HE Old Mill is busy once again. I t happened a week ago

to-day-September 25, to be exact-as some members of the two lower classes may remember. About 8:30 A . M. on that Wednesday morning there was to be observed much shaking of hands among the returning students. We believe this is the usual preliminary to a bout. " The bulletin board announced that Pres. Humphreys would meet the college at 9:30, but-as luck would have it-the meeting was somewhat earlier, and not in the auditorium either. However, at the proper time the program, as outlined by the faculty, was allowed to proceed and the silence which reigned during the President's address gave evidence of the many sides of a college student's nature. I n his address the President welcomed all four classes and briefly outlined certain plans which have been made for the year's work. Announcement was made of the changes in the faculty and of various additions to the curriculum. Dr. Humphreys spoke with much feeling of the breach last June of the honor system oath by four members of the Junior Class and expressed it as his opinion that the three men suspended were leniently dealt with." I t has also been deemed advisable to omit until further notice, the turning of the Seniors' last class day into a visiting day. Reference was made to the new athletic field and all men were urged to take some form of outdoor exercise. I n closing, the President referred to the loss to the Institute, thru death, of the President of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Dod; Robert I.,. Stevens, a son of our Founder; and a number of alumni-among whom was Walter H. I,ange,'06.

After this gathering the four classes separated and were met by the various professors.

This occupied the time until 11:10, and at 11:30 the students once more assembled in the auditorium to be " filled with enthusiasm." Kirkman, President of the Senior class, presided and introduced the various speakers. The usual appeals were made for support to student activities, and Mr. Saunders, football coach, gave a five minute talk on enthusiasm in general. Prof. Knapp said he would like to make a special announcement to the freshmen, and with this the day's exercises were brought to a close.

"Play Ball!"

With the C. C. N. Y. game, the football season begins this afternoon, and it is your duty to give it a good start. Let every man in college go up to the field at three o'clock ready to cheer, sing, and yell, with all his might. T h e men on the team have worked hard for the past two weeks and you must show that you appreciate their efforts.

There is no excuse now for staying away from a game ; you. cannot complain of the poor accomodations offered a t the Cricket Grounds, or of the long tiresome walk to Tenth and Clinton St. Now we have a field within a block of the college, fitted up in the finest fashion.

You may not believe in the value of cheering. If so, you are mistaken ; any man who has played on a team will vouch for the encouraging powers of cheering,-for the part that cheering plays in a victory. Cheering is to football what martial music is to war; it inspires the participants to do great things. If you are still an unbeliever, go up this afternoon and be convinced.

Anent the Princeton Game.

On Saturday, the football team will travel to Princeton and we hope that Stevens will have a fair representation in the rooters stand. In spite of the fact that the Princeton game was played on a Wednesday last year, about ten men went down with the team; surely, on a Saturday we should at least be able to double this number. Notice of the time of leaving, costs etc., will be posted on the bulletin board.

The "Link of 1908."

The present board wish to announce that the ink of 1908 will be published with as many changes and new departments as is deemed justifiable for the betterment of the publication. In a few weeks agents will circulate anlong the various classes n i t h pledges for the purchase of copies. We wish to urge upon the students the necessity of signing these pledges as soon as possible iu order that the board may know just how large an issue to publish and thus devote more effort to the quality of the publication.

We wish to call the attention of the freshmen especially, to tMe fact that this is the only college publication which in after life is, as the name implies, an inseparable link with college days, containing, as it'does, complete records of all class and I n stitute contests, pictures of all teams, names and addresses of all students, etc. No freshman can afford to be without such a useful publication when he may obtain a copy at the extremely reasonable price of one dollar and a half.

T h e board is in urgent need of short stories, poems, jokes, etc., and anyone with ability along this line should hand his contribution to G. E. Terwilliger, Editor-in-Chief, as soon as possible. We also require a number of drawings of department headings, tail-pieces, etc. Anyone wishing to contribute drawings of any kind whatsoever should communicate with W .

G. Mixer, Art Editor, at his earliest convenience and ascertain just what is needed. All drawings will be returned as soon as the cuts are made.

However, the most necessary adjunct to a successful publication is a large number of advertisements. The board has decided to offer any student a commission of ten per cent. on all advertisements and anyone wishing to solicit such may obtain rates and contract blanks from the Business Manager, W . S. Moss.

LINK BOARDOF 1908.

