Opening Day.

N Wednesday, September 26, Stevens Institute opened her

doors for the thirty-sixth time, and another year of work and study was begun at " T h e Old Mill." Many a fine product has she turned out in these years. May she ever continue her noble work for the benefit of mankind.

The Freshmen set the program of the day going by charging the Sophomores, who had taken their stand on the evermaltreated terrace. " They were repulsed with great loss of coats and shirts, but persisted in their attempts to dislodge 1909 until all the sod had been removed. Peace was not proclaimed till 9:45,when the College assembled in the Auditorium to hear President Humphrey's opening address.

Dr. Humphreys welcomed the student body, wishing them a successful year, and gave some very practical advice. H e said that with the graduation of each class came a greater realization of his responsibilities as President of Stevens and a keener appreciation of the duties of that office. H e hoped for an increase in student government and for less faculty discipline; that the upper classmen would set a good example and be wise advisers for the under classmen. H e impressed upon the student body the facts that each one has responsibilities, and must accomplish something for the good of humanity by virtue of his talents; and that every one must accept the opportunities given at Stevens and make the most of them. Dr. Humphreys earnestly hoped that the four classes would follow the good example set by the Class of 1906 and adopt the Honor System for examinations. H e announced that hereafter every student would be charged five dollars for athletic dues-three dollars to be paid to the Athletic Association and entitling admittance to all home games, two dollars to be spent for the improvement of the new athletic field.

After the classes had met the various Professors, who out lined the year's work, a mass meeting was held m the Auditorium to promote interest and enthusiasm in the different student activities. President Willis, of the Senior Class, presided and introduced Norris, the President of the Athletic Association, as the first speaker. Norris spoke very enthusiastically of the prospects in athletics for the coming year. He said that Stevens had been accused of having no college spirit. But he was sure there was plenty of it here and was convinced that there was a lack of individual spirit in the one who made this accusation. H e announced that Dr. Pond, as Faculty Treasurer of the Athletic Association, would take charge of the Association's moneys and audit its accounts.

Cowenhoven next spoke in the interests of football. He announced that Mr. Stillman, a graduate of Yale, had been engaged as coach; and that a fine team was expected. He emphasized the importance of having a strong scrub and hoped due credit would be given the scrub man for his pluck and perseverance. He earnestly requested the student body to be present at scrub games to cheer on the teams.

Roberts, the lacrosse captain, urged the new men to come out to get practice in stick handling. He said there would be regular fall work and that, if permission could be obtained, practice would be held on the new athletic field.

Henes then made a few remarks in regard to baseball at Stevens. He said that only two of last year's team had been lost by graduation, so that the prospects were exceedingly bright.

Grubb spoke of the creditable work done by the basketball team last year, and that he expected greater success this year.

Wolley called attention to the fact that Stevens had as fine tennis courts as any college in the country, and said that with such facilities existing a first class team would be turned out. if sufficient interest was taken in the sport.

Walker, the manager of the musical clubs, announced that there were a number of vacancies in the clubs, and that any man with some ability would be sure of a position. H e expressed the hope that this year Stevens would be again represented by a banjo club.

Dienst led the cheering, and each speaker was given a rousing send-off.

At a meeting of the editorial board of the e ink of 1907," on September 28, the following- officers were elected: A. T. %eonhard, Editor-in-Chief; W, S. Atwater, Business Manager; C. H. To the Alumni.

Football practice began on Wednesday, September 19, a week before the opening day of college. We were handicapped at first by the oppressive weather, but in spite of this twelve men reported for work. The squad has been increased from day to day, until at present about twenty-five men are to be seen at the Cricket Grounds every afternoon. Five men are missing from last year's team, but we expect to fill the vacancies with men quite as strong as those who have left us.

Unfortunately, we are unable to use the new athletic field for our games, as the sod will not yet stand the hard wear and tear given by a football team. This is a great disappointment to all and obliges us to fall back upon the old Cricket Grounds with its many drawbacks. However, the management has been able to secure the quarters of the Hoboken baseball team, which is quite an improvement over the old dressing room at the other end ofI the field.

Phil" Stillman, the crack centre-rush of Yale's strong '94 team and of the All-American team of that year, is acting in the capacity of coach. This is a source of great gratification to the whole college, as it would have been next to impossible to secure a man better qualified for this important position. Although he has only been with us for a short time, he has already won the confidence of the entire squad, a thing absolutely essential for the development of a successful team.

Engineering Society.

The first business meeting of the year was held on Tuesday, Oct. 2. A good proportion of the members were present, and judging by the interest shown, the future looks promising.

The lecture committee-Traver, Mervine, and B. A. Meyer -is hard at work. They are arranging for talks and discussions at the business meetings, and are also preparing a course of lectures. Dr. Humphreys will deliver the' first of the series this afternoon at 3 o'clock, in Prof. Geyer's room.* Every student in the Institute is invited to attend.

