference, altho the rope was finally drawn into the territory of the seniors and sophon~ores. This butting in" is inexcusable ; the contest was arranged between 1910 and 1911,not between the two upper classes.

The grand parade started from the Institute at two o'clock and after marching around the buildings, proceeded down Hudson to Fifth, up Washington Street to Tenth and from there down Hudson Street to the Eighth Street entrance of the Castle Point Field. With the seniors in the lead, the other classes following in order, and with two bands, Stevens startled the quiet town of Hoboken with a rather imposing procession.

The seniors laid aside their dignity for the day to dress in fancy costumes and to indulge in what will be their last foolish pranks, (collectively, tho not, perhaps, individually ). The frolic was amusing to everybody, and a football game at the end of the day's doings afforded much fun for both spectators and participants. The seniors are to be commended for the way in which they turned out for the frolic, every man-except a few who had legitimate excuses-appeared on the field in some grotesque costume.

AS soon as the procession reached the field, the four classes arranged themselves on the sides of the square that had been roped in for the cane sprees, and as usual there was an exchange of courtesies in form of class yells. The lightweight spree was started without delay, Wood representing the sophomores and Keuffel the freshmen. As soon as the bout started, the cane was brought to the ground and an interesting struggle followed. I t

that Keuffel was the stronger man, but he played a defensive game and after 2 min. 40 see. Wood pulled the cane free by clever work.

The middleweight contest was between Meigs '10, and ' Myers '11, and it turned out to be a spirited bout.

The result was always uncertain. I n the first round neither man had gain( d any advantage, but soon after the second round had started, Myers succeeded in getting the cane for the Freshman Class, The sophon~oreswere determined to carry off the third cane, so they sent in Heller, last year's cane man, to contest with ' Brewer for the precious stick.

Brewer had the advantage of weight and as soon as time was called, he started an aggressive fight, a fight that made the heavyweight bout the most interesting of the three. They thrashed around in the air for a while but finally the cane was brought to the ground. Heller played on Brewer's strength by letting him do most of the work and after two minutes and forty seconds of constant struggle, Heller wrenched the cane away from his opponent, giving the sophomores two canes out of three.

The next event was the tug-of-war, twenty of the heaviest men from each of the two lower classes essayed to draw the heavy manila rope into their territory. This proceeding seemed to be too slow for the upper classmen, so they took sides, presumably to help matters, but only succeeded in spoiling the contest so that neither side could claim a victory.

Contrary to the usual result, the sophomores won the tie-up by a score of 40 to 26. This fight was rather slow ; the freshmen did not seem to know what to do, and consequently the sophomores, who were somewhat experienced, had things their own way.

TO-day they have a fiendish institution at the South chicago plant called the twenty-four hour shift, Bightpen hundred men in that plant work for twenty-four hours without stopping1 on every alternate Sunday. They begin on Sunday morning and work ihrough without a pause till Monday morning at seven o7c1o&. I n order to keep awake, sonle of the men cultivate a keen intellectual interest in the mechanical processes about them.

hour shift on his own account when he was sculling ladles (which means cleaning the slag out of them) but, even after being promoted from that menial employment, he has worked seventy-two hours at a stretch without sleeping, and has worked one hundred and sixty-eight hours without any other kind of sleep than that which can be gathered from a hard chair in a dark corner. ' What is the use of talking to a man like that about the severity of a twenty-four hour shift? When two sheets in the steam-pipe in the pun~p-roomof the rail-mill were blown out and three men and a boy were killed, Field worked fromsunday evening to Wednesday evening without ever closing his eyes. And then he spent the rest of Wednesday evening a t the opera. And

when the rail-nil1 at Joliet was frozen up by a cold winter, Field stayed in the mill a whole week, with a chair for a bed, and kept that mill from complete stagnation at the cost of seven nights' sleep and also at the cost, in all probability, of three or four yearsI <of his life.

