KHODA: Too Many Chiefs Yet Still No Leadership

Few of the student body are informed about what Khoda i s supposed todo or even about what Khoda has done for the student body duril)g the past year. Khoda haso ften been referred toas that secret senior honor society ." Th is need f or secrecy isa myth perpetuated by members of Khoda themselves and is nowhere stated in their consti tut ion

THE STUTE approached Maureen Bu rke, president of Khoda , and asked whether Khoda would be willing to submit an article which would point out some of the t hings whi ch the organ ization had done this year This suggest ion was rejected When asked to identify the newly initiated members for the Khoda class of 1979 , Maureen Burke indicated that th is would not be possible since some of them did not wish tobe identified at the time This is completely contrary to Kohoda' motto which , as stated in their constituion is " leadershi p." How can any organization practice leadership if the " leaders" are unknown Just asa business cannot function under absentee ownership , neither can Khoda Therefore, THE STUTE feels that the preserit members and newly elected members should be named

Those who led Khoda this year are : Maureen Burke, Ed Mansky , Ron Hosie , Jim Weatherall , Caron Kogan , Anne Nevola and Mike Antieri. The Khoda class of 1979 consists of Mary Lemanowic z, Tom Pallilonis , Mi ke M organ , Skip Farrell , Lou Biondo , Dean Constantine , John D earborn , and John Mulani.

The present internal strength of Khoda is weak Ed Mansky resigned from the organization because of conflicts with other members The reason why he was elected into Khoda (or why anyone is elected into Khoda) isso that he could offer his own opinion and views even if they ran contrary to those of other members. Yet his own opin ion and views ev en if they ran cont rary to those of other members Yet this w as not acceptab le to some of Khodaand Ed Mansky fe lt itwou ld be best for h im to resign Later he was asked to consider his res ignation , but he chose to stay w ith his initial d e cision

The bac kground and qualifications ofne xty ear'sK h oda class requires some e xamination. Initia lly only s ix m embers were elected Of these si x, fiveareall from the same fraternity Which fraternity they are from i s ins ignific ant. The point is that these people are not representativ e of t he different groups on campus The o ther two m ember s were elected only later to bring some semblan ceo f balan ce tothe newl y elected group

Du ring th e ele ct ions for new member s , as ituation somewhat simi lar t o Ed Mans ky 's befell RonH osie. Yet this was not acceptable to some of Khoda and Ed Mansky felt itwould be best for him to resign. Later he was asked to consider his resignation, but he chose tostay with his initial decision

The background and qualifications ofne xt year' s Khoda class requires some examination. Initially only si x members were elected Of these six, five areall from the sam e fraternity Which fraternity they are from is insignificant. The point is that these people are not representativ e ofth e different groups on campus The other two members were elected only later tobr ing some semblance ofbal ance toth e newl y elected group

A professional institution without on-site professional practice cannot givetoits students a first-rate professional education Forthesereasons, we place a high valueon taculty members who practice their professional specialties anddo this as much as possible on our own campus. Hence our emphasis on research.

Research is expensive and cannot and should notbesupported through student tuition. Therefore , wemust encourage andhelp faculty members to seek external support for their research. Stevensisnot supported byresearchbut, asmuch as possible, wemusttrytoget outside supportfor our faculty's research.

External recognition of Stevens faculty inthe speciality areasof engineering and science: energy and - power engineering, computer science , plastics engineering, etc., comes about through taculty research and professional practiceandismost important in establishing the recognized high qualit y of Stevens' unspecialized undergraduate program. Our program, taught bya faculty of established expertise, js accepted where the same program offered by 'a faculty ofno recognized special expertise would notbeas highly regarded.

IfStevensceasedtodo research andour tacutty ultimately became only agents to facilitate the transfer of knowledge contained in textbooks to students, we would ceasetobea professional school and would become merely a four-year extension of high school. AStevens degree would thenb.e ofmuchless significance and value.

Allofthis notwithstanding, a faculty of experts who cannot

teach orwhohaveno interest in teaching andthe development of young minds serves only itself Students haveevery right to expect that their professors are interested in teaching them andthat they constantly strive tomakethe hours spentinthe classroom and laboratory valuable learning experiences While faculty research is obviously necessary , itisbyno means sufficient. Education is our principal objective and professors whohavenopersonal commitment to teaching haveno place atStevens.

Our objective istohave1.The Stevens ' educational programs and their internal execution carried outby our faculty with competence and effecti veness and2.the outside world which employs Stevens graduates or accepts them for further professional training , view Stevensasan institution witha faculty of distinguished experts whoset high standards forthe curriculum and vigilantly guard the high quality ofthe Stevens degree Ifweare successful in attaining both these objectives, not only: will Stevens students educational experience beintrinsically valuable buta Stevens degree will continue to be regarded asamarkof high achievement that provides above-average access to employment opportunities orto further first-rate professional study.

Asis evident from thepast examples , dirty politics are defin itely go ing onin Khoda. Such conduct is i mmature, inexcusable and should no t be tolerated bythe student body.

Letsalso look more closely into what Khoda hasdon e this year Cons ider ing thesizeof their StuCo allotment (1400) quite abitof leadersh ip should have resulted What was this money usedfor? What benefits hasthe student body received? Khoda played alargerolein getting Boken '78off t he ground Th is maybea commendable thing todo , but itis really t he job o f STUCO Concerning Dr Efe 's pres ent situation , Khoda is supposed tobe " approachingtheissue ." The only thing that Khoda has openly tak en credit fo r this yearis t he formation ofthe security committee Yet , uptill now, nothing of significance has resulted from this committee either.

The reluctance of Khoda to report onits activities isdueto thefactthat nothing of importance has happened. It has degenerated into another ineffective, honorary society whose members are infatuated with their self importance yet produce no results This need not beso Letus hope that the Khoda classof1979 understands the importance of their position anddoes uphold the motto of leadership inthe future.