The membership committeeĂ&#x192;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Cook Cole, and Brown-has received several applications for membership from Juniors. Any Junior or Senior desiring to become a member should see this committee at once. The dues are merely nominal, other requirements are easy, and the benefits are many.

The next business meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 16, a t 4 P. M., in Prof. Denton's room. At that time a special election will be held to fill a vacancy in the treasurership. Other important business will come before the meeting.

A meeting of the executive committee will be held this afternoon at 3 o'clock, at which time plans for the year's work will be discussed. The greatest need at the present time is a permanent meeting place-a room for the exclusive use of the Association and its members. Means to this end were talked of during the last spring term, but circumstances prevented the plans being carried out. Any suggestion from members, or others, along this line will be welcomed. The first business meeting of the Association is to be held within the next week or ten days; watch the bulletin board, and try to make the attendance '"unanimous." New members who have filed applications will be voted in at this next meeting.

Stevens Quartet.

The first meeting of the quartet was held on Thursday, October 4, at which time there were nine candidates for the three vacancies. None of these were Freshmen; surely, out of one hundred and thirty men there must be some who can sing.

October 3, the 'Varsity football team opened what s to be a most successful season. T h e game was played eton, and altho the team met defeat by a score of 22 to 0, a very creditable showing was made. The game was characterized thruout by open playing, making- it very interesting from a spectator's point of view.

Roberts started the game by kicking off to Princeton, at 3:10. After one or two line plays, a forward pass was tried, but it resulted in a fumble, and Tyson fell on the ball. As Stevens was unable to make the required distance, the ball was kicked to Princeton, but the opponents in turn were forced to punt. Prince-

The first home game of the season was played on October 6, Rutgers being the opponents. Altho hotly

was soon lost because of an off-side play, and the 'Varsity was forced to give up the ball. The New Brunswick men next forced their way down the field and tried a place kick. They did sot succeed, however, and were later penalized for holding and forced to punt. Stevens tried the Rutgers line but failed and in turn were forced to punt. The men from New Brunswick lost soon after on downs. Roberts then punted to Rutgers, but Stevens soon recovered it on downs. Cowenhoven was put thru for five yards, and Thayer made first down. Next a forward pass was tried, on which Rutgers obtained the ball, losing it again on downs. I t was soon recovered again, and a still further gain made by an off-side play by Stevens. It was only to be lost again on downs and then recovered on a punt from Roberts. Rutgers was then penalized for an off-side play and still further for holding. Roberts got the ball on a punt and advanced it about ten yards. The half ended with the score 0 to 0.

Rutgers made a touchback on the kick-off, and Stevens punted out, Thayer getting the ball. Stevens was soon forced to punt, and Rutgers returned it, but quickly recovered tge ball

The time has come to think about the ink" again. Although the "Link" is published under the name of the Junior Class, this does not mean that this class must write all the articles or furnish all the illustrations. The editors will be glad to receive anything in the form of stories, drawings, etc.

To publish such a book requires a large sum of money, and the only sources of income are subscriptions and advertisements.

Last year about 90 per cent. of the men in the Institute subscribed. Why can't we do better than that this year ? The advertising rates are : $40 per page, $22 per half page, $11.50 per quarter page, and $6.00 per eighth page. As an inducement for men to secure advertisements, the Board offers 10 per cent. of the value of the advertisement.

Basketball.

At a meeting of the basketball team on Wednesday, Oct. 3, Steinmetz '08 was elected captain and Van Buren '08, manager of this year's team to fill the vacancies caused by the resignations of Grubb '07 and Demarest '07 from these positions.

Practice will commence about Nov. 1, and it is probable that the Hoboken Academy will be secured for the preliminary work.

Bowling.

Stevens has received an invitation from the Intercollegiate Bowling League, thru Mr. Kirkpatrick, of Lafayette, the presi- 1 dent, to enter a team in this winter's competition. The colleges which made up the circuit last year were: University of Pennsyl- 1 vania, Haverford, Lafayette and Columbia. Besides Stevens, Swarthmore, Lehigh, and New York University have been asked 4 to join the Association.

T H E STUTE The total expenses for the season, including the rental of home alleys and travelling costs, amount to about $75. In other colleges, the greater part of this is raised by subscription, the members of the team contributing the remainder.

Bowling has been quite a popular winter sport with many students of the Institute, and last year several interesting matches were rolled between teams from the Junior and Senior Classes ; but it would hardly seem that Stevens is prepared to go into the pastime as heavily as this proposition calls for.

Tennis.

The doubles tournament starter on Thursday with fifteen entries.

Manager Carpenter has written to several colleges asking for games, but to date has received nb replies.

A word to the wise is sufficient;" and yet to the Freshmen these words mean nothing. This may help them to find a meaning.

