Hobokern to b.e Invaded. rumor has just reached here that on November l l t h , Hoboken is to be invaded. According to this report, an army of red and black men are preparing to come up from New Brunswick, march to the Cricket Grounds, and trail our Red and Gray Stevens banner in the dust. But we are ready for them.

Cornstock has a veteran football team at his command, a team which has already proved its strength in offensive work and its tren~endousholding power when our goal is in danger. We are perfectly satisfied to put our team against any eleven-man combination which Rutgers can bring with her. Caffrey expects to have some four hundred Stevens men in line who, headed by a big brass band, will march around town and then down to the field, singing- our college song's and telling Rutgers of that soft resting place beneath Hoboken sod. ' ' This game with Rutgers is the second between the two colleges this year. The teams are evenly matched as can be judged from the score of the first game of the season, played at New Brunswick,-Rutg-ers 6, Stevens 0. And now that the season is drawing to a close, each side has reached its maximum strength, so that the contest to-morrow will probably prove to be the best and hardest fought game of the year. Bring your friends to the game, Stevens Girls " in particular, and get them to yell their loudest. Seniors should especially remember that this is the last Stevens football game which they can attend as undergraduates and should make a special effort to be present.

The A t h l e t i c A s s o c i a t i o n Meeting.

An A. A. 'meeting took place Thursday Nov. 2nd, at 4.15.

I t was called to order by President Pratt and the minutes of the preceding meeting read by the Secretary.

A proposed amendment, suggested by Mr. Cuntz, President of the Athletic Committee of the Alumni Association, was read, its purport being that Alumni might become members of the Athletic Association, upon the payment of $5.00 per annum, and might enjoy the privileges of using the tennis courts, .of being admitted to games etc. This amendment was laid on the table, there being no discussion.

An amendment, suggested by Mr. Knoblock, 1908, to the effect, that, each year, a Sophomore member be chosen by the Association, to act as a temporary football manager for the incoming freshman class was also laid on the table after discussion.

Mr. Pratt then read part of the agreement between the A.A. and the Faculty Advisory Committee, on the subject of baseball as a Varsity sport, and a letter from Pres. Humphreys on the same subject. The following paper was read by Secretary Norris defining the stand of the Executive Board of the Association: < You have undoubtedly all seen and read this agreement and are familiar with its terms, as it was posted on the bulletin board and published in THE;STTJTE.The agreement was drawn up by Pres. Humphreys, accepted by a majority of the Executive Board present and signed by the then President of the Association, Mr. Hegeman, 1905. I think that all present will admit that this agreement was accepted at its face value by the undergraduate body of the Institute.

I do not intend to enter the pros and cons of baseball nor do I believe that the situation admits of any such discussion. We the Executive Board, have bound ourselves under this contract t o secure recognition as a Varsity team for the baseball club.

This contract is a binding one in spite of what may be said to the contrary. I t is binding to this association, because it was signed by the highest executive of the association, it is binding because it was thus signed with the consent of a majority of the Executive Board, who were duly elected to represent you, it is binding because it has stood unchallenged by the undergraduate body for a period of nearly seven months, and it is binding because under article two which reads :- That, of the extra subscriptions canvassed by the baseball men plus Pres. Humphreys' addittanaJsubscription and Dr. SevenoaKs subscri@tion, 50% is to go to the baseball club and. the rest to the athletic association', we have received through the baseball club benefits that we should be unable to repay without seriously crippling the association.

I t may be easily calculated how much our indebtedness is under this agreement. W e thereby added to our membership nearly eighty names, or in money to our -treasury, two hundred and 1

forty dollars. Pres. Humphrey~'and Dr. Sevenoak's subscrip' tions together amounted to two hundred dollars making a suto total of four hundred and forty dollars, half of which was refunded to the baseball d u b and the remainder went to the credit of the association.

That this agreement was considered binding by the present executive board which has been elected since the conference at which the course prescribed was decided upon, is proven by the fact that this money has been used without question by this board. If two parties enter into a contract in which one principal binds himself to perform a certain service for the second, contingent upon the payment to him of a certain sum of money and this sum is paid as per contract, then it assuredly devolves upon the first party to perform said service or refund the money.

Thus it is with our association; it has bound itself through its Bxecutive board to perform a certain service for the baseball club contingent upon decision of Advisory Board, and in return receive fifty per cent of money which they otherwise would not have gotten. The money is received and used and the Advisory Board decides that we must perform this service to the baseball club. Therefore I say that in justice we must live up to this contract. You men of the Association gave your consent to this agreement by your silence; you may or may not believe that such an agreement will work out for the good of the Association but it must be'kept in mind that fair play among ourselves does more good for the Association than any victories we may win on the athletic field. The acceptance of this agreement goes against the @&inwith many of us, no one knows that better than I do, but we must place a square deal ahead of personal opinions.

