N Wednesday, October 16, a t 3 o'clock the two lower classes assembled in diffeqent- parts of the main building to array themselves- for lliF&abual rush. The sophomores were a motley crowd in their many-colored jerseys and the freshnsen with blackened faces and attired in overalls presented a rather ., terrifying appearance.

The freshmen were the first on the field but soon after tlie roll had been called the sophs, appeared a t the north end. Tlie sophomores-marched directly to the pole and, after their roll call, formed in a compact circle around the flag with arms interlinked, making an effective defense. They also mounted a man on the cross arm of the pole, a flinisey affair about ten ft. high with two bars attached at right angles and a small 1910 flag on the top.

In order to win the contest the freshmen had to get possession of this flag, and when Utz blew the whistle to begin they went after it as if they meant business. But the sophs. were equal to jng arms was nearly the occasion ; the circle formed by int impenetrable, for when one layer oken then the next would present itself. After about t nutes of rough-house the pole was broken and the flag cari-id'?o t h e ground, but the sophs. managed to keep it in their possession until the ten miuutes of the first half was up.

After the intermission the of the contest was moved near the Eighth St. entrance where the flag was nailed upon a small tree. The sopho$ores again used the same defense ; this time the freshmen were more successful in breaking' thru but of no avail, for t h o s e e 8 were forfonate enough to reach the tree were immediately thrown back by the p a n in the branches. The freshmen obtained one victory^ however, but not cfficially. When the sophs, marched back to the Institute along Hudson St. the fieshmen followed and completely broke up the parade. This part of the day's contest was the most interesting; they fought along the entire line of march. When the Institute was-reached--hostilities' cease& and ,- after -bandaging- the bruised, all departed in peace.

Stevens was unable to cope .with the superior team work and almost perfect interference of New York University on October 12, and lost by a score of 18 to 6. A lone touchdown by Roberts, which came as the result of a well-executed quarterback run, was the best the Red and Gray could do against the eleven from gotable one, marking as it did, the official astle Point campus. President Humphreys was prevailed upon to place the ball for the first kick-off, and a dance was planned for the evening, presumably to celebrate the victory we were to win in the afternoon. But the fates decreed otherwise.

At least the beginning of the ame was auspicious. As Skinner returned the ball almost to the centre of the field from Rust's kick-off and Thayer made it first down on a forward pass, the Stevens throng in the grand stand settled down cosily to watch the visitors' humiliation. Then the unexpected happened.

Thayer -was declared offside, N. Y.U. took the ball, rather than the penalty, and promptly proceeded to rip up the Stevens line for the first down twice i n succession. Rust punted behind the goal line, Roberts kicking out. A blocked kick gave the visitors the ball within striking distance of our line, and they did the rest by a couple of line plays and a forward pass that netted them ten yards. Steveits was again offside, the ball coming to our 2-yd. line. Mowen crossed on the next play, and Rust kick'edathegoal, making the score 6-0.

brought to Stevens' 2-yd. line, the Red and Gray line holding for downs in the shadow of its goal Posts.

The second half was more eventful. A missed tackle by Stevens, a forward pqss and an on-side kick allowed Young to score, Rust kicking the goal from the touchdown. Stevens then made a decided stand, recovered the ball and waltzed down the field with it. Roberts essayed a goal from the field, but the ball hit one of the uprights and bounced back. I t was just as well, however, as Stevens got the leather, Ridgway made a 12-yard run and Roberts turned the trick by circling right end for a touchdown and kicking the goal himself, making the score 12 to 6, Stevens tried some trick plays that worked well, but was finally forced to punt. N. Y. U. soon returned the kick, but regained the ball on a missed forward pass. Again were the New Yorkers forced to punt, but in turn forced the play and received the oblate spheroid. Doherty was then pushed across for the final tally, and Rust ended matters by kicking goal.

It bad been planned that the dance in Carnegie ~aboratory should commence at eight o'clock, but it was some time after that before the music was actually heard. The number of those who arrived early was small, but more continued to come until the floor gradually became comfortably filled. The N. Y. men were introduceclas generally as possible and during the evening a number of extras" were played at which time Stevells escorts were requested to "look on". Refreshments of ice cream and cake were served, and at twelve o'clock the gathering broke Up. At least one man from N. Y. U. was heard to remark that he felt the team had been royally treated.

HOPKINS 0.

on Saturday, October 19, the 'Varsity defeated Johns Hopkills by a score of 7 to 0 in a remarkably clean and well played game. Last year we went to Baltimore, but were only able to play a tie game with our old time lacrosse adversary ; it is many years since we defeated a Hopkins team. Both sides resorted to punting but Roberts easily had the better of the game along this tack. The line, which was weak against N. Y. U., took a fine stand and after a few minutes of play, Hopkins discovered that they were unable to touch it.