On one occasion Field was knocked twenty feet by a Stray crowbar and experienced some difficulty in recovering. On another occasion the top of his hat was shaved neatly off by a hot rail which just missed shaving off his scalp. On still another occasion he walked off a dock into the Calumet River and was pulled out just in time, r''I admire such a man. There is no man I adniire niore.

Football.

STEVENS 6-ORANGE Y . M. C. A. 0 The game with N. Y. Law School which was scheduled for Saturday 'Oct. 26, was cancelled and the 'Varsity played the Orange Y. M. C. A. instead. T h e game proved more difficult than was expected and the victory was gained only after a hard struggle.

During the entire first half our o p p o n e ~ ~ tseemed s to have the best of the game; the ball was near our goal line a nuniber of times but the 'Varsity held splendidly when i t came to pushing the ball over for a score. Our line was very weak when the play was in the center of the field; Orange easily broke thru for long gains, but when the ball approached onr goal line the team always recovered and held for dowi~s. The team should cutivate that "do or die" spirit and keep it thruout the entire game, not only at critical moments.

The game started at 3.30; Roberts kicked off to Orange. A forward pass netted our opponents 20 yards and the recovery of a short punt brought the ball well into Stevens territory. Y. hf.

C. A. resorted to line plunges and were easily making their distances until Ridgway fell on a fun~bledball, Roberts tried a punt but the ball was blocked and Orange carried it to the 10 yard line. Stevens took a brace and held for downs, thus gainingthe ball. The ball was punted out, but was soon carried back to our goal line where, as before, the 'Varsity gained it on downs.

Stevens punted and Y. M. C. A, tried a forward pass which cost them a 15 yard penalty. A punt t o Ridgway put the ball in our possession and Ridgway carried it back 25 yards. Time of the half was up, neither side scored.

In the second half Stevens played with more aggression. y.

M.C. A. kicked off to Fonda who cleverly passed the ball to Ridgway, Ridgway dodged thru the field for a 25 yard gain.

Roberts punted but thk ball was returned. Roberts punted again but this time Hearsey recovered the ball. Punts were exchanged again and a fine forward pass from Fonda to O'Connor gained 15 The 'Varsity carried the ball by si~ccessiveline plays to within 2% yards of the goal line, but lost it on the third down by fumbling. Y. M. C. A. punted, but Roberts brought the ball back 20 yards on a quarterback run. A try for a field goal failed and Orange kicked off from the 25 yard lineI Fonda carried the ball back ten yards. Steven started to hit up things, and go down the field by rushing the line, but the ball was lost on a forward pass just when a touchdown seemed to be a surety.

Sheldon fumbled and the ball rolled over the line where Tyson fell on it for a touchdown, Roberts kicked the goal.

Roberts kicked off to Orange but the ball was returned immediately. A forward pass from Ponda to O'Connor carried the ball 15 yards down the field. Stevens tried an onside kick but Y. M. C. A. fell on the ball. Time was called just as Fonda was running back the next punt. Final score, Stevens 6-Y. M. c. A. 0.

STEVGNS 11-RENSSELAER 9.

I n spite of the rain and poor condition of the field, tile %Varsityplayed Rensselaer Saturday, November 2, and defeated them by a score of 11 to 9. Thruout the entire game the result was uncertain, first one team would have the advantage and then the other. Both teams played excellent football, but the nlell fronl Troy were in poor condition and the speed of our 'Varsity told against them. The play that won the game for Stevens a very unusual one. Roberts tried a delayed quarterback rlln around left and when tackled he passed the ball to Utz who made a dash for a touchdown before anyone knew what had happened.

R.P. I , opened the game by kicking off to Myers. Stevens punted but Rensselaer returned. The 'Varsity started with a fine forward pass from Ridgway to Myers that gained 35 yards, A misutlderstanding on a fake kick for a field goal gave FOE& a poor pass, but he passed the ball to Roberts who punted and the play was saved by clever head work. This punt brought the ball on the R. P, I. 10 yard line. Rensselaer punted out but the ball was soon returned, A forward pass from Rid Myers was fumbled but Hearsey fell on it n~akinga gain of 25 yards. A quarterback run brought the ball within striking distance and Roberts tried for a field goal but failed to score, Myers received the kickout and Ridgway 011 a cross tackle play carried the ball from the center of the field to the 1.5 yard line.