In dosing- 1would say that the Executive Board requests the Association to uphold them in carrying but their contract. More than that they cannot ask. I t lies with each man and each,man alone, whether he will support the contract agreed to, wader w matter what circumstances, by his duly elected representatives.

Therefore. I move that the following amendment be made to the Bylaws of the Constitution ; That a subdivision D be added to Article 15, Section I , reading": Members of the Varsity baseball team who shall have played 60% or more of the games played, shall be awarded their ' S ' .' ' Mr. Gaffney suggested an amplification of the amendment to cover representation on the Executive Board, cash support etc.

To comply with Mr. Gaffney's request Mr. Van Nortwiek made and Mr. Norri sseconded the following motion: I move that Article 111, Section 3 be amended to read: They, (the members of the Executive 3owd) shall be the Presidenti Vice-president, Secretary, Treasurer and Managers of the Varsity Football, Lacrosse and Baseball teams," Mr. Davis moved that the Constitution be laid aside so' that the amendment could be acted on immediately. Mr. Beckman moved for a standing vote on this amendment.

After a discussion of this motion, the vote was taken and the motion lost. A further discussion ensued concerning the mount of money to be put at the disposal of the baseball department; the ability of the A. A. to make a sufficient grant etc. This was finally ended by the President because of pressure of time.

Mr. Norris moved an immediate vote on the amendment, Carried, While ballots were being distributed, Mr. Murray moved that recognition be taken o f t h e services of Mr. h e & , of the Institute Treasurer's office, for assistance to the A. A. Carried.

The balloting on the amendments resulted in 118votes being cast in their favor, against 57 in opposition, giving 1more than the required two-thirds. The meeting adjourned at 5.15.

Situation.

During the past two weeks the fig+! between fraternity and non-fraternity men for control of the Link' ' reached a serious aspect, neither side appearing the least willing to yield. I t has even gone as far as the election of two distinct L i n k f ' boards and competition for advertisements for the two annuals was hot while it lasted.

Within the last four days however the situation has changed materially and in all probability the unfortunate squabble will soon be amicably settled. While earlier attempts at compromise failed, wiser counsel prevailed, and on November 6 a senior from each fraternity met the board of editors elected by the class to discuss the matter. A form of compromise was drawn up which the members of this conference will endeavor to have adopted by the class and the fraternities.

The plan is as follows : Both boards are to unite and jointly publish the I , i n k of 1906." The class is to finance the book and the fraternities are to be charged for their pages at the same rate as other clubs. The pages on which the emblems of the different fraternities are printed are to be furnished the board as in the past. Furthern~orea constitution governing the selection of future *'Link" boards is to be drafted and presented to the .

Institute for ratification. By this means it is hoped to avoid the possibility of a recurrence of this year's dispute.

The team started out Saturday afternoon expecting a very ^-hard game with N. Y. U,, but lo, after the first few minutes of play the Red and Gray stock went up with a rush and the Violet Ă&#x201A;ÂĽ'camdown with a thud. This was so in spite of the fact that 3.Y. U. claimed that it was their last e a s y " game and that it kkould be good "practiceJ7for them, in spite of the fact that we had 1 2 opponents,-11 N. Y. U. men, and a referee who came from "that college across the river," for his decisions were rank more than once. Another difficulty was, that there were only fifty rooters present, of which not more than twelve were upper class men. This was very poor support for such a team as ours has proved itself to be. But now for the game.

Roberts'kicked off to N. Y. U. at 3.30 and the ball was brought back to the 30-yard line. But on the first three downs Mudge, Leonhard and Thayer got their men without gains and thus forced the Violet to punt. I t was a poor attempt and the ball became ours on the 35-yard line. After Mathews made first down once, N. Y. U. braced and Pratt tried a drop kick that just missed the posts. N. Y. U. kicked out to the middle of the field but Pratt brought it back to the 40-yard line. Here our backs succeeded in first down three times. Mudge was caught off-side and we got-5 yards. Then Roberts tried a quarter-back run but was thrown for a loss of 8 yards. This again forced Pratt to try a drop, but N. Y. U. was too quick and the kick was blocked.