The changes in the line-up were jud-icious ; both Fonda and Buttfield played excellent games behind the line. Ridgway was our best ground gainer, his dodging in a broken field being comparable to that of Eddie billon of Princeton. The score would have been more had not 'Stevens' luck" intervened. Hearsey, after making a brilliant run from the center of the field for a touchdown, was called back because the referee had accidentally blown his whistle. Once Stevens had the ball within a foot of the line, but our opponents put up a fine defense and prevented a score.

The game started at 3:20. Hopkins kicked off and Ridgway ran the ball back to the center of the field. A forward pass to Sheldon carried the ball 15 yards nearer the goal, but after a , few plays that netted 20 yards more Hopkins nailed a forward pass. We received the ball on our 40-yd. line, and after a series .of punts the ball was finally put into play in the center of the field by Hopkins. Our opponents were penalized 15 yards on a forward pass. Sheldon broke thru on a punt and fell on the ball. Roberts punted and Stevens recovered the ball; an interchange of punts brought the ball into Ridgway's hands, and by clever dodging he recovered the 5-yd. line. Hopkins' line took a decided stand and held us for downs. In punting out, the ball was blocked and Tyson tackled the man who was trying to bring it out for a safety, making the score 2 to 0 , Hopkins kicked off from the 25-yd. line but regained the ball on a forward pass. A try for an onside kick resulted in a miserable failure, and Stevens carried the ball to the 20-yd. line, but the whistle prevented the score.

The second half opened with the kick off to Hopkins. A forward pass brought the ball back into our possession but it was soon lost on a similar play. Hopkins punted but Roberts returned and after a few minutes play we regained the ball on a fumble. Hearsey received a fine onside kick. Ridgway made a brilliant dash and brought the ball to the 5-yd. line and with the next play carried the ball over the line. The try for goal missed Score-7 to 0.

Hopkins kicked off to Sheldon but recovered the ball on a forward pass. There was an exchange of punts and Hopkins fumbled on their next play. Hearsey picked up the ball and made a fine run for a touchdown. The referee would not allow

At a meeting of the 1909 bowling club, held October 15, the following officers were elected for the year: president, Peper; .secretary, Butler ; treasurer, Schocli ; and manager, Draudt.

1910.

On Thursday afternoon, October 10, the Sophomore Class held its meeting for the election of officers in Dr. Wendell's room. The following were elected: president, B. V. Pfeiffer; vice-president, A. Heller ; treasurer, J. S. Ware, Jr. ; secretary, F. C. Krause ; historian, W.I?. Scully. 't

At a meeting of the Freshman Class on Friday, October 11, the class constitution originally drawn up by the Class of 1908 was adopted without any changes. The class decided to appropriate $50.00 for the Link of 1908.

A committee, consisting of Coffin, O'Gormau and Mollenwas elected to select a class yell.

Barlow, Brengel and Payne were elected a committee to draw up appropriate resolutions on the death of Mr. H o l l a d ~ ~ 1911.

Alexander R. Holladay.

Mr. Alexander Richmond Holladay, of the Class of 1911, died recently at his home in Tappan, N. Y. He had a very creditable record ip the Stevens School and entered the Institute directly from the Upper Middle Class, skipping the senior year.

CLASS RESOLUTIONS.

Whereas, God, by an act of His divine will, has seen fit to take Ă&#x201A;ÂĽfro us the soul of our friend and classn~ateAlexander R. Holladay, be it therefore Resolved, that we, the Class of 1911, take this means of expressing our deep sorrow ; and Resolved, that a copy of these resolutions be entered in the class annals, and be it further Resolved, that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the bereaved family as a token of our heartfelt sympathy.

H. B. PAYNE, J. F. BARLOW, J. BRENGEI,,JR. Mr. Howard N. Eschelman, of the Class of 1907, died at his home in Ridgewood, N. J., on October 16. H e contracted typhoid fever in Schenectady, and was taken to his home ten days before he passed away.

Engineering Society.

On Tuesday, October 15, the Engineering Society met in Prof. Denton's room. The report of the treasurer showed the society to be in good financial condition, and plans were discussed to the end that the present season may be profitable not only to the members but to the Institute at large. From time to time prominent outsiders will deliver lectures, and it is hoped that the first of these may be presented by Mr. John W. Lieb, '80 ; his subject will be " Pompeii," and the lecture will be illustrated.

AS membership in the Engineering Society is limited to seniors and juniors it is the duty of all those in any way interested to see that their names reach the secretary.

I t is always the aim of clean sport that no person shall be intentionally injured, whatever means may be used to block his progress. I t would seem, then, hardly fair to ask freshmen to face, not the possibility only, but almost the certainty of crushed fingers or a kick in the head, administered by a heavy shoe armed with football cleats.