Myers scored for Stevens on a forward pass and Roberts kicked the goal making the score 6 to 0 , Stevens kicked off to R. P. I. but recovered the ball on the next play. Foi~dablocked a forward pass, Myers picked it up and made 10 yards. Utz recovered an onside kick. R . P. I. gained the ball on a forward pass but lost it on downs. Roberts punted to R. P. I. and after failing to gain, a field goal vias successfully tried making the score 6 to 4.

Roberts, kicked off but R. P . I. returned by a punt. Stevens lost the ball on a fumble, an R. P. I. man broke away for long gain and was tackled by Utz. They tried a field goal again but failed to reach the line with the ball. Ridgway carried it out 10 yards. Ridgway got the ball again and by fine dodging made a 40 yard run. Time called for the first half with the score Stevens 6-R. P. I. 4, R. P. I. received the kick-off and they rushed our liue for gaiiis until within distance for a place-kick but Fonda blocked the attempt. Punts were exchanged, R,P. I. tried an end run.

The man eluded our defence and made a brilliant 40 yard run to our 5 yard line. An end rush gained a touchdown for R. p, 1. but the try for goal was n~issed. Score R. P. I, 9-Steve11S (3, Stevens kicked off, but the ball was returned. Myers recovered an onside kick and Roberts started on a delayed quarterback run, but passed the ball to Utz who scored. Roberts failed to kick the goal.

Ridgway a dash and reached the 2 yard line but R. P. I. held US and Roberts was forced to fall back and try for a field goal but was unsuccessful. No student should make any arrangements for Saturday, Nov, 23 ! On that day he is expected to go to New Brunswick to see the Rutgers-Stevens football game and should arrange his affairs accordingly. The Rutgers team has been playing good football, and the 'Varsity will need the encouragement of the grand stand if they are to win this game.

To the older men this notice is perhaps unnecessary; the memory of the splendid time everybody had last year when we went to the college on the " ~ a n k sof the Raritan," has already determined them, This notice is particularly for the freshmen, and two weeks time seems sufficient to make arrangements. The fare is nominal and in comparison to the fun obtained and the good done by cheering it is surely negligible. Notice of the cost, the time of departure etc., will be given in the next issue of THS STUTEwhich will come out the day before the game.

Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute has succeeded in raising a million dollars for new buildings, and is now trying to secure an additional fund of the same amount for maintenance.

The greatest trouble with the old organization (A. A . ) was that although every student was supposed to be a member, only a few really took an active part in the meetings. The result was that sometimes matters were not thoroughly handled and that managers were elect:? at packed meetings.

For the management of athletics at the Institute of Technology the old athletic association, which has been in control about eight years, is to be superseded by a representative body of students, five members from each class. T11is new organization will assume many of the duties of the advisory board also, and will elect managers of'all 'Varsity teams.

That the new plan will be pnt into operation there is no doubt. The five men from each class will be selected at the coming class elections."

Faculty and Institute Notes.

President Fred Mr. Atkinson of the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, in con1pany with Professors Sheldon and Spofford of the same institution visited Stevens, October 31.

During his recent visit to Washington, Prof. Ganz spent two afternoons studying the equipment of the Bureau of Standards.

This laboratory has one of the best and most complete electrical equipments for test and research work.

During the past two weeks ~ F e s .Humphreys has devoted his regular hour to giving a talk to t11e Senior Class on the subject of Wall Street and finance in general. As the subject is of such general public interest just now, the President's remarks were listened to with great interest by the seniors and a few of the faculty who were also present.