N. Y. U. was soon forced to punt but we had to follow suit.

The New York College now displayed its best attackof the game and made first down six times, the gains being chiefly around the ends. But on the 20-yard line after the 2nd down Thayer caught his man for a loss of 5 yards. N. Y. U. tried a drop, but this kick was of a similar calibre to the punting and the ball did not reach its mark. Roberta ran the ball back to the 20-yard line and then Stevens simply r i p p e d them up." When the second half opened it was found that the pace set

by Stevens had been too hot for several N. Y. U. men and these were replaced by new players. The Violet kicked off and Pratt carried the ball to the 20-yard line. After Van Syclde had failed to gain through the line Thayer made first down around the end.

Comstock duplicated the play for 10 yards. Immediately after, Thayer again skirted the end but for 40 yards this time. Then the backs, Leonhard, and Comstock brought the ball to the 5-yard line. Here N. Y. U. went wild ; the men kicked and reviled each other for their poor playing. Van Syckle and Stout each made 10 yards and then Pratt took the ball to within a yard of the goal. Van Syckle made it 22 points and then Roberts added one more. Score~Stevens,23 ; N. Y. U., 0. The last few minutes were played in semi-darkness, but we were ready to add six more points to our credit when time was called. Then the little bunch of Stevens rooters went wild and jn$t howled.

Columbia Law Game.

What more resembled a Prep School game than a Varsity game, was that played against Columbia Law School's team on Wednesday, November 1. Hardly one play was run off without a tedious delay caused by a disputed decision, in consequence of which, although the halves were exceedingly short, the game was finished in darkness. The Varsity played a loose, ragged game and did not seem to get together more than once or twice during both halves. I t is true that we played again against twelve men most of the time, and that some of the decisions were very questionable, still for a team that defeated N. Y. U. by a score of 23 to 0, the showing was verg poor. Let us hope that it was only due to an off day.

Columbia kicked off to us at 4.15 but the ball went over the line and they kicked over again to Pratt who brought it back to the 25-yard line. Van Syckle, Mathews and Pratt succeeded in making only 4 yards and the ball went to the New Yorkers. On the first play they fumbled but the next one netted 10 yards and another first down placed the ball on our 10 yard line. Another fumble was recovered and the ball then taken to within %-yard of our goal line. The next rush took it over but after a long wrangle, it was brought back for Columbia had had 6 men back of the line. Here Stevens showed a glimmer of real football and held Columbia for downs. Roberts kicked out of danger and the ball was soon at our 5-yard line again. They fumbled however, and Pratt fell oti the ball. Thayer got 25 yards on a pretty end run and the ball was going down the field when the whistle blew.

Our kick off went to the 5-yard line and the oval was brought back almost to the middle of the field. Columbia made short gains but lost the pigskin on a fumble. Mathews made 25 yards, Cornstock 20 yards and Thayer 10 but fumbled. The ball was recovered, by Leonhard. Pratt then dropped a pretty goal from the 25-yard line, but the Columbia referee claimed the whistle had not blown twice and the ball was brought back. On the next attempt the kick was blocked but Leonhard again saved Thayer took the ball and eluding , the ball for the Red and Gray. all tacklers placed it directly behind the posts. Roberts kicked goal. Score, 6-0. The rest of the time was occupied in the kick off and a couple of plays but no more scoring was done.

Well! Well! There is certainly no excuse for not coming out to root for the team on the ground that it can't play, for in the last four games it has rolled up 87 points to our opponents' 0 .

Here is the way in which we made 23 against Pratt: Roberts kicked off at 3.35 and Pratt Institute brought the ball back to their 25-yard line. From there they succeeded in making three first downs, chiefly on end runs. On their 45-yard line our team braced and took the ball on downs. Here Van Syckle, the Stevens "Iron Man, " made 15 yards through tackle and Comstock follobed with 8 yards around the end. Van Syckle failed to gain through the line but on the second attempt got 4 yards. Once more he carried the ball and made first down easily. Hearsey replaced Mathews who was kicked in the head.

At 3.54 Roberts kicked off and Cowenhoven downed his man on the 20-yard mark. The Black and Yellow only made its distance once and then was forced to kick. H. Pratt was downed in the middle of the field. Roberts made 9 yards in a quarterback run. Hearsey who was given the ball, fumbled but recovered with no gain. Van Syckle then made first down and so did Hearsey. Comstock was given the ball for an end run but our line broke and he lost a yard. Thayer then made 2 yards and H . Pratt was forced to try a drop kick. I t failed and it was Pratt's ball at their 15-yard line. They made things lively for a while and got 34 yards before Stevens held them for downs.