At Columbia, while a man is allowed on the cross-arms, it is required that he wear rubber-soled shoes. This is a step in the right direction. But we believe, in view of this experience, a still better plan is that followed by the University of Colorado, where the banner is attached to a regulation flag pole-strong enough not to be pushed over by the massing of the men-and thefe are no cross-arms. I n this case it is a question of getting your man to the pole; not of having him, once there, beaten down by some opponent placed i n a position of vantage. Just as the old cane rush was compelled to step aside for the rag baby, because of its increasing tendency toward roughness, so has the rag babv t t rush now itself been retired for a similar reason; it is up to" the ~ ~ ~ ~ d e r g r a d ntoa tproperk es fill its place.

On Wednesday next the college will be given a half holiday to attend the annual cane sprees, tie-up, tug-0-war and senior frolic. Of courke, everyone will be on hand, so we need make no appeal for attendance. Faculty a n d Institute Notes.

Prof. Furman has replaced the old blue'print outside of his office by a new one brought up to date. This print gives examples of the principal draughting details as adopted by twenty of the most prominent manufacturers. A conlparison of these data with the old, shows that many concerns have revolutionized their systems, and it also shows that there is a strong tendency towards uniformity among the different firms. Much of the data gathered by Prof. Furman during the summer is represented in condensed form on this blue print.

Mr. Anson W. Burchard, ' 8 5 , has presented to the Morton Memorial Building a quarter horse-power direct current 110 volt shunt wound motor, to be used for driving the crusher and pulverizer i n the assay laboratory.

The State Sewage Commission, of which Mr. William S. Ackerman, '91, is secretary, were Dr. Stillman's guests on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 16. Mr. Ackerman was a member of the firm of Ackerman and Partridge, architects, who prepared the plans for the Morton Building.

Both volumes of Prof. Martin's work on Mechanics have been adopted at I,ehigli University as the regular text books on that subject.

I t was announced iu a former issue of THESTUTE Bristol will no longer hold classes a t the Institute. We have since learned that the statement was unauthorized, Prof. Brisk01 having been granted a leave of absence until January 1, 1908.

No arrangements have been made in regard to his work at the Institute after that date.

At the annual meeting of the American Gas Institute held recently at Washington, D. C., President Humphreys waselected president of the association for the coming year. At the meeting, there was a strong representation of Stevens men, and they were very active in the discussions that followed the papers.

Among the prominent Stevens alumni was Mr. Glasgow, '85, who has just returned from England.

The American Gas Liyht m n a l , in the issue of October 2 1, commenced reprinting President Humphrey s' paper on "Depreciation" which was delivered before the American Gas Institute. I n a later issue of the same paper will appear Prof. Ganz's lecture on Electrolysis" made a t the same meeting.

Prof. Jacobus delivered his first lecture to the present Senior Classon last Wednesday. His subject was "Feed Water Heaters."

The 'Varsity has been fortunate in having had Mr. E. B. Church, '04, and Mr. A. M. Morris, '07, as assistant coaches.

These old varsity players have made sacrifices to be with the team for a few days and their effort was greatly appreciated.

Chess Club.

The Chess Club held its first meeting for the year on afternoon of October 17. The association officers met recently, And since that time the various committees have actively started on the year's work.

Several new articles have been added to the furnishings of the room. During the last week a religious census, and canvas for members, has been conducted in the class of 1911; commencing next week it is planned to hold two afternoon each month, which will be addressed by men prominent ill Y. M. C. A. work and others.

Membership fee is only one dollar per year, and all who may wish the use of the reading room should leave their names with Searle, '09, secretary.

Prep Notes.

Well ! we are now in the midst of our football season and we have seen the team play. We certainly have the "beef" and it has been put to good use a number of times. We haven't been scored against and we want to uphold this record.

STEVENS 5-MORRIS

HIGH 0.

The Morris High game was played on October 5, and started at 10 A . M. The visitors proved to be a much harder propositio.1 than was expected, holding Stevens down to one touchdown.

STEVENS 24-COMMERCE 0.

On October 16, the Commerce eleven came over with the intention of beating us. Last year against a one-half 'Varsity and one-half scrub, they defeated us with a score of 5 to 0 and this year they evidently received a surprise, judging from the score.

The team played well and earned their victory by hard work.

Cooke played in his usual good style and materially helped to bring about the victory.

The first half ended with a total of 18 to 0 and in the second Stevens made victory a surety by adding a safety and a field goal to the sum, making the score 24 to 0. Cooke kicked the goals.

The Prep line-up was as follows : Left end, Pettibone and Fallon; left tackle, Cr~ithers;left guard, Cousins; center, Ryan and Cole; right guard, OIConnell; right tackle, Hane; right end, Callahan; quarterback, Wright; left halfback, Cooke; right halfback, Ackerman and Stinson; fullback, Schultze.

The third game of the season was played at the Ashland Oval on October 16, against East Orange High School and proved to be a revelation to the Stevens team.

The ground was like a cement floor and was covered with gravel and loose stones. Stevens repeatedly rushed the ball within a short distance of her opponents' goal only to lose it on fumbles. The brilliant work of Cooke was the feature of the game.

I n the second half a kicking game was resorted to, East Orange taking the advantage.