'97 Gift.

At the reunion last June, the Class of 1897 decided to present to the Institute a $1,000 entrance to be placed at the north end of the athletic field, facing Castle Point Terrace. The gateway is to be constructed of concrete and "ran scroll work and will be about 30 feet in width. There will be a 12-foot roadway -in the middle with a 4-foot path on each side. Plans are now being prepared.

Peter Minck, '07, has recovered from a severe attack of typhoid fever and is now representing E. Burhorn, 71 Wall Street.

After due consideration, the Board decided to devote the surplus quoted above to the establishment of a permanent home for THESTUTE.One of the new rooms in the basement of the main building was allotted the paper by the Institute authorities, and during the summer this has been fitted up in such a manner as it is thought will meet all the present needs of the publication.

Mandolin Club.

The Mandolin Club this year needs a lot of new men to encourage competition. The most pressing need, however, is for guitar and banjo men. I t is impossible to turn out the proper kind of a club without good bass and plenty of it. If the requisite number of basses is not forthcoming, it will be necessary to use a piano as a substitute with the result that most of the pieces will be completely spoiled.

Notices of rehearsals will be placed upon the bulletin board in the corridor and everybody should look at that board at least once a day. As a last appeal, don't be afraid, but come out and try at least ; it won't hurt you, CONDIT, leader.

one examination in one week and the other in two weeks. If these examinations are passed, the men are allowed to enter their classes, and must then make up the work they have lost. To insure this, and to prevent a mere shifting of conditions from now to the end of the term, a series of tests will be given about October 31 in which these men are expected to show that they have caught up with their class.

By the time this paper reaches your hands the routine of college life will be pretty definitely established, and student activities well under way. Now is the time to consider what you would wish the contents of THESTUTE to be, for the Contriremainder of the year. You are interested and buttons. actively engaged in some particular sport, club or society ; this takes much of your time and attention appears you want to read in it the news of and when THESTUTE all the other departments of the college. I t is clearly impossible for three or four men to see or hear all that goes on from day to day, and it is your duty-as well as to your interest-to keep the Board informed regarding what happens in your class, team or club.

All fcontributions need not, however, be in the nature of news. Short humorous stories, new jokes, epigrams to be used as headings ; in fact everything literary and of merit is solicited.

Faculty and Institute Notes.

Prof. Bristol will no longer hold classes at the Institute, due to the increased amount of time demanded of him by his business interests.

Mr. Crisson has assumed the work of Prof. Moore in the Electrical laboratory. T h e position vacated by Mr. Crisson has been filled by I,. A. Hazeltine, '06. Mr. Hazeltine has been employed for the past year and a half in the various testing departments of the General Electric Co., Schenectady, N. Y., and has obtained considerable experience in laboratory methods.

Both drawing rooms have been renovated during the summer.

The east room has been furnished with new tables, and ventilators have been placed in the ceilings of both the rooms.

I n the explanation of electrical laboratory exercises a new system has been adopted. T h e instructors hold half sections instead of full sections. This allows more individual attention and encourages questions. ' Thru Dr. Weston, of the Weston Electric Instrument Co., the Engineering Department has been presented with six voltmeters and six ammeters.

The Physics Department has acquired in the same manner an illuminated dial millivoltmeter and a portable ammeter and voltmeter for lecture-room purposes.

There has been practice since the 18th and we have had a fine showing, but there are many who have not come out as yet who could probably make the team. Monday the 23rd1 it rained in torrents but still the team was on the field. Practice was short, however, on account of the delicate condition of the sod.

We want the pennant this year. A nice banner would look well beside the one of last year's baseball team, which by the way, will be received soon after the first meeting of the Interscholastic A. A. The old candidates out this year are the following: (Captain) Schultze, Hahne, Ryan, Cooke, Ackerrnan and Cruthers.

Sandmeyer, who played tackle last year will be unable to play this season owing to an injury received in the Betts game last year and he will prove a great loss to the squad.

The first game comes on the 5th of October and is with Townsend Harris. Everybody come to the game and support the team.

Manager Horr has a promising schedule for the season which is as follows : SATURDAY, October 5-Townsend Harris.

Perhaps-could it be possible?-perhaps the pledge is'nt necessary. We are grown up ; honest we are. If the faculty do come from Missouri, why, just let's show 'em, then another year perhaps-we won't have to ask, have you signed the pledge?"