Thayer then made a good run around the end but as he went out of bounds the play netted only 4 yards. Comstock worked the other side for 15 yards more. Van Syckle followed with 5 yards and Hearsey with 6 . Hartford was shoved over for a touchdown. Roberts did the same as before. Score-Stevens, 12; Pratt, 0.

One of Pratt's backs got the ball on the kick-off and eluded 10 of our men but was fortunately brought to the ground by Roberts on Pratt's 50-yard line. Then followed an exchange of punts in which we bested Pratt, the half ending- with the ball ours, and well in Pratt's territory. We received the ball in the opening of the second half and Van Syclde, who fumbled, only reached our 20-yard line. Stevens was forced to kick but Pratt fumbled and Hearsey got the ball on their 45-yard line. Hearsey got three yards around the end and then made first down through tackle. Thayer advanced the ball 1 2 yards and Pratt and Cowenhoven each got 6 yards. On an end play Comstock made 3 yards and Van Syckle brought the ball to the 15-yard line.

Hearsey got 10 yards and Van Syclde 4 more, Hearsey went the rest of the distance and Roberts added an extra point. ScoreStevens 18 ; Pratt 0. The ball went to the Black and Yellow on the kick-off. Pratt was soon forced to punt but we immediately lost the ball on downs. Pratt again found our defense too stiff and it was Stevms' 11 on their opponents 50-yard line.

Van Sydde who was played twice in succession made 25 yards. Cornstock got 10 yards and Van Syckle advanced the same. Ccwenhoven made 2 yards and Van Syckle brought the ball within six inches of the line and there Pratt held us. We were penalized 5 yards for off side play but Pratt punted to the %-yard line. Cornstock skimmed the end for 30 yards and H. Pratt made a touch-down. Fonda failed to lade the goal. This ended the game. Score~Stevens,23; Pratt, 0.

So the team cut another notch in the handle of its tomahawk and it has given us every reason to believe that it will cut a 5th one to-morrow.

.The Senior Class met on the morning of Nov. 6th, Vice-President Gaffney presiding. The main business of the meeting was the election of a new president, Mr. Anderson having' resigned.

The new candidates were David Bolder and W. W. Walker, of whom the former received the majority of the votes. Mr. Elder conducted, the rest of the meeting.

1907.

At a meeting held on Monday, October 30Ãit was decided that the Board of Editors of the Stevens Year Book should be elected, from and by the class. This stand was taken because the book appears as a Junior Class publication. The following menwere elected editors: William H . Cook, ?&on 0.

Freshman Caps.

I n the last issue were published certain rules, drawn up by a joint committee for the establishment of certain college tugtoms. Since, however, at a gathering of the entire college, Pres. Humphreys said, that compelling any one to accept these rules against his wish would be breaking Faculty regulations with serious consequences to the offender, it would have been irnpossible to have strictly enforced them, and without which rigid enforcement they would have proved worse than none at all.

The Freshmen, however, with true college spirit, came forward and decided, for the sake of establishing the custom, to wear a uniform class cap. The remaining classes appear to be well satisfied with the action the Freshmen have taken.

The Engineering Society.

On Wednesday, November 22nd a special illustrated lecture will be held in the Auditorium at the close of the day's session.

It will be given by Mr. F. S. Greene on the subject of "Rope Transmission of Power."

Mr. Greene is a friend of Prof.

Shoudy and is deeply interested in Stevens. As this is a subject barely touched upon in the regular course, it is hoped that a large representation from each class will be present. All students are welcome.

The Engineering Society held its third meeting on November 10 in Prof. Denton's room. After the routine business had been transacted, the names of Devlin '06, O'Keefe '07, and J. I. Liner '07, were presented for membership and accepted.

The value of Parliamentary law, with which the Society hopes to familiarize its members, and its importance to Stevens men, were then discussed.

I I The paper of the day was on The Manufacture of Chocolate, ' ' by Mr. Fieux '06. H e first gave a historical review of the industry, stating the location of the principal plants in this country

and abroad. He also explained the method of cultivation of the bean, the various places where it is grown and the peculiar characteristics of each variety. The various processes of manufacture were then described, including the washing and cleaning of the bean, the mixing to produce the best possible results, and the roasting, shelling and grinding. Here the processes in the manufacture of cocoa and chocolate, Mr. Fieux said, are separated. The ground, pasty mass, is placed under extremely high pressure and the cocoa butter forced out. THe result is a brown mass from which cocoa is made without any further additions.

The same pasty brown mass mentioned before, mixed with some of the cocoa butter, sugar, vanilla and other ingredient, results in chocolate.