The "&ink" is the year book of Stevens. The ink of 1906" is the book published last year by the class of 1907. What ' does this book contain ? I t contains the histories, yells, and lists of members of the four classes. Surely, a good way to get acquainted with the upper classmen. I t contains a peep at the Faculty behind the scenes, showing them as they really are, and . giving their true (?) names. Did we say a peep ? Yes, two, even three peeps. Certainly this will help you to know your professors. Then, too, this book tells about the fraternities and clubs, the athletic teams and records, and, in fact, everything which a Freshman ought to know.

And why are we telling you this? Because, lucky Freshmen, there are a few copies of the "I,ink of 1906' ' left over, and some of you will have a chance to get one; that is, if you hurry. The price of this book is one dollar, and it is worth it.

Buy one. You will not regret it. But be quick. There are less, than fifty left and since your class numbers one hundred and forty, they will not go around.

In connection with this, however, there is one important point not to be overlooked, and that is that the undergraduates have no right to expect alumni support unless they themselves, to a man, take active and enthusiastic interest in the games.

Meyer; Junior-Fan- and Steinmetz; Sophomore-Force, Hoexter and Terwilliger; FreshmanĂ&#x192;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Cun ningham, Hill, B. V. Pfeiffer and Van Cise. These men are authorized to solicit subscriptions and receive payment for same and they will also assist in the distribution of the paper.

Faculty and Institute Notes.

The enrollment of the Freshman Class this year is 139, a against 142 last year.

The Cameron Steam Pump Co. has donated a pump to the Department of Experimental Engineering.

Professor Pryor has been making a comparative test of grates at the General Electric Company's works at Harrison, N. J. A successor to Mr. J. N. Vedder, last year Instructor in Mathematics to the Freshman Class, has not yet been appointed. Meanwhile, Prof. Gunther is filling the position.

Professor Stillman has been commissioned by a large acetylene producing company to determine in a practical manner whether the gas is at all dangerous for lighting purposes.

President Humphreys will deliver an address at the dedication of a new building for the Engineering Department at the University of Pennsylvania, on October 19.

Upon the recommendation of Prof. Ganz, a number of Seniors have made application for student membership in the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.

On Monday, former Prof. D. S. Jacobus was scheduled to give the first of a series of lectures to the Senior Class, which are to deal with practical engineering subjects.

cal Society last month. He has also been advanced recently to associate membership in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Prof. Federico Giolitti, of the University of Rome, and Sig. Emilio Eles, Italian Counsel in New York City, were recent visitors to the Institute. They took especial interest in the Department of Chemistry.

The Pratt and Whitney Co., of Hartford, has presented Professor Furman with a large board on which are mounted samples of the products of the milling machine, forming an interesting exhibit. , A corner in the testing room on the second floor of the Carnegie Laboratory is being partly enclosed and when finished will be the headquarters of Mr. Bischoff,who will have charge of the apparatus used in the various exercises.

Professor Ganz has been invited to address the Stevens Club of Newark at its opening meeting for the season, Friday, October 12th. Professor Ganz will speak on Electrolytic Corrosion," in which subject he has had considerable experience.

The scope of the tests in the Carnegie Laboratory has been further enlarged thru the addition of an ice-making machine, the gift of the Brunswick Refrigeration Co. A large tank, to be used in connection with this exercise, has been donated by the Nonpareil Cork Co.

As an introduction to the practical work of the Interme la e Term, each member of the Junior Class is required to devote one day during the term to both the eneine and the boiler rooms of the Carnegie Laboratory. This, i t is expected, will give each member of the class a general insight into the management and function of these departments.

The description of the Morton Laboratory together, with the account of the Dedication Exercises, as given in the Stevens Institute Indicator" for July, will be published in pamphlet form for distribution. Copies bound in board will be sent to prominent personages thruout the country, while a number in paper binding will be placed in the Laboratory for the coi venience of visitors to the Institute.

An addition has been made to the requirements for admission, to take effect in 1907, in the shape of what is called Group 2, consisting of preliminary subjects, by selecting from which the applicant must secure two points. Prep Notes.

On Wednesday last, in the first game of the season, the team lined up against Passaic High School, at Passaic. What at first promised to be a walk over, developed into a rather severe contest. There was no scoring in the first half; and, in the interval, Coach Saunders gave the men a little heart to heart talk. As a result, the team worked hard and fast in the second half and earned a touchdown. Leonhard put the ball in the right spot, making the score 6-0.

Time was called shortly after.

On Monday afternoon, the regular fall Athletic Association meeting was held in the Carnegie laboratory. T h e following officers were elected: President, Dr. F. S. Sevenoak; Vice-President, W. A. Boyd; Treasurer, Prof. C. S. Stone; Secretary, H. Payne. Leonhard '07 was made temporary captain of the football team. Boyd '07 was elected manager and Horr '08, assistant manager.