Prof. Ganz is working to determine the physical and chemical differences between the results of alternating and direct current electrolysis of lead cable covering, with a view to deciding whether the corrosion of some six thousand feet of lead covering on a cable was due to the direct current of a railroad or the alternating current from a11 electric light plant.

Dr. Denton was retained as expert by the Bethlehem Steel CO. to witness tests on high speed cutting steels. The steels ln question were originated and patented by two Stevens nlen,

Taylor '83, and Maunsel White '79, and were obtained by heating certain grades of steel far beyond temperatures that were for~~ierly supposed to render them useless on account of fusing of the metal and resultant brittleness. It was the object of the tests to show that this heating did produce a better cutting steel, and that the process constituted a patentable invention, and not a modification of previous processes, Prof. Furman will direct an evening course in practical machine design at the Polytechnic 111stitute of Brooklyn.

A platinunl retort and condenser originally purchased by Dr. Leeds in 1870 for $400 is being converted into crucibles, triangles and electrodes for the useeof the junior class in quantitative analysis and electro-chemistry, The quality of the platinum is very high and on account of the advance in the price of the metal the value is now over $1,000. This will prove a very Useful addition to the chemical equipment, and the loss of the original apparatus will not be felt for it has been used but fiveor six times.

These rules shall be read before all classes by their respective presidents at the meeting preceding the contest of course, I do not expect that these suggestions cast in rule form should be adopted as they are. But what I do expect is that action should be taken by the student body as a whole.

On October 24, the Y. M. C. A. held its first public meeting The meeting was addressed by Mr. Charles A. Green of The Seamen's Aid Association, his subject being "The practical Value of Bible Study", The talk was terse and to the point, and was well timed, as a bible class is being formed which meet each Tuesday 1 2 ~ 3 0P. IN. T h e course to be followed is entitled " ~ i f eProblems.'' T h e first meeting will be NOT. 12.

Last Thursday Mr. William B. Hills of 57th St., (N. Y.) Y. M. C. A . addressed the meeting. H e is an able and forcible speaker, and gave us many thoughts practical to college life.

These meetings will be held every two weeks, and good speakers are assured. of the year.

As a result of the elections held Thursday, October 31, Thayer '08 is president of the Athletic Association; Butler '09 and Lippincott '09 are assistant lacrosse managers; Chandler '09 and Fonda '09 are the assistant baseball managers.

Class Notes* At a meeting of the class held October 28, the resignation of A. E. Skinner as class treasurer was read and accepted. On the following day E. Thomas was elected the new treasurer.

At a later meeting la& year's honor system committee was re-elected to serve during the present year.

At a business meeting of the Sophomore Class October 24, an appropriation of $25 was made for the Liz&.

The 'Varsity attended the N. Y, U.-Rutgers football game at Morris Heights, on election day as guests of the N. y. management. This was a return courtesy for our invitation to them to attend the Stevens-Rensselaer game. Result of game : N. y. U. 11, Rutgers 0.

Prep Notes.

Wednesday? October 23? the team played Newark Academy at Newark. The Academy kicked off and the preps advanced the ball up the field where tliey were held for downs. The fierce onslaught of the Academy backs taxed the preps to the utmost but they proved equal to their task. Choke scored the first touchdown but the try for goal failed. I n second half Newark succeeded in scoring and also kicked the goal thus gaining the advantage of one point over Stevens. The preps, however, sent Calahan over the line on a forward pass with only one minute of play left, thus saving the game. Final score Preps 10-Newark Academy 6 .

Saturday, October 30? the team defeated Boys High Schml by a score of 29-0.

Our secot~dleague game, played Noven~ber1, at Newark, resulted in a victory and placed us ill line for the pennai~t.

Stevens kicked off to Newark, and soon held them for S OW IS. Altho the ball was continually in Newark's territory, Stevens had to fight for the victory. Cooke was pushed over for the first touchdown. I n second half another touchdown was scored, making final score : Preps 10-Newark High 0.