During the presentation of the paper, Mr. Fieux passedaround samples illustrating the result of each step in the process, from the raw bean to the finished product. This made the paper very interesting ¥an very instructive, and those absent missed one of the treats of the year.

The next regular meeting -will be held this afternoon at 4.10 in Dr. Geyer's room. Mr. Elder '06 will speak on " ~ i g h Pressure Distribution of Gas," and Mr. Carey '06 on the 'Diezel Gas Engine. ' '

Tennis.

The Stevens Tennis Team finished the playing season on Saturday, October 28, with a victory over the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. Our team consisted of Gaffney (Capt. ), Hamilton, Stewart, Rossig and Walker; theirs, of Jones (Capt.), Leslie, Post, Mitchel and Dunn. We won three single matches and doubles against two singles and one doubles for our opponents, The scores were as follows: Jones vs. Gaffney, 6-ZÃ3-6, 8-6.

Stewart vs. Post, 6-1, 6-3.

Rossig vs. Mitchel, 6-3, 6-1.

Dunn vs. Walker, 6-4, 6-0.

Stewart and Rossig vs. Dunn and Post, 8-6, 6-2.

This makes the third victory for our team out of the four matches played this year and augurs very well for a continued success in the spring.

Faculty and Institute Notes* Prof. Ganz. has recently completed a series of tests of dry battery cells used for automobile ignition. H e is now conducting tests of graphite brushes. '

Pres. Hurnphreys and Prof. Ganz have accepted invitations to serve on the Honorary Reception Committee on the opening night of the coming Electrical Exposition in Madison Square Garden.

The new catalogue will be issued in January. Copy for it is now being prepared. One of the new features will be a birds'eye view of the Institute grounds including the new campus, an artist having been engaged by the Faculty to make the drawing.

The Senior Class is showing strong electrical tendencies.

At the meeting of the N. Y. Blectrical Society on October 23rd, and at which Peter Cooper Hewitt lectured on the conduction of electricity through gases about thirty Seniors were present.

About twenty-five of them attended a lecture on lightning protectors and arresters delivered at the American Institute meeting' on October 27th.

The Electrical Department has added to its equipment a number of Westinghouse alternating current switchboard instruments of the inductive type, having- an- unusually long scale, large divisons and large numbers so as to be easily read from a distance. They are the first of this type the department has received, and will be used in the dynamo laboratory and also in the lecture room for illustrating alternating current tests.

The work on the new building is progressing at a favorable clip, The tunnel connecting it with the Prep. School, and through which the steam mains and wires will be conducted, is nearly finished. Stairs are now being put in, and the approach to the building will soon be begun. Po& motors for the ventilating- apparatus have been presented by the C. &. C. Electric Motor Co. The only serious accident during the building's construction so far, occurred two weeks ago -when one of the employees fell from the third story scaffold to the ground causing severe injuries.

THB UTE sincerely regrets its inability to publish in this issue an accoant of Wednesday's Cane Spree, Tug-of-War , TieUp, and the Senior Masquerade Dinner held in the evening at Quartette Club Hall. We trust, in fact we know, that accounts of these events will still be of sufficiefit interest two weeks from to-day to be contained in oar next issue.

TEESWTS is sadly in need of material for its "joke department. ' 1 Variety is the spice of life, and a good joke or witty rhyme is always welcome, particularly so if original. There is no telling what you can do until you try, Try your hand in this line and let the editors have it.

A mass meeting was held in the Carnegie laboratory of Engineering, on Tuesday, at which tlie School voted to join a new athleti~leaguecomposed of the following schools: Montelair High, East Orange High, Newark High, and Stevens School. At the meeting the football coach made avery stirring' speech on school qpirit. What he said is true; we cannot have good teams unless the fellows show more school spirit by either coming out and playing on the scrub or by attending the games and cheering for the team.

On Saturday, October 28, the School Football Team was defeated by the Montclair High School Team by the score of 6-0.

The line-up was as follows : Right End, Bosfrwick; Right Tackle, Braine; Right Guard, Pritchard; Center, Hinckley; Left Guard, Smith; heft Tackle, Sturgis; Center, Haxtranft (Jones): Quarterback, Haynes; Right Halfback, Kelley; Left Halfback, White; Fnllback, Bay (Howard).

SENIOR CLASS DANCE. Since the dance given last year by '05 proved such a success 0 6 has decided to continue the custom. I t will be toward the latter part of January or early in February. We intend to make this the most brilliant social affair given in Stevens School, and therefore need the hearty support of every Senior in the Prep.
